Councils’ secretaries unite for grassroots development

Scribe 57, an association of secretaries of local government areas (LGAs) and local council development areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State, has pledged to support government’s development efforts.

Chairman of the councils’ secretaries, Mr. Olalekan Bakare, who spoke after its meeting at the Yaba LCDA Secretariat, said the group was proud that Lagos was setting the pace for others to emulate.

Bakare added that Lagos State was committed to good governance at the grassroots, noting that councils’ secretaries would do everything possible to deliver on their responsibilities.

He said the scribes were convening their first meeting for the year, adding that members had been busy to ensure they deliver on the plan of action espoused by council chairmen.

According to him, there must be the synergy between council chairmen and secretaries for good governance to subsist at the grassroots.

He said: “We are in high spirit at the 57 councils and have come together to discuss issues of common interest. We are particularly proud because Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration is making great strides.

“The governor is committed, our council chairmen are committed and the secretaries are also committed to ensure that there is good governance at the grassroots. We are going to ensure that we performed our duties with dedication for the state to maintain its lead.

“You can see that from the recent screening of commissioner designates, Lagos is not leaving anything unattended to. Those screened are quality hands that had been tested. So, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is moving forward in provisions of good governance for the people.”

The host scribe from Yaba LCDA, Mr. Adetayo Oyemade, said the secretaries were part of the greater Lagos, noting that they were saddled with the responsibilities of ensuring that the executive and legislature work in harmony.

“We coordinate the legislature and executive. So, our job is to ensure that there is good governance at the grassroots. We are the nucleus of government’s working engine room.

“The secretaries cannot afford to lag behind in their duties. They must discharge their task judiciously and that is what we have been doing.”
