Lagos donates to orphanages

Lagos State government has donated gifts and food items to orphanages and children centres in commemoration of this year’s Children’s Day.

Youth and Social Development Commissioner Segun Dawodu said the gesture was a way of identifying with children, especially those at centres, who might not be remembered.

Dawodu, who monitored the presentation of items to representatives of the beneficiaries at the Alausa Secretariat in Ikeja, said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, despite other responsibilities, still approval for the ministry to celebrate Children’s Day.

The commissioner assured the children that the government means well for them and has not forgotten them.

Representative of Little Saints Orphanage, Ilupeju, Palmgroove, Ruth Nnamdi, described the gesture as an act of love and kindness that would for long be remembered and appreciated by the children.

The Matron of K. Olubukola Fowowe Memorial Children Centre, Oke-Ira, Ogba, Mrs. Titilola Omole, said the children would feel encouraged that the government cared for them and remembered them.

“When we get to our centre, we will explain to the children where the items came from so they can always know that the government remembers them.”

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Street Child Care and Welfare Initiative, has distributed 1,400 food packs to the Destitute Home in Oko-Baba, Ebute-Metta.

Project Manager Comfort Alli-Babalola said the gesture was to identify with the children.

Alli-Babalola, represented by the Welfare Officer, Mrs. Abdulsalam Folake-Ramat, said the NGO was well known around Alagomeji, Yaba, and other parts of Lagos State as a welfarist body. She added that the NGO was established in 2008 by a French national, Vincent Parure.

Chairman and Secretary of the Home Sarki Ahmed Gaya and Mohammed Baba thanked the donor for the gesture, praying God for continued provision for it.
