  • Poll: The will of Nigerians must prevail – U.S

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, James Eintwistle, on Sunday said the expectation of America in the presidential election is for the will of Nigerians to prevail.

He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for adopting card readers to protect the integrity of the ballot.

He said the U.S might also learn from Nigeria by using card readers in its future poll.

Eintwistle, who made his views known in a short interactive session with journalists at the National Collation Centre in Abuja, said he was impressed by the turn out of Nigerians for the presidential and National Assembly Elections.

He said: “I was extremely impressed. Yesterday, I went around to a number of places in the FCT. Every place I went, I was impressed by the patience and dedication of the Nigerian voters.

“The fact that they were willing to stand in line for hours and hours, in the heat and in the sun so that they can exercise their democratic rights to vote, personally, I found that inspirational.

“My congratulations to the Nigerian voters. They have reminded us all about what a beautiful thing democracy is.”

Responding to a question, the Ambassador said: “The expectation of my government is that the Nigerian people will win. And by that, I mean they will get what they want which is a transparent, credible and non-violent election.

“And we look forward to working with whatever government emerges from this election.”

On issues raised by the All Progressives Congress on the conduct of the poll, he said:”The APC can speak for itself. I have no comment on any political statement so far.”

Eintwistle, however, singled out the deployment of card readers as a unique high technology which had assisted in protecting the sanctity of the ballot process.

He added: “I was very impressed about the decision by INEC to use technology in this election.

“I will tell you something, the PVCs are very hi-tech. They are more hi-tech than my voter card from the State of Virginia in the U.S.

“My voter card does not have my biometric, it does not have my fingerprint. So I was very impressed by the decision to go hi-tech because hi-tech, I think, gives the process more integrity.

On the failure of card readers in some states, Eintwistle said INEC should look at what went wrong and correct the lapses.

  • INEC not under pressure to declare poll inconclusive, says Jega

INEC not under pressure to declare poll inconclusive, says Jega

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega on Sunday  said the agency  was not under pressure to declare the results of Saturday’s  Presidential and National Assembly elections inconclusive.
He also said the collation and release of the results  of the elections will begin on Monday.
Jega said the results from two states were received Sunday night although reports indicated that the ongoing collation process had reached 80 per cent and 90 per cent in some states.
He however dismissed claims by the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council that the party was leading in 23 states.
Jega, who made the submissions, at a briefing in Abuja on the status of the outcome of Saturday’s elections, said contrary to insinuations, the Card Readers worked in most of the nation’s 150,000 Polling Units.
He said failure of Card Readers was recorded in 374 Polling Units out of 150,000 in the country.
“We are not under any pressure to declare elections inconclusive. I wonder who will be interested in declaring inconclusive election. I want to believe that candidates would have wanted to be declared winners and not to have an election being declared inconclusive. Really, there is no truth whatsoever to that. “
The INEC chairman said the collation and release of results would begin today(Monday).
He said only results of two states were ready as at press time.

  • Ondo: Tension over alleged plan to manipulate election results

There is anxiety in Ondo State over the delay on the final announcement of result of the last saturday election result by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Segun Agbaje.

Although some returning officers had announced the results in some senatorial districts, but that of Ondo central where Governor Olusegun Mimiko hails from has not been announced or brought to the collation centre.

Journalists who had besieged the collation centre at St Peter’s College, Akure since around 8.00 a.m had to leave, while no action was going on at INEC office, Alagbaka as at press time.

Because of the new technology results in the Ondo Central had been on the social media in favour of one of the political parties.

However, sources said the results in the central district were allegedly been doctored by somewhere in Akure which forced the state chairman of the APC to go on air, warning against such manipulation.

Some Results for the Presidential and National Assembly elections across the 18 local government areas of Ondo State have been trickling in.

The results released so far, showed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is currently leading in the state.

As at press time, many of the results from the ward levels have been collated in the various collating centres across the local governments.

Though, INEC returning officers are yet to announce the result for Akure South and North local governments but our correspondents who visited majority of the units during the voting reported that APC is lead in the majority of the polling units.

Meanwhile the Secretary to the Borno State Government Amb. Baba Jida told reporters at the collation center that the performance of the party at the Saturday’s presidential elections has exceeded the expectations of many, adding that the party is cruising to victory.

“In view of the constraints faced by Borno, we feel that the people have done well to exercise their right to vote. Under the circumstance that our people have found themselves, we have done very well.

“From what we have, the APC have approximately 95 per cent while the PDP have slightly 5 per cent. The turnout is not very good and it should be expected. By the time the result from southern Borno and that of Jere and MMC come in it may improve the figures we have. People are happy to participate in the election.

“The APC is cruising to landslide victory. We have done better than we thought. I am sure our opponents are struggling to get maybe just 25 per cent in Borno state but from the look of things, they are not likely to get more than 10 per cent,” Amb. Baba Jida said.

  • APC leaders, members protest election in Rivers

APC leaders, members protest election in Rivers

The leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State on Sunday  protested in Port Harcourt, presidential and National Assembly elections without result sheets, with the polls marred by violence and killings across the 23 local government areas of the state.

The protesters, who moved round Port Harcourt and later got to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Aba Road, called for fresh elections and transfer of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dame Gesila Khan, for allegedly taking sides with the leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Khan was also accused of releasing the original result sheets to the Rivers governorship candidate of the PDP, Chief Nyesom Wike, a former Minister of State for Education, and other leaders of the party, with colour photocopies given to the Electoral Officers across the 23 LGAs of the state, which they allegedly used to write fake results.

Khan, however, said: “It is a lie and cheap blackmail. It is not possible to hand over original result sheets to politicians, especially with the security numbers on them. They should concentrate on campaigning and allow me to do my job.”

Among the APC’s protesters were the Rivers governorship candidate of the party, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside; his running mate, Okorie Honourable Asita; Senator Magnus Abe; Chief Tony Okocha; Rivers commissioners; federal and state lawmakers, among other eminent personalities.

Peterside, his supporters and APC members maintained that they did not vote on Saturday.

The determined protesters ignored the heavy security on Aba Road, especially between Waterlines Bus Stop and GRA Junction, thereby moving to the gate of the INEC headquarters, near the corporate headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

  • ‘Voting’ enters second day in Otuoke’

‘Voting’ enters second day in Otuoke’

Electoral officers Sunday claimed that results in President Goodluck Jonathan’s unit were not announced on Saturday because voting was not concluded.

They claimed that voting would continue Sunday, but no queues were seen when our correspondent visited the Dame Patience Jonathan Square which had three polling units (17, 18 and 40).

Unit 39, Ward 13, where the president and his wife Patience voted, was deserted Sunday.

No result from the unit was pasted there.

Electoral officers who manned the president’s unit had changed location and were seen at the Square Sunday.

On Saturday, voting continued till about 8pm at the president’s unit, but no result was announced.

When the last person on the queue voted, the electoral officer announced that counting would begin, but a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) agent who gave her name as S. Otazi, complained that several people were yet to vote.

The electoral officer then stopped the counting and returned the ballot papers to the boxes.

At about 8.30pm, the electoral officer said the unit, in front of President Jonathan’s country home, was becoming unsafe and that they were relocating to a “safer place”.

She and other polling officials packed the voting materials and were driven away.

When our correspondent contacted Mrs. Otazi on phone by 10: 59pm on Saturday, she confirmed that results had not been announced.

She said: “You’re calling this night, you haven’t slept?” When asked if the result had been announced, she said: “It has not been announced”.

Asked if it could still be announced before midnight on Saturday, she said: “I don’t know. Thank you.”

An ad-hoc staff, when asked on phone at 11.49pm if the result had been announced, said: “I heard that there has been an announcement that voting continues tomorrow (yesterday).

“I understand they extended the voting because some people were ‘unable’ to vote. We’ll go back to the polling unit in the morning, we’ll be there,” he said.

Yesterday, no electoral officer was at the unit where the President voted. Other units nearby were empty in the morning when our correspondent checked them.

However, the electoral officers, made up mainly of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, later gathered at the Dame Patience Square.

Our correspondent spent about 30 minutes at the square but saw no one come to vote although ballot boxes were on display. There were no electoral observers present.

Two of the electoral officers approached our correspondent and sought to know who he was and what he was doing.

When told he was a journalist, the male officer said: “You can’t be here. There’s supposed to be restriction of movement. You’re only supposed to be here if you wish to vote. The result may not be announced here. Your presence here is making them uncomfortable.

“You had better leave before they begin to think you’re an agent of the opposition.”

The lady glared at our correspondent and narrowed her eyes to see what he was doing with his smartphone.

The electoral officers were still at the Dame Patience Jonathan Square at about 4pm when our correspondent left. Policemen were also there.

When contacted on phone, INEC’s spokesman in Bayelsa Mr. Timidi Wariowei, said he was not aware that results had not been announced in Otuoke.

He also started questioning our correspondent when told that electoral officers claimed that voting was still going on.

He said: “There were some polling units that election did not hold Saturday, and a few units where election is going on, but it’s not a continuation of Saturday.”

When told that electoral officers were still in Otuoke, he sounded agitated, saying: “You’re saying you didn’t see anybody voting, and you said election was going on. Please I don’t like this kind of story.” And he hung up.

A text message was sent asking him to confirm if results from the units in Otuoke had been announced, but Wariowei did not respond as at the time of filing this report.
