Why Nigeria needs Buhari, by Osinbajo

Nigeria needs an honest and straightforward man like President Muhammadu Buhari to move the nation forward at a time like this, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stated.

He spoke last week when the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Church, Pastor Williams Kumuyi, paid him a courtesy visit ahead of his crusade at the National Stadium, Abuja.

The vice president stressed that Buhari is a President who will not cut deals but is only interested in moving the forward.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, LaoluAkande, Osinbajo said: “We are very happy that we have a President who is honest, a President who is straight forward, a President who is operating from the genuineness of his heart, this is the kind of leader that we need now.”

He also said that he had worked together very well with the President.

Acknowledging the current economic situation in the country, the Vice President said that the current administration did not create the problems.

He said: “The reason (we are here at this time,) is known to the Lord Himself. Every day I wake up knowing there is a cause for being here and it is to move the country forward.”

Osinbajo told Pastor William Kumuyi that the clean-up of Ogoni and the Niger Delta was very important.

He said: “The situation is very bad. I have been in the area a few times, but we need peace in the area to be able to carry on with the clean-up exercise.”

On the power sector, he noted that by February this year, the country was doing 5000MW of electricity for the first time in history.

He lamented militants’ attacks on the pipelines have made things bad for electricity generation and cut the oil revenues of the nation.

He was clear that God had a purpose for choosing the President and himself to serve at this time, saying “this is the doing of the Lord.”

Kumuyi thanked God for the progress made so far by the administration.

He said: “God will fulfill the purpose for which He brought you at a time like this.”

  • Motailatu organisation shakes Ondo at 52nd founder’s day

Motailatu organisation shakes Ondo at 52nd founder’s day

Motailatu Church of God (MCG) painted Ondo city where its headquarters is located red last week during its 52nd founder’s day anniversary.

For three days, members and elders of the church from various parishes converged on the city for activities marking the occasion.

The organisation was founded by His Most Eminence, Archbishop Isaiah M. Akinadewo (OmoJesu) on June 14, 1964.

He died on December 26, 2014.

Presided over by the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the church, Senior Superintendent Gabriel F. Akinadewo (OmoJesu II), the anniversary witnessed visits to historical sites.

A convoy of vehicles from Ondo City went to Bolorunduro town, a distance of 15 minutes, to worship in OkeIgbalaOlu C&S Church founded in 1936 by the late Chairman, Spiritual Workers’ Union in the defunct Western Region, Saint Benjamin A. Adekahunsi.

Archbishop Akinadewo was ordained in this church by his father, Saint Adekahunsi, as ‘the Lion of the tribe of Judah’ in 1976.

The parishioners were happy that 80 years after the church was founded and 40 years after the ordination of Archbishop Akinadewo, they visited the premises.

From there, the close to 20 vehicles in the convoy moved to Mount Ararat in the same vicinity where Special Apostle David Akinadewo preached on the essence of  ‘the powerful effect of prayer on the mountain’ as illustrated by the Biblical Prophet Elijah and Jesus Christ.

As he was preaching, heavens sent ‘showers of blessing’ on those in attendance.

The convoy immediately moved to the Cathedral of OkeIgbalaOlu C&S Church in Sabo area of Ondo City, also founded by Saint Adekahunsi, for a revival and later prayed at the tombs of Adekahunsi and Holy Mother Emily O. Akinadewo.

After returning to the Mission House of Motailatu Church of God on Brigadier Ademulegun Road, special prayers held at the tombs of the Patriarch and Matriarch of the church, Archbishop Akinadewo and Superintendent General Apostolic Mother Mary A. Akinadewo.

After the prayers, series of bible lessons were conducted which dovetailed into vigil at St. Adekahunsi Motailatu Cathedral, OkeIwosan, Ondo.

The vigil was conducted by Special Apostle Babajide Akinadewo.

At 2pm, a procession was held round the town and hundreds of residents joined the parishioners.

Shouts of ‘Motailatu’, ‘OmoJesu’ and ‘Baba Oluso’ were heard from the joyous crowd as the convoy moved through popular streets, such as Oke-Isegun, Lafenwa, Olorunsola, Yaba, Idi-Isin, Surulere, OpeOluwa, GaniFawehinmi and Mokola.

The choir, supported by trumpeters and drummers, rendered melodious songs.

Many old men and women, who could not join the convoy, prayed for the growth of the church andAkinadewo’s children.

The thanksgiving service on Sunday held with Special Recognition Awards given to 56 families in the city.

According to Senior Superintendent Akinadewo, the award was given to the families “to appreciate the support given to our father when he started the missionary work”.

Before the service started at 10am, the church was filled to the brim.

The choristers, in their white garment and blue cape, rendered beautiful songs to mark the 52nd anniversary and annual conference.

In his sermon, Akinadewo, who quoted relevant verses in the Bible, said there was ‘a big stone’ hindering the progress of the country and ‘only God can roll away the stone’.

He urged political and religious leaders to fear God because “according to Psalm 62:11, power belongeth unto God”.

Superintendent James Akinadewo, Special Apostle Victor Adelalure and Special Apostle AbayomiDaramola supervised the award event.

The four head teachers of Motailatu Primary Schools in the city, founded by Archbishop Akinadewo in the early 80s, were also honoured.

After receiving their awards, representatives of the families thanked God for the life of the founder “and we also want to appreciate the children for their efforts in projecting the image of their father and ensuring that the church continues to carry on the good works of Baba OmoJesu”.

The ‘seven prayers in seven minutes’ session was spiritually magnifying and soul lifting as members prayed for the world, Africa, Nigeria, Ondo State, Ondo City, families and individuals.

  • Kukah: Churches have become theatres, drama houses

Kukah: Churches have become theatres, drama houses

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah has urged Catholics in the country to engage more in evangelism.

He said the time has come for them to win converts into the catholic faith as the whole world is sinking deeper into sin.

Bishop Kukah stated this last Sunday at the Catholic Church of the Nativity, Festac Town, Lagos during the 2016 father’s day celebration special mass service where he was the guest of honour.

The charismatic Bishop, who prayed for the over 40 men of the parish nominated for different categories awards by the Catholic Men Organisation of Nigeria, said modernity has challenged the basic tenets of Christianity.

“Life has become a transaction. Churches have become theaters and drama houses where the saving of souls for the kingdom of God has been relegated to the background and Jesus Christ conscripted to fight our battles,” he lamented.

He said Catholics must recognise their two thousand years of victorious history and help spread the good news at this point in time to address the dwindling faith in missionary works.

“This is the time when authentic witnesses to Christ are needed.  May all those who defend the faith with vigorous outlook, passionately partake in the evangelical work,” he stressed.

Addressing recipients of the Catholic Men Organisation awards, Bishop Kukah reminded the men that evangelical mission was enormous but added that God will see them through it all.

He advised them to be ready to leave everything behind and follow Jesus Christ, adding that Christ will help them succeed in the tortuous journey they have embarked on.

Parish Priest of the Church Rev. Fr. Simeon Iwu said the call to fatherhood is a call from God to be a co-creator with Him.

The journey, he said, is filled with opportunities to become bearers of God’s goodness.

Chairman of the Parish’s Catholic Men Organisation of Nigeria, Dr. Jude Mbama said the father’s day feast is an occasion to celebrate fathers, pray for them and reflect on their roles in the church, family and nation.

According to him: “It has often been said that the family is the basic unit and domestic church of the larger society.

“We as fathers must align our roles as enshrined in the CMO’s constitution and bye laws by promoting evangelism, supporting the Church and clergy”.

  • Unveiling the Unlimited Power of Faith!

We discover from our deep reading of the Bible, that faith is the master key to taking delivery of our inheritances in Christ. For instance, items brought by courier men to our homes must be signed for before delivery. Likewise, when angels descend with our packages and the appropriate signature is not received, they are forced to return with them. Therefore, faith is the appropriate signature that compels or commits angels to release our packages to us. That is why Jesus said to the father of the demon possessed boy: …If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth (Mark 9:23).

We must understand that though everything in redemption belongs to us, only what we believe is released. This is because any truth of scriptures we receive and believe, commits God to empower us to realise it. That is, we must believe the Word before we can be empowered to become what it says. As it is written: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12).

We also discover that faith holds the answer to all the questions of our lives. This is because faith, as a virtue, has unlimited power to deliver everything that pertains to us in God, anytime. When the blind men met Jesus for their healing, He said to them: According to your faith be it unto you (Matthew 9:29).

Furthermore, we understand from scriptures that there is no irreversible case with faith. For example, when one of the rulers of the synagogue told Jairus not to disturb Jesus because his daughter was dead, the Bible records: But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole (Luke 8:50). From this scripture, it is therefore evident that faith has the capacity to revert any situation.

Moreover, when Martha told Jesus that Lazarus was already dead for four days, He replied: …Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? (John 11:39-40).

Thus, through faith, Jairus’ daughter and Lazarus came back to life. That’s how powerful faith is!

    But, what is faith?

    • Faith is a spiritual treasure of inestimable value: That is, we cannot place value on it because it is far beyond what can be measured. Therefore, faith is the answer to every problem of life. For instance, when Jesus’ disciples asked Him why they couldn’t deliver the boy possessed with demons, Jesus said: …Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you (Matthew 17:20; see also Matthew 15:28).

Faith is also the answer to the breakthroughs we desire. Thus, Peter did what he was commanded, believing, and he experienced a boat-sinking, net-breaking dimension of breakthrough. Furthermore, it empowers men for exploits and supernatural breakthroughs. Moreover, it is the master key to a world of unlimited possibilities and the answer to clearing the barriers on our path. The Bible says: By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days (Hebrews 11:30; see also Luke 5:3-8).

We must understand that the worth of any man’s life in the Kingdom is a function of the faith at work in him. That’s why the Bible says …the just shall live by his faith (Habakkuk 2:4; see also Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38).

Faith has the capacity to exempt any man from the horrors of life. As it is written: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith (1 John 5:4; see also Psalms 91:7-8; Matthew 9:29).

Faith deflates every pressure and brings us to the realm of divine pleasure. All these make faith an asset of inestimable value. However, it is important to know that we cannot build our faith without an encounter with God and His Word, and that begins with  you confessing your sins, and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:17). That is what being born again is all about. If you are ready for this new birth experience, please say this prayer and you shall be born again: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • Shock as Lagos pastor, Ahove, dies

Shock as Lagos pastor, Ahove, dies

The Senior Pastor of Conquerors Chapel International, Rev Dr David Ahove, is dead.

Ahove was said to have died on last Monday after complaining of slight headache.

He reportedly died on the way to the hospital.

The vivacious church founder was a key figure in the ill-fated Benny Hinn miracle crusade in 2005.

He was head of the publicity department and hosted strategic meetings prior to the crusade.

Ahove, who was spotted on the first Saturday of June at a function in Ibadan, Oyo State, was full of life.

His church, which used to be on Herbert Macaulay road, EbuteMetta was moved to LSPDC Estate, where he lived following a dispute with the property owners.

The flamboyant preacher was always in the company of his wife, Oluyinka, an associate pastor and lawyer.

  • Foundation lifts Lagos widows

A faith-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Chinwe Bode-Akinwande Foundation (CBA) last week extended helping hands to no fewer than 100 widows in Ikorodu area of Lagos state.

It donated free food stuff, clothes and drugs to the widows in addition to medical check-up.

The gesture was in commemoration of 2016 International Widows’ Day (IWD).

Founder of the organisation, Mrs. Chinwe Bode-Akinwande, said the donation was to change the status of the less-privileged widows.

Widows, she said, deserve support from all and sundry, lamenting many of them have been subjected to dehumanising practices and conditions.

According to her: “The death of their husbands does not mean they should not live again in peace. Their lives should not die with their husbands.

“They should be helped to remain economically strong and socially relevant. This is why we are supporting them with clothes, drugs and medical care.”

Many of the women praised the organisation for coming to their aid.

One of them, Mrs. Clara Nwankwo, said she had been helpless since her husband died six years ago.

“I thank them for bringing smiles to my face. It’s been a while since someone looked my way. I am happy that I can feel human again,” she stated.

  • LOVE…The most excellent way (4)

LOVE is the most excellent way to live – To love God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind also to love your neighbour as yourself. To excel in everything- LOVE. When you live the life of love then you please God completely.

Today we will be talking about LOVE FOR NEIGHBOUR. Who is your neighbor?  Your neighbour is simply your fellow human being.

Love for God and love for neighbour can not truly be separated because your love for God makes it possible for you to love your neighbor. If you say you love God you will obey His command that says: love your neighbour as yourself.  God is love, only when you know love can you practice love. The love people confess/profess to each other without knowing God and having an ongoing relationship with Him is not love that is why it fails- true love never fails as God never fails every other thing will fail but not God/love.

The person that knows God is the one who can truly love, for God will help him to love. The first step to knowing God is when you accept and believe in His Son Jesus Christ whom He sent to reconcile us to Himself.

God prepared me before making me write this message; He helped me get rid of the hatred I didn’t know was in my heart for someone. Do you know you can hate somebody’s lifestyle so much that hatred for that person gradually sets in?

To you this person is not that ‘important’, in that you can comfortably do without him/her so you totally ignore him though with hatred for him in your heart- this is unacceptable to God. Know that hatred is a sin and it hinders our relationship with God and our blessings, so this person is actually very important to you- you’ve got to make peace. God wants us to get rid of all forms of hatred in our hearts.  No matter how bad a person’s lifestyle, we are not permitted to hate his person, in fact we are to show more love to him. This can be very difficult but if God says so, then it is possible as you trust Him to help you.

You are not to accept and follow in the wrong ways of the person but never hate him.

God made me know that hatred makes one live in total darkness which of course can lead one to hell, this is the worst that can happen to anyone. Like I said I didn’t know I was harbouring hatred in my heart for this person. Yes, I don’t like his way of life, all the negative attributes, deceits are all glaring for me to see. Unknowing to me the root of hatred had started growing in me for this person such that I couldn’t see anything good done by him. No one is completely bad without any positive attribute- it’s impossible, we have to deliberately focus on these positive attributes no matter how small they may be- this will help our hearts.  God in His mercies brought this person to mind and made me know I hated him and the dangers of hatred- being covered with darkness.  Darkness!  I was so scared when He showed me the extent of darkness I was in because of the hatred I didn’t realize was in me. I asked God what to do to reach out to this person in love and my loving and merciful Father told me what to do. He made me go show love to this person by giving him gift, I am also to pray for him always especially in his area of weakness – what a loving father we have who is so responsible for our lives- he sanctifies us and makes us ready to be with Him forever. Pray for anyone not living right, don’t condemn the person, the prayers will bring about a change we want to see in him. You are so privileged to know and live in the truth so be merciful to others who aren’t where you are today.

The Bible says “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know no murderer has eternal life abiding in Him.”

God wants us to love without conditions, even when that person is not meeting up with our expectations. This kind of unconditional love God showed us in that while we were yet sinners He sent His only begotten Son to die for our sins, setting us free from the bondage and slavery of sin and eternal death in hell- God wants us to do likewise, to love unconditionally. Give love the same way God has so loved you, show love to all especially the unloving, when you do this it shows that you are a child of God.

Your love for God is expressed or seen in your dealings with others.

This help is coming to you today because God loves you and wants you to enjoy His blessings fully. Heed His word today- show love unconditionally. Search your heart; if there be hatred already growing for someone…get rid of it fast.

Let love, peace and forgiveness reign in our hearts and in NIGERIA!

  • ‘I’m not called to save the wholeworld’

‘I’m not called to save the wholeworld’

Senior pastor of Rock Foundation Church, Abeokuta Ogun State, Rev Tunde Amosun, is an unusual preacher with radical dispositions. He spoke with Sunday Oguntola on his passion, ministry and the body of Christ. Excerpts:

It’s been almost a decade since we spoke last. What have you been up to lately?

I have been busy working on how we can raise a crop of real Christians.

Is that to say there are unreal Christians?

Yes, it is quite easy to be hypocritical. We see an invisible Jesus and so we have to be sure we have a bunch of people really following up on that invisible God.

You could have a crowd of people in the church but how many are really following Christ? At the end of the day, what matters is the content of their lives because people only stay for only a few hours in church.

So, my passion has been to help people grow in Christ; to see Him formed in them every day.

But it is not an attractive call, is it?

It is attractive especially at the individual level. People are suffering from not following Christ. If I am not balanced financially and emotionally, I will suffer for it.

How well are you succeeding doing that?

I can’t score myself but I am learning how to take the word of God to change lives. You see the changes in people and you are delighted. Christianity is all about faith hope and love. These are the three indices that help define a Christian.

You see people growing in these and you feel grateful to God. People are changing and their lives are moving forward.

But it is not a crowd-pulling endeavour, is it?

I don’t believe that is our job. We are not called to pull crowd but to change lives. We are in the business of changing lives and pleasing Jesus. The drive is to be able to confidently give account before Him one day and hear ‘well done’.

A pastor went to Charles Spurgeon one day to complain his church was not growing and that he only had 25 members. Spurgeon looked at him and said, “25 people are a lot. You have many accounts to render for.”

That’s the problem with us in Nigeria. We are too bothered about quantity whereas everyone is an eternity. What we do with an individual goes far. God does not see crowds but individuals. God knows us by names.

When I come to the pulpit, I am more concerned about each soul, not the crowd. When they disperse, they go out as individuals. Why should I see people as crowd? Why should I see them as one of the masses? Everyone counts because Jesus did not die for the crowd but for individuals. When you see Jesus, you see only yourself in His eyes.

Are you saying crowd is not important?

Yes because God deals with individuals, not crowd. After people disperse, they return home to deal with their issues as individuals.

But some church leaders feel the more people they have, the better for viability?

I remember a story I once heard that I will never forget. One man was fishing and a rich man passed by. The rich man said get back to fishing and the guy said for what? The rich man said to get a bigger boat and then the guy said for what? The rich man said to enjoy yourself and the guy said, ‘what do you think I am doing now? I’m enjoying myself.’

I think it is blasphemous for a man of God to focus on money and think money is in the crowd. Jesus said we cannot serve God and Mammon. In politics, you can do that as well as economy. But in the things of God, money is nothing.

What do you want to use the money for? To buy tickets and travel? To buy private jets?To buy cars and houses? No, you will get all of these and then die. Jesus looked at the crowd and had compassion on them, not the offering in their pockets.

You cannot be popular with these views?

Why should I be popular? Popularity has nothing to do with purpose. The man who wins Man of the Year in 2015 will not win it in 2016. Messi has won the world footballer for four years but he won’t always win.

So, nothing is really so big or much in this world. You will eventually leave one day and nothing will count again.

Do you agree with those who say the problem with Nigeria is the church?

I agree with them partially because we don’t have the whole of Nigeria under our constituency. But the few we have in churches, what are we doing with them? The world will always go crazy but the church should be the finest part of the society.

We must show the way to the immoral, devilish people. People should have a loftier view of life, which is where we are missing it.

Why are you not into branches?

Someone is in Lagos and another is in Kaduna, why should I come and dominate you? Why don’t I strengthen you to do a better job? Jesus said we are the branches and He is the vine. He used that word for individuals, not the church.

When people are doing well in an area, you let them do a better job. Why should you go there and get them out? It is not a jungle. Why should I reinvent the wheel? I tell people that one church in one city doing well is not as good as all churches doing well.

Have you been tempted to consider opening branches?

Even if I do that, someone else will be there and I won’t control him. Paul established churches and never stayed with them. He handed them over to those on grounds.

You see the problem with us in Nigeria is we have too many churches without quality leadership. That gives room for mediocrity. We just have the desire to open branches without mature people to handle them. The pastors get there and reproduce their mediocrity and immaturity at a higher level.

You cannot mass produce maturity. It has to be one-by-one and one-on-one.

Have people told you the church is crawling with just one centre in 20 years?

I am not here to impress or please anybody. I am a Shepherd under Jesus. I am just one of the many; I don’t have this messianic complex. The whole world is not my mission field. I have my own small portion to look after.

To think I must affect the whole world means I am crazy. I am not Jesus Christ. I will only do the bit I can do and get out. I am not too bothered about legacies. I am called to follow Jesus. Legacy is a language of the world. I don’t need monuments after I am gone.

Heaven is keeping records. Our rewards are in heaven. Whatever we do here do not disappear. Whether we are acknowledged or not does not matter. God will open a record one day in heaven.

People have been bothered about transparency and accountability in church. What is the system in place here?

This is because people are scared. I believe people should check what they do in churches before they put their heads there. For example, in this church, we don’t raise money. When we were building, we never had a building fund or envelope. People just gave as they saw the work going on. We believe God for everything and just pray for provisions.

Do you open the books to members?

That is never a problem. We do once in a while but people are free to demand to see the books anytime. But I also don’t believe to put everything in the open where you go around you should be telling what you have and what you are doing.

If you look at Jesus, there was complete confidence in Him. His disciples never questioned His lifestyles with money because He was open. I have never asked any member for money since we started.

I don’t raise money in this church at all. You begin to question people when you don’t trust the leadership. The more people are mature, the better for the church. Your wife will not question you if the family finance is doing well. It is only when things are bad that they ask questions.

We don’t push for money and so it is difficult for people to question us. I am not saying we don’t make mistakes or we are perfect but even in our mistakes, people see our sincerity.

  • Motailatu empowers women at 52

    Motailatu empowers women at 52

Hundreds of women last week benefitted from an empowerment scheme by the Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW) in commemoration of its 52nd anniversary.

Items such as fridges, grinding machines, sewing machines, gas cookers and food items were distributed freely to the women, most of whom are less-privileged.

Founded on 14th June, 1964 the celebration coincidentally fell on the same the General Evangelist of the church, Elder Professor Joseph Otubu emerged vice president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The weeklong programme commenced with a women’s conference which featured seminars on parenting, submission and home management.

The women wing of the church then elected new officers to manage its affairs.

The conference, presided over by the Prelate and Supreme Head of MCCSW, His Most Eminence, Baba Aladura, Elder (Dr) Israel Akinadewo, also witnessed the anointing of deserving clerics into the body of Prophets and Prophetesses as well as ordination of others into various positions in the church.

The Baba Aladura enjoined members never to allow things of the world to take them away from Christ.

He challenged them to always be orderly, knowing that Motailatu means orderliness.

Apostle General Jehoshaphat Akinadewo delivered a sermon to round off the conference on “Christians and the unending endurance during temptations”.

He stressed that irrespective of the situations Christian find ourselves, they must guide against falling into temptations that would lead them into doing ungodly things.

The church also created five additional Districts for administrative conveniences.

The General Secretary, Special Apostle Samuel Adekoya announced the 2017 conference will hold in Abuja.

He hinted that more empowerment initiatives, including scholarship will be given to the less privileged.

Otubu thanked the gathering for their prayers and support during his emergence as vice president of CAN.

He pledged not to fail the church and the Aladura church movement.
