  • Deliver soul-touching songs – Gospel artiste

    Adeola Ogunlade

Gospel singer, Tope Van-Lare, popularly called Tope Calculator, has appealed to Christian artists to stay focus on delivering clean and pure songs that will impact lives for Christ.

Van-Lare said this at the public launch of her new song and five track video titled Odironyedikagi featuring Emapraise and Assumpta and Calculator.
She said there were tendencies for gospel artists to compromise because of peculiar gains but they must make frantic effort to stay true to their calling in delivering songs that save souls and prepare men for heaven.
According to her: “You can make the money, it is not about money, though money is good, it makes lives easier but there is something beyond this lives which is about winning souls for Christ.
“Gospel artistes should not give up their calling despite the present economic situation of the country.
“Let’s look towards delivering songs with quality messages that touches lives because, one might gain fame and make millions but after that, what else? Let us stay focused and win souls for God.”
On what inspired the song, the talented musician, who started singing at 13, said she got inspired to write the track Odironyedikagi while working in a laboratory.
She stated it took her more than a year to writes the songs.
Van-Lanre, a graduate of Biochemistry from the University of Benin and University of Lagos, said: “The song is basically for worship and a reflection of the incredible and indescribable nature of God.
“It speaks about the endless power of God and how our lives revolve around Him.
“It is the message of the songs that have positive messages. We are in a delicate period and the economy is bad.
“I want Nigerians to find joy from within. It does not depend on their bank account or physical wealth.”
Asked how she balances working with singing, she said: “I can’t do music alone for now. Besides, I love my job, especially as it pertains to health. So my music and job kind of complement each other—one is the physical, the other spiritual.”

  • Provoking the release of Our inheritances via praise!

    Dr David Oyedepo

Welcome to another impactful week! I hope you were blessed by last week teaching. Today, we shall focus on: Provoking The Release Of Our Inheritances Via Praise!

From scriptures, we discover that one of the wonders of praise is the release of our inheritances. The Bible says, O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph. For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth. He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet. He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved (Psalm 47:1-4). However, we must understand that life is essentially a seed time and harvest time adventure. No one ever gets out of life more than what he is willing to put into it. Remember, God is not mocked; whatsoever a man sows, that also shall he reap (Genesis 8:22; Ephesians 6:8; Galatians 6:7). Furthermore, we discover that every spiritual engagement is defined as a form of labour (Hebrews 4:9-12). This implies that just as a woman goes to the labour room to deliver, we must also go through a spiritual labour room to take delivery of our hearts’ desires. Thus, there are three kinds of praise. These include:

    • General Praise: (Psalm 34:1).
    • High Praise: (Psalm 149:6).
    • Hosanna Praise: This can be described as warfare praise. When we give God hosanna praise, we are entitled to wild level of results. For instance, when the people went wild singing His hosanna as He entered into the City of Jerusalem, Jesus went wild in the temple and healed all that were sick (Matthew 21:9-16). Also, when David danced with all his might, he secured vengeance on his mockers (2 Samuel 6:1-10). No wonder the Bible records that he never lost a battle because he knew how to bring God to bear in any situation and circumstance.

    But, What Is In Praise?

    • Praise Is The Strongest Evidence Of Faith, Which Usually Culminates In Undeniable Testimonies: As it is written, And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform (Romans 4:19-21).
    • Praise Is What Determines The Returns On Our Seeds Sown–Spiritually, Physically, Materially Or Financially: The Bible says, A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled (Proverbs 18:20; see also Hebrew 13:15).
    • Praise Is The Platform For The Fearful Acts Of God: As it is written, Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders (Exodus 15:11).
    • Praise Is The Covenant Requirement For Answered Prayers: It is written, Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God (Philippians 4:6; see also Matthew 6:9, 13).
    • Fearful Praise Engenders Fearful Blessings: As it is written, Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us. God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him (Psalm 67:5-7).
    • Praise Provokes Divine Intervention: Concerning Judah, the Bible says as they began to engage warfare praise, God stepped in and all their enemies were overthrown. Thus, praise brings God into our affairs (Psalm 68:1; 2 Chronicles 20:22).
    • Praise Grants Us Access Into Our Inheritance In Christ: Whatever we discover from scriptures as our inheritance in redemption is accessible via praise (Psalm 47:1, 4).

What, Then, Are The Inheritances That Accrue To Us In Christ?

    • We Have A Heritage Of Total Health In Christ: When we engage the mystery of high praises, God releases our heritage of total health to us. It is written, But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5; see also Matthew 21:9-16).
    • We Have A Heritage Of Continuous Progress And Unending Breakthroughs In Christ: Everyone that is born again has been justified by the blood of Jesus Christ. For it is written, Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). Again, the Bible says: But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day (Proverbs 4:18). Therefore, everyone justified by God is ordained for unending breakthroughs in life. Therefore, stagnation is not our portion and praise is one of the means through which we walk into our inheritance of continuous progress and unending breakthroughs.
    • We Have A Heritage Of Favour In Christ: Favour is one of the mystery virtues of the Kingdom. It can make an heir of a slave and an official of an inmate. For instance, Joseph had favour in Portiphar’s house and an estate was placed in his command. Again, he was favoured in the prison and was made the head of the prisoners. Favour changes situation as if it never happened (Genesis 39:1-6; Psalm 5:12).
    • We Have A Heritage Of Fruitfulness In Christ: We are told from scriptures that children are a heritage of the Lord. Thus, childbearing is our heritage in Christ and the fruit of the womb is our reward (Psalm 127:3).

In conclusion, we must see our inheritance in Christ Jesus as real and praise as God’s ordained access to them. This is because we can praise our way out of any frustration, stagnation and unpleasant situations in our lives. However, you must be born again for your praise to be acceptable. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me! Now, I know I am born again! • Be deliberate about leadership development, Adeyemi tells govt

    Sunday Oguntola

Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, Lagos, Dr Sam Adeyemi, has urged governments at all levels in to be deliberate and conscious about developing leaders with selfless service to the nation.

He declared that no nation can progress without selfless leaders and sincere followers.

According to him, the nation is experiencing slow progress because most its leaders are self-centred.

Adeyemi spoke at the just-concluded annual leadership conference of the church.

According to him: “Leadership is a product of followership. A society gets the kind of leadership it desires. Our government must make conscious efforts in developing leadership potential in our younger generation.

“In Nigeria today, there is no leadership school where practical tenets of quality leadership is taught. Leaders emerged from our failed political structures and we cannot continue like that as a nation.”

He noted with dismay that there is no correlation between the numbers of religious organisations in Nigeria and impacts in the society.

“It is time for us as a people to query our beliefs in God. If you believe in God, ultimately where it’s supposed to show is in your relationship with other human beings. You must treat your fellow human beings well as commanded by God,” Adeyemi said.

He said the emphasis globally is on leadership not positions. He said leadership happens at all levels, stating “our government must rise up and rejig our current school systems.

“Some things have to give way if we must play among the comity of nation.”

Great leadership, according to him, lies with character and competence, which he lamented are lacking in the current set of leaders.

  • ‘Why I produced an all-female cast gospel film’

Bola Akande, daughter of legendary Yoruba film maker, Ishola Ogunsola aka Dr Isho Pepper, spoke with Sunday Oguntola on issues within the gospel film industry and others. Excerpts:

How did you come about the idea of an all-female cast for Behind the mask?

I honestly can’t remember the exact day I conceived the idea but it’s very much like the way God drops concepts in my mind. But I think it will be rooted in my interest in the female gender, which my father probably inculcated in me.

I grew up being encouraged and valued by my father as a female child. He loved all his girls. Even though my dad had male children, he wasn’t one of those who appreciate and celebrate male children more than the females. So, that gave me a good sense of value.

However, growing up, I saw that there were many challenges facing the female gender. Where men are the heads of corporations and doing great at many levels, the women are hardly mentioned in those areas.

Also as a young graduate, I saw some female friends trying to get a job and how they complained about either being asked to pay somebody a bribe or they were asked to sleep with them and I just wondered how would a woman be somebody if these challenges are there?

I went into filmmaking with not many female film directors in Nigeria. I felt the need to encourage women that no profession is beyond the limit and I became more interested in addressing the challenges stopping women from attaining higher posts.

Another reason for this concept is because my father died early and I watched my mother struggle to keep the family together. The pains she went through even when all her intentions were pure, she was misjudged and called different names. I knew that the female gender needs and challenges can’t be overemphasised.

So, we should talk more about some areas hardly touched and that affects us. Women should not only be mentioned when it comes to fashion and sexiness but to look into other serious life issues affecting the female gender more directly, hence the film.

Just what are you trying to achieve with it? Boost feminism or discuss the pains of womanhood?

I think feminism is increasingly being boosted thanks to the information age that we are in. Women are beginning to find their voices and I don’t think we can overdo this because we still hear of cases where women are still considered inferior to their male counterparts and this isn’t only in developing countries but all over the world.

Data from America Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that in year 2019, women still earn less than men at 79 cents to 1 dollar earned by their male counterparts, not to talk of in developing countries where there is need to educate and inform the society on these issues. So, if this film boosts feminism, I will be quite happy with that.

However, my main reason I believe is to look into some unnoticeable pains that women go through daily. Being a woman, especially in this time and age, has very many challenges different from the common ones two to three decades ago.

You go to work just like your husband, you look after your family, you are the home keeper and extended family has expectations from you.

So, many women are suffering in silence whilst you are grateful that you have a family, you can’t complain otherwise those who do not have one will see you as being ungrateful. Women are developing depression and all manners of mental health problems and that again is stigmatized.

Women cover up to avoid the stigma and many of these challenges they face, which informed the title ‘Behind Her Mask’. This is not to say that the male gender doesn’t have similar issues but the movie is made with only women so that men, husbands, children can further appreciate the women in their lives and maybe understand why some things are the way they are and also to alleviate or avoid some challenges that are faced by women and to pinpoint some available support and solutions to some of these problems.

How profitable is gospel film making based on your experience so far?

I think it depends on what form of profit we are talking about. If it’s in relation to financial gain, in my own experience, I am yet to make money from it even though I strive for quality in my movies thereby spending more money than I would have if I just wanted to share the gospel in a basic film. But I am very keen on the quality of my movies, probably because I was raised in a family where I saw what quality production really should look like and I have been to film school in England.

I wouldn’t want to do something of low or below the standard quality. However, my main aim of making movies is not money. When I am planning, my first priority is how the message will bless lives. I always write in a way that the message can bless everyone, whether Christians or not.

I want everyone to be able to engage with my movie so I plan it in a way that the quality will attract people with high taste in film as well as those who don’t really care about the quality of a film but just want content that will bless them. It is after I have satisfied that then I will start thinking of distribution and how to make money, especially so that I can reinvest into the ministry and make another high-quality movie.

And with regards to distribution, I am working with some other people on an online platform, a video- on- demand website where quality gospel movies and other morally sound movies will be available on demand. We hope to re-launch around this Christmas.

But if the profit is that are lives been blessed, I will say yes by God’s grace. We have a lot of positive feedback and testimonies from our movies coming from Christians and even atheists and that for me is highly rewarding while we await the financial blessing, God willing.

Would you say gospel films are at par with secular films in terms of production, technical inputs and aesthetics?

I believe Gospel movies in Nigeria are doing well and steadily coming up despite the fact that we don’t have a lot of money to spend on our projects like the secular sector because investors and sponsors support the secular productions.

So, I am appealing to everyone that likes good work of art that will do more than entertain, movies that will touch your soul and change your moral reasoning and also help you to change for the better leading to fruitful family lives and better societies to please invest in our projects.

Christian movies can be entertaining but must never lose the main aim of preaching the good news and changing people. A genuine Christian writer doesn’t just research and write but he or she will prayerfully write the mind of God and trust God to use the message to touch those whom it is meant for.

However, we are coming up. Since 2016 by God’s grace, I have made movies that are cinema quality, 4K resolution and technically and aesthetically sound. I have received feedback from cinema film distributors who have commended them.

However, we are yet to receive a theatrical release because we have not featured popular faces since cinemas companies are concerned about the box office returns for their business. But, I am determined to move on and trust God for the needed breakthrough.

Why do you prefer cinemas to VCD distribution channel?

I grew up seeing my parents put their movies in the cinema so I never wanted anything less. Also, I really loved going to see movies in cinemas when we were growing up. I love seeing the larger than life pictures, so deciding to go in that direction becomes easy when I became a filmmaker.

I also want my movies to be available on all platforms and I know that once i have a good story inspired by God and I ensure that it is well written all I need to do is to invest more time and money and God has been so gracious to me. I believe that I have not even started. I have a dream, I have a vision and I am trusting God to bring it alive so that my movies will be seen in great and uncommon places.

Are gospel film makers supported enough to do more?

Financially I don’t think so yet and that maybe because we are not reaching out to sponsors yet. They don’t see us as a business venture yet and I don’t see why not. I understand that making a film for profit has been very challenging in Nigeria, especially with the issues of piracy.

Nobody wants to borrow money to make a film only for it be pirated and lose investors’ money but i think things are changing, there are more platforms where you can realise the money back. Like any business, investors only need to weigh the risks and see the viability and I think it is viable. There is a huge gap for gospel movies to fill worldwide, which is why Hollywood studios were making Bible-themed movies.

I think gospel filmmakers need to create awareness and seek financial support to increase our visibility on all platforms. The Kendrick brothers were supported by their church when they first started now their budget is huge and comparable to secular independent or even some Hollywood studio movies.

Mel Gibson didn’t get funding from the studios because they were scared of his contents being ‘Christian, anti-semitism’. But I’m sure that those studios would have regretted not funding Passion of the Christ because up till date it’s still the highest-grossing R rated movie ever made.

Do you feel this path is good enough to sustain and keep you going for the rest of your life?

Absolutely! It is good enough for me. I believe that this is exactly the reason why I am made. I have absolute fulfillment in doing it. Also, I am not in it for money. I don’t think money is everything. I am not in it for fame. I don’t need to be famous to live a good life.

I love the life that God has given me. I don’t have money stashed in my bank account but I am not in lack of anything good. If all these come, fine, I will appreciate it but they are not my main purpose.

If I have more money it means more high-quality movies and I will also be able to bless others and give back to society more and of course better life.

  • Hold government accountable, Adeboye charges Nigerians

     Adeola Ogunlade

GENERAL Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor Enoch Adeboye has tasked Nigerians to demand accountability from elected representatives.

This, he said, will go a long in deepening democratic and participatory governance in Nigeria

Adeboye gave the charge last Sunday at the Special Prayer and Thanksgiving for Professors, lecturers, teachers, youth Corps, students and their families at the RCCG Headquarters, The Throne of Grace, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

The event tagged rising stars attracted thousands of students, lecturers and academia for different parts of the country

He said Nigeria should be prepared to hold leaders to account.

“The issue of song praising corrupt leaders and given them titles is actually establishing, amplifying and concretising deterioration of the state.

“In the community where I grew up, if anyone is found to be a thief, he or she will be ex-communicated from the community but today people give excuses for corrupt leaders because he or she is from their tribe or culture.”

Adeboye, who spoke through the Assistant General Overseer, Administration and Personnel, Pastor Johnson Odesola, said: “I have not seen anywhere who has gone to jail and is still in politics and holding public offices.

“It will take goodwill and strong courage for Nigeria to move forward. God will help us, but we should learn from nations where law and order has broken down”.

Adeboye noted that Nigeria was expected to be a rising star but bedeviled by a lot of problems ranging from insincerity, non-challant attitude towards accountability and corruption that have all continued to dwarf the status of the nation as a star in Africa and comity of nations.

Read Also: Adeboye urges prayers for security personnel

He described ‘star’ as a burning gas that needs a substance inside to become a rising star, adding that leaders in Nigeria would continue to be ordinary burning gas until they allow God to empower them from inside, without whom they can do nothing.

“They have been spending money on education, health, roads and light but with nothing to show for it because the vacuum of the true and righteous God in them is not filled.

“God is the solution to our problems and as long as leaders refuse to recognize this salient truth and give Him position in their hearts, they would continue to chase shadows and have no answer to their confession that Nigeria’s problems are so complicated that as they are solving one, other bigger ones are raising up their ugly heads to the extent that the latter would even rubbish the problems they thought they have solved,” he said.

Adeboye further charged government to stop paying lip service to education but fund it robustly and equip higher institutions with every necessary aid to carry out research and begin to perform like similar institutions in developed nations.

He said the government should show more commitment and pay more attention to uplifting our universities where we have the best brains, adding that given the proper environment and needed tools to function, they would bring innovations into many sectors and boost our image and economy.

  • Understanding the virtues of praise!

    Dr. David Oyedepo

WELCOME to another exciting week! I hope you were blessed by last week teaching. Today, we shall focus on: Understanding The Virtues Of Praise!

We understand from scriptures that praise is appreciating God for His Person.  That is, we just appreciate and worship Him for who He is. Our high rating of God causes His praise to flow from us. As it is written, Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely (Psalm 147:1). God is excited and motivated by praise. We can get God cheaply with praise. For instance, David the man after God’s heart became God’s darling by praise. God’s heart was always with him. The whole of Saul’s army could not handle him! If we want to see God back us up, then, we should live a life of endless praise.  Also, praise will launch us into a life of endless miracles; which will stop us   from sweating to start winning in the race of life.

I want us to know that praise is a God given weapon in our hands with which to humiliate the devil. It is God’s medicine against the enemy. Every time we obey the law of praise, we silence our adversaries. Everyone who lives in praise carries authority with him because he has the backing of heaven.  For instance, in 1 Samuel 17:50, we saw how David the praise giant, defeated goliath effortlessly because he had the backing of heaven. This shows that praise is the path of life; the winning ticket anytime. With the anointing of praise upon our lives, we become an all-round winner in the battles of life.

Furthermore, praise is God’s hotline. We can pray amiss but we cannot praise amiss. Whenever you come to a tough situation, give a tough praise! When we see gross darkness, bring gross light by giving God gross praise. For anything that will take God, give it praise! Praise will disarm any devil from hell any day and anytime. A simple obedience to the law of faith will hook us on to the miraculous line of life. Also, to be ‘Thank full’ is what makes praise genuine. If we are not thankful, we cannot be praiseful. We must first be thankful before we can be joyful and we must be joyful before we can sing, otherwise our song becomes mere noise.

What Then Are The Types Of Praise?

    • Heartfelt Praise: Only a song that comes from a merry heart is acceptable to God. That is, a protest-free heart, an accusation-free heart, a heart that is bubbling like that of a baby and singing the heavens open. As it is written, …Is any merry? let him sing… (James 5:13). Every time we praise God from the depth of our hearts, our enemy is disarmed. It is the cheapest way to disarm opposition. However, it takes a childlike faith to keep rolling and dancing when it seems like things are not working. Genuine heartfelt praise brings us in contact with heaven’s wonders.
    • Perfected Praise: Those who walk in the realm of perfected praise never suffer defeat. That is the realm David walked in. It is written, …Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise (Matthew 21:16; see also Psalm 8:2). The devil cannot handle us when we walk in that realm. That is why he will do anything to drag us off it. The ever winning Christians are the ever praising ones. When we praise, we look away from what we think we do not have to who (God) we have; because the One we have holds everything together and will always satisfy our heart’s desires.

What Are The Virtues Embedded In Praise?

    • Praise Is A Weapon: Praise is one of the most strategic weapons in spiritual warfare. Only what can overcome God will overcome the authentic weapon of praise. Praise appears cheap but it is a very powerful weapon because it brings the Almighty on the scene. The weapon of praise is handed down to us to deal with the enemy, not just to feel good. The Bible says, … Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise (Matthew 21:16; see also Psalm 8:2). Nothing is beyond the mysterious operation of the weapon of praise. Praise as a weapon is used to get God on our side and it is the surest way into God’s presence. For it is written, But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel (Psalm 22:3, 100:4).
    • Praise Is An Instrument Of Honour: Praise is an instrument of honour put in the hands of the saints to make living honourable. It is a special honour bestowed upon the saints. As we exalt God, we endear ourselves to Him. When God is pleased, the pains of life will be over. It is an honour to us from God, that in praise, we execute judgement upon our enemies. As it is written, To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord (Psalm 149:9). When we are in praise, our enemies become helpless.

In summary, no reason is strong enough to cast us down. Thus, praise is a weapon of honour that God has put in our hands to make living honourable for us. However, you must be a bonafide child of God to benefit from the virtues of praise. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. In his sermon, Supervising Apostle Yemi Adewusi, of C and S, Oke Ibukun, said the anniversary signifies a milestone for the church.

According to him, 70th adoption anniversary is a celebration of freedom from bondage and sin, having the Holy Spirit and the ability to relate with God directly.

“We started celebrating this adoption 70 years ago, we were in bondage but we are now born again. The adoption means that we are no more in sin but we are now sons and daughter of God.”

He added that the celebration was also an avenue for people to become ‘born again’ and for those already ‘born again’ to renew their dedication to God.

He urged the gathering to develop a father-son relationship with God, adding that Christians should persevere, stick to God and not to be distracted by the challengers in the country, but be ready to hold leaders accountable.

Supervising Apostle Jacob Hodonu, of C and S Mount of Protection, said the anniversary is a reminder to all that Christ has adopted them and they now have the rights to be called sons and daughters of God.

He urged the Church no to take the grace of God for granted, noting that the price for salvation was paid for.

“We are to acknowledge Christ in all we do and work towards being part of the Kingdom of God.

“We should not deviate from the part of our elders who has showed us the way that Jesus is the truth, the way and the light,” he said.

He urged Christians to keep praying for the nation, be righteous and live right, adding that the leaders should do the right thing because posterity will judge them.
