    LOVE…THE MOST EXCELLENT WAY (3)

We are in dangerous times; a perilous time indeed where lawlessness abounds and the love of many are growing cold. In perilous times men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. All these we have in our society today and even worse things are happening.

So many people are compromising their faith in Jesus in a bid to meet their wants and needs and by so doing their love for God is cold. God sees and knows our works. The warning came to the seven churches in the book of revelation about who they were. I want to use these 7 churches to represent different kinds of people, families, fellowships, ministries, churches and nations. See where you belong on this table and begin to pray to God for repentance, restoration and faithfulness…

  • Aladura churches rebrand for impact

Aladura assemblies under the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) have commenced retraining of leaders and pastors to change the negative perceptions about them.

The training, according to the Chairman OAIC, FCT Superintendent Senior Apostle Michael Osamor, is aimed at changing myths and orthodox practices giving the churches bad image.

OAIC comprises 57 different churches such as Christ Holy Church Int’l; Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim; Covenant Celestial Church of Christ; Celestial Church of Christ; Cherubim and Seraphim Church Movement; Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW), among others.

Osamor, at one-day leadership training in Abuja, explained most of the misconceptions are due to ignorance and the many bad eggs in the fold.

A lot of Christians due to lack of understand believe that that they do not truly teach Christ, when actually they teach the undiluted word of God.

He said: “A lot of people especially Christians look down on our church believing it to be a church for poor, illiterate people.

“Some of them go as far saying that we are not Christians; that we are not teaching Christ but if you come closer to us and spend the time to look at what we are doing, you will find out that indeed we are teaching Christ.

“We may not flavour it to make it sweet for people, to make it convenient; Christianity is not about convenience.

“It is about teaching the undiluted word of God and by being his disciples, by absorbing and being empowered by what Christ said He was going to leave a comforter with us, which is the Holy Spirit to guide, teach and direct everything we do.

“So our way of life is guided and directed by the tenets of the teaching of Christ.”

He added: “Part of the way we are going to go about improving the perception of people is by being a bit more structured by teaching our church leaders to go back to their own churches to be able to portray us in better light.

“Some little things that we do that people may fault us for, like visioning, visioning is not bad.

“What we are doing is to mitigate those areas and retrain the bad eggs because a lot of them it is just a matter of how they present their messages.

“A lot of people are scared of going to OAIC churches because they are afraid that once they come in, they will reveal all their innermost secrets.

“Some other organised churches also see such visions but the way it is handled by the pastors is different and does not scare people away.

“Those are the kind of things that we are going to be learning over a period of time. We are going to be having one of such trainings ones at least every quarter.

“Other Christians after now should expect that the OAIC churches will be able to mitigate some of those negative things they think that they know about us.

“We will learn how to promote those positive things about us because most of these Christians and non Christians come to us at nights for special prayers because they know that our prayers and way of life is effective.”

  • Cleric: Only God can kill corruption in Nigeria

A cleric, Pastor Joseph Omene, has stated that only God can redeem the nation from the forces of corruption.

He told our correspondent that corruption is a spiritual disease that only the word of God can heal.

Much as he appreciated the many laudable anti-corruption measures by the current administration, Omene insisted that there will never be a corrupt-free Nigeria until God steps in.

He said: “Only God can fight corruption. Corruption cannot fight corruption. It takes the Spirit of God to put corruption in its place.

“The change we are talking about cannot come from anybody but God. God is sending His Spirit to deal with corrupt politicians, corrupt civil servants and corrupt businessmen and women.”

Omene, who heads The God of Armour Ministries Mushin Lagos, urged gospel ministers to intensify the message of salvation to save the nation from the evils of corruption.

Only the word of God, he maintained, has what it takes to “fix corruption, which is in the human blood.”

He said the ministry will soon come up with a CD titled The downfall of corruption, which will be circulated in government offices, institutions and public places.

The CD, Omene hinted, will contain prayer points and bible verses against the evils and consequences of corruption as well as the way out.

  • Unveiling the gateways to financial dominion! (2)

It is important to recognise that the returns on our givings are not only limited to financial blessings but other fringe benefits that money cannot buy. We understand from scriptures that when the Israelites entered into a covenant to serve the Lord, which they proved through their sacrifices, He gave them rest round about (2 Chronicles 15:15).

What, then, are the fringe benefits of the giving covenant?

    • It averts curses: Curses are real and there are many victims of generational curses in the world today. We saw from scriptures that Noah reared an altar of sacrifice and God averted the curse upon humanity. The Bible says: And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease (Genesis 8:20-22).

Furthermore, as a result of David’s sin, God plagued the Israelites. However, when David offered sacrifice to God, the Bible says: So the Lord was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel (2 Samuel 24:24-25).

If God averted the curse that He proclaimed through the altar of sacrifice, any other curse working against any destiny can be cheaply averted through the covenant of giving and receiving, which include sacrifice (Malachi 3:6).

    • It engenders divine health: Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness (Psalms 41:1-3).

Anytime we give to the needy, we are giving to the Lord and servicing His interest. It is written: He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again (Proverbs 19:17; see also Matthew 25:40-41).

Moreover, as we minister to the needy, God delights in adding more years to us, on the earth. This is because true givers are not permitted to be tormented by sickness. For instance, John D Rockefeller was a diehard tither and an unusual liberal soul in promoting God’s Kingdom. At a time, he was afflicted with cancer and the doctors said he would not live to see his 52nd birthday. He was a great financier, so he had enough money to explore any kind of medical assistance but his case was closed medically. Then he gave 50% of all his stakes, in terms of finance, to the needy. Thus, God added to him forty years more.

We must understand that life is about ministering to the needs of others around us as ‘engraced’ by God. Money cannot buy health but giving secures and insures our health against satanic assaults.

    • It engenders divine protection: As God remembers our offerings, He stands to defend us. As it is written: The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion; Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice (Psalms 20:1-3).

The giving covenant invokes God’s blessings on our lives, which makes us indestructible. For instance, every plan to destroy Joseph failed because the blessings of his father prevailed on his life. Likewise, when God pronounces us blessed, the assaults of the wicked cannot prevail on our lives. No wonder the Bible says: The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish (Psalms 112:10; see also Genesis 49:26).

When we engage in covenant practice, our protection is as sure as eternity. Moreover, every covenant practitioner has an impregnable wall of fire around him that the devil and his agents cannot break through (Job 1:9-10, 22:23-25).

    • It engenders fruitfulness: The covenant of giving and receiving terminates barrenness and grants us access to supernatural fruitfulness. Abraham and Sarah in their usual liberality entertained angels unaware. As a result, God terminated their shame and blessed them with Isaac, even in their old age. Also, the Shunammite woman and her husband ministered to Elisha and God blessed them with a son in return (Genesis 18:1-10; 2 Kings 4:8-17; Psalms 113:9).
    • It engenders favour: We understand from scriptures that when Solomon reared an altar of sacrifice to God, He appeared to him (Solomon) in a dream of the night and said: …Ask what I shall give thee (1 Kings 3:5).

Solomon asked for wisdom and God granted him more than he asked for. The giving covenant offers us an open cheque to secure God’s favour in our affairs (1 Kings 3:3-5, 13; Psalms 45:12)

In conclusion, Kingdom promotion investment is our covenant launching pad into realms of financial dominion. This is because our givings qualify us for unusual attention with God. We must, therefore, stop thinking about meeting our family and personal needs alone. Rather, we must start thinking the Kingdom, humanity and impacting our world. As we do so, everything challenging our Christian testimony shall be terminated in Jesus’ name! Remain ever blessed!

Are you born again? Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord. If you haven’t, you can say this prayer and you will be born again: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • ‘How families can survive meltdown’

    ‘How families can survive meltdown’

Leading Christian marriage counsellor, Pastor Bisi Adewale, spoke with Sunday Oguntola on the challenges facing families based on the economic meltdown and how they can navigate the storms

How is the economic crunch affecting families?

This is not the best of times for families at all. Many parents cannot meet obligations like school fees. Many wives are leaving their matrimonial homes. I know a particular pastor whose wife just left with their five children.

According to her, the man cannot meet her needs. A sister also left her husband of less than one year, insisting he is not manly enough.

This crunch is really hitting families. It is making women not to respect their husbands like before. It is giving more rooms for infidelity. Some women who are unstable are falling into the hands of those with the means. So, it is a hard time really and families are pressed hard.

What else have you observed in your counseling sessions?

We have observed that many couples fight more these days. You know financial pressure is a huge challenge that only a few women can cope with. Many men are becoming more violent and irritable because they cannot meet needs.

A woman told me that anytime she opens milk, her husband is always saying, ‘don’t take too much’; ‘why are you eating three meals’. It is becoming a serious issue for many families. Expenses are increasing while incomes are shrinking. Someone told me he has just taken a 40 percent pay cut. He is likely to vent his anger on the wife if care is not taken.

This economic downturn is putting pressure on families. We have more counseling sessions on money issues and we often end up in stalemates because most wives refuse to budge. A lot of men are becoming insecure and violent. Wife battery is increasing though we cannot exonerate the culprits. So, it is a whole lot of chain reactions that we are witnessing.

So, what should families be doing at a time like this?

I need to say that we have been wasteful as a nation with families. Government has its blames but an individual family overspends than its incomes. Last week, I was in a town and I saw parties everywhere. All private and public school premises were hired. Everywhere was jam packed with people.

I saw billboards announcing burial activities of their parents. I don’t know how we got there. Instead of husband and wife to fight, they need to sit down and reconsider their budgeting plans. We buy more on impulse in Africa and this must stop. Families need to learn the four Ms of Money….

    … Which are?

The first M is making money. People need to learn how to make more money. There is something called moonlight income. Most people close by 4 or 5pm and gossip away till nightfall. This is the time to consider what else to do to make money after close of work.

People must think of what else to do. Cuba has not been able to import since 1968 and so they looked inwards. You see them still driving old model vehicles. A lot of them learnt how to repair their vehicles. This is the time to cut costs and increase incomes for families. Instead of lambasting government on social media, we need to think of how to make money.

The second M is maturity. We lack financial maturity in this part of the world. We buy shoes for N75, 000 and pay for nine months. Yet, the salary is just N50, 000. By the time you pay up, the shoe is already worn out. We hold remembrance services that are needless.

Maybe God created this scenario so that we can learn. We buy to impress and show up. Nobody is impressed by whatever you buy; only your pocket is suppressed. We must read books on money and attend seminar on finances to gain intelligence.

The third M is managing it. Money management in marriage is needful. One of the greatest keys to managing money is saving. An average worker is broke before the next pay day. We must develop saving culture out of financial intelligence.

As a Christian, you pay God first, then yourself. You leave a order for a percentage to save, no matter what.  The last M is maximizing money. Money is our blood and sweat. If you waste it, you waste your blood and sweat. There must be projects your saving is committed to. If there is no project, there is no progress.  Families must sit down and get this sorted out.

What are other practical steps to consider?

I will say wives must be patient with their husbands while men too should strive harder. Families must cry to God for ideas and intervention. Instead of fighting, let us pray together. Those who sleep around should stop because it is wasteful. If you have a friend working with you in the same neighbourhood, go for car sharing.

Let someone drives today and another person for the next week. Fuel consumption goes down and costs of maintenance too. We should learn to drop celebrity consciousness. Those who have jeeps should consider smaller vehicles for less cost. Save more and put it on a project such as real estate.

Every kobo you receive now is supposed to protect you in your old age. We are running money and marriage master class for 30 days. I just wrote Money Management in Marriage and Maximising Money in Marriage to address these issues.

  • Clerics, politicians eulogise retiring Akinde

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun; Catholic Bishop of Lagos Alfred Adewale Martins; Alake of Egbaland Oba Michael Gbadebo; Primate of the African Church Rev Emmanuel Udofia and Anglican Bishop of Lagos Rev Adebola Ademowo have poured encomiums on the retiring Archbishop of Lagos Mainland, Rev Adebayo Akinde.

They spoke glowingly of the preacher who took over the Diocese from the scratch and built it to a force within the Anglican Communion.

They spoke during the First Session of the Fourth Synod of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland Anglican Communion at All Saints Church, Yaba in Lagos.

The Synod with the theme: ’Thy Hand O Lord has Guided’ will be the last hosted by Akinde before he retires in August on attainment of 70 years.

Ademowo said the Diocese of Lagos Mainland has had a rapid growth through the team spirit and leadership of Akinde.

“Akinde is a man of impeccable human relationship and humble personality which has opened doors to his greatness. His life is a lesson to us all,” he stressed.

Rev Martins, who said he has known Akinde’s many sterling qualities, advocated for  ‘One Church, One Faith, One Christ’, as the theme for the upcoming collaboration between the Catholic and Anglican Church in Lagos.

He hoped the collaboration will provide infrastructure for the enhancement of the lives of Lagos residents.

According to Oba Gbadebo, Akinde’s best is yet to come.

Amosun added that Akinde has served the vineyard very well and charged the clergy there to rise to the challenges and serve the communities.

Akinde gave an emotional presidential address, where he noted that though it has not been the best times for the nation,

Nigerians must realise that God is at the helm of affairs regardless of who is in power.

“God rules in the affairs of men. Leaders are His agents for accomplishing His plans and purposes and we should therefore submit to His will.”

He charged the federal government to steer the nation to greater prosperity by adopting policies that will improve the standard of living of Nigerians and systematically confront and tackle corruption which has become a serious national malaise.

According to him: “Building a strong nation entails putting in place a system that extols the virtues of handwork, godliness, equity and unity amongst the various ethnic and religious components of the country.

“Measures should be put in place to check the excesses of religious extremists and ethic jingoists. Every section of the country should be made to feel sense of belonging.”

  • ‘Buhari should be a listening President’

‘Buhari should be a listening President’

A cleric, Prophet Lai Bamidele, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to be a listening leader to meet his goals for the mandate given to him by Nigerians.

Bamidele, who is General Overseer of Glorious End-Time Evangelical Church in Abule-Egba, Lagos, said though the President’s piety and integrity are not in doubt, he still come across as a man who hardly listens to wise counsel.

The cleric hinged his criticism on the fallout of the election of principal officers into the National Assembly, which he said was fraught with betrayal against the decision of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“It was not right then for the President to have quickly reacted that ‘we will work with the newly elected leaders of the National Assembly’, as this has sown a seed of discord in the party that brought him to power.

“For sure, the emergence of Saraki was on a wrong footing and any house built on mere sand will surely collapse,” he stressed.

The cleric advised the Senate President Bukola Saraki to vacate the office in his own interest as what he foresaw for him as Senate President, “is not palatable.”

Bamidele also condemned Senators escorting “an accused Senate President to answer charges at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, for charges that do not concern the.”

  • Unveiling the gateways to financial dominion!

We discover from scriptures that covenant practice is the platform for empowerment into realms of financial fortune. That is, God empowers us for wealth on the basis of His covenant. As it is written: But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day (Deuteronomy 8:18).

It is also important to note that God’s financial dominion plan anchors on the covenant of seed time and harvest, which connotes giving and receiving. This covenant is as reliable as the covenant of day and night. That means, as the day and night keep changing positions and the sun and moon continue to rule the day and night, this covenant remains in force (Psalms 89:34; Jeremiah 33:20-21, 25-26; Philippians 4:15).

As we all know, a covenant is a deal enacted by God based on well-defined terms and sealed with an oath, committing God’s integrity to make good His promise. God is simply saying, “I have these provisions for you and if you are interested, these are the conditions to meet. As you meet the conditions, you have committed my integrity to perform. Here are my instructions if you are interested in becoming a financial giant, which is your heritage in redemption.” That is why we call the Bible Old and New Testaments which means Old and New Covenants (Job 22:21-26; 2 Corinthians 8:9; Revelation 5:12).

However, for every provision in redemption, God has set up conditions that commit Him for delivery. Therefore, we can only commit God on His terms, not ours.

    What are His terms?

The covenant of financial fortune demands that we engage in the mystery of consistent tithing. This is because tithing brings us under an open heaven that we will not have enough room to contain. It is written:

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10-11).

Until we give God His tenth, we will never have our needs met. Any believer who is not a tither will end up a beggar; for the blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22; see also Deuteronomy 28:1-3; Isaiah 55:8-9; Zechariah 5:3-4).

Also, this covenant demands that we minister to the needy around us as engraced by God. The Bible says: He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. (Proverbs 28:27; see also Proverbs 19:17).

Job became the richest man in his days by taking advantage of the covenant of giving and receiving, and ministering to the needy (Job 29:4-181 Timothy 6:17-19).

Let’s recognise that we either engage the covenant of abundance or we are not candidates for God’s financial fortune plan. This is because it is obeying God’s commandments that puts us in command of His blessings. We must, therefore, take fast hold of instructions on any subject of interest to us because that is our guarantee for taking delivery of such provisions. God’s plans are authentic and His purposes are established in heaven forever. All we need is to position ourselves through obedience, thereby taking delivery of our portion (Genesis 12:1-3; Deuteronomy 5:32-33; 1 Samuel 15:22; Job 36:11; Proverbs 4:11-13).

One great mystery behind financial fortune is having Kingdom advancement dreams. For the financial giant in us to come alive, we must be big-time Kingdom dreamers. Without a Kingdom dream, we are not candidates for financial fortune. This is because God’s financial resources are primarily entrusted to promote His Kingdom. As it is written: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).

The Bible records that the fortune Israel encountered in Egypt was for the purpose of building the tabernacle in the wilderness. As they used their resources to build the tabernacle, God began to multiply their gold supernaturally. However, when they ignored God’s Kingdom, they experienced financial stress. We must recognise that Kingdom wealth is an entrustment, not an achievement. That is, it is entrusted to people God can trust to fulfil His purpose with it. It is written: If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? (Luke 16:11; see also Exodus 35:4-5, 16, 22; Haggai 1:5-11)

When we identify a cause in the Kingdom and invest in it with delight, we access God’s favour which makes us triumphant where others struggle. Therefore, the bigger our Kingdom dreams, the larger the coast of our financial fortune.

Remember the story of the elephant that consumes 140 pounds of straws a day and discharges 100 pounds of manure per day. To arrive at the elephant phase of financial fortune, you must have a discharge avenue to match. God does not tempt anybody with evil, He knows how much your heart is willing to discharge. As such, He will not load you with more blessings than you can discharge (Luke 12:48; 2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

However, it is important for us to understand that God is the giver of Kingdom dreams and accepting Jesus as our Lord, and is the first step to accessing God’s plan and purposes for our lives. This is what being born again is all about. Are you born again? If you haven’t given your life to Jesus Christ, you can say this prayer and you will be born again: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • Otubu: Why I can’t stop building churches

Otubu: Why I can’t stop building churches

On Monday, April 11, the General Evangelist of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW), Elder Professor Joseph Otubu, decided to build yet another church for the Lord.

Exactly 53 days after, a sparkling 500-seater ultra-modern church christened Eternal Glory Parish was commissioned in Kukwaba District, Abuja to coincide with his 70th birthday.

The renowned gynecologist told guests at the dedication that building churches has become an addiction he cannot help.

“I don’t know what is wrong with me but I can’t just stop building for God,” he started to a loud applause.

“I guess it is an addiction that will never go away. No matter where I am or what I do, I don’t find satisfaction until I have done something for God.”

He said no price was too high to pay to make God happy, saying his passion remained to continue building across all the major cities of the nation.

Otubu, who donated a parish in Surulere, Lagos last November to the church, said: “It is a token to remind God that I am grateful for His faithfulness over the years.”

The Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) candidate for the presidential election of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said it was a habit he inherited from his father, the late Baba Aladura of Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim Church (ESOCSC), Godfrey Otubu.

He recalled how his father built many churches for ESOCSC across the nation and paid the tuition of uncountable indigent students.

“I learnt well from him and the next place I will like to build for God is the city of Onitsha,” he stated.

Showing his nuclear family, Otubu dispelled rumour that he is a polygamous stating he has been married only to one wife, Josephine since February 4, 1979 with two sons.

“I don’t have a concubine or another wife anywhere else. This is the only woman I have known all my life,” he stressed.

Declaring he has decided to live his rest for God and humanity, Otubu said: “I have told my children I have nothing to leave for them when I am gone.

“All they can hope to get from me are just books in the library.”

His friend of many years and former Director Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NACA), Dr Harold Demuren, praised Otubu for being selfless.

He revealed that plans had been concluded for the celebrator and his immediate family to be in Jerusalem for an all-expense paid vacation.

“We had done everything until Joseph (Otubu) said he will prefer to celebrate his 70th with a church dedication back home.

“I found that humbling and touching,” he stated to wide applause.

The Baba Aladura of MCCSW, Dr Israel Akinadewo, praised Otubu for his selflessness.

He disclosed that despite all the cathedrals he has built for God, the celebrator does not have a house of his own.
