  • FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS (4)

    FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS (4)
When Jesus set free the adulterous woman he told her ‘go and sin no more’, the crowd must have thought how impossible it will be for such a woman (known for her immoral lifestyle) to go and sin no more. Jesus immediately told the crowd what will make it possible. He said to them, “I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the Light of life.” Jesus is the Light, if the woman follows Jesus’ teachings and ways she will never walk in darkness/sin anymore and she will be a light. So also anyone willing to give up his/her sinful ways to truly follow Jesus the Light will sin no more- such will be made to be like Jesus as he follows continually, I am a living testimony; where I am today isn’t where I was when I first started following the Light; it’s getting better by the day and my light is shining brighter and brighter day by day.

Yes, when you follow Jesus you will be a light and your light is meant to shine. Jesus told his followers, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” Light cannot be hidden so is anyone who is a light, your lifestyle will show that you are a light. You are to live godly lifestyle that will attract the world (sinners) to the Light; thereby delivering them from darkness.

One who is light produces these godly lifestyles:
    – Love: loves God and neighbours; loves God with all his heart, soul and strength- lives a life that is pleasing to Him. Loves his fellow human being especially the one who doesn’t deserve to be loved; shows unmerited/unconditional love. And will do no harm to anybody.
    – Joy: joyful in spite of affliction, persecution, trial, sorrow etc., not in pretense but real joy. This makes one different and people want to know the source of such strength.
    – Peace: Peaceful in times of quarrels, conflicts, distress, fighting. A peace maker.
    – Longsuffering: bears very long with another without giving up; long patience even when offended.
    – Kindness: in spite of hatred, meanness, unkindness.
    – Goodness: to all especially the wicked and undeserving.
    – Faithfulness: steadfast in good works.
    – Gentleness: tender, respectful, polite, descent, friendly, in spite of antagonism and harshness
    – Self-Control: discipline in difficult times; with emotions and desires in check.
Willingness to follow Jesus will make these lifestyles possible, bringing glory to God.

Imagine what this nation will be like if we all live this way. If only 50% in Nigeria live thus, many will come to the Light and our nation will be great because righteousness exalts a nation but sin diminishes a nation.

For the Nigerian motto: UNITY AND FAITH, PEACE AND PROGRESS to be- let your light shine!

    SONG: “TRY A LITTLE KINDNESS”
If you see your brother standing by the road
with a heavy load from the seeds he’s sowed
and if you see your sister falling by the way
just stop and say, you’re going the wrong way

You got to try a little kindness
    Yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
and if you try a little kindness
    then you’ll overlook the blindness
of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets

Don’t walk around the down and out
Lend a helping hand instead of doubt
and the kindness that you show every day
will help someone along their way. Song Writers: Bobby Austin, Curt Sapaugh

  • ‘I almost ended up a roadside mechanic’

‘I almost ended up a roadside mechanic’

General Overseer of The World Overcomers’ Ministries, Evangelist Steve Pelemo, clocked 60 recently. He spoke with Sunday Oguntola on his life, ministry and passion. Excerpts:

A 6 60, would you say God has done well for you?

God has done super well. If you know who is talking before you and where I am now, you will realise it takes God. I should not be sitting down with you. I’m a local person. I used to tell people because of passport photograph, I couldn’t go to secondary school on time.

There was no passport photograph to put in my form for Common Entrance in the 60s. My father couldn’t afford it and after that I landed in Ibadan as a motor mechanic apprentice. I used to trek from Ojo to Sango in Ibadan everytime to and fro. I learnt it for a year and then the idea came that I write the people I was staying a letter and pretended it was my father that asked me to return home.

So, I wrote a letter and posted it as if it was my father that they should send me home for Christmas. The idea came because as I moved back and forth from Ojo to Sango, I saw young kids in University of Ibadan (UI).

That gave me desire to go back to school. So when I wrote that letter, they sent me back. I told my father I wanted to go back to school. So I went through modern school. From modern school to secondary school then came back to Lagos where I was working with New Nigeria Newspapers with my school certificate.

I was earning N100 with a deduction of N4. I’m the first of 15 kids.

There was tremendous pressure on me to fend for my younger siblings. In New Nigeria, there were two different canteens. One was for senior and junior staff like me. The senior staff canteen was well-furnished and air conditioned.

So, I looked at myself as a second class citizen and decided to go to school. I wanted to come back and eat in the senior staff canteen. That was why I started looking for admission.

They asked who will sponsor me and I answered God will. I read Psalms 23 that saw that the Lord is my shepherd. Part of the responsibility of a shepherd is provision.  God saw me through tertiary institution and here I am today.

You are synonymous with village evangelism, why did you decide to specialise on that?

I am from a village call Ekpedo in Akoko-Edo local government area but I wasn’t born there. I was born in Ajowa another village in Ondo state but schooled in Ogidi. Growing up, there was this herbalist that lived beside our house and many times he called me to help him write incantations.

When I see what he asked me to write, the way they will use those things, I discover that somebody can stay in the village and scatter marriages in the city. Someone can stay in the village and command someone to die in the city. If you don’t have Christ, those things used to come to pass because they have no spiritual defense.

When I gave my life to Christ, I discovered a lot of work must be done in the villages. (I deleted some words)In 1983 after my youth service, I discovered if I really want to make impact, I should go back to villages and confront those forces. Some of the problems we are having in the city are orchestrated in the village. That was the initial thing that prompted me and we have seen a number of issues that God has used us to confront.

You took off immediately after your youth service?

Sure, in fact before my youth service. While I was in school, we were traveling doing some evangelism in local areas.

And you came into full time ministry?

Not really. I had my ministry The World Overcomer that specialises in village evangelism and other things before the church started. By the grace of God, I am an accountant. I just wanted to qualify as a chartered accountant, get a good job, settle down, make money and pump it into the gospel. So that was why I didn’t start full time.

But God had another plan for me. He’s been calling me right then but I couldn’t really pick up the call. It was not as if I was disobedient to the call until 1987. I travelled to the United Kingdom and I was in a meeting in Kensington temple. The preacher came and said the title of my message is my own way, your way.

Immediately at that point, I got caught off from what he was saying and the Spirit started preaching to me that God has been calling me to preach while I kept saying I wanted to be sponsoring the gospel. That was when I made up my mind to become full time.

I first came down to Nigeria, told my wife and went back as an associate pastor. But my mind was still in the villages. So, I just told them that I can’t stay in the United Kingdom. That was how I came back into Nigeria and in 1990 we started the church arm of the ministry

You started pastoring in the United Kingdom?

Yes, I started as an associate pastor. In fact, my passport was in the Home Office. That time there was no problem. Everything was in line for me to become a residence of UK.

I went to collect back my passport from the Home Office. I said I was not called to stay in that place. So, I came to Nigeria and we started the church arm of the ministry.

Right from the onset, everybody in the church knew we were for village evangelism. Anywhere we heard any news of satanic activities we’d pick our bags and take off.

You are purely an evangelist. How easy has it been for you to pastor a church?

God helped me with a good wife and I have good people around me right from the onset. To be a pastor, in addition to just preaching, you need to know people one-on-one. Where I’m deficient, my wife is strong. So, she has been able to help.

Then I have other graces of being able to affect people in the area of their needs through words of wisdom, which is needful for any pastor. A number of people by His grace have been affected positively in the church and I’m standing on that grace.

Church administration has a way of tying down or holding back evangelists like you. What has been your own experience in this regards?

One of the real problems is if you don’t know your calling, you can get lost in other people’s way of life. From day one when the church started, I knew that I’m called for evangelism. Everybody in the Church knows that our primary vision as a Church is village crusade. Sometimes about forty people will go with me for one month moving from village to village. Those that are left in the Church will be interceding for us.

You can see that everybody in the Church is involved. So, they are used to my not been around. By the grace of God, I have exposed the church to the word. As they were growing up they became strong in the word that even when I’m not around, it doesn’t make much difference.

I know that I can’t build the church. It’s God that will build the church and if I’m busy doing what He has called me to do, the church will still stand. A number of people can point to miracle as a result of their contribution towards evangelism.

Now that you 60, what will change?

My dedication will change. I used to tell people my time is short. If nobody tells me, even if I’m still jumping and the strength is still there (I do lot of exercise), I know that the time is not there. The bible says we should number our days so that we can give our hearts to wisdom.

I know that the time is short and I must do what He wants me to do in a much more aggressively. That is the only thing I can say is changing. Whatever I want to do, I have no time left again. I’m not a young guy again and I know that the time is short. I must do that work much more than ever before so that when the day comes, I can die happy.

  • Group ends training on discipleship

A two-day training session on Alpha Course, a modern tool for evangelism, ended last week in Lagos with Christians urged to commit the more to discipleship.

No fewer than 50 church leaders and trainers attended the conference, which focused on evangelism, discipleship and unity of faith.

Tagged Run Alpha conference, the session was organised by Alpha Nigeria, an interdenominational evangelism and discipleship ministry.

The training considered issues such as equipping laity to lead, discipleship outside the church, training laity in ministry, unity and societal transformation.

The Catholic Archbishop of Metropolitan Lagos, Dr Alfred Martins, said the courses are veritable tools to better understand and appreciate the Christian faith.

Represented by Parish priest of Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Lagos, Paschal Nwaezeapu, Martins said:  “Alpha is a tool needed to transform the decay and the dark world.

“You begin to appreciate your faith more or you come to believe in God with it. Alpha challenges us to renew our faith. It’s interactive and promotes friendship. It activates peoples’ faith and makes it come fully alive”.

He added the training gives joy “once you start running it and provides the opportunity to serve,” saying it can be a basis for Christian unity because “it talks about Jesus, which should be the unity force among Christians.”

Mr. Femi Lijadu, one of the participants, said: “The process of deepening one’s faith is a marathon. Hence Alpha’s vision is to re-evangelise the nation, revitalise the church and transform the society.”

He identified local churches as critical to the training, saying they provide the manpower, structure and resources to reach the outside world.

Lijadu added: “It is an idea where you give people space to discover their faith and explore questions, forming a bridge between the church and the world.”

He praised the global organisation for its invaluable services in “collecting data from around the world about what is happening, equipping the church by telling true stories and trying to make it learning experience.”

Pioneer Director of Alpha Nigeria, Mrs. Biola Ogunbiyi, said: “It’s fully Spirit -driven as far as the Holy-Spirit is involved.

“What is left is what we as people are doing. It gives you confidence, you know who you are in Christ. It’s not about you or me and it’s about giving the Holy-Spirit rooms to do what He’s sent to do as on the day of Pentecost.”

National Director of Alpha Nigeria, Olatunji Andrew, said there should be no pressure in discipleship.

The training, rather he said, “presents people with the truth and gives them the opportunity to make their choices”.

He said conviction is the work of the Holy Spirit with the organisation merely a tool that gets messages out in ways people will understand.

The former Provost of Marina Church Lagos, Very Rev Yinka Omololu, said the very thing to do in setting up any Alpha group is to set up a dedicated prayer team immediately.

  • Three monsters Buhari must conquer, by Akinola

Presiding Bishop of Rhema Christian Church and Towers, Ota, Ogun state, Dr Taiwo Akinola, has identified economic recession, insecurity and corruption as the major challenges the current administration must tackle headlong.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari will write his name in gold if he fixes these hydra-headed challenges before the end of his tenure.

Akinola spoke last week with reporters at the international headquarters of the church ahead of the 25th anniversary of Rhema world convention.

The convention with theme come, all things are now ready holds from November 6-13 with eminent ministers such as Pastor Tunde Bakare, Archbishop Lanre Obembe, Rev Kunle Adesina, Bishop Ed-Nelson Isibor and Bishop Victor Akilla leading an array of preachers to the event.

Other ministers expected at the silver jubilee that will attract participants from Ghana, South Africa and United States of America among others are Apostle David Rivera, Bishop Israel Alaya, Apostle Mike Tomowewo and Archbishop John Osa-Oni.

Akinola lamented the ongoing recession, saying several Nigerians have lost their jobs as companies shut down.

He called on the federal government to carry out a critical reappraisal and reviews of its economic polices.

According to him: “Hardline policies and befuddling body languages will never help the economy; they will rather scare away investors.”

He urged the government to pump money into the system so that salaries can be paid as at when due and Nigerians can smile again.

On insecurity, the cleric advised the current administration to embrace dialogue instead of utilizing military options alone.

He said: “It is not always tactical to fight battles on many fronts at the same time.

At any rate, what do we gain if we succeeded in decimating Boko Haram only to open up other equally deadly war fronts?”

He commended the anti-corruption stance of the government but said the fight must be holistic.

Akinola also said government should take proactive measures to prevent corruption instead of chasing thieves.

This, he said, is better than “waiting to spend scarce resources on unending investigations and prosecutions.”

  • How the Holy Spirit Empowers for Exploits! (3)

In previous parts of this three-part teaching series, we established that without the Holy Spirit, we cannot manifest the exploits that God ordained for us (Luke 4:18-19, 37, 7:17; John 20:19-22; Acts 2:1-41).

Furthermore, we explored the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, and the Spirit of Guidance as the operations of the Holy Spirit that engender exploits in our lives.  In this concluding part, we shall yet examine another dimension of the Holy Spirit that empowers us for exploits, which is:

    • Spirit of servanthood: Let’s recognise that serving God’s interest requires the Spirit of servanthood for continuity, sustenance, steadfastness and maintenance of the tempo. Concerning Jesus, The Bible says: Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name (Philippians 2:5-9; see also Isaiah 42:1-4; Luke 22:25-27).

When the Spirit of servanthood comes upon us, we don’t make noise to make news because that Spirit changes our status noiselessly. Furthermore, serving God’s interest secretly qualifies us for open rewards. Therefore, maintaining the tempo of our stewardship continually enhances the rate of our impact on earth. For instance, Jesus said to those who had served with Him: Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel (Luke 22:28-30; see also Exodus 23:25-26; Job 36:11; Luke 22:26).

We also discover from scriptures that the Spirit of servanthood is the platform for the rise of giants and leaders. For instance, when Prophet Samuel went to anoint one of the sons of Jesse as king, the Bible records that all his sons were rejected by God except David, the servant (1 Samuel 16:1-13; Psalms 89:20-24).

God only positions and elevates servants, not good talkers and supervisors. No one truly serving God’s interest ever ends as a beggar or in regrets, but as a record breaker. Concerning Job, God said unto satan: …Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? (Job 1:8).

In the preceding verses, the Bible records that Job was the greatest entrepreneur in his days: His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east (Job 1:3 see also Job 1:1-2).

Serving God’s interest wholeheartedly is one of the requirements for exploits. Therefore, let us not allow man’s “well done” to confuse us because it is only applause; it is God’s “well done” that brings the rewards (Luke 19:12-26).

In addition, it is important to note that Job suffered because he was ignorant and afraid. However, because God has not given us the spirit of fear and we have access to the truth of scriptures, we are not permitted to suffer the setbacks that Job experienced. Also, the devil has no right to afflict our bodies because they are the temples of the Holy Spirit and we are ordained to glorify God with them (Job 1:10, 3:25; Proverbs 29:25; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 2 Timothy 1:7).

In conclusion, it is important to know that every redeemed child of God has a golden destiny that is loaded with treasures, but until we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, we can never manifest it. Therefore, we must partner with the Holy Spirit in order to manifest the exploits that God ordained for us. Our places will not be lost in Jesus’ name! Remain ever blessed!

Are you born again? If you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, you can do so as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • Submit to your husbands, women told

Women have been warned never to take decisions without consulting their husbands.

Wife of the Assistant Pastor-in-charge of Lagos Province 25 of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor (Mrs.) Kemi Adegoke, stated this at the three-day annual sisters’ convention.

The convention was organised by RCCG Priests’ Area, Lagos Province 59 with the theme “filled with His fullness”.

She said taking instructions from husbands is part of the submission God expect from godly women.

“The more you give in to your spouse, the more blessing you receive from God,” Adegoke submitted.

She said women must acknowledge their emptiness to be filled with God’s fullness.

“There is always a gift in you which you can utilize; learn to live a fulfilled life by being a vessel in God’s hand,” she advised.

Adegoke also enjoined women to always learn to be quiet.

“Even when you have ideas, keep them. Rather listen and be focused and prayerfully ask God who should mentor you to fullness,” she stressed.

Pastor-in-charge of Priests’ Zone Lagos Province 59, Pastor Akin Akintoye, said when women are filled with God’s fullness, nothing can stop them.

  • Cleric warns against political, material baits

The Rector of Baptist College of Theology, Obinze, Rev John Enyinnaya has called on the Christians to be wary of political trappings, material wealth and other deceptions that sway them from God.

Enyinnaya spoke with our correspondent on the sidelines of the seventh Bible Study Conference organised by Yaba Baptist Church, Lagos.

According to him, the kingdom of darkness is at heightened alert because of the brevity of time left for operation.

He pointed out that deft moves, high level scheming and manipulations are going in the kingdom of darkness against the church.

  • ‘Nigeria needs visions with clear roadmaps’

‘Nigeria needs visions with clear roadmaps’

Counter terrorism and strategic thinking expert Ladi Thompson spoke with Sunday Oguntola on how terrorism and rising ethnic agitations for autonomy can be tackled in a win-win manner. Excerpts:

How do you assess the state of the nation?

We can see that Nigeria has finally arrived at the thresholds of its finest hour. If we could think straight and get things right, we will realise that we are at better position than most nations of the world. We will ride on global storms and emerge true champions, not only in Africa but become key players on the globe

If we look careful at the chaotic dissonance, the explosions, the loud noises across our nation now, all these things are just symptoms. They are nothing but the death traps of an old order. If Nigerians will just take a breath and step back to take steps, we would realise that the happenings are not local but global affairs.

There is a wind of change blowing across the entire globe. Anything manufactured by man has an expiry date, whether it is on governmental or individual side. There are certain aspects of our national inheritance that have ended.

Our railway track has reached the end and we need a new set of people who know what to do to move all that tracks to a particular direction.

So, Nigeria needs a new direction?

That’s the point I am driving at. The problem of Nigeria is that we have this fire brigade approach to understanding where we should go and how to get there. We must look at the present and realize this is the final chapter of Nigeria as we used to know it.

As important as one’s future is, it does not have to appear in one’s past. The best place one’s future can come out from is through inspiration, not from the past. In fact, if we are wise, we need to help everybody to stop looking at the past.

The main reason people are looking at the past is because we are yet to understand what it is to have a charismatic government or leadership that understands the only way to process a future is by locating a vision for the future.

    You mean a national vision?

Yes, a national vision. You will realise there is nothing Nigerians are looking forward to. This country has been running on visionless hope. We need to change that narrative. What do visions do? Visions take you out of today and locate you into a tomorrow.

For instance, if we had vision, we would have shared it with Niger Delta youths to address the restiveness there now. We meet them and let them know we acknowledge we take resources out of their region but in the next five years, we should let them know what they stand to gain in return. That will give them hope and tackle restlessness among them.

There have to be people who could rethink and look into the future. Like I said, we need to first look at the global settings because the fire brigade approach will never work.

What is the global setting saying?

We must know first of all the reason why we must take the global setting very important is that average Nigerian is a potential leader, unlike most other countries. And I can tell you God created them like that for a purpose.

Look at the global setting and you will realise everything manufactured by man has an expiry date. The western civilisation was a dominant standard in global affairs. It was armed with the advantages of vast technology and democratic effects, which they developed from Greek roots.

So, they championed the model of life based on rational thinking and pursuit of personal pleasure. Science soundly defeated metaphysical and theological worldviews. Because of scientific advancement, theological views had to take back seats. In the western world, religion has been relegated to the back seat.

Now they enjoyed that until another flavor of civilisation nurtured in the Middle East threw up a violent streak that demanded absolute surrender as an alternative to the western glory of civilisation. They presented the metaphysical basis of belief with a total disdain for the scientific.

What we call the Boko Haram is a local face of that global insurgence and what it is doing is to challenge the old order. Nobody expected it but they have been nurtured and been brought up for a while. It has created a new type of war devoid of any rules of engagement. It has no borders and the armies don’t wear uniforms.

In short, the western world has never seen this kind of thing before and don’t have any capacity to handle it. Now this situation can never be pushed away. It is waiting for a solution and fresh paradigm shift. It is waiting for fresh thinking, which can come from anywhere in the world.

Once that fresh thinking arrives, even the western world will realise the old world where it could differentiate religion from state is gone forever. It is just a matter of time. There is a new world emerging where we are going to have a marriage of religion with state.

There is a raging war between what came out from the Middle East and what the west has been accommodating. That actually is a global situation. In the future of the globe, once these things change, it is going to affect economies. It is going to affect national borders passport. Everything will change after it.

Technology has come to stay but what is happening in the world has clearly shown it has its limitation. The insights that lead to this change in the globe has decided to teach the western world that there is an invisible world that gives instructions to men. It is discovery that is shaking the entire world.

There is an engineering in the inside fighting the engineering on the outside and the engineering focuses on the outside in the long run. Stomachs filled with pleasant health cannot win against empty stomachs with firing hearts. There has to be a compromised solution coming that the whole globe can buy into.

    How do these affect Nigeria?

When Nigeria was born, it was born to be the giant of Africa. It was born with the potentials to be a leader of Africa. What happens to Nigeria is that we have not added to that tracks created by the colonials since helping us to start Nigeria. We have been following only a few ideas we borrow from here and there.

We have a generation that is not willing to embrace the tracks again. The cries of liberty have been coming from them. The economy has gone down. They have realised what is on ground is not working. They average Nigerian looks into the future and sees nothing.

By reflexes, anyone that cannot look into a vision goes back into the revisions. So those who saw the early days of Biafra are turning back to look for the future in the past. The Dan Fodio jihadists won by the global resurgence are simply still hoping that there can be another Fulani uprising where some Fulani will finally rule Nigeria.

It is a bad dream that can never happen. In the south south, the Niger Delta agitators are nurturing certain dreams of what life was before oil exploration. The challenge is Nigeria needs to get its leadership back now.

    How?

The present leadership is coming to buy time for Nigeria. It came on a salvage and rescue mission. The salvage and rescue has been done. So, if they say that’s what they use their first year to do, I don’t mind. But there are certain things we are expecting right now.

Nigeria needs to go and learn lessons from Dubai. Dubai used to be a sleeping village of fishermen who were core divers in the Arab world. That was until a man came on board.  He looked at the entire village and saw into the future. He made a few statements available in books for Nigerian leaders and special advisers to learn from.

The bottom line is to stop chasing other civilisations, especially when they are busy with their own problems. Instead go into the future and set a bigger standard.  Create your vision around that and go after it. That is what Nigeria needs now.

There is the use of visions to create something everybody in Nigeria can relate with. The power of visions is visions are engaging and transform into a tomorrow. Visions make one resilient.

What you have seen in the tomorrow is what makes you know that we can gain today. Now a change agenda that has no vision, a change agenda that has no direction of change, a pre-determined pace of change is a counterfeit.

It is a like a man waking up in the morning with no destination. Nobody is going to make sacrifice in that kind of situation. As a matter fact, it is well recognised all over the world that wherever there is not vision, the people will rebel; they throw off restraints.

  • How the Holy Spirit Empowers for Exploits! (2)

Last week, we began this teaching series with the understanding that the anointing of the Holy Spirit, among others, empowers the redeemed to command exploits. “Exploits” in this context means to set the pace, blaze the trail, achieve outstanding feats and bring to bear unimaginable accomplishments on earth.

In this week’s teaching, we shall examine two dimensions of the Holy Spirit that empower us for exploits.

    • The Holy Spirit operates as the Spirit of wisdom and understanding: It is important to recognise that the Spirit of wisdom is not the spirit of wise talks, but the Spirit of mighty deeds. This is because mighty words are accessible from the schools of psychology and philosophy but the Spirit of wisdom is the Spirit of mighty works. Speaking of Jesus, the Bible says: And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? (Matthew 13:54; see also Isaiah 11:1-2; Luke 4:18-19).

Wise talks are cheap; it is wise deeds that are scarce. In addition, it is common knowledge that the story of creation remains the greatest epitome of exploits as the order is unique and the sustainability is out-of-this-world; yet, it is a product of wisdom. The Bible says: The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens (Proverbs 3:19; see also Psalms 104:24; Jeremiah 10:12).

Thus, it is by the Spirit of wisdom that creation came to be and is sustained. In the same vein, when that Spirit comes upon a man, it makes him of quick understanding and he commands exploits cheaply. For instance, Joseph’s life was without form and void just like the earth was at the beginning; but at the instance of the Spirit of wisdom, his destiny was recovered. The Bible records that when Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, Pharaoh declared to his servants: …Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou (Genesis 41:38-40; see also 1 Kings 3:1-13, 4:29-34, 10:1-7; Job 32:8; Isaiah 11:2; Daniel 2:16-19, 46, 6:1-3; John 6:63).

What this Spirit does is to show us the way to do things and the way to go about a given task that nobody else knows. He also shows us how to go about our lives to make the most of it. That is why the Bible says: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come (John 16:13).

The Spirit of wisdom and understanding is simply a showing Spirit. What He showed Joseph took him from the prison to the palace overnight. I pray that as you fellowship with the Holy Spirit, He will show you what eyes have not seen, nor ears heard and what has not entered into the heart of any man!

    • He is also the Spirit of guidance: We understand from scriptures that the Holy Spirit receives guidance from God concerning our lives and shows it to us. That means the Holy Ghost is the intermediary between God and us; when He receives from God, He reveals it to us. That is what makes Him the Spirit of guidance (John 16:13-14).

Also, He is our covenant gateway to a world of unlimited greatness. For instance, when this Spirit guided Abraham, the Bible records that he became great (Genesis 12:1-3; 13:2).

Therefore, every guidance from the Holy Spirit takes us to the next level of greatness that God has in store for us. That is why we can never outgrow the need for divine guidance. Furthermore, we saw an army in the Book of Prophet Joel, who operated absolutely under the influence of the Spirit of guidance. The Bible says: And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word… (Joel 2:11; see also Genesis 22:1-18; Exodus 9:1, 8, 13; 2 Samuel 5:18-20, 22-25; Joel 2:1-10; John 5:30).

The steps of this unique army are accurately guided for their greatness to manifest without struggles. In these last days, there shall be a rise of this kind of end-time army; one that the world has never seen but divine guidance will be very pivotal in their operation. I pray that we will all be a part of this army in Jesus’ name! (Zechariah 4:1-6).

  • Matilukuro is new primate of First African Church

First African Church, the first indigenous church in the nation, last Sunday installed a new primate.  He is Most Rev. Sunday Matilukuro.

Matilukuro was elected 2nd primate of the church at the 2016 annual national convention in Igbokoda, Ogun state.

Speaking with our correspondent after the installment, he promised to take the church to the next level.

Matilukuro pledged to concentrate on evangelism as well as women and youth empowerment.

He also said he would build convention ground and complete the seminary building of the first indigenous church in the nation.

According to him: “On evangelism, the First African Church is not adequately known in Nigeria today, we are a church of 125 years old.

“We are the first church founded by indigenous Africans and when Nigeria got independence in 1960, late Nnmadi Azikwe had his independence thanksgiving service in the church.

“Yet, the church is not well known all over the country. By God’s grace, I am expecting that in the next five years, there will be explosion of harvest of souls in the church.”

Matilukuro said it is necessary for all Nigerians to support President Buhari’s administration towards having a better country.

According to him: “I see President Buhari as someone who loves this country. If we give him the support that he requires, I believe we will experience a turnaround in our country.

“Nobody should expect any magic. Things have gone very bad before now and that is why we need concerted efforts to bring everything back to normalcy and we will begin to enjoy. I believe at the end of the tunnel there will be light.”

Admonishing the new primate and the congregation on selfless service in his sermon titled: “Self-denial and humility”, the outgoing Primate, Most Rev. Emmanuel Koya, urged members to imbibe the exemplary values of Jesus Christ.

He challenged the new primate not to compromise while discharging his ministerial duties.

He urged him to please God rather than men no matter the confrontations or ministerial challenges.
