  • RCCG empowers 200 job seekers

No fewer than 200 job seekers have graduated from a month-long skill acquisition training organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Lagos Province 44.

The training sponsored by the church aimed at equipping them with requisite skills and vocational capability.

They were trained in agro-allied, event and decoration, bead and hat-making, website design, graphic design, shoe-making, aluminum, catering, generator repairs, soap and deodorant-making, beautician and fashion design.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Pastor-in-charge of Province 44, Amos Emovon, said: ’’Last year, when we ran the skills acquisition programme, I asked my son in high school to join the shoe-making section. Today, I buy shoes made by him.

“It is our aim that having so empowered you, you will become a source of joy to your family and to yourself.”

The Lagos State Training Institute helmsperson, Mrs. Bolanle Arikawe-Out, enjoined the graduands to be focused, persistent and demonstrate integrity in their dealings with their would-be customers.

Lagos Island Local Government Vocational/Skill Acquisition Institute’s assistant principal, Akamo Olabode, stated that with the RCCG training members, the society will become more self-reliant and self-sufficient.

One of the graduands from the catering section, Akinshola Dorcas, expressed joy that the province has fulfilled her dreams of becoming self-reliant.

  • The full armour of God (11)

The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right.

We are not to conform to the lifestyle of this world but we are to be transformed by the renewal of our minds daily. How is this going to be possible? It will be possible only through the deliberate study of the word of God as written for us in the Bible and obedience to it. Without which it is very impossible not to conform to this world’s corrupt pattern and system.

We are constantly in battles in this world and those who will be winners are those who study and hide God’s word in their hearts to obey it. The word of God renews our minds and makes it impossible for Satan to capture and deceive us into following after mundane things of this world. Satan tempts us with the LUST OF THE EYE, LUST OF THE FLESH AND THE PRIDE OF LIFE. No one is above temptation, Satan our adversary is moving back and forth all the earth seeking for whom he may destroy. If Jesus could be tempted, sure enough we shall be tempted too.

Before Jesus began His earthly ministry, the accuser of brethren (Satan) came to tempt Him, in order to make Him lose favour before God and not accomplish His purpose on earth. In those days, after Jesus humbled Himself to be baptised by John the Baptist, as He came up from the water, the heavens opened and the spirit of God descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him. Then a voice came from Heaven, which said, “You are My beloved Son; in whom I am well pleased.

This declaration by God, that Jesus is His beloved Son in whom He is well pleased got Satan mad with anger, jealousy, and envy. He then sought ways to bring Him down; he started this by tempting Him to commit sin. This is what happens as soon as you give your life to Christ, Satan will be so jealous of the great position you now occupy as the child of the Most High God. He will do all within his power to see you fail and fall short of that glorious position, but you are not to fear for Jesus is still very much alive to help you and me daily to overcome Satan and be victorious just as He. Through Jesus’ temptation, He showed us how to overcome temptation.

After Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry and the devil came to tempt Him, saying, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered him and said, “It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Please take note of the most important need of man- The Word of God. As soon as Jesus quoted this scripture, the devil did not contest it; the word of God is indeed living and powerful. Where did Jesus get this saying? He got it from the written scriptures.

It was quoted by Moses in Deuteronomy 8:2-3, when he addressed the Israelites, during their 40years wilderness journey saying, “ you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years In the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what is in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.” Continuous unbelief and disobedience to God’s word caused all of those whom God miraculously delivered from Egypt to die in the wilderness; they saw God’s wonders yet did not fully follow Him. They failed the test and died without inheriting the land God promised them, except for Joshua and Caleb who did not doubt God’s word but believed it fully.

Again, the devil took Jesus up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: “He shall give His angels charge over you and in their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” This quotation is from the book of Psalm 91:11-12; the devil used it with the intention to mislead Jesus into a foolish and sinful act. The devil knows the scriptures, but the people who the word was given to live in ignorance of it. Jesus said to him, “It is written again, you shall not test the Lord your God.” Again, the devil did not contest this word. This shows victory the word of God gives to those living by it. Imagine what could have happened if Jesus did not have good knowledge and understanding of the word of God and its right application?

A young girl told me how a married man, old enough to be her father and a prominent person in a well-known church, lured her to have sex with him. He told her that every single person is having premarital sex, that no one can do without sex and that people who claim they are not doing it are liars and deceivers. After much deceit and pressure, he succeeded in getting her to have sex with him, he disvirgined her. He told lies, twisted the scriptures just to satisfy his lustful desire, such men are so much in our society today, If they do not repent, surely they will face the wrath of God someday. Some will even say, ‘God is a merciful God, let’s do it, we will ask Him for forgiveness and He will forgive”, hmm, why do you put God to test? A very dangerous move indeed.

The devil knows the scriptures but uses it to mislead and deceive the ignorant who have refused to study the word for themselves and live by it. The devil acts through human beings- Satan indwells man to use him for evil tasks. Watch and pray! Study the Bible by/for yourself in order to overcome the evil of our days.

For the third time, the devil took Jesus up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and he said to Him, “all these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “away with you Satan! For it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve”. He still could not contest the written and spoken word by the One who lived by it. Then the devil left Him.

Imagine such deceit and counterfeit offer from the devil to the One who God declared His begotten Son in whom He is well pleased, what other earthly possession, and wealth can ever be compared to the greatest honour Jesus has. Having the whole world can never be compared to being the child of the Most High God and Satan knows this fact very well.

Using the word of God, Jesus overcame all of the devil’s temptations.

As long as you and I study our Bibles daily and decide to live by its truth, then we too will be armed with the word to defeat the tempter when he comes, for he will surely come. Satan can contest anything but never the word of God; he is simply powerless over a godly person who understands the power in the word of God in fighting battles.

Lord, please help us love to study your word the Bible daily and live by its truths in Jesus name- amen.

    Text: Ephesians 6:10-18, Hebrews 4:12, Psalm 119:11, Matthew 3-13-17, 4: 1-11, 2Timothy 3:16.

  • Church launches foundation for late overseer

Members of Christ’s Disciples Central Fellowship last weekend inaugurated a foundation in memory of its late General Superintendent, Pastor Joe Solomon who died on October 17, 2016.

The inauguration in Lagos was preceded by a lecture titled: Following the path of integrity.

It was delivered by General Overseer of Treasure Word Evangelical Ministries, Apostle Ralph Williams.

Williams described his late mentor and teacher as an upright and devout Christian who lived a life of integrity and uprightness that has outlived him.

While faulting clerics who live big and seek titles at the expense of the church, he urged leaders to help in the fight against corruption by upholding their integrity and values for the good of the nation.

Lead Pastor of the church, Rev. Emmanuel Akpan, explained beneficiaries of the foundation will include orphans, those in social need and up to age 14; widows from 60 years and above as well as those with the Down syndrome disease.

Giving a run-down of how the church began operations on October 5, 1990 as a prayer group, Akpan noted it has grown to have 26 branches in Nigeria and abroad, adding the foundation was formed to honour his legacies and keep his memories alive.

On the church’s successor, he said will be chosen based on the constitution of the church.

“He has implanted in us how to live a life of integrity, and that integrity must be sustained for the continuity of the church.”

  • TCAO celebrates a decade of touching lives

After a decade of offering hope to the hopeless and uplifting the downtrodden, The Counselling Ambassadors Organisation (TCAO), a faith-based Non- Governmental Organisation(NGO) last Sunday rolled out the drums to thank God.

Its founder and President, Pastor (Mrs.) Regina Obasa, said only God allowed the organisation to take off and affect so many lives within a short time.

She said TCAO has been able to offer timely counseling to hundreds of people that have saved from the precipice of despair.

Obasa said:”We have been able to touch lives by His grace. We have saved many from death and the lure of the world.

‘God has helped us and we have nothing to give in return but praises.”

On what has made the group so successful, she said: “The essence of the counsel we give to people is to remind them that one day we will stand before our maker to give report of what we have done on earth and we would always want you to remember that.

“Whatever we do on earth, let us remember that one day we won’t be able to wear the clothes we are wearing again.

“We won’t be able to wear the shoes we are wearing again and somebody will wear it for us and if we were there in the Spirit, we still won’t be able to do those things.”

The celebration coincided with the 10th edition of its annual praise concert tagged Berachah.

The concert with the theme praising the ancient of days attracted hundreds with Evangelist Bola Are leading other gospel artistes for the thanksgiving service.

  • ‘Why I closed down our church’s branches’

‘Why I closed down our church’s branches’

General Overseer of The King’s Chapel Ibadan, Rev. (Dr) Lekan Babatunde, was a former lecturer at the University of Ibadan. He speaks with Sunday Oguntola on his exploits in the ministry and sundry issues. Excerpts:

Who did you find yourself in the ministry?

I studied Hospital Management and Philosophy in the US. When I came back, I was working in UCH for some time. I was in charge of the clinical services but I wasn’t fulfilled. Then I decided to go back to the academics.

By His grace I happened to be a brilliant student. As a matter of fact, I went to the US with the Federal Government scholarship. When I got to UI and they saw my performance, they offered me a teaching job straightaway.

Even my first degree was in teaching as a graduate assistant. But the call of God upon me was so urgent that I had to leave and submitted my PhD thesis to United Bible University in Lagos. Then after I taught in UI for four years, I abandoned it for full- time ministry.

Philosophers and theologians hardly meet. How did you cope?

That is true but don’t forget God can do all things. When He needs you, He takes you. He takes you even if you were born by atheists. He still takes you and uses you regardless of the philosophical background. When it has to do with my God, philosophy bows. God is first and any philosophical theory bows.

When it comes to priority, the word of God is above all and philosophical theory comes next.

How did the call come, was it when you are in UI?

From my childhood, I have always known that God was going to use me. One of the very unfailing experiences I had that authenticated the call was when I was visiting my aunt in Abeokuta. All of a sudden, I was about to enter the house and three big angels appeared to me. They were very big and massive not standing vertically.

They were standing horizontally. Then all of a sudden the one in the third position flew to number one and was facing me as if to give a message. But as an immature Christian, I just shouted to my aunt to come and see angels. By the time she rushed down to look, they had vanished.

One time again, I was going to my place of work in UCH and at the secretariat roundabout, I met this crippled guy. Something in me just said ‘go and help that man.’

I knew it was God asking me to pray for him but I was afraid. I thought suppose I pray for this man and nothing happened. I ignored it and left. I got to my place of work. I could not do anything. The burden was so overwhelming to the extent that my boss asked what the problem was.

So I went back to pray for him.  Just like Acts 3, he stood up and walked. All those were among the signs. The third one that actually pushed me was that of a girl called Agatha, who was dead in the house opposite us in Bodija.

My daughter was there because we heard weeping and she said, ‘daddy something is telling me Agatha will rise up.’ So, I went there and prayed for her. In fact, they have brought the ambulance that will take her to the mortuary. She woke up and the parents started coming to church.

With all these happening one after the other, I was doing God’s work part time but I said no more. No more philosophy, no more teaching. Then I tendered my resignation and left the university services.

And would you say you are fulfilled in full time ministry?

I wouldn’t say that because each time I looked at what I have done and what is still ahead, it is like I am still like 10 percent. I am not fulfilled yet but I am satisfied that I answered His call. I have no regret because there is still a long way to go.

But some people would say if you are still in the academics, you certainly would have become a professor.

My students are professors and of course I know.

Do you look back and say I wished I was on the other side?

To be sincere, once in a while when you meet one or two challenges, I will say to myself, ‘if I were still in the academics I will have become a professor by late 90s or early 2000’. But I will quickly repent and apologise to God.

So once in a while that happens especially when you see your colleagues that you are more even brighter than. We are human beings. It is only God that has no fault and we all stand by His grace.

Are you pleased with Christianity today?

When we were coming up as believers, we knew how the body of Christ was. When you do business with a Christian then, you can sleep at ease. You leave your property or wife with any Christian in those days and it just will not occur to you that something could go wrong.

You don’t have to do that today. Things have changed drastically. It is painful when you try to say let’s go back to the drawing table and then put off what needs to be put off. You offend some people who think you are old school. Some would think that things have changed that it is not what it should be.

So it is a lot of frustration but one thing is certain the Christianity practiced today is not what the fathers handled over to us. Today, people run after signs and wonders.

But are you not old school?

That is the frustration I get all the time. Jet age and all those have changed things but we still try to maintain God’s standards. God does not change. Countries change and Presidents changes but God remains the same. He is still the old school God. He has not been modernised and they need to understand and face that reality.

Do you get insinuations that your church is not massive because of your stance?

I do but one has stood tall and counted the costs. For me, it is either you are moving with the crowd or God. I am not even moved by what they are saying. It doesn’t even bother me a bit.

But these days every pastor wants a mega church?

    Yea

    Not having one doesn’t move?

    At all

    Why?

I am not moved because we are not in the days of numbers. I don’t even give it a thought.

Some people will also point Jesus had a crowd-pulling ministry.

He had a crowd pulling ministry but at the end of the day, how many people remained? He met with thousands but at the end of the day, 500 were left and he gave them instructions.

At the end, only 120 in the Upper room received the Holy Ghost. So if I had 10,000 people and 900 go to heaven, I’m just deceiving myself. But if I have 1000 and I take all to heaven, is that not a great work? That is the way to look at it.

Some people will say your disposition is why there is no financial prosperity to show

Of course, you count the costs before you go ahead. All these I have counted and I am ready for. It doesn’t bother me as long as the bible says godliness with contentment is a great gain. As long as it befits God, it befits me. He takes care of me. He meets my needs and that is all I am after.

But sometimes when you have needs, does it come to your mind it couldn’t have happened if you had a 1000- seater congregation?

Because we are human beings, we are flesh and blood, it comes. But like David, I say my soul be still. Certainly when I see some of my colleagues that don’t understand the Scriptures as you do, they have not seen the signs and wonders that you see and they can boast of millions, you begin to wonder if there is anything wrong with you. But then you count the costs and you talk to yourself.

Is it that you have been hiding all these years?

It is not that I have been hiding. I tried as much as possible to do things at God’s pace and whatever He asks me to, I do. It is not that I have been hiding but I am just not noisy.

    By nature?

By nature and even the things of God are not noisy.

You have been in full time ministry since 1987. How many branches does your church have?

We used to have many across the country, even outside the country. But we shut them down because of the frustration. So I said we need to go back to the drawing table so that if we need to take 100 or 1000, we know that these are the ones going to heaven.

I called all parish pastors to retreat to the headquarters and those that wanted to leave should feel free to.

    And then people left?

    Yes.

    Why?

It is one of those problems that this one does not want to change at all or is too rigid. I heard a very honest man of God preached one time. He said if we were to go back to those messages we used to preach in those days, we will lose all of these big congregations.

And I agree we will lose two-third of them and I know what he was saying because I used to know them even before I became a pastor. I used to follow them to meetings and all. But it is not everybody that is ready to pay the price, which is too bad.

If you have done over 30 years of preaching, you should have ministers coming for guidance

That is the thing about it again. Those people, even if they are not doing the right thing, they know how to talk. They come but sometimes they don’t listen. They recognise me. They know I am different but they may not change.

When you shut down the branches locally and overseas, did some people wonder if you were okay?

A friend called me from Italy and said ‘Rev, you have to take it easy. We can still go ahead and make corrections.’ One of the things that really pushed me to do was our church is a conservative one.

It‘s not that we don’t believe in prosperity, faith, miracles and all those things. But we are not all out there for considering prosperity as the end. They are means to whatever you want to achieve.

I started seeing strange things in our branches. In one of our conventions, there was choreography. I was put off by the dancing steps and all that. I said it is better we come back and look at where we have started. But the pastors didn’t feel that way and left.

  • Gateways to your escape!

Wickedness and cruelty reign in the world. As it is written: We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness (1 John 5:18-19; see also Psalm 74:20). Again, we understand from scriptures that there are invisible forces of wickedness that are all out to trap and bring us into captivity. Though we can’t see them, they pervade the “atmosphere of wickedness” that carpets the entire world. In most cases, these forces are mightier than our capacity. In order words, they are forces from hell which no human capacity can resist. This is why the Bible says:  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12; see also Psalms 91:5-6; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5; 1 John 5:18-19).

However, the good news is that God has made available for us a way of escape from the wickedness, torture, torments and afflictions of the powers of darkness. That is why we must have a working knowledge of our rights to God’s gateways to our escape, or we would remain trapped and oppressed by the devil and his cohorts.

What are these gateways that guarantee our escape?

We must be saved: After the fall of Adam, God cursed mankind and we became captives of the devil, who had the legal rights to torment, torture and afflict humanity as he pleases. In other words, humanity became poultry birds under the compelling constitution of the kingdom of darkness that is governed by the devil (the poultry farmer). That is the genesis of our captivity.

Nevertheless, Jesus came to set every captive free by dying on the Cross of Calvary and resurrecting on the third day. Therefore, we must be born again (salvation), before we can be redeemed from the curse and become legally free from the captivity of the devil. Until we are saved, we are not candidates for escape because we are still under the constitution of the kingdom of darkness. We discover from scriptures that salvation is our guaranteed escape from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of God’s dear Son, Jesus. That is why the Bible says: How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him (Hebrews 2:3; see also Genesis 3: 14-19; Colossians 1:13).

Therefore, the “great salvation” is our grand escape from the wickedness of the wicked. Again, the Bible says that via salvation, we are re-positioned far above our captors. Speaking on how God re-positioned Christ after resurrection, the Bible says: Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come (Ephesians 1:20-21).

The Bible further says that God …hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6).

This means that at salvation, we are re-positioned far above the realm in which our captors operate; as such, our escape is automatic. This makes redemption our foundation for escape. We must therefore stop playing church and begin to walk in the reality of redemption, because being a member of a family and just staying in the house are two different things.

Before I became born again 47 years ago, I erroneously believed that since I was born in a church building, I must have been saved from heaven. But, thank God for the woman who led me to Christ and told me that salvation is a personal decision to accept Christ as one’s Lord and Saviour. That guaranteed my escape from the clutches of the wicked.

Keep trusting God: The three Hebrew men escaped the fiery furnace because they had absolute trust in God. The Bible says: Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God (Daniel 3:28).Daniel also escaped the lions’ den that was orchestrated by wicked men because he believed in his God. It is written: Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So, Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God (Daniel 6:23; see also Psalms 125:1-3; Isaiah 53:1; Ephesians 6:16). When our trust in God becomes unshakable, our escape becomes real and undeniable. This is because those who trust in the Lord cannot be trapped by the devil.

Don’t be deceived, the wickedness of the wicked is real and there is no other way of escape from the wickedness, torture, torments and afflictions of the powers of darkness other than being born-again. Are you born again? Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord? If you haven’t, you can do so as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”
