Coalition urges Sultan to intervene in Kano emirates’ crisis

A GROUP, the Renaissance Coalition and Kano-based civil society organisations have called on the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar,  to intervene in the ongoing crisis over the creation of four additional emirates in Kano State.

The coalition’s chairman, Abdulrahaman Baffa Yola, spoke with reporters in Kano yesterday over the creation of four additional emirates, namely, Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi.

He said: “We call on His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, being the leader of the Danfodio Caliphate, to denounce in strong terms the creation of additional emirates in Kano, which was done without consultation with major stakeholders and without following the due process.

“We call on all the elders in Kano State to dissociate themselves from these unpopular actions of the government directly or indirectly, secretly or in the open in relation to the creation of the so-called new emirates in the interest of peace and tranquility.”

But, Commissioner for Information, Youth and Culture Mallam Muhammad Garba described the group as sponsored elements, who were being used to destabilise peace and cause tension in the state.

According to him, “we are not surprised because these so-called civil society organisations are speaking out of ignorance.”
