  • ‘How I refused bribes as a civil servant’

‘How I refused bribes as a civil servant’

Bishop Leonard Umunna is founder and General Overseer of the Bible Life Church, Apapa Lagos. He speaks with Omolara Akintoye on what it takes to be a servant of God, increasing rate of divorce and how to build healthy marriages. Excerpts:

What were you doing before you accepted the call to ministry?

Interestingly, I have been on the altar since age seven as a mass-servant in the Roman Catholic Church. I was to be enrolled in the seminary to take the seven priestly vows before I was converted into the Pentecostal movement, precisely Assemblies of God Church, at age nine.

I left the eastern part of the country for Lagos as a young boy after the civil war. I was engaged in so many things such as tailoring, hawking and serving as a helper to my uncle, among others.

While at my uncle’s shop, I would listen to NTA News and would be taking jottings. From this, I developed myself in stenography, which earned me my first job as a copy typist at the Nigeria National Supply Company (NNSC).

While at NNSC, I enrolled into many part-time studies, which helped me to gain promotion from the post of a copy typist steadily up the ladder until I became a manager in NNSC. I served in various capacities without warning, let alone query for thirteen and half years when the Lord asked me to resign and face the ministry work fully.

What are some of the challenges you faced and how were you able to tackle them?

The challenges were numerous. They emanated from family members, colleagues to clients (contractors mainly). It was mainly the challenge of corruption. That is why I tell people that corruption did not start today in Nigeria. My own uncle at a point in time advised me that “People do not wear government cap straight.”

There were instances that a particular contractor brought the key of a brand new Peugeot 504 just for me to award him contracts and I told him that my salary was enough for me. I added that scriptures taught me that the whole world put together does not equal my soul.

How I overcame was only through the word of God, which I have clung to from my youth giving me the grace to overcome all. People used to say that I was carrying government’s work on my head as if it was my father’s work and I would reply them: “Yes, it is because the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.”

What are the major problems facing servants of God in the society and how can they overcome such problems?

In those days, it was mainly persecution from family members and the society. Then, if you wanted to be a pastor, they saw you as someone who had lost it, especially being a Pentecostal preacher/pastor.

Today, the major problem is that of pressure to be like others; the problem of originality. A lot is being carried away because of financial needs and problem of popularity. To some, the family members find it difficult to differentiate between his office as a pastor and as a father, uncle or brother.

So many pastors out there cannot hear God correctly. If they hear Him, they miss it on application and timeliness and sometimes how to present God’s message. Many lack scriptural interpretation and application as a result. They become conservative and adamant to change.

God’s principles are the same but His methods differ from generation to generation. Next, they should be focused. Do the right thing consistently and hear God rightly or else such an individual will be pursuing shadows.

As I tell people, a truly called servant of God is greater than any nation’s president. I have a principle, “God’s work done God’s way never lacks God’s supply.” So, I avoid borrowing. I owe no man.

What is that day in your life you cannot easily forget?

I have never had a better yesterday. My yesterday was good, today is better and my tomorrow is best. Every day to me is special because my life is full of testimonies. Which one will I tell?

Is it the day I rose from half burial and by God’s providence walked through music? Or the day I went to mock brethren in the Pentecostal church (Assemblies of God) that they used to cry and I ended up crying because God arrested me? Is it the day I received the Holy Ghost Baptism or in hell when I promised God to see me as the last key and pass any message or assignment no servant of God is ready to undertake to me because I was refusing the call to serve in the Pentecostal way?

They are too numerous. When God turned me into a pillar on the altar when hired assassins came and searched for me for hours pointing torch lights on me but could not see me.

How did you meet your wife and how long have you been married?

I never wanted to marry but God virtually forced me to, telling me that to do His work and get to where He is taking me to, I need a wife. He directed me to where to go. I was inside the vehicle going when He flashed the face of a lady to me and I prayerfully rebuked that vision because I never had a girlfriend, never fornicated, never drank alcohol nor smoked cigarette.

I married as a virgin. Well, it happened that when I arrived, the person I was led to was the same face I saw in the vision. I married her and lived with her for 35 years without laying hands on her any day before God called her home.

What does it take to have a successful marriage?

It takes God to have a successful marriage. It takes understanding of the purpose of God for marriage and understanding of your partner; it takes humility, respect and love.

The woman must respect the husband because he needs it and the man must love the wife and show it because she needs it. Also, have the ability to forgive in advance, to give and to keep giving.

To have a successful marriage, the man should do what Jesus did for the church – He died for the church and the woman must do what the church does for Jesus – submit to Him in everything.

What do you think are the major causes of divorce and how can it be avoided?

Incompatibility, finance, especially when the man lacks the financial capacity to play his roles of providing for the family. Lack of fruit of the womb, lack of submissiveness, taking undue authority; insecurity on the part of the woman and when the man’s ego is violated. Third-party influence and when God is voted out of the marriage through broken family altar, which could arise due to offences and bitterness of heart.

Know your duty or role and play it well. Don’t have the mind of what to gain from the relationship but what to give to it to make it work.

  • Xenophobia: Pastor donates $7,000 to Nigerian victims

Xenophobia: Pastor donates $7,000 to Nigerian victims

General Overseer of Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministries AKA Liberation City, Dr Chris Okafor, has donated cash worth $7,000 to at least 20 Nigerians affected by the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

He made the donation recently in Polokwane with the Minister Consular & Immigration Anthony A. Ogbe, in attendance.

Okafor, who prayed with the victims and sympathasised with the plights, said the donation was to offer them succor as they recover from varying degrees of injuries sustained during the attacks.

Completely overwhelmed with grief by the horrific encounters of the victims, he said: “I never knew it was this bad.

“Nobody should have to go through this level of horror. We are brothers and should not do this to ourselves. If blacks are killing blacks, how can we then convince the world that ‘Black Lives Matter’?”

The cleric ran into the plights of Nigerians when he paid a courtesy call on the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg after a mega crusade on April 8.

He received important briefings on the much- talked about xenophobic attacks on Nigerians during the call from  the Consul General, Mr. Godwin Adama and Ogbe, who had just returned from a visit to Polokwane.

Polokwane is a city in the Limpopo province, about three hours drive from Johannesburg.

A Nigerian had just been killed and many others critically injured in a xenophobic attack only days before.

Okafor offered prayers for peace and indicated willingness to visit the troubled region to demonstrate solidarity and help fellow Nigerians.

A week later, according to a statement from the church last week, Okafor returned armed with relief materials and cash for the victims.

They met at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) building.

Peter Idowu Kolawole almost lost his right leg to the attack, sustaining deep machete cuts on his head.

He struggled to walk with crutches during the meeting.

Kayode Showunmi, a fashion designer, had arrived South Africa only a week before for the first time to visit his brother, Razak Ajao.

He escaped death with machete cuts all over his body and almost had his manhood cut off. The attackers also burned his international passport.

Ajao was however not so lucky. He was murdered in cold blood, leaving behind a young widow, Basirat and four children.

Raphael Nwachukwu, like most Nigerians in the region, was no longer sleeping in his home.

He slept wherever he felt safe around the city. He was spotted out in his new hiding place and given the beating of his life with two massive machete cuts to his head, a swollen arm and cuts to his stomach.

The attackers took away his car and all belongings in it.

Wale Adewara, a science teacher, was also mercilessly attacked with his wife.

A South African who played the Good Samaritan tried to stop the attackers from killing Peter Idowu.

But he was beaten with his right arm dislocated for protecting a Nigerian.

The community exploded with joy as, according to them, no one has ever done anything that close for them since they’ve been crying out for help.

It was a brief moment of huge relief from so much pain. They thanked the man of God and prayed God’s blessings on him and his ministry.

  • ‘Church leaders need prayers, counsel’

Christian leaders need the prayers and godly counsel of members, General Overseer of Christ Word Gospel Church, Pastor Moses Olanrewaju-Bankole, has stated.

He urged Christians to continue to support their leaders with their prayers and godly counsel.

Olarenwaju-Bankole, who spoke with our correspondent recently, said the battle against the church is fierce, requiring Christians supporting their generals.

He said the church will win with godliness and righteousness.

He lamented the wide condemnation of church leaders by Christians in the open, which, according to him, will keep the wounded generals down for enemies to prevail over them.

He noted that Christians of today are not mature.

“When their soldiers get wounded, they kill their soldiers the more.

“Any little rumour about any church leader, Christians are the ones promoting it more even on social media networks.

‘’The more the soldiers are getting more wounded on daily basis, who will now do the work and lead the good fight of faith?”

He added Nigeria will not be a place to live in if not for these men of God who have continued to preach peace, love and togetherness.

The cleric asserted that church leaders are mortals and need rebuke when they err, stating, “we should stand and remain with them until they recover.”

He commended efforts of God’s generals who have continued to draw the hands of God with their prayers and urged them to continue until Nigeria takes its pride of place among the comity of nation.

  • Praising God drowns problems, negativities – Korode

The General Leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church (Ayo Ni O) Surulere district headquarters, Prophet Sunday Korode, has declared that praise and worship songs drown the power of problems, vexations and all negative life’s experiences.

He stated this while answering questions from reporters at the 2017 Choir Day of the church.

The event also marked the 44th anniversary of the choir, The Seraph Voices, penultimate Saturday.

The theme of the choir Day was, ‘YESOBEB, He restores my soul’.

The event featured drama and music presentations from different choir groups in the church and other branches of Cherubim and Seraphim.

Korode said there was no better time to sing praises to God than now when Nigerians are going through difficulties and hardships.

Praising God, he said, will bury all their sadness and make life a lot more meaningful for them.

“I think there is no other time that is better than now to raise the praise song to high level to dwarf the sadness of our collective experience as stated in James 5:13 to the end.

“That is, if anybody happy let him sing and if they are sad let them get into prayers and if they are sick let the elders be called upon to pray for such persons.

“One of the greatest powers of praising the Lord and songs is that of healing the wound that you have either internally or externally in the soul and spirit.

“You find out that when the children of Israel were in captivity, that’s when the song by the rivers of Babylon, a very interesting song over the years, came.

“You find out that they were walking and weeping but they were still singing praises.

“And Psalm 42:6 says though I am bored and cowed at the level of the heart and soul, I will still praise him,” the General Leader said.

According to him: “When you listen to the lyrics in the songs, they tell of the healings that are for all sicknesses.

“They tell of the victory that goes over all wars. They tell of the joy that drowns all sadness.

“So there is no better time to sing the songs of praise. The walls of Jericho came down at the sound of the trumpet and the Halleluyah chorus of the people of Israel.

“So this is the right time to bring down the walls of Jericho in our lives,” he said.

Prophet Korode also called on the federal government to “log on to what is good and keep on doing what is right to correct the nation and bring it back to balance to ensure that we recover from recession and we get into progression.”

  • Economic hardship worries Methodist bishop

The Bishop of Owo Diocese, Methodist Church Nigeria, Rev Solomon Adegbite, has lamented the current economic recession driving many Nigerians to the point of attempted suicide.

He noted that the current situation was not unconnected with the unruly activities of people and evil government officials.

Delivering his address at the 29th Diocesan Synod at Methodist Church Nigeria, Epinmi-Akoko, the Bishop insisted that until people stop discriminating against God and persecuting innocent people, especially Christians, the situation may not improve.

Adegbite urged President Muhammadu Buhari and government officials to steer clear of religious matters by not imposing any religion over the other.

On the incessant attacks by suspected herdsmen, the cleric flayed the killings and destruction of farmland in many parts of the country, urging the federal government to curtail marauding herdsmen.

The Bishop expressed the need for the government to engage transparent technocrats to manage the economy of the country for solutions to the hardship of pauperised Nigerians.

Besides, he advocated for egalitarian society, stressing that public offices should be shared equally among various tribes in the country.

The cleric believes the violence in the Niger Delta region could be tackled if the federal government pays attention to the welfare of its inhabitants as the hen that lays the egg through which the country is being sustained.

He called for an end to religious killings which he described as sinful, stressing that the inability of the government to curtail the act may lead to anarchy.

  • Engaging the covenant of kingdom stewardship!

Christianity is a covenant based faith and we serve a covenant-keeping God, Who said: My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips (Psalm 89:34). In Deuteronomy 28:1-12, we have a list of blessings that accrue to every redeemed child of God; however, there is what to do to take delivery of them. The Bible helps us to understand that when we serve God, we commit Him to bless us and when He blesses, it cannot be reversed. In other words, if we do what God commands, we will provoke His blessings and Kingdom stewardship (serving God) is one of His commandments (Exodus 23:25-26).

Kingdom stewardship is one of our covenant responsibilities to access divine blessings, favour and rewards. It is God’s wisdom for connecting the redeemed to their rewards.

    What is Kingdom Stewardship?

It is serving the interests of the Kingdom in all its ramifications. It is a commitment to the growth, expansion, enlargement and overall advancement of God’s Kingdom. Kingdom Stewardship can be classified into three categories:

    • Spiritual Stewardship: This is the most important. It has to do with the ingathering and establishment of souls in the Kingdom. The Bible says: In the multitude of people is the king’s honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince (Proverbs 14:28).

The Church is ordained for continuous and endless growth. When we are committed to building the Church, we are engaging in spiritual stewardship which is superior to every other kind of stewardship.

    • Physical Stewardship: This is our physical engagement in diverse service groups, through our skills and services offered for the advancement of the Kingdom of God.
    • Financial Stewardship: This is investing our finances towards the promotion and advancement of the Kingdom, as “engraced” by God.

Of all these forms of stewardship, spiritual stewardship is the most rewarding. Remember, physical engagement profits little, but spiritual engagement is profitable unto all things, having the promise of the life which now is and of that which is to come (1 Timothy 4:8). There is profit from all other areas (physical and financial stewardship), but the most enduring and explosive rewards come through spiritual stewardship. By spiritual stewardship, I mean soul-winning which is the most profitable investment in the Kingdom. This is because when we engage in soul-winning, we are trading spiritual stocks and the returns cover all areas of our lives. However, it is important to know that our engagement in soul-winning must culminate in reaping before we are qualified to receive the blessings. Therefore, our satisfaction should not be in the fact that we went in search for souls, but that we succeeded in bringing and establishing them (John 4:35-36).

It is also worthy of note that all the watchmen and intercessors are also beautified along with the soul-winners. This is because it takes a combination of standing strong in prayers and preaching the good tidings, to see people saved and established. Thus, we are either on the go preaching, on our knees praying or both; but to belong to none, makes one a complacent Christian. This is because, prayer is a mighty weapon in reaping harvest of souls and seeing them established (Isaiah 66:7-8; Isaiah 62:10-12).

    WONDER REWARDS IN SPIRITUAL STEWARDSHIP

    • Supernatural Breakthrough: We saw a graphic picture in the case of Peter with his net-breaking and boat-sinking dimension of breakthrough after Jesus used Peter’s boat for evangelism. This dimension of breakthroughs is what we call supernatural breakthroughs (Luke 5:1-8; Psalm 22:30; Proverbs 10:22). This helps us to understand that when we partner with God in soul-winning, we are entitled to strange dimension of breakthroughs, and also share in His honour (John 12:26).
    • Speedy Rewards: The day Peter allowed his boat to be used in ministering to the needs of the people, to set the captives free and to bring souls into the Kingdom was the same day he received his mysterious returns (Luke 5:4-7). Furthermore, the Bible makes us to understand that every soul-winner is a fisherman and as such, every time a fish is caught, the commission is paid instantly, because every fish (soul) has a coin in its mouth (Matthew 17:26-27; Revelation 22:12).
    • Divine Health: It is written: Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:20). We are called ambassadors of Christ because we engage in reconciling the world with God and as such, we are entitled to divine health in return (Proverbs 13:17; John 15: 2).
    • Peace: Spiritual stewardship keeps us restfully asleep in the midst of the storm, like Jesus in Mark 4:38-41 (See also Exodus 14: 13-14; Psalm 46:10; Philippians 4:7).
    • It Breaks Generational Curses: Kingdom stewardship is a platform for breaking generational curses. This is because it entitles us to God’s blessings, and His blessing is the cure for all forms of curses: generational, hereditary, satanic, and occultic curses (Numbers 23:7-8; Exodus 23:25-26). Therefore, as you engage in soul-wining, I see God breaking every curse ravaging your life in the name of Jesus Christ!

However, before you can engage in soul-winning successfully, you must first be born again. Are you born again? If you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, you can do so as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • THE FULL ARMOUR OF GOD (8)

Sub-Theme: The Strong Belt of Truth

    Topic: The word of Truth

God chose Joshua to be the next leader of Israel after Moses, to him was given the overwhelming task of leading the Israelites to possess their promised inheritance. Joshua knew Moses’ shoes were too big for him to fill. Someone who understands what leadership entails will not be quick to throw a party and celebrate when chosen to be a leader in whatsoever capacity. Leadership positions call for sober reflection; it is huge and never to be taken lightly because everything has to be done according to God’s pattern. Joshua understood this truth, he desired to be a leader after God’s own heart who would lead and succeed God’s way. The task ahead of him was enormous and challenging; there were strong nations to be defeated, he would need the acceptance and cooperation of the people he is to lead, and for God to be with him as He was with Moses.

Joshua waited to hear from God before embarking on his assignment. God told him to ARISE! from his fear and despair and get set for the work, He then gave him his job description and told him how he will prosper and have good success as the next leader of Israel. God said to him:

    • “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to ALL that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then have good success”

Joshua will have to study and know the word of God (the book of the law). He will meditate on it day and night so it will become part of him; he has to live by the word of God; in total obedience to do what God tells him to do and He will teach it to the people. Then and only then would Joshua be sure of God’s presence, prosperity and good success during his reign. God’s word will also build his faith, dispel his fear, and make him strong and courageous.

Note that before Joshua embarked on his task, he waited to get instructions from the God who made him a leader; he did not trust in his own understanding.  He is to commune daily with God to get full direction on how to carry out each task and obey Him fully in order to experience good success.

There is good and bad success. Good success is God’s success; you get it through godly means. God gives good success when you chose to honour/obey Him in all your ways. Good success does not have expiry date; it is everlasting, it will lead you to heaven at last, while Bad success is the success acquired through ungodly means. It is the success attained without honouring God in one’s actions. Many call on God with their mouths but do not live as God wants them to; they do not obey God, they do not do the right things God wants them to do to succeed. Bad success has an expiry date and it will lead one to hell fire someday. Let us be warned!

The fortified Jericho was the first city they destroyed, except for Rehab and her family who were saved because she believed in the God of Israel and His word.

God gave Joshua an unconventional strategy to defeat Jericho. Jericho was a fortified city with a double stone wall of about 12-15 feet high and 14 feet wide. It was virtually unconquerable. God instructed Joshua to march around the city with his army once daily for 6 days with seven priests walking ahead of the Ark of God’s Covenant, each carrying trumpet made from ram’s horn. On the seventh day they were to walk around the city 7 times and the priests shall blow the trumpets. When the priests give a long, loud blast, all the people were to give a mighty shout and the wall of the city will fall down. To most people this strategy will sound foolish and unreasonable but this was a test of Joshua’s full obedience to God’s word. Joshua summoned the people and gave them the instructions, they followed God’s instructions, and wall of Jericho fell down flat. Jericho was defeated.

The next city to be conquered is Ai, a small city. They confidently went into battle against Ai with few soldiers but they were soundly defeated by small Ai, they fled from them and 36 Israeli soldiers were killed. Why the defeat? God’s command to destroy everything in Jericho except that, which was reserved for the Lord’s treasury, was disobeyed. For Achan took some loot for himself and this brought trouble for Israel.

Joshua cried out to God and God spoke to him, saying, “Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have taken some of the accursed things and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. Therefore, the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.”

It was when Israel destroyed the accursed in their midst they experienced peace and victory again. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, enemies will defeat someone who will not fully obey God.

If you truly want to win battles, prosper, and have good success, then you have to study God’s word (The Bible) daily to know Him and His ways, to know how He wants you to live, so you can fully obey Him. By so doing, our nation too will prosper and have good success.

    TEXT: Ephesians 6:10-18, John 8:32, Joshua 1:8, 6-8, Hebrews 4:12, Psalm 119, Psalm 119:11

  • Why Nigeria is down, by cleric

The Minister-in-Charge of Motailatu Church of God, Oke-Ira Lagos, Rev Dr James Akinadewo, has blamed bad leadership for the nation’s woes.

Nigeria, according to him, has been pegged down despite enormous human and natural resources by bad leaders and docile followers.

Akinadewo, in a statement, lamented that the situation has driven the nation to the precipice, insisting something drastic must be done to reverse the trend.

He said: “With the mineral, material and human resources endowed Nigeria by God and the resultant biting hardship faced daily by the populace, Nigeria is a huge disappointment.

“We have disappointed God as a nation and a big letdown to humanity.

Recent discovery shows our leaders are inhuman with no welfare for the populace.

“Countries less endowed are enjoying but we are suffering in the midst of plenty owing to bad leadership.”

He also lamented the choking level of corruption across the nation, saying “if we don’t rise, posterity will have our heads on a platter.”

Pointing out Nigerians have become despondent, Akinadewo said the responsibility to provide basic amenities lies with government and not God.

“Nigerians daily blackmail God with prayers for amenities. It is government’s duty, not God’s,” he stressed.

He described unemployment as a time bomb and youth restiveness as a sticking sore, arguing that something must give way to save the nation.
