  • Aspiring actress betrayed by mentor

    Aspiring actress betrayed by mentor

THIS is the case of a male Nigerian artiste was asked to help mentor a young aspiring actress, but who ended up having forceful sexual intercourse with her. This is the victim’s story as narrated to the reporter. “I studied Theatre Arts. After I completed my university education, my aunt introduced me to a set of identical twins. They are both men and run an NGO which brings twins, triples and such sets of children from all over the world to attend their annual event in Nigeria. Because of that, these twins are well networked. So, they promised to get me connected to one or two actors. Before long, I was taken to meet this particular artiste. You know, the excitement of meeting someone you’ve always seen on TV was so overwhelming. Anyway, to shorten the lengthy story I met him. He introduced me to others. He took me along to about three auditios; though, I did not take part in any, but I was thrilled nonetheless.

“However, I was always with him as his protégé most of the times except on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He introduced me to people as his ‘kid sister’ who wants to become like him. It was all fun. At the end of each meeting, I returned to my parents’ home in Abesan, Ipaja, Lagos. A few times, my dad had called to thank him for his efforts on my life. So, I never had any reason to be afraid of being with him.

“Then, one Friday, we were in his home office, and he said, we had nowhere to go but that he will give me some materials to study. His wife had gone out. Some guests came around and left. It’s not that we were all totally alone. In fact, that will not be the first time I would be with him in such a setting.

“At some point, he called to ask what I was doing; I told him I was reading the book he asked me to. He then said I should go back to the table. Few minutes later, he called me back and started telling that I was a very pretty and irresistible girl. I was flush with shyness. And before I could talk he started touching and caressing me. I tried to pull back as I asked him “But uncle, why are you doing this?”

“He just dragged me close to himself, pulled me closer and forced his lips on me. I tried to push him back, but he was too strong for me. He held me so tight I was in tears within a few minutes. The only person that could help me was the gateman downstairs. But I didn’t know if he could hear me.

“Everything lasted less than ten minutes or so. I was in tears. I felt as if the whole world had crashed in on me. As I got downstairs looking ruffled, it was as if the gateman guessed what had transpired from the way he stared at me. On getting home, I told my parents, who told the twins, and then, we were brought to you (the reporter).”

  • Violated in a youth camp

    Violated in a youth camp

NOTHING you say would assuage her anguish. Her tears flowed like endless rivers of water. She turned her back on everyone in her parents’ living room. A few of the well-wishers were privy to what had befallen her. Few others were lost, trying to ask those sitting close to them, what exactly had happened to the young girl, who had gone missing for over forty-eight hours, but now sat, backing everyone, with her head covered in a black pashmina.

She is Juliana (not real name), 18years of age – prospective student of a federal university currently awaiting her resumption date. As her mother got up from her seat to attend to certain matters, Juliana’s quiet voice cut into the silence in the living room. “None of you could ever know how dehumanising being raped is.” All mouths were agape in shock as people looked from the right to the left to be sure they grasped the words just uttered by the young girl.

Swiftly, her mom, Mrs. Brown immediately snapped: “Please, keep your mouth shut and don’t ridicule this family for God’s sake!” The awkward exchange was followed by a long bout of silence.

As brows remained furrowed and well-wishers sought clarity, Brown pleaded with guests to excuse the family. Everyone left except the reporter, who incidentally had been a family friend of many years. Thereafter, a closed session ensued. Juliana, the reporter gently pleaded ‘tell us what really happened.’

Her words: “I had never wanted to sleep with a man till my wedding night. My father, in particular, has been a strong supporter in this wise. He talks to me all the time and so, does my mother. Because I had gained admission and was looking forward to my resumption day, I was invited to a youth camp; my parents believed there was no need to deny me permission. After all, I had behaved impressively through my years in high school. My daddy was especially proud of me. By the time I got my WASCE results, my dad bought me a gift because I did very well. I also did quite well in my post-UME. And I got admitted on the merit list. I will conceal the name of the group that invited me to the camp and the location we went to as I have been told.

“One day at the camp, we were all to go for a particular activity. But because I had not been feeling well, I got excused to stay back and rest. About an hour after everyone had left, I thought I was all alone in the female wing of the camp, so, I had only my briefs on. Suddenly, I felt the instinct to look back. As I did, I gasped in shock as I saw one of the male campers standing by the door staring at me. I knew I had seen him since we got to the camp. But I never met or knew him before then. And we never related.

“Then, he started walking close to me. I quickly grabbed my towel but before I could wrap it on me, he jerked it away from me and pushed me to the bed. I made to scream, but he tucked my towel into my mouth, reminding me that the rest of the group were far away from us. Before I could get my brains together, he had started raping me. I struggled hard but he was just smiling at me as he did the evil act. When he was done, he warned me that if I report him, he would deal with me.

“I was in tears and terrified. I was shaking for hours till others came in later. It didn’t take long before some of the girls knew what had happened. I didn’t even tell any story, but was just crying. Then, one of them ran to call our supervisor, a lady. I was encouraged to clean up. Some girls assisted me.

“Later, I was asked for his name. I told them I don’t know him. In about an hour, they brought out and lined up the other males in the camp and told me to identify him. I felt terrible. But he was nowhere among the lot. I felt he must have run away. We all came from different places. Only a few of us knew one another. I was then taken to the hospital and was admitted for two days.

“Later, my parents were invited and told what had happened. They were crushed. I wept as I saw my mother wail. My father was shattered. That is why he has been indoors since he was told. All I pray is that God will not give that boy rest till he has repented of his evil to me, and who knows if he has other girls to his list of conquests?”

  • Gifts to give this season

    Gifts to give this season

APART from being a time to enjoy the bliss of the yuletide, the Christmas season also provides an ample opportunity to appreciate people who are not only dear to us, but have also contributed to our progress during the year. Thus, Christmas is a season to give and reach out. The Greek playwright, Euripides wrote that gifts persuade even the gods, so do not rule out the effect of exchanging gifts and presents with family, friends and colleagues at this jolly holiday period.

To ensure that the gift fits the purpose that it is designed for, discretionary measures should be taken to safeguard that your gift does not communicate something else since the manner of giving could be worth more than the gift itself.

The nature of the gift you present to some people also matters too. Imagine a young female worker presenting a pair of briefs and boxers to an older male boss. That sure would be an awkward offering. To save you the agony of having your gifts misinterpreted, here is a list of items fitting the personality of the receiver.

    Corporate gifts

Gifts are given within and outside corporate organization in order to appreciate collaboration and business partnerships. It could be within, as management presents gifts to staffs and as well be an exchange from one corporation to another. Corporate gifts could be hampers containing household items, customized cards, branded t-shirts and stationary as well as souvenirs. Perishable items given out at this season include rice, groundnut oils, noodles, canned foods and assorted drinks.

    Lovers’ gifts

It is not valentine so cakes, candies and bouquet should not top the list of your gifts option. Consider exchanging items such as perfumes, jewelries, wrist watches, clothing, hand-made cards with love filled messages between you both. Also put into consideration each other’s favourite things and allergies. Other gifts to consider include between lovers include tickets to exotic holiday spots, dinner or launch for two, concerts and shows.

    Teenagers

Teenagers are impressionable set of people so ensure that your choice of a gift for them is in tune with the times. If you want to present clothing, ensure they are trendy, chic and colourful. This rule also applies to foot wears, ensure that they are fashionable and cool. A pair of fashionable slippers, nice earring or box-bag would catch the fancy of a female teenager. For the boys, consider getting items such as video games; knap sacks, jean trousers, shirts, caps and trainers.

    Co-workers and colleagues

An average worker spends nothing less than six hours a day at work so you definitely will not be over burdening yourself if you include your fellow workers as part those deserving of your gesture. Your boss, mentors and even junior workers should be included in your list too. You would not need a fat budget to do this as these options should ordinarily not tear your pocket. Gifts to give, consider cards, assorted drinks such as wines or juice. You can also package small hampers and souvenirs as well.

    The less privileged

If you understand the concept of Christmas well, then you will know that spreading your tentacle of gifts list to the less privileged is an option that should not be sacrificed on the altar of pleasure. Think of the concept of Individual Social Responsibility (ISR), there is no better time than this season. A visit to an orphanage, prison yards, old peoples home, Cheshire homes, rehab centres and other places housing people of special needs is an optimal means of giving and sharing love at Christmas. Items such as diapers, children clothing, beverages, toys, mosquito nets, stationary, food items, edibles, toiletries, cash and a host of other needful would go a long way in not just putting a smile on their faces but also fulfilling a necessary obligation.

    Parents and children

Parents deserve presents too even if they don’t ask. In appreciation of their love and guidance over the years, Christmas should be one of the periods to make them feel special. Present them with arrays of traditional attires that you have noticed they like to adorn. If you have parents who are still active on the social scene, then think of wrist watches, shoes and perfumes as well. You can also package hampers containing provisions needful for old people such as beverages, dietary food items, fruits and cash. For children, cloth and shoes are items that you can’t negotiate. To this you can add toys, games, colourings, fun-box containing play items as well as edibles.

  • Wow with dreadlocks

    Wow with dreadlocks

DREADLOCKS, also known as locks, dreads or jata, are hairs that are matted into coils. Dreadlocks are most often affiliated with the Rastafari movement, but more and more people are wearing dreadlocks. Dreadlocks styles include a dreadlock ponytail, dreadlock drape, and even a deadlock up do. The best style for dreadlocks depends on the length of the dreads. Colourful beads put in the locks is one way to dress dreads up and make them different as in tying the dreads back with a colourful ribbon. Dreadlocks may be a term some of you are not too familiar with. It is quite a popular hairstyle and we are surely aware of this ancient hairstyle as we have seen it on so many celebrities. These are called ‘jata’ in Hindi. The trend of creating dreadlocks on the hair is quite in vogue now and many have even tried this hairstyle. There are many misconceptions about this hairstyle. Many believe that those with dreadlocks refrain from washing their hair. The fact remains that many dreadlocks techniques require the person to brush and shampoo the hair in order to create the dreadlocks.

There are two usual ways of creating dreadlocks. The ancient method is to refrain from brushing and letting the hair grow out and get interlocked in the process to create varying textures, sizes and lengths of dreadlocks. The method is also known as the ‘Neglect’ method. The modern method, however, is used by salons to create artificial dreadlocks on the hair. The salons use special type of beeswax to create the dreadlocks. The use of a special type of wax helps in the removal of it completely using hot water. When the new dreads reach the locking stage, the wax is removed. The benefit is that the customer may get any shape and size dreadlocks as they please.

  • Rock and Rave set for cable TV

A TV Fashion Show aimed to debut on Cable TV would feature a collection of five prominent fashion designers, five upcoming designers, jewellery and bag designers, music, cheographed dance, and other side attractions today at the BESPOKE CENTRE, Lekki, Lagos.

According to Clara Chinwe Okoro, the Executive Producer/COO Brandworld Media, owners of the Rock and Rave Fashion franchise, is organising Fashion TV launch edition tagged “Rock n rave”, today, 1st of December, 2013. “The concept for us was to start an African Fashion TV, where the business of fashion in Africa would be covered in full details. We also realised that we could as well start a Fashion Channel to cover African fashion activities on Cable TV.”

She adds: “Our major partner for the event is FADAN, The Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria.”

In attendance will be important personalities spanning the corporate world, entertainment, business, music, sports, media and movie industries. It will also be parading the cream of the Nigerian celebrity circle.

Okoro says that “What pointed us in this direction was the study conducted by the British Council which asserted that Nigeria stands on the threshold of what could be the greatest transformation in its history with population growth slowing, and its ‘baby boom’ generation entering the workforce. By 2030, it will be one of the few countries in the world with young workers in plentiful supply.”

Okoro goes on to highlight the benefits that can be tapped from the process. “If the country continues with the recent economic growth, improved education and health standards, and creates jobs, the average Nigerian could be three times richer by 2030 and over 30 million people will be lifted out of poverty.”

She also warns that the risks are as great as the opportunities available. “The number of young people frustrated by a lack of jobs and opportunities is on the increase. Nigeria needs to create 25 million jobs over the next 10 years and move its focus away from oil, which contributes 40% to national GDP, but only employs 0.15% of the population.”

Veronica. O. Chimah, CEO cevoma Bespoke Brand, will be speaking on ”The Designer as Brand” alongside Mrs Funmi Ajila-Ladipo who will x-ray the potentials in the fashion sector as an alternative to oil.

Ten prominent Nigerians will receive the Revolution Award which seeks to recognise the African individuals who have contributed to the growth of the sector via their ideas and talent. In the pack, you find seasoned designer of Mudi the Fashion Brand and Mrs Flora Nwazojie of Clear Essence and others.
