  • West African pastoral trainers discuss succession

Pastoral trainers drawn from the West African region gathered last week in Lagos for four days to consider ways of passing the torch to the upcoming generation.

It was the consensus that the faith can only be sustained by conscious and strategic mentorship spearheaded by healthy pastors.

Tagged West Africa Pastoral Trainers Congress (WAPTRICO), the conference was organised by the International Church Growth Ministries.

The convener, Dr Francis Bola Akin-John, said Christian leaders must invest in themselves formally and informally to be able to pass on the torch.

He stated exemplary leaders must teach people to be Jesus disciples and not the disciples of GO.

According to him:”There is still space for mentoring in ministry. Every GO and pastor must go through two phases in their lifetimes.

“The first is the 20 years in ministry. They must be able to bless lives, heal the sick, help the oppress, help the widows, the needy, be a source of blessings, pray for people and so on

“And they should consciously move to the phase two of their lives, which should be on building, training, embracing, releasing, of the younger pastors into the ministry.”

He said those who want their ministries to outlast them must invest in upcoming generation through training and mentorship.

“Where you start doesn’t matter; it is where you end that counts. Ministry is not to glorify self but pass on the baton to the next generation,” he stressed.

Rev. Ndu Akuchie encouraged ministers to embrace change saying they must be updated to keep in touch with modern trends.

Akuchie, who is Executive Secretary, Nigeria Association for Theological Education (NATE), said theological curriculums as well as matters must also reflect changing environments.

“Many of our theological institutions and pastoral training programmes are still clinging to old ways they had always done things despite the obvious failures resulting from such methods,” he pointed out.

To Rev. Johnny Johnson, trainers must adopt Jesus training method, which was teaching the whole truth as against half-truths.

He assured the best thing is when ministry outlasts the minister, stating that it could be counterproductive for founders to die without handing over or a good succession plan.

He advised ministers to train their successors and encourage people with spiritual gifts to work so that when they are gone, the work can continue.

“The testimonies have been uncountable. There have been barren women who became pregnant and brought forth their babies to bless the God of perfection. They bring them for thanksgiving every year by September, which we dedicated to Alabiamo Day being the ninth month of the year.

“The date is always every 3rd Saturday of every month, thus the next one is coming up on May 20th, 2017.

“We have a 62year old woman from Ile-Ife who gave birth to a girl,” he said.

Similarly, Pastor Joshua stressed that God has used the programme to deliver women suffering from up to seven years of barrenness, who became blessed with kids when they attended the programme.

Speaking on the various testimonies beyond childbearing, the Prophet said: “There was a special testimony during our recent edition by Mrs Murtala who testified to what God did through Alabiamo water in raising of his dead brother to life even when doctors confirmed him dead.

“Alabiamo is not only for childbearing since God Almighty is a miracle working God, whose works or wonders surpasses human understanding. We will be glad to have you join us in this May edition.”

  • THE FULL ARMOUR OF GOD (9)

Sub-Theme: The Strong Belt of Truth

    Topic: The word of Truth

The word of Truth that you know, believe, and abide in will set you free from the fear of failure and builds you to know that ‘with God ALL things are possible’.

The story of David in the Bible is still one that strengthens me always. Though a little boy, Bible scholars say he was about 15 years old when he gained victory for his nation; that which the King and the warriors of his country could not do, David, the youth did. His faith and trust in His God gave him victory.

David had a personal relationship and fellowship with God. While in the field tending his father’s sheep, he killed lion and bear, with his bare hands just by trusting in God. The field was his place of training by God, where he also practiced alone with God. I believe that David meditated on the word of God while in the field. He declared the word of God as he faced Goliath- the giant of Philistines, who tormented his nation Israel. His faith and courage were from God’s word; the word he declared had power and was effective because he lived by it.

Only David knew who God made Israel to be, he knew that they were the armies of the living God, none of Saul’s army knew this truth, not even Saul the King. They left God out of their battle and decided to trust in their own understanding; trusting in their sophisticated man made armours. No wonder they ran whenever Goliath confronted them.

We need men and women who know the word of God to lead this nation Nigeria into God’s purpose, not people who trust only in their ability and expertise. God is the only one who will get us to our expected end. As Saul continually ignored God’s word, not willing to obey Him fully, God rejected him as king and sought David; a young man whose heart yearns for God, ready to do God’s will fully. God testified of him saying, “I have found a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” so God replaced Saul with David.

Every nation belongs to God, we should submit to His Lordship and in our saviour Jesus, in order to experience good success. A success that will take us to heaven at the end of our pilgrim here on earth.

David, though not born when God chose Israel to be the nation where salvation will come through to the whole world, knew the word of God concerning his nation Israel, because he studied to know it. See the words he spoke to Goliath when he faced him: He said to him, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day, the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. This day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’S, and He will give you into our hands.”

With these words, David ran towards Goliath, put his hand in his bag, and took out a stone; and slung it and struck Goliath’s forehead and he fell on his face to the ground and died. David’s stone and sling did not kill Goliath; it was his strong faith in God Almighty that killed him.

All the Goliaths frustrating Nigeria can be defeated, if only we have FAITH in the true and living God, and faith comes through the word of God.

I was discussing with my mummy in the Lord, telling her that the reason people go from one ‘prayer’ house to another seeking solution to their problems is because they do not know God on an intimate level, this is so because they do not study His word to believe and live by it. We have the weapon (the Bible) in our hands, which our fathers of old gave their blood in gruesome persecution in order to make it available to us in the language we understand. Why should we not get our help from God’s word? Imagine having the word of God with you, yet you hardly open it. The Bible is the Word of God- the God who created the whole universe, the Almighty, the LORD OF HOSTS. When you abide in His word, you will know the Truth and the Truth will set you free from every bondage and affliction. People rather choose to live by their own understanding and depend on fellow man for help. As we study God’s word, we will get to know who He is, His ways and how He wants us to live.

O Lord, please open our hearts to conceive this truth, that we may know the importance of your word, help us love to read and obey your word in Jesus name- amen.

Jesus concluded His sermon on the Mount of Olives, with these words, “Whoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: the rain descended, the floods came, the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall. For it was founded on the rock.

“But everyone who hears these sayings of mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: “the rain descended, the floods came, the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell, and great was its fall.

Let him who has ears hear the word of God.

  • Nigerian band wins music competition in Cairo

Jesus People Enabled band, a Christian group comprising physically challenged musicians, has emerged winner of the first anniversary of Awladna International Art Forum for the Gifted.

The band, which started eight years ago, defeated other contestants from 28 countries, including the United States of America (USA) and Germany, among others, to win the competition in far-away Cairo, Egypt.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was part of the eminent personalities that watched the group demonstrate musical prowess by generating different sounds with their bodies at the event.

The orchestra appeared in splendid costume each day and engaged the audience at the Civic Centre Cairo to an electrifying performance.

Guests at the event savoured the magnitude of God’s love for mankind as the group demonstrated their vocal prowess on stage with inspirational and motivational gospel songs.

They were the latest sensation in Cairo because of the group’s unique style that distinguishes it from the rest.

The melody touches the mind and reaches deeply into the soul, always leaving the audiences and followers yearning for more.

Head of the musical band, Dokumbo Oyejobi, told reporters, “Our goal is to prove to people that there is ability in disability and that God can use any willing souls for his glory.”

He added: “We were not told that it was a competition among 28 countries including United State, Germany. It was unplanned.

“We were only invited but not to compete until we got there and we were told we were going to be in competition with other contestants from 28 countries. It was indeed an amazing experience.”

On how the band emerged victorious, he shared: “We play different music styles from Juju to highlife and other genres of music.

“We want to able to preach the gospel irrespective of our challenges. God can use any man and we are happy to be instrument in HJis hands for the Great Commission.”

  • Engaging the power of revelation for miracle jobs!

Darkness is today fast covering the earth and gross darkness the people. We see industries shutting down, businesses folding up in a number of nations with economic uncertainties in most parts of the world in fufilment of scriptures.

Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee (Isaiah 60:1-2).

The Bible says: And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in diverse places. All these are the beginning of sorrows (Matthew 24:6-8; see also Malachi 4:1, 2).

According to scriptures, things will get worse, prophetically, for the world but God has ordained our exemption. That means, the tougher things get, the brighter and higher we soar. However, our exemption is only guaranteed by light, because the dominion of light over darkness is instant and unquestionable. It is written: And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not (John 1:5). When light comes in; darkness steps out. There will never be a contention between darkness and light. Hence, the negative impact of these end-time prophetic scriptures will not affect us as long as we walk in light and operate according to the revelation of the truth. It is important to understand that light also connotes revelation, which simply means spiritual understanding of the truth. It is accessing the mysteries behind scriptural stories. Anyone can have literal understanding of the truth as long as he/she is literate; but not everyone can access revelation, as it is the exclusive preserve of the redeemed. Therefore, it is important that we have real value for light (revelation); otherwise, an ignorant believer will experience the same things unbelievers suffer. It is written: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge… (Hosea 4:6). That is why our only guarantee for exemption is light. Jesus said: …I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life (John 8:12). Jesus is the living Word; thus, when we walk in the light of scriptures we have the light of life; therefore, we cannot stumble. As stated earlier, as a result of the economic holocaust pervading the world, businesses are folding up and organizations are downsizing. This means that people are rendered jobless and those seeking job opportunities cannot be employed. Contractors and suppliers cannot get customers, as market men and women record low sales. In fact, people cannot engage productively, daily. However, when we catch a revelation of our exemption, we cannot suffer what the world suffers. As it is written: When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person (Job 22:29).

    • But, what is the Assurance of our Exemption? God hates idleness.

In the parable by Jesus in Matthew 20:1:6-7), the ‘householder’ is God, the Father, as seen in Ephesians 2:19. He went out early in the morning to hire labourers into His vineyard and after He had agreed with them on the payment, He sent them out to work. This shows that God has something profitable for every member of His household. Furthermore, God even questioned some individuals, saying, “Why stand ye here all the day idle?” He was expressing His aversion for idleness. Therefore, whatever our hands find to do, we must do it with all our might before we find what we really desire to do (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

Let’s recognise that there are diverse opportunities around us; all we need is to take advantage of them and get to work. Remember, there is no future for the idle man. As it is written: The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat (Proverbs 13:4; see also Ecclesiastes 9:10).

For instance, the Bible records the story of Hagar and her son, Ishmael, who were about to die of thirst due to lack of water. However, when God heard her cry, the Bible says that: And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad to drink (Genesis 21:19). Revelation simple means spiritual not literal understanding of the truth. Accessing the mystery behind the story, just any anybody can understand the story as long as you are literate but not everybody can access the mystery or the revelation, it is the exclusive reserve of the redeemed of the Lord. And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables (Mark 4:11).

Thus, one must be born again because new birth is a non negotiable requirement for anyone to access the revelation of the truth. Are you born again? If you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, you can do so as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • How to respect your spouse, by Ojigiri

General Overseer of Ever Winning Faith Ministries Lagos, Rev Solomon Ojigiri has charged Christians to respect and honour their spouses.

He said advised singles not to marry someone that will be a source of grief to their biological or spiritual parents.

He spoke last week at the Singles and Couples seminar in his church to commemorate his birthday.

Ojigiri said: “We need to honor God as the subject of honor is one thing that can’t be over emphasized. People don’t know what it means to actually respect God, respect men of God, respect parents and respect spouses.”

He said Christians must honour their spouses because it is commanded by God.

“No matter the level of your education, experiences, affluence, wealth, exposure, you still need to honor your spouse,” he added.

Ojigiri said: “Honoring your spouse is honoring yourself. If you dishonor him/her, no one will do the honor; honor your spouse before others will.”

He also revealed the greatest problem of every marriage is ignorance and not lack of communication as most people believe.

Ojigiri said most people don’t go to seminars or schools before they get married and after marriage they still won’t go for seminars or read motivational books whereas there is need to get knowledge.

He advised men to provide for their wives, stating before anyone get married, a man should have steady job and be able to feed at least three people.

These people, he said, include “yourself, your wife and the one that will come nine months after. A man without a job is not ready for marriage.”

He encouraged them not to talk down on their wives as if they are maids.

  • Blame church for Nigeria’s woes, says cleric

The Senior Pastor of Word for Word Centre Lagos, Dr Bolaji Akinyemi, has attributed the nation’s woes to the failure of the church.

Nigeria, according to him, is down because churches have failed to deliver on their mandates.

He also blamed churches for the increasing loss of moral and spiritual values in the nation.

Akinyemi said: “The failure of the nation is the failure of the church because the church is expected to stand out in the system it finds itself.

“Nigeria is worn out today because the church has not measured up to its expressed mandate.”

He lamented most ministers in the nation were not operating in the supernatural, pointing out this is why they cannot rise about environmental hindrances.

Ministers, he said, must carry supernatural powers, otherwise they won’t be able to face the challenges of life.

He spoke last week at the ministers conference tagged 2017 Bible Speaks with the theme One from above.

The cleric said ministers should bring down the supernatural to bear in the current state of the nation.

According to him: “We should be able to bring down supernatural power of God to change the situation of things.

“You must be able to bring hope to hopeless situation; that is why we are called.

“Identity with the supernatural is having the life of God in you; if we do not have God to show to others then we have no business in ministry.

“We are meant to serve the pattern of heaven on earth and if people fail to see the pattern, then there is a problem.”

Also speaking at the conference, Church Growth expert, Dr Bola Akin-John, told the ministers to upgrade their leadership knowledge.

He also asked them to take good care of their marriages because ministry is marriage and vice versa.

According to him: “Ministry is not grown by anointing alone but by sound knowledge as it is a lifetime work.

“Therefore, a minister must keep learning, unlearn and re-learn, be open to ideas, innovative and must have strategic planning for the enablement of the church growth.”

He encouraged ministers not to let their ministries destroy their marriages or let their marriages destroy their ministries.

Ministry and marriage, according to him, are like Siamese twins such that any attempt to remove one will kill the other.

He advised ministers to settle their issues if they have one because it will reflect in their ministry if they don’t.

Akin-John said: “If your attitude to money is not right, you will miss it in ministry.

“God doesn’t condemn money or prosperity but God condemns wrong attitude to money, like stealing.”

He warned ministers to be careful with handling money so that they don’t worship it but put their trust in God.

“Don’t do ministry with politics or bitterness. In the cause of ministry, things will happen that will injure your heart.

“Don’t let it make you bitter because bitterness is like a poison that eats you up,” he added.

  • Respect Nigeria’s secularity, Uche tells FG

Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Uche, has charged the federal government to respect the secularity of the nation for sustainable peace.

He spoke at the maiden Synod of Methodist Church of Nigeria, Diocese of Ereko, last week in Lagos.

Uche said government should sit up and project itself as unbiased and impartial in dealing with Nigerians and faiths.

He said that when government respects secularity, issues like insecurity, ethnic and religious fanaticism will gradually vanish.

“We urge government not to fold her hands in the wake of attacks on Christianity but defend her citizens and also respect the secularity of the Nigerian state,” he stressed.

The Prelate advised that those found to be fanatical in Christianity and Islam should not be treated with kid’s gloves.

According to him: “We have observed those found to have beheaded Mrs. Agbahime in Kano were set free to the dismay of others.

“If properly handled, the case should have served as deterrence to others.

“All Methodists people believe Nigeria cannot be free from religious miscreants until our government faces the business of delivering of democracy to all, irrespective of tribes and religions.”

Bishop of Ereko Diocese, Rt. Rev Olakayode Adeogun, appealed to the government to provide adequate security for whistle blowers with their identities protected from evil doers.

Adeogun lamented the socio-economic challenges in the nation were self-inflicted, stating the level of corruption unravelled by the current administration was mind-boggling.

The cleric commended the whistle blowing policy to expose corruption, stating that it was working to great effects.

He called on Nigerians to support the anti-graft war, while urging government to fight the Fulani herdsmen menace.

  • ‘Suicide is a sin against God’

‘Suicide is a sin against God’

General Overseer of Love of Christ Chapel International Ministries, Prophet Peter Olowoporoku, speaks with Opeyemi Samuel and Segun Olabode on the rising suicidal cases and sundry national issues. Excerpts:

Your years ago, you were attacked. Tell us about it.

I am so privileged and blessed. I always run a national 40-day programme tagged Mercy rain. I usually wait on the Lord for 40 days. Then four years ago, we normally use a big hall at LTV for the 40-day programme. It was in that meeting that I was attacked. I was taken to many hospitals and it was like a death sentence for me but God said no. He stood up and raised men for me.

So God raised men for me in the place of prayers. They prayed for me and God healed me. I was about to be flown out of the country for treatment but God healed me here.

That was what made my 50th birthday a grand style last year. But this year made it 51 years of my life and 31years as a full-time pastor.

    How did you start ministry?

I got into the ministry at the age of 19 crossing to 20 as a full time. I left an insurance company called African Alliance Insurance Company in Ibadan. At 18, I was already working as an insurance man but God told me “you’re my servant. You’re a bearer of my vessel.”

So I came into the ministry at 20 and since then I’ve been in full time working for the Lord from continent to continent and God has been faithful.

How has it been in the ministry for 31 years?

God has been so good. Actually, there’s a book to that effect titled Mandate of Mercy. I met Daddy Adeboye 26 years ago at the national headquarters Ebute-Meta. I went to him because I was confused, disjointed and embarrassed when I left my former ministry. I was terribly hurt.

As a young man, I went to Daddy Adeboye to explain my predicament to him but he said I shouldn’t talk about the man but focus on myself. He said of a truth, he doesn’t want to hear about my story because he didn’t even know the man so he wasn’t ready to hear anything about anybody he didn’t know.

He said I should face my life. He said that God who didn’t allow me to die there or allow him to kill me has a purpose for me. And since that day, I forgot about him and focused on my God. That was 26 years ago. And he prayed for me in his office at Ebute-Meta.

As I was about to leave his office, I heard a voice from God saying “Purity is Power. If you want to carry my power you must be pure, and live a holy life.” And I said ‘Lord, I am ready.’ That was the beginning of a journey that is beyond me.

The kind of favour I have experienced in the last 31 years can only be God. It can only be the hands of God. And if God tells me that I have finished my work on earth today, I’ll celebrate Him forever.

Have you had any regret since you’ve been in the ministry?

I have never had a day of regret neither have I had cause to ask why I am doing what I’m doing now. I have only days of plus, celebrations and happiness.

We have about 20 branches in Lagos alone, South Africa and other African countries. As I tell people, Jesus is the owner of this church, not Olowoporoku.

What is your take on current economic situation and what is the hope for the people?

God is the owner of his people. God is the owner of Nigeria and He determines what happens per time. Nigeria is a great country. We have great people here, great thinkers.

Nigeria is one of the best countries in the world. Travel out of this country and you’d want to come back. I don’t know about anybody, but if I travel outside the country and I spend five days, I’m already thinking of how to come back home.

If God wanted me to be an American, I’d have been born there. But God, in His infinite mercy and master plan, has a purpose for me to be born in Nigeria.

If God wants us to divide, He knows how to do it without shedding a blood. You might call the amalgamation a mistake but it’s in God’s agenda; it’s never a mistake.

God has a purpose that President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are in power. God has a purpose for it. Our job as the people is to pray for leaders. The problem is that we criticise a lot. I love constructive criticisms, not just anyhow talk.

Something that has become bad will not be good in just a night. The extent of the damage that has been done will not be corrected in a day. It will take time. But the truth is let the current government have visions and plans for the masses and the less privileged.

Let them have vision for the jobless. Because the more there are jobless people, the more there would be crimes. Pastors are now at the receiving end because we are the one taking care of these people. We have become their burden bearers.

Why is corruption rising despite the many churches springing up daily?

The problem is from the leadership. Anything you want to correct must be from the altar. That’s why if you want to give your child the best it would be from home, not from school. The little time you spend with them and talk to them is better off than the hours they spend with their teachers in school.

They came from you, they are your blood. There’s a part of them that quickly identifies with your voice. If they come to church and we’re not telling them about how to live right and shun corruption and we keep telling them to bring money that you don’t even know the source, it means we’re also compromising. And that level, people will also go haywire in looking for money by any means.

People know me here that I don’t compromise because I want to make heaven. That is my goal. What I’m after is adding value to lives and making people happy.

What advice do you have for Nigerians?

I want to tell them to be patient and put their trust in God. They should pray for the leadership and believe in God that something positive will happen very soon. Let us depend on God to work through our leaders. They can’t do anything outside of God.

It is only God that can give them wisdom, power and enablement. Even if they are the best hands, if God does not work with them they can do nothing.

What’s your take on the recent suicide cases?

Anybody who takes his/her own life would not make it to heaven. It’s not right to take your life. You don’t create life, so you don’t take it. It is a sin against the divinity.

In a worst case scenario, you can just commit everything into God’s hands rather than committing suicide. Those people you’re seeing being celebrated today have passed through some difficult situations yesterday. But they kept going on; they refused to give up. Today, we’re using their stories as testimonials.

Another reason I’d say that causes suicide is overdependence on the leadership. People are too dependent on the government for change and once they don’t see what they expect they begin to have problems. For instance, if a woman is over dependent on her husband, the day the man has problems the woman can die. I have seen a woman who had stroke the day she discovered that her husband keeps girlfriends.

Suicide rate can best stopped when men start putting their trust and reliance in God. We’ve seen people in the bible who passed through difficult challenges and survived. Abraham passed through the period of recession with Isaac, Jacob and others.

The interesting thing is that God saw them through. You cannot get to the top without passing through difficult times but God’s promise is that “though you pass through the waters, I’ll be with you.”

My advice to those who want to commit suicide or planning such is that they should stop it. There’s light at the end of the tunnel. There’s no hopeless case; there’re only hopeless people. And why should you be hopeless while the light of God is still moving around?
