  • Mercy and grace cease at death

Beloved, the Almighty God has appointed unto men a time, both for coming into the physical world, and going out of it. No one lives here forever. No matter the number of years we stayed in the world, it is appointed unto man to die. And according to the order of time as arranged by the Creator, after death comes the judgment of God when all will give account of his/her actions.

The judgment of God is for every individual after which follows the final, eternal, and unalterable condition of man, which will be either in a state of misery, or felicity. At that time every knee shall bow at the court of Jesus Christ who will judge the whole world. It does not matter whether you are a king, President or governor, neither does it matter how strong you are physically, intellectually, or the language you speak or understand, or whether you are fabulously rich or wretchedly bankrupt, one thing is very certain, you must be judged by Christ.

Heb. 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”

Man is to die and be judged once. And once any person misses his or her opportunity to be saved by the mercy and grace of God through our Lord Jesus Christ while alive, such person will be condemned during judgment. If there is anything that is to be done once in an eternity of existence, it is preparation for the world beyond. If preparation is to be made for it, we should make all which we expect ever to make. A man who is to leave his home and never to return, should make the right preparation, because he cannot come back to take anything, which he has forgotten, or arrange that which he has neglected, or give counsel which he has failed to give while at home, or ask forgiveness for offences for which he has neglected to seek pardon.

And so it is of death, a man who dies- dies but once. He cannot come back again to make preparation, or repair the evils which he has done or to implore pardon for sins for which he had failed to ask for forgiveness. Whatever is to be done by him with reference to death, is to be done once and for all, before he dies.

There is nothing like one to obtain mercy after death or receive grace to live a holy life after death. After death the door of mercy will be closed and there is nothing like praying for somebody to receive grace or mercy. If the person died without repentance, without obtaining the mercy of God while alive, the person will have the door of mercy shut forever against him. There is no repentance after death in the grave, what awaits you after death is judgment of which if you are a sinner, you will receive the pronouncement – ‘depart from me, ye that worketh iniquity, I never knew you’ and that marches you to hell fire. Your argument that you were a pastor, bishop, overseer or a governor, president and minister will not be acceptable, and there is nothing like pleading for mercy as those things would have been done and obtained when you are still alive.

But if the person has taken advantage of grace and the mercy and repent and live the rest of his life in righteousness by the grace of God that person will hear ‘welcome to the mansion prepared for you’.

Beloved, if one refuses to accept Jesus Christ while alive, that person is already condemned. And if he dies in such condition that person can never enter into the kingdom of God. No amount of pleading for mercy that will change the person’s salvation because the door of mercy and grace would have been closed and shut for the person from eternity to eternity.

Beloved, I implore you with all humility to give your life to Jesus Christ now so that grace and mercy shall be granted to you, because tomorrow may be too late and the grace and mercy of God may be ceased.

  • Contribute to nation building, cleric urges Nigerians

Nigerians have been asked to contribute their quota to take the nation to greater heights.

The General Secretary, Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN), Dare Ajiboye, gave the advice at a briefing in Lagos.

Ajiboye said the problem with Nigeria is attributable to the absence of good and dedicated leaders.

Leaders, he added, should have the fear of God and love for mankind.

According to him: “Our leaders are selfish. They amass wealth that they keep in and outside the country.”

He also asked the citizens to do what is right. “We have no other place to call our home; therefore, we all need to make Nigeria better,” he said.

On the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU), Ajiboye appealed to both the union and the federal government to continue to dialogue and shift grounds where necessary in the interest of the students.

He said it was not good for the government to ask ASUU to reason with it when it was not raising the stakes.

He criticised the committee set up by the government on the national conference, saying it is a delay tactic.

The BSN helmsman advised the government to implement its recommendations to restore the people’s confidence.

  • ‘Marital bliss is possible with knowledge’

‘Marital bliss is possible with knowledge’

The Senior Pastor of Everwinning Faith Ministries International Lagos, Rev. Solomon Ojigiri, spoke with Sunday Oguntola on marital issues ahead of the forthcoming seminar in the church. Excerpts:

How do you react to the recent signing of the Lagos Domestic law?

I think it’s a good development because there is so much abuse in this part of the world. You know the people abroad are enlightened. A lot of married people are cautious about the way they treat their spouse, especially the women folk, because they know that the law is in their favour.

But in Nigeria, we have had a lot of cases on assault. I mean people being wounded. In fact, recently there was a woman who said a lot of women are being killed and nobody is doing anything about it. I think it’s a good development if such laws can be enforced because sometimes the people just make laws on paper.

It will also help men to be conscious. You know people do things because they think they can do away with it but when you are aware of the presence of a law against what you want to do then you are more careful.

People say that will encourage lots of women without good intention to make troubles…

Anything that has advantages also has disadvantages. Of course, certainly, they have disadvantages but I think we should look at the intention of the law to protect women from abuse. That should be the main concentration.

Of course, we also see some people that will want to take advantage of such but then we can’t say because of that we will pull out the fact that there is a need for such law.

    Is marital bliss possible?

Trust me, it is possible. It is not just realism but a possibility. But, of course, it comes with lots of sacrifices and efforts. Now the most important thing when it comes to the issues of marriage is knowledge. Most of the time people don’t know what to do. That’s what is causing problems in marriages. I usually classify ignorance into five areas.

Firstly, I talk about ignorance of God’s word. People don’t even know what the word of God says on marriage. Many people married and run their marriages on what is said on TV shows and what psychologists say.

God is the author of marriage and I believe He has the final say on marriage. Secondly, there is ignorance of God’s purpose for marriage. Many people get married for wrong reasons. For instance, when you see somebody getting married to just have children, he will probably marry another wife if the first one does not have kids in the first three years.

Sometimes I tell some people ‘you don’t need a wife. You need a cook’ if the only reason you got married is because you need someone that will cook for you. So, ignorance of God’s purpose for marriage leads people to marry for the wrong reasons.

Then, there is ignorance of our responsibilities in marriage because we have responsibility. The fourth is ignorance of gender differences. The women differ from men and a lot of time the men want the women to do things the way they will and the same for women.

So, the more you understand the nature and differences between the women and the men, the better. When I got married, I went out one day for a kind of appointment and my wife said ‘how was it?’ I just said ‘fine. I’m hungry let me have food.’ My wife was not pleased and I later got to know that women ask you questions, they want you to go into details because that’s part of their nature.

So the ignorance of gender difference is also a reason and we need to develop in that area. Last one is ignorance of satanic devices. Many people don’t know that Satan is seriously after marriages. That is because marriage is the foundation for everything. It is the foundation for the family, the foundation for the society and the foundation for the nation. If a nation will become good, it will start from the family.

That is why Satan, in his strategic plans, wants to destroy marriages and when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. You find out when there is a problem in the marriage, it is the offspring that suffer. The children become dysfunctional because the devil has reprogrammed their lives.

So many women struggle with submission. They wonder to what extent should they submit to irresponsible, unbelieving husbands.

I tell people that the word of God doesn’t say that ‘submit to your husband when your husband is responsible.’ There was a time we were discussing that and some women said that if my husband is caring and loving enough, then I will be submissive to him.

And some men said ‘if my wife is submissive enough then I should take care of her.’ That’s what I call responsibilities in marriage and the greatest thing a man wants is respect. That’s why God said to the woman to submit to the man. God said to the man to love the woman because the greatest need of the woman is love and if you don’t pay attention to those responsibilities there will be troubles.

But some men believe that submission means you should harass the woman. I saw a book sometime ago titled “Battered to submission”. God is not expecting us to batter the woman to submission. There have been cases where the man is a drunk and the man is an irresponsible person. If he wants a wife to do something against God, then, of course, you decline.

But if it’s something else, the woman must submit. That is why every woman must be very careful to marry someone they can truly submit to.

Another issue that people struggle with is how far can a man afford to be transparent, considering that women’s needs are endless?

This reminds me of the story of a family. There was a quarrel over money and the man beat the woman until she fainted. They called me to intervene and I understood the problem was the man said he had no money. The wife discovered where he hid the money, took it and used it to cook for the family.

The man came back and all hell was let loose. When I spoke with the man, he said he told her he had no money because she would overwhelm him with needs. I seriously believe that as a man, we have to be open to our spouses. This is what I do through the grace of God. I have been open to my wife. I tell her what my income is and disclose any money I make. But what I do is I let her know what I intend to do with the money.

If I have N100, 000, I tell her I’m sowing N20, 000 while N30 000 is for us. The N20,000 is for the children and we are keeping N20,000 for the family. She can’t come and now make request beyond what we have. The request will be within what we have. So, it’s just a matter of planning and that’s why I believe families should have budgets.

You want to sit down with your wife and plan based on your income and your expenditures. Look at some of the things you make money for. I believe it’s more harmful when you don’t disclose to her. She makes endless requests because she does not know how much you have.

What is your take on joint account?

I believe you can do a joint account. Before we got married, I asked my wife what to do. We have accounts that are joint and the ones that are not joint. We have accounts that we run together and we can withdraw from. But what we do is that even if it’s her account or my account, we have to know what is there.

And we have to know why we are spending it. We don’t just spend unilaterally without notice. So I believe it’s not a bad thing.

What is Night of Marital Bliss all about?

It is an informative, educative and interactive programme. The last edition was in September and we had a talk show. One of the questions is what will you do if you are about entering your apartment or your house and find your wife slapping your mother? So we discussed a lot of practical things. It is meant for widows, widowers, divorcees.

You know many divorcees are being ostracised but we are giving them opportunity to learn. So it’s for everyone that wants to know about relationship and how they can experience bliss in their marriage.

    Emeka Okeke dumps Carat MP

HARDWORKING Emeka Okeke, the chief executive officer of Carat Media Perspectives, has resigned his appointment with the media agency after pioneering and leading the agency for over a decade. We gathered that Okeke dropped his letter of resignation which will take effect on 31 December 2013 but it was a struggle before the board approved it.

Sources say that the media strategist is up to something that would shake the industry. It is believed he is moving to set up his own independent media outfit. Okeke joined Insight Communications in 1995 from Advertising Techniques, rising through the ranks to become the agency’s media director. In 1998, he was seconded by the group to Mediacom Ghana as the pioneering General Manager, doubling as the supervising director for Mediacom’s operations in Togo, Benin and Cote d’Ivoire. Emeka returned to Nigeria in 2002 and was appointed Media Director at Insight, occupying the position until the group appointed him again to pioneer Carat Media Perspectives as managing director.

Emeka led the new agency on a winning streak, clinching several blue chip businesses including Heineken Nigerian Breweries, Friesland WAMCO, Procter & Gamble, Nokia, Vitafoam and MTN.

Sources said the chairman of the group, Biodun Shobanjo, called a meeting to announce Emeka’s resignation and address the agency community on the future of the agency.

  • My affair with Emenike

    My affair with Emenike

Nollywood stunning beauty, Victoria Egbecheru, may have had grandeur ideas of an intimate affair with Super Eagles goal king, Emmanuel Emenike, that would blossom to the altar but The Nation Sport and Style can authoritatively tell you that the relationship was destined to fail from the beginning, writes TAIWO ALIMI.

AT least both parties have declared themselves ‘free agents’ in the marital department.

Though Emenike would not want to be drawn into any controversy concerning his relationship with the Nollywood up and coming actress, he simply disclosed his ‘not in any serious relationship’ status while sharing his idea of an ideal wife-to-be.

Egbecheru on the other hand declared that the affair with Emenike was great while it lasted. So, how long did the affair actually last? The enchanting Micro Biology graduate offered the answer: “I met Emenike through a mutual friend who introduced us and we started as good friends. He was real fun and because of my love for football it was easy for us to get along. Along the way we discovered we had some differences and decided to end it. It was mutual and l have since moved on.”

The gorgeous Nollywood act also refuted allegation of infidelity, explaining that it was a figment of some people’s imagination. “l don’t know what they are talking about and from the quarters that allegation is coming from. If it is from Emenike l would take it serious. It is just the usual talk in showbiz and l don’t take them too serious. Emenike and l are still good friend and that is all that matters to me.”

A credible source, that is very close to the Super Eagles lynch pin, also volunteered information about the relationship between Emenike and Victoria which he described as a figment of someone’s imagination.

He said: “l cannot recall when Emenike met and asked Victoria to go out with him. True, he may have met her like many fans of the Super Eagles at a social engagement and may have taken pictures together because he has done that with many fans but that does not translate to asking her out or asking her to be his wife. That never happened, and if she is all over the social media posting pictures of her and Emenike, it does not point to any serious affair.”

Below are excerpts of separate interviews with the duo. It is interesting and revealing.

    EMENIKE

‘I am a free agent now’

    Free agent

Before you think about going into marriage, I think there must be a cordial relationship with a girl, abi? I am not thinking about that for now because I am just not ready. Maybe when the likes of Mikel Obi, Chinedu Obasi, Obinna Nsofor and more players in the Super Eagles get married and I attend their weddings, then I can start planning my own, but for now, it is not in my plan.

In the area of relationship, which l also think should come first before marriage, I need to make myself clear: I am still single and searching. I can say l am searching for the lucky girl who would be ready to tolerate me. Marriage is an everlasting match and I don’t want to rush into it. My mother and father are still together despite their old ages; and they have been living for years and that tells you the kind of woman I want. My mother is the only wife my father has and they are like friends and are living like a sister and brother till now. I want a woman like my mother and would be happier if she is even more tolerant than my mother. So when I am ready, I will search for the right person.

I am a kind person that always like to see people around me; I am very friendly. That you see girls around me does not mean I’m in any relationship. As a matter of fact, I don’t have any relationship. I only have cordial friendships but marriage is not yet on the card because I’m still on the fast lane (laughter). I am still a bachelor, so I am free but once I’m married, all gates are closed.

    Dream wife

I have said it before that I want a woman like my mother. My mother is very contented with my father; she’s very loyal and accommodating. She loves making people happy. For a marriage to be successful in this life, I think 90 percent of the efforts must come from the woman. If I see a woman like that for now, I will go straight to the altar but most girls today are after what you have. Money is vanity; though it makes marriage blossom, it does not build a happy home. The truth is that out of 100, it is only 10 that know the definition of a happy marriage and I don’t want a situation whereby I will regret what I have done. I am really taking my time to think about it well. As for those linking me with some actresses in Nigeria, l want to say that they are only rumours. I am not in any relationship with any of them.

    Foreign girl

I will marry a Nigerian that would relate with my parents and family in the easiest way. There are beautiful girls in Nigeria but marriage is not about beauty. You may decide to take fine girls to club but the biggest mistake is to be looking for a beautiful woman to marry

. It is her beauty that will cut your life short. Look at the likes of Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Jay Jay Okocha, they made money in Europe and returned home to marry; I think that makes sense, but I am not against marrying foreigners because at times, they are even better than our girls in some aspects. I like Nigerian girls and I will eventually marry one.

    VICTORIA

‘It was fun while it lasted’

    Affair with Emenike

I met Emenike through a mutual friend who introduced us and we started as good friends. He was real fun and because of my love for football it was easy for us to get along. Along the way we discovered we had some differences and decided to end it. It was mutual and l have since moved on.

    Allegation of infidelity

l don’t know what they are talking about and from the quarters that allegation is coming from. If it is from Emenike l would take it serious. It is just the usual talk in showbiz and l don’t take them too serious. Emenike and l are still good friends, and that is all that matters to me.

    Dumping Microbiology for Nollywood

I found out later in life that microbiology was not what I wanted out of life. I found out late that it was not what I thought it was initially. So, I guess I lost interest. Besides that, I have always loved entertainment. Acting is something I have always loved to do and most of my friends were always encouraging me to go into acting because I have what it takes.

    Movies featured in

Some of the movies I have acted in are out in the market while some are not. I acted in Heroes and Zeros, I was also in Perfect Love although that is a soap opera and it is not yet out in the market. Currently, I am on location and we are shooting a movie called Eight and I also recently concluded work on another movie called May. So, you see I have been really very busy working.

    Style

When it comes to fashion I like to be myself. I do not like to follow a particular trend, I like to wear what fits me, I like to wear a makeup that fits me and you will not find me wearing something because some other person is wearing it or because it is good on somebody else. I like to combine what I wear. I like combining what is in vogue and what is not in vogue, so that at the end of the day I can get a balance. I love fashion.

  • I don’t have a bicycle to my name

I don’t have a bicycle to my name

The name Baba Otu Mohammed would ring a bell to any soccer follower in Nigeria, is it the old generation or the new? Baba Otu, as he is fondly called by numerous fans, was an integral part of the Green Eagles team that reigned supreme on the continent between the late 70s and 80s.

An outside right player with flair and speed, Baba Otu formed a strong bond with the late midfield maestro, Alhaji Mudasiru Lawal, on the field to punish opponents they confronted. Their days saw the rise of Nigerian football, which culminated in the first Africa Nations Cup victory and ECOWAS Cup.

The aged former international was cornered in the northern state of Kaduna by The Nation’s Sport and Style reporter recently, and the over one-hour interview was interesting and revealing. Baba Otu went down memory lane, revealing, like no other, his connection with the late Muda Lawal, what made the then Eagles tick, the role of Chairman Christian Chukwu, then captain of the team, and the intimate financial status of players.

Sadly, and though the soccer living legend is living in penury, he says in another world he would like to come back as a footballer.

Hear him: “Let’s forget what has happened in the past. In football you don’t look back. We always look forward. What has happened before, whether good or bad, is now history. Right now you won’t believe it, I don’t have a club and I am not fighting to get a club or to get the monetary aspect of it. I just want them to put everything in the right direction so that whenever we leave the stage people will remember us that these are the heroes that fought for the game and lifted it to higher pedestal. Good name, they say, is better than riches. Let me tell you another secret: you won’t believe that I don’t have a bicycle to call my own. It is not my priority but wherever there is football you will see me there.” Below are excerpts of the interview. It is refreshingly revealing.

    Nigerian football

Well, it has been up and down as regards football. All the administrations of football we have had in the past have witnessed ups and downs and we just need to continue to work very hard to be able to lift football in the country at all times. Sometimes it would go up and sometimes it would come down. It is at the moment on the rise and so we need to continue to do that thing that we are doing right now.

    Super Eagles

Let me tell you one fact, it is not a matter of foreign professional players or local players making the Super Eagles team, it is a matter of a dedicated, devoted and talented bunch that is ready to do the work. During our playing days we didn’t have any professional players playing for the Eagles and we achieved good results then. So if it is the professional players that are in super form, doing well in their various leagues in Europe and elsewhere in the world, the coach in charge of the senior national team should go for them. Also, if it is from the home front that we have players with football talents and are doing impressively in the Nigerian Premier League and other leagues in the land, let the coach go for them. The best players should be paraded in the Eagles and the best players should be allowed to be in the national team. When you say home-based players, are they not professionals too?

    Green Eagles

We should not talk about the monetary incentives as regards our playing days because we received only N2 (two naira) a day as our daily allowance. But we were even happier that we made the team and wore the national team jerseys then. Everybody at time struggled to put on that green and white jersey of the Eagles and to represent the nation. We were not talking about money at that time because at the end of a continental match we only received a hundred naira (N100) as match bonus. But we were committed and happy that out of 120 million Nigerians then we were counted among the best players to represent the country. We need that commitment in the new generation of the players in the Super Eagles because that is the only way we can take our football to a greater height. It must be spelt out to the players both local and foreign-based what it means to wear that national team jersey. It is everybody’s duty; be you a coach, football administrator, player and even journalist to make it a point of duty to make the players realise this fact.

    Christian Chukwu

Our captain then was Christian Chukwu and he played the role of an assistant coach in the team then. He was a good leader on and off the field of play during our time. Before any match he would call us and discuss how we should play according to the instructions of our coach. He often discussed with us why we should win our match because the over 120 million Nigerians were expecting nothing but victory in our matches. Also, after the match we would sit down together to discuss the mistakes we made in the match and the positive aspects of the match. If the result was not good you won’t see anybody happy or not showing remorse. Everybody would stay indoors in our hotel to reflect the mood unlike nowadays when the Eagles will not play well or get the desired results and you will still see them loitering about in their hotel and not showing any sober mood or reflection. This has to stop and I believe the NFF and the coach are capable of handling this issue well.

    Memory lane

My main guy then that I loved playing with on and off the field of play was the late Mudasiru Lawal. I was playing from the outside right while Muda played from the right side of the midfield then and we enjoyed our partnership in all the matches we played together. Our coaches then could attest to this fact. I miss him a lot.

    Children and football

Yes, my last born, Abdulraheem, is highly gifted and can do anything with football. He is a better player than me if I should compare him with me when I was playing at his age. I think he is going to make it in the game and I am really encouraging him in all ramifications.

    Car freak

Where was the money to buy cars then? The first club to give motorcycles to their players was my team, Mighty Jets of Jos. The first player to own or drive a Mercedes Benz was the late Layiwola Olagbemiro. Olagbemiro got his Mercedes from his family then. It’s not playing football that afforded him the Mercedes then. He was playing with us at Mighty Jets along with Sam Garuba Okoye, Ismaila Mabo and Sule Kekere and the Atuegbu brothers and the rest. That time, Ismaila Mabo as the captain of Mighty Jets received N120 per game while the rest of us were paid N90 per game. So, there is no way we could afford the luxury of buying flashy cars like our new generation of players are doing. But we were very happy playing weekly for our club then because we were not playing for money but for fun and happiness.

    Regret

Let’s forget what has happened in the past. It is not my priority, but wherever there is football you will see me there.

    If not football, what?

I would have been an Islamic religion scholar. Being a Muslim, I love reading my Quran.
