  • Cleric makes case for youth employment

The wife of the President of Agape Christian Ministries, International, Rev. (Mrs.) Funke Felix- Adejumo, has challenged the federal government and Organised Private Sector to come up with robust and sustainable plans for massive youth employment.

She said the nation has to provide job opportunities for its teeming youthful population or risk damaging socio-economic implosions.

Felix-Adejumo spoke with our correspondent at the sidelines of the Forward Drive Summit by Move Your World International in Muson Centre, Lagos, recently.

She said government and the OPS must form a synergy to address the frighteningly increasing youth unemployment to save the nation from a shutdown.

The leading conference speaker pointed out that many unemployed youths in the nation were at the verge of utter frustration and could turn against the state.

Nigerian youths, according to her, have potential and skills to survive and lift the nation if given the chance based on growing evidence.

She lamented that many leaders in the public and private sectors are sit-tight, making it impossible for youths to take over.

Felix-Adejumo added: “It is disturbing that the people who were in positions of authority 30 years ago are still in the corridors of power, leaving no chance for vibrant, enterprising, diligent and skilful youths to make their mark.

“We need to begin to engage youths and give them a chance across public and private sectors and if they make mistakes, we can correct them in love as a good father would do to his children.”

She advised youths to desist from restiveness, kidnapping and other social upheavals.

According to her: “Nigeria belongs to youths who can dream big and walk with God in honesty, uprightness and patience.”

She applauded the ongoing anti-corruption war, pointing out that the level of corruption in the country is mind-boggling.

She, however, said the war must be holistic and not selective.

  • Ministers need constant training, retraining

The Senior Pastor of First Love Assembly Port-Harcourt, Pastor Simeon Afolabi, has stressed the need for proper training, moulding and retraining of gospel ministers.

He also made a case for stricter regulation of gospel preachers to stem the tide of abuses and erosion of biblical values among Christians.

Afolabi stated these in a chat with reporters last week in Lagos ahead of a ministers’ conference/restoration seminar organised by Revival Promotion Partners, an interdenominational group of eminent Christians across the nation.

The conference is billed for November 19 at The Jevinik Place, 21 Isaac John Street, GRA, Ikeja with the theme “walking in glory.”

Lamenting the grave anomalies among ministers, Afolabi attributed it largely to lack of proper training and close monitoring.

“The easiest thing to do these days is to start a church. Once you can speak well, you can open shop and start a church.

“Most of the people in ministry these days are either not called or have derailed from the calling.

“Those who derailed are mainly due to improper training. Training is important for proper grounding and equipment,” he explained.

Afolabi said it was regrettable that the entry point for ministers remains unregulated and porous.

According to him, nobody becomes a doctor without at least seven-year of rigorous training and constant evaluation.

“But in the ministry, it is an all-comers affair. Nobody checks up on your beliefs, doctrines and practices.

“Everyone wants to do his own thing, claiming to have heard directly from God,” he regretted.

He said if doctors that deal with bodies go through such rigour before practice, then pastors who handle souls that never die should be subjected to more scrutiny.

Afolabi called for an independent, interdenominational body to regulate the activities of ministers and churches.

This, he said, will checkmate sharp practices and serve as caution to ministerial abuses.

The conference, he said, will consider what ministers need to do to remain relevant and focused on the things of the kingdom.

  • RCCG parish inaugurates road, water projects at 20

The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Winners’ Centre, Ketu, Lagos has inaugurated a 25-metre road and borehole water project to commemorate its 20th anniversary.

Declaring the projects open last Sunday, the pastor-in-charge, Lagos Province 36, Pastor Tunde Netufo, said: “We do believe that government alone cannot solve all infrastructural problems.

“So, at some point, corporate organisations will have to come to the rescue. Notwithstanding that the Redeemed Christian Church of God is a church and therefore a charitable organisation, we decided to take the bull by the horns by doing these projects for the community.”

Netufo encouraged other churches and charitable organisations to follow the example of the RCCG.

He commended Winners’ Centre for its choice of projects, which he described as strategic.

According to him: “One of the major causes of fatality on our roads is bad roads.

“Bad roads also reduce the lifespan of vehicles. Bad roads cause motorists and commuters a lot of pains and discomfort.

“Therefore, good roads reduce accidents and help to save lives. Good roads reduce the wear-and-tear on vehicles and help us to save money.

“Good roads also make movement from one location to another faster and pleasurable.”

On the water project, he said: “Water is life. We drink water. We use water to wash and we bathe with water. We cannot do without water on a daily basis.”

The area pastor and host, Pastor Demola Salami, revealed that the untold suffering of their host community propelled the desire to embark on the two projects for the benefit of all.

Describing completion of the projects as a dream come true, he said the inauguration could not have come at a more auspicious occasion than the 20th anniversary of the parish.

A community leader, Mrs. Sherifat Rabiu, recalled the hitherto untold suffering of residents.

She expressed joy the two projects have brought great relief to the community.

  • Follow in his steps (5)

Light has come into the world but men love darkness and refuse to follow the light, of the course because their deeds are evil, and they don’t want them exposed neither do they want to stop their evil acts. The Light (Jesus) exposes darkness (Satan and his evil works) and He totally transforms anyone willing to follow fully.

Saul was a man who was involved in the unfruitful works of darkness; he persecuted Christians, saw to their deaths- he consented to the killing of Stephen, a follower of Jesus who at the point of death prayed for his killers, that God should hold them guiltless of their sin, this Saul made havoc of the followers of Jesus in order to stop the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ but rather than stop the gospel, the persecution helped spread it wider because it is the word of God and no one can stop God.

Eventually, Saul the persecutor became one of those whom God used to further spread the gospel, he devoted his life even unto death to preaching and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Also known as Apostle Paul.

SAUL thus narrated his conversion testimony before King Agrippa:

“I used to believe that I ought to do many horrible things to the followers of Jesus of Nazareth. I imprisoned many of the saints in Jerusalem, as authorized by the High Priests; and when they were condemned to death, I cast my vote against them. I used torture to try to make Christians everywhere curse Christ. I was so violently opposed to them that I even hounded them in distant cities in foreign lands.

“I was on such a mission to Damascus, armed with the authority and commission of the chief priests, when one day about noon, sir, a light from heaven brighter than the sun shone down on me and my companions. We all fell down, and I heard a voice speaking to me in Hebrew, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? You are only hurting yourself.’

“‘Who are you, sir?’ I asked.

“And the Lord replied, ‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting.  Now stand up! For I have appeared to you to appoint you as my servant and my witness. You are to tell the world about this experience and about the many other occasions when I shall appear to you.  And I will protect you from both your own people and the Gentiles. Yes, I am going to send you to the Gentiles to open their eyes to their true condition so that they may repent and live in the light of God instead of in Satan’s darkness, so that they may receive forgiveness for their sins and God’s inheritance along with all people everywhere whose sins are cleansed away, who are set apart by faith in me.’

“And so, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to that vision from heaven!  I preached first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and through Judea, and also to the Gentiles that all must forsake their sins and turn to God—and prove their repentance by doing good deeds. The Jews arrested me in the Temple for preaching this and tried to kill me, but God protected me so that I am still alive today to tell these facts to everyone, both great and small. I teach nothing except what the Prophets and Moses said— that the Messiah would suffer and be the First to rise from the dead, to bring light to Jews and Gentiles alike.”

What a wonderful testimony of conversion from darkness to light. Saul’s transformation was so obvious that some who knew his former lifestyle glorified God for this new man. The lifestyle of light can never be hidden, just as light can’t be hidden.

For those who confess to be Christians, is your lifestyle truly like that of Christ?  Is your life bringing glory to God?

The lifestyles of darkness are evident: Adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lying, unforgiving, terrorism, persecution of followers of Jesus, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, Jealousy, Outburst of wrath (anger), selfish ambition, cheating, quarrelsome, heresies, envy, murder, drunkenness, wickedness, pride, wild parties, etc.

These lifestyles will not exalt anyone nor any nation but bring shame and backwardness. And the Lord said all those who live like these will not inherit heaven.

Believe and follow Jesus the Light, so your life will bring glory to God and to our nation Nigeria.

  • ‘Recession should never affect churches’

    ‘Recession should never affect churches’

General Overseer of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries (GOMERM) Lagos, Dr James Akanbi, worked for 17 years as Finance and Administration Manager in a multi-national firm.
He spoke with Sunday Oguntola on the economic recession and how churches can cope.

How is the recession affecting churches in terms of income generation?

There is one thing I’ve been saying and convinced about: there is no individual that can finance the church. Only God can finance it and I know one thing about God. He will always finance Himself no matter how tight.

Finances are shrinking for sure. But as it is shrinking in one way, God is looking for another way to take care of His church. If your purpose is God’s purpose, God will finance you.

In our church, people have asked me how we have been able to finance over 70 branches worldwide. They ask if the money is coming from those at the headquarters. I do say no because there is no branch that we collect offering from at the headquarters; we don’t do that.

Why is that? What administrative structure do you have in place?

I allow them to use their funds to grow their branches and that is what we do up till now.

You mean they don’t remit any percentage?

No remittance of any percentage at all. The 75 branches we have are not remitting a dime. Rather we send money. We pay salaries of workers and their rents from the headquarters.

People will wonder how they will remain loyal to you and know they are under the headquarters with that kind of structure?

Yes they know they belong to the headquarters. For example, on a monthly basis, all their pastors are here. On a monthly basis, there is a combined miracle service for all of us in Lagos and I go to all the zones.

People say that remittance is a way of always avoiding breakaways and serve as their own tithe

Has that stopped some of those churches breaking away from the headquarters? It has not stopped anything.

So, branches out the country also don’t remit?

In the United Kingdom, they take care of themselves. But others like Gambia, Senegal and Republic of Benin we do everything from here.

So, the recession does not affect operations?

In the last five or six months, we’ve been able to start about ten branches. If we are talking about starting a branch, some of the branches will take more than a million to start.

When we were starting the Ajah/Lekki, it gulped hundreds of thousands. So, I believe if it is God’s vision, He will make provisions for it. If it is purpose, He will handle it. I’m not going to stretch my hands into what He is not doing and when He is stretching my hands into it, then He must be able to empower my hands to be able to get something.

I agree the economy shrinks one way or the other but divine provision will not shrink. Offering to the church might shrink but divine provision will not shrink. He will raise it from whichever angle definitely. Our impact in the lives of people should still continue the recession notwithstanding.

How many more month do we have to get over this recession?

By the special grace of God and prayers of everyone with willingness from everyone, I think in the next 12months we should be able to get out.

Can Nigerians survive another 12 months of recession?

The tenacity is there and Nigerians know they can survive. What some family have been surviving is worse than what we are experiencing now.

It is the government that should look at themselves and feel they have failed the people. And it is just this government but successive administrations.

Your church has ventured into agriculture. Why is this?

It is a mechanism to beat the hard times. We are at one site around Osun state trying some few acres we are looking at. We have at two places, one at Igbo-Elerin.

We are into planting of yam, cassava, corn and all kind of things. For now, it is maize, yam and cassava. That’s for the one at Mugo. Our pastors go there weekends to supervise those that work there.

Some people argue churches should not have anything to do with businesses. They say the only business of the church is soul winning. Where do you stand?

Perfectly I agree that we must not miss our core mission but we should understand that church is a place of diversified talents. People are gifted in different things. While the headship and leadership is focused on our core mission, there are people that can actually take of other interests of the church.

In the early church, some people concentrated on the word, prayer and fellowship. But there were those in charge of the business aspect of the church. They were feeding the people. They got things from people and distributed to others.

They had managers and administrators as well as apostles. For example, I have not been to the farms and do not lose any sleep on it. There are people gifted in that. Members of the church could have degrees in agriculture-related courses.

For goodness sake, what are they doing sitting down? Let them go and be farm managers. They should take care of that. However, I do not agree the church should be in serious business that will crush its core mission.

Do you mean focus as in being on full time?

It is hard to have a blanket rule on that. I didn’t start as full time general overseer. I was still Finance and Administration manager for some time until God asked me to quit. So, if I say others should be full time, what about when I was part-time?

It depends on what God tells individuals but what I found that is when I came in as full time, it makes the work move a little bit faster. Where I worked, the company agreed I should work for only two days in a week. I spent three days in the church office.

But God still said I should give it up. So, for me, the final decision lies with God. Size of the ministry is another factor. With 75 branches and over eight independent ministries under my supervision, there is no way I would have coped without being on full-time.

What is your typical day like?

I don’t resume in the church office every day. I come here Tuesdays and Thursdays. I work from home where I have a huge library. I have written over 29 books. To be here, there is no way I won’t have some distractions.

I do a lot of online works, e-mailing and stuff with many of the branches from home. I do a lot of readings and also have a private time with God. My typical day runs from 8am.  Even when I’m at home, I’m always in the library.

Most people know that you come in 8:15am they meet me in the library, officially I close around 7pm.

Did you put in that much when you were in the corporate world?

In the corporate world, I didn’t spend that much time. I put in my best no doubt.  Sometimes I stayed in the office till 1pm but not every day. By 5pm, I’m off to home.

I had about one and the half break time but I don’t have break time here. I only have a flask by my side, take a cup of tea and move on.

There is pastoring and leadership. If it is to pastor a church of 200 people, you can say you don’t have much to do but when you find yourself in multi-dimensional, multi-disciplinary leadership, you have to pray because the job is something else.

You need the presence of God because the moment it is gone, you are out of the ministry. You have a lot of things that actually have to go into it.

I usually tell my people that you can’t be stronger than your routine. If your routine is weak then your life in ministry will be weak.

    Has your secular background helped?

Yes it helps a lot. If you do not have that background, there will be a particular aspect of management that will be missing. It could be budgeting or control of deviations.

Every year, I have a particular budget on my own and I’m controlling deviations. I’m looking at things that can bring in some contingency, do contingency planning and that helps with financing.

We have a lot of courses on finance that also can be applicable to leadership. My background has been helpful enough. I have been able to structure a system, have organ gram and put people into functional units.

I was in Harvard a few weeks ago to learn more on leadership and management.

A church leader in a Harvard class? Do you need such business training?

There is no born again way of cooking a yam. You have to place it on a stove. If you are managing people, you have to learn how to handle them. You manage people in corporate world, you manage people in the church and there is management aspect of the church. There is a leadership aspect of the church.

Management is different from leadership. In leading and managing people, you need knowledge. There is no ‘thus says thy Lord’ in managing systems. That is where confusion comes and people wreck churches.

If you are confusing the whole thing together you go nowhere, so we have to understand management of systems and leadership of people. They are two different things.

  • Catching a vision of God’s plan for your life! (2)

Last week, we began this two-part series with the understanding that every child of God has a glorious, enviable, royal, prosperous and mountain-top destiny in Christ Jesus. We also learnt that God’s plan for our lives is locked up in the Bible. All we need is to engage the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the power of the Blood of Jesus for continuous access. Furthermore, we discovered that one of the scriptural pictures of our destiny in redemption is to walk in dominion over any life situation and circumstance. This week, we shall conclude this teaching by exploring more scriptural pictures of our Destiny in redemption, which are as follows:

    1. We are redeemed as priests and kings to reign on the earth: The Bible says: And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth (Revelation 5:9-10).

Every child of God has a royal destiny in redemption; however, it is by wisdom that kings reign. For instance, the Bible records that all the kings on the earth in the days of Solomon gathered to listen to his wisdom (1 Kings 4:34; Proverbs 8:15-16).

It is important to note that wisdom in the Kingdom is the application of the Word of God. As it is written: Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock (Matthew 7:24-25).

Thus, wisdom is putting God’s Word to work as a lifestyle. Our royal destiny will never be realised except we put God’s Word to work in our lives. It is walking in the light of scriptures that empower the believer for enthronement. Therefore, our destiny is absolutely at the mercy of our obedience to the instructions of scriptures (Deuteronomy 28:1; Psalms 27:8-9, 119:98; Isaiah 60:1-3).

    1. We have been redeemed as stars to shine on the earth: We have been redeemed to so shine in this dark world so that people can glorify our Father in heaven. Jesus said: I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star (Revelation 22:16).

He also said: …As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you (John 20:21). Based on the above scriptures, everyone who is born again is redeemed a star after the order of Christ.

But, what does it take to shine?

And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever (Daniel 12:3).

Our shining demands that we engage in turning many to righteousness (soul-winning). No wonder the Bible says, he that winneth souls is wise. Supernatural wisdom is one of the key benefits of genuine engagement in Kingdom advancement, which includes engaging in Kingdom-focused prayers and reaching out to the lost with passion and love (soul-winning). This culminates in the making of stars. That means to emerge as stars, we must engage in tireless commitment, devotion and addiction to soul-winning (Proverbs 11:30; Ecclesiastes 8:1).

It is important to understand that soul-winning is not a gift or a calling; it is an instruction for everyone who is redeemed (John 15:16).

When we are ‘on the go’ in evangelism for Christ, we have committed Him to establish partnership with us, thereby making us more than conquerors. Remember the Bible says: He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20; see also Matthew 28:20; Mark 16:15-20).

When we are walking with Christ, Who is the wisdom and the power of God,   we become supernaturally smarter than the circumstances of life. This launches us into the struggle-free realm of life and our dominion is unquestionable. That is, things others struggle with become a walkover for us as a result of our partnership with God (Psalms 114:1-3).

It is impossible to find a star in the Kingdom without passion for souls. Kingdom stars are soul hunters. As we all know, all sports stars are seasonal stars; as soon as the record is made, it is laid aside and forgotten. However, God-made stars don’t go down; for whatsoever the Lord doeth shall be forever (Proverbs 11:30; Ecclesiastes 3:14).

In conclusion, we must recognise that every destiny in the Kingdom is at the mercy of obedience. The pictures of our redemptive heritage are real but we must take responsibility by engaging the Word, to make them a reality. It is not enough to catch God’s vision for our lives from the Word, it is important to know what to do to realise it. Often times, the picture fails because we do not respond to what is required to make them manifest.

Our future places specific demands on our lives and until we subscribe to those demands, destiny is reduced to a daydream. This is why we must match every revelation of our redemptive picture from scripture with responsibility. When we see our redemptive picture and respond to its demands, we commit God to make it a reality. Therefore, receive grace to engage the Word of God as a lifestyle, thereby leading to the fulfilment of your glorious destiny in Jesus’ name! Remain ever Blessed! Are you born again? Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord? If you haven’t, you can do so as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • Group sensitises women on breast cancer

A faith-based non-governmental organisation, Joyful Smile Foundation (JSF), last week organised a breast cancer awareness programme for no fewer than 50 women in Lagos.

The awareness, which held at the Health Centre, Ojodu Abiodun was based on the United Nation Organisation declaration of October for breast cancer sensitisation.

Executive director of JSF, Pastor Tola Kayode, said breast cancer was an avoidable health challenge with sufficient awareness.

Women, according to him, can beat the breast cancer threat with enough knowledge.

A public health educator, Mrs. Margaret Tijani, described cancer as an uncontrollable cells division of the body that could come out in lump form in the breast, armpit or shoulder.

While stating that not lumps are cancerous, Tijani advised women to carry out breast self -examination though preliminary exercise.

Monthly self-examination, according to her, should usually be five days after their menstrual flow.

For women after menstruation, she advised they pick a date in the month for the examination.

Lamenting the high incidence of breast cancer in Nigeria, Tijani stated that the condition is proving to be no respecter of age as many children have been discovered to be suffering from it.

Tijani advised women to take prompt attention to lump in any part of their bodies and not be spiritual or religious about it.

Some of the causes of breast cancer, according to her, are long use of contraceptives, multiple sexual partners, family history, obesity and junk foods, among others.

  • Economic crisis a divine warning, says cleric

The current economic hardship is orchestrated by God to draw Nigerians to Himself, the founder of Divine Chosen Vine Ministries International, Dr Godwin Chukwudire, has stated.

The economic crisis, according to him, is because Nigerians have forsaken God and forgotten His ways.

He spoke with our correspondent last week in Lagos.

Chukwudire warned that except Nigerians turn to God, 2017 may even be tougher for the nation.

He said: “God is angry with Nigerians. He said Nigerians are very good but they no longer obey Him.

“He blessed Nigeria more than all the nations of the world but the leaders have looted everything and the poor are getting poorer.”

“2017 will be a judgment year, a year of catastrophe. Many things will go wrong especially in Nigeria.

“We must join hands to pray so that these things don’t happen. The hardship coming up will be so severe that many people will abandon going to church while many pastors will quit preaching the word.”

He however called on Nigerians to return to God for reversal of the current hardship.

“God said he can heal the nation if only they turn to him. God is interested in this nation but the leaders must change for good,” Chukwudire stated.

General Overseer of the church, Rev. Edith Okunbanjo, said the congress “is aimed at winning souls and to glorify the name of Jesus through healing of those who were oppressed of the devil.

“It is a platform by which God’s blessing will be poured out in His people.”
