OYO State primary school teachers yesterday began an indefinite strike over delay in payment of their salaries and others.
Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State wing, Comrade Samson Adedoyin said the strike became necessary due to the inability of the state government to meet the union’s demands.
NUT, had last week, issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the state government to settle the backlogs of salaries owed its members.
The union gave the state government 72 hours’ notice.
It warned that its members would go on indefinite strike, if the situation was not reversed.
The NUT complained over non-implementation of the approval and accompanying promotion benefits to the primary school teachers by the state Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC).
Others are: delay in payment of salary to primary school teachers, delay in the promotion of grade level 14 to 15, withholding of 2018 leave grants and delay in the clearance of teachers allegedly accused of involvement in illegal promotions.

It was, however, gathered that the state government invited the union leaders to a parley on May 15, but no deal was reached.
The NUT acknowledged that its leadership met with the state Head of Service and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, during which both government functionaries made passionate appeal to them to shelve the proposed strike.
The union, however, stated that the state government’s appeal could not change anything because none of their demands was met.
Pupils in Ibadan, the state capital, were sent out yesterday by the teachers in conformity with the industrial action.
Most of the gates of the schools were also shut against the pupils.
