A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ekiti State, Emmanuel Ohore, has initiated a ‘School-at-Home’ project at Are-Ekiti in Ifelodun/Irepodun Local Government.

This, he said, is to mitigate effects of school closure, particularly on children within his Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).

Ohore, a Banking and Finance graduate from the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, said the initiative was born out of the need to keep the children engaged despite the COVID-19 pandemic that has forced them to stay at home.

He said: “Never before have so many children been out of school at the same time, having their education disrupted in this manner. The ‘School at Home’ is my little way of helping the children continue to learn at home.

“’School at home’ is an avenue to engage the children during this lockdown. My focus is on primary school pupils, tutoring them in basic literacy and numeracy (English language and Mathematics), in line with Ekiti State’s school curriculum.

“After arriving at a home, I introduce myself as a corps member and ask the parents if they are willing to allow their children be taught for a couple of hours. Once they accept, I request for the children’s school books in English and Mathematics and proceed to teach them. I give them assignments to be reviewed when I return a few days later.

“The reception has been awesome. The initiative is really getting the children engaged academically and it is at no cost to the parents. So far, I have been able to impact over 50 children in the community. This initiative will continue until the children return to their  schools.”
