MOTORISTS who turned on Monday at the Ikoyi/Link bridge without their E-tag where either turned back or asked to pay a fine of N1000 to proceed on the journey by officers of the Lekki Concession company (LCC) . The Lagos State Government also made good its threat of insisting on cashless payment on the bridge, these observers say drastically reduced traffic on the axis.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Frederick Oladeinde said the full implementation of the policy is necessary.

Government had last year announced it would go cashless on toll payments at the Lekki/Ikoyi toll plaza effective from January 1 due to the excessive delays experienced along the corridor with cash payment, however, the cashless payment, commenced partially on January 2, 2020.

Oladeinde also warned against all corrupt practices such as photocopying payment vouchers for multiple usages or presenting fake e-payment devices.

He said: “The state government would not hesitate to apply the law on any motorist who attempts to frustrate its  efforts at improving traffic situation along the Lekki/Ikoyi corridor.

He also said that the cashless toll initiative has the objective of removing bottlenecks at the toll gates and impacting positively on the reduction of traffic queue lengths and journey time for Lagosians.

The Nation was also on hand to monitor the exercise and found out that over 90 per cent of motorists on the axis complied but those who failed to comply were fined N1,000.00 and their vehicles towed to prevent obstruction and free movement of vehicle.

Speaking with the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), Head, Commercial & Corporate Media, Veronica Jacobs  she commended the exercise and level of compliance. According to her, the policy was well taken and the exercise was free of obstructions except for 2 or 3 people who were turned back and fined for contravening the Lagos Traffic law.
