Cancel Saturday election, reschedule it for next Saturday, Obasanjo tells Buhari

  • … Alleges compromise by INEC officials

By Ernest Nwokolo, Abeokuta

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to cancel all elections that did not not pass the credibility and transparency test in respect of the Saturday Presidential and National Assembly election to douse the tension in the country.

Obasanjo urged President Buhari to reschedule such cancelled election along with areas where elections were disrupted for next Saturday, March 4, 2023 while the BVAS and Server officials should also be changed.

The elder statesman who made this known in release he personally, asked the President recommended that a Committee of INEC staff and representatives of the four major political parties with the Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association be constituted
to know which stations or polling units were manipulated as well as look into what must be done to have hitch-free elections next Saturday.

“Your Excellency, President Buhari Muhammadu, tension is building up and please let all elections that do not pass the credibility and transparency test be cancelled and be brought back with areas where elections were disrupted for next Saturday, March 4, 2023, and BVAS and Server officials be changed.

“To know which stations or polling units were manipulated, let a Committee of INEC staff and representatives of the four major political parties with the Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association look into what must be done to have hitch-free elections next Saturday. Mr. President, may your plan and hope for leaving a legacy of free, fair, transparent and credible election be realised. Mr. President, please don’t let anybody say to you that it does not matter or it is the problem of INEC.

“On no account should you be seen as part of the collusion or compromise. When the die is cast, it will be your problem as the Chief Executive of the nation. The Chairman of INEC may sneak out of the country or go back to his ivory tower. Your Excellency, thank you for hearing me out,” he stated.

The ex – president who noted that the
the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC)officials at operational level, have been allegedly compromised to sabotage the process and system, said even though the INEC chairman may claim ignorance, he cannot also fold his hands and do nothing when he knows that election process had been corrupted.

According to him, most of the results that are brought outside BVAS and Server are not true reflection of the will of Nigerians who have made their individual choice.

Below is the full text of the release.

2023 NIGERIA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

  • AN APPEAL FOR CAUTION AND RECTIFICATION

Nigerian Brothers and Sisters, greetings to you all.

I am constrained to speak at this point.
I crave the indulgence of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency General Muhammadu Buhari, to make this statement because I have had opportunity to keep him aware of what I know is happening and the danger looming ahead.

On many occasions in the past, I have not hesitated to point out lacuna in the action of the President and his government. But as far as the election issues are concerned, the President has proved beyond reasonable doubt that he will want to leave a legacy of free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

Until last Saturday night, February 25, 2023, the good and noble plan and preparation for the elections seemed to be going well. For the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a lot of money was spent to introduce Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and the Server for immediate transmission of results from polling units. It is no secret that INEC officials, at operational level, have been allegedly compromised to make what should have worked not to work and to revert to manual transmission of results which is manipulated and the results doctored. The Chairman of INEC may claim ignorance but he cannot fold his hands and do nothing when he knows that election process has been corrupted and most of the results that are brought outside BVAS and Server are not true reflection of the will of Nigerians who have made their individual choice. At this stage, we do not need wittingly or unwittingly to set this country on fire with the greed, irresponsibility and unpatriotic act of those who allegedly gave money to INEC officials for perversion and those who collected the blood money. Let me appeal to the Chairman of INEC, if his hands are clean, to save Nigeria from the looming danger and disaster which is just waiting to happen. If the Chairman can postpone elections four days to the election, he can do everything to rectify the errors of the last two days – no BVAS, no result to be acceptable; and no uploading through Server, no result to be acceptable.

Whereas, BVAS and Servers have been manipulated or rendered inactive, such results must be declared void and inadmissible for election declaration. Chairman INEC, I have thought that you would use this wonderful opportunity to mend your reputation and character for posterity.

Your Excellency, President Buhari Muhammadu, tension is building up and please let all elections that do not pass the credibility and transparency test be cancelled and be brought back with areas where elections were disrupted for next Saturday, March 4, 2023, and BVAS and Server officials be changed. To know which stations or polling units were manipulated, let a Committee of INEC staff and representatives of the four major political parties with the Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association look into what must be done to have hitch-free elections next Saturday. Mr. President, may your plan and hope for leaving a legacy of free, fair, transparent and credible election be realised. Mr. President, please don’t let anybody say to you that it does not matter or it is the problem of INEC. On no account should you be seen as part of the collusion or compromise. When the die is cast, it will be your problem as the Chief Executive of the nation. The Chairman of INEC may sneak out of the country or go back to his ivory tower. Your Excellency, thank you for hearing me out.

Compatriot Nigerians, please exercise patience until the wrong is righted. I strongly believe that nobody will toy with the future and fortune of Nigeria at this juncture.

Long live Nigeria in peace, security, stability and in the hope for greater future.

OLUSEGUN OBASANJO

‘Peter Obi not desperate to become Nigerian President’

By Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

The founder and vision bearer of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Emeka Emekesiri, Esq, has said that the Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (LP) Mr Peter Obi is not desperate to become the President of Nigeria.

He said the former Governor of Anambra State is rather on a mission to salvage Nigeria.

Emekesiri who was reacting to a statement on social media credited to Pa Ayo Adebanjo on the ongoing announcement of Presidential elections, said his group was not begging Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do the right thing.

He quoted Pa Adebanjo as saying that Nigeria had shown that they wanted Mr Peter Obi to be their President by voting for him.

He said, “I learnt Pa Adebanjo declared that if INEC dared to rig the election, that Nigerians should protest seriously for international community to intervene.

“I also learnt he told the powers that be that if they did not want an Igbo man to rule Nigeria, then the Igbo should be allowed to go and have their Biafra.

“Whether the statement was made by Pa Ayo Adebanjo or not, the truth is that the statement remains the truth. We are not begging INEC to do the right thing.

“Peter Obi is not desperate to become the President of Nigeria. He is on a mission to salvage Nigeria.

“The Igbo man can survive anywhere in the world. We have passed through fire, and it did not burn us, and through rivers and oceans and were not drowned.

“We leave our homeland to invest in and develop other regions of Nigeria showing that we believe in Nigeria but we are rejected.

“If Nigeria proves unsalvageable and irredeemable, we are not to blame. Onye a juru aju anaghi aju onwe ya (He that is rejected does not reject himself).”

Emekesiri added, “If they did not want Obi to rule Nigeria, they have rejected the Igbo in the final analysis and have no reason to stop them from ruling themselves as an independent nation by whatever name chosen to call themselves.

“We may revive our old Republic of Biafra or answer a new name, REPUBLIC OF LOWER NIGER, to include our brothers from the Middle Belt and South-South regions who believe in fairness, equity and justice.”

Dino mobilises agents to walk out on collation of presidential results

By Tony Akowe, Abuja

The agent of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at the National Collation Centre for the Presidential election, Senator Dino Melaye, is mobilising party agents to stage a walk out of the collation if the Independent National Electoral Commission fails to abide by their bidding.

Immediately after the Commission announced a temporary break to resume in one hour, Dino called some party agents to one side of the hall for a brief meeting.

He was heard telling them the commission has an agenda to execute and that they will insist on the projection of polling units results from the states before each result is announced.

He told them: “When we resume, before they announce any other state, we will all stand up and insist that they project the results on their portal. If they resume, we will all walk out and that will put the integrity of the whole process to question”.

However, he told reporters: “The electoral Act 2022 states that election results will be transmitted directly to the server. We found out that this has not been done because INEC failed in this regard.

“When I raised this issue today and supported by other party agents, the INEC Chairman vehemently evaded the issue. What section 47(3) emphasis is that where ever the BVAS failed, if they cannot get a replacement, elections should be cancelled in those areas. We have seen from the presentation of results from Ekiti yesterday that some places were cancelled as a result of bypassing the BVAS.

“The only way to detect that BVAS has been bypassed is for us to see the uploaded results. We insisted that the chairman should show us here and now the uploaded results state by state, just like they are projecting the results they are presenting. That is the only way to test the veracity abd authenticity of this results.

“If not, we are only here to endorse the fraud that has been done from unit to the ward to the state. We are not here to rubber stamp infractions and the anomalies that has been done.

“We are here to check them, but the INEC Chairman is not giving us the opportunity to question what they are doing, saying all has been done. What that mean is that we are here to rubber stamp. We are going to prove that we are not here to rubber stamp. We have no other country to call our own than this country.

“We are going t do everything humanly possible to make sure that the right thing is done. We have just met now and we are going to make a presentation by the time we resume. If they insist that they are not going to respond to us, then you will see the action we will take.

“But we want to tell you that we will not allow, having suffered pains in this country, having suffered hi hunger, killings, we will not allow a continuation of failure. We will ensure that the right thing is done.

“The INEC Chairman is putting his integrity on test. Nigerians are watching, the world is watching. Even the dead are watching to see what INEC will do. But the battle to make sure that only authentic results will be announced here today is a battle of no retreat, no surrender.”

Section 47(3) of the Electoral Act which he quoted to back up his claims states that “Where a smart card reader or any other technological device deployed for accreditation of voters fails to function in any unit and a fresh card reader or technological device is not deployed, the election in that unit shall be cancelled and another election shall be scheduled within 24 hours if the Commission is satisfied that the result of the election in that polling unit will substantially affect the final result of the whole election and declaration of a winner in the constituency concerned.”

Aggrieved voters hold NYSC members hostage in Delta

By Elo Edremoda, Warri

Three members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed as ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the rescheduled presidential and National Assembly (NASS) elections have been held hostage by disenfranchised voters in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta state.

The trio of Udon Stephanie, Igein Theresa and Adeleke Yetunde was deployed to Ward 4, unit 19 at Oki Street, Okere Road, Warri and were still being held as of 6.45p.m Sunday evening.

They were reportedly held after the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) malfunctioned, stalling the accreditation of voters at the unit.

It was gathered that the ad hoc staff arrived at the polling unit for the postponed election around 4 pm and were deserted by their Supervisory Polling Officer (SPO) after the hitch.

Angered by the development, the electorate who had waited endlessly in anticipation insisted they go nowhere until they exercise their right.

Adeleke while lamenting her ordeal, said: “The BVAS crashed when we were trying to reboot it. We called the RAC because they said it was a technology problem. They said they didn’t reconfigure it to read today (Sunday) because it was still reading yesterday (Saturday). So we became stuck as a result. Now they’re accusing me of collecting N50,000. I don’t know anyone here and I didn’t collect any money

“We are supposed to do the work yesterday but because no voting took place here, they moved the exercise to today. A lot of our colleagues pulled out and now I am regretting not pulling out”.

The two other ad-hoc staff, Udoh Stephanie and Theresa Igein, accused the Supervisory Polling Officer (SPO) of dumping them, as well as leaving them without security knowing fully the BVAS was not configured properly.

One of the community members however assured that no harm will come to the three officials.

The electoral officer, Kingsley Ogboe, who had been mum on all electoral issues regarding the exercise in Warri South, did not also make comments.

Our election viewing portal safe, not compromised-INEC

By Tony Akowe, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured its election viewing portal has not been compromised.

It stated results uploaded on its Election Viewing portal are safe.

The Commission also assured the portal has not been compromised as may have been speculated in some quarters.

It appealed to Nigerians to avoid statements and actions that can heat up the polity or promote disaffection towards the Commission.

In a statement its National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, the Commission said the problem being experienced in viewing the portal is a normal problem associated with upgrading a system.

He explained while the commission appreciate concern shown by Nigerians on the relative slow nature of the portal since the commencement of elections, technical staff of the commission are working to address the challenges.

The statement reads: “The Commission is aware of challenges with the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV). Unlike in off-season elections where the portal was used, it has been relatively slow and unsteady. The Commission regrets this setback, especially because of the importance of IReV in our results management process.

“The problem is totally due to technical hitches related to scaling up the IReV from a platform for managing off-season, State elections, to one for managing nationwide general elections. It is indeed not unusual for glitches to occur and be corrected in such situations.

“Consequently, the Commission wishes to assure Nigerians that the challenges are not due to any intrusion or sabotage of our systems, and that the IReV remains well-secured.

“Our technical team is working assiduously to solve all the outstanding problems, and users of the IReV would have noticed improvements since last night.

“We also wish to assure Nigerians that results from the Polling Units, copies of which were issued to political parties, are safe on both the BVAS and the IReV portal.

“These results cannot be tampered with and any discrepancy between them and the physical results used in collation will be thoroughly investigated and remediated, in line with Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022.

“While we fully appreciate the concerns of the public on this situation and welcome various suggestions that we have received from concerned Nigerians, it is important to avoid statements and actions that can heat up the polity at this time or promote disaffection towards the Commission.

“We take full responsibility for the problems and regret the distress that they have caused the candidates, political parties and the electorate.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos West senatorial candidate, Dr. Idiat Adebule, has delivered her Polling Unit 029, Iba, Ojo, Lagos State Fire to the party’s Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Adebule, who was declared winner in the unit for her senatorial election, also ensured she won the unit for the party’s House of Representatives’ candidate and Tinubu.

The former Lagos Deputy Governor completed the hat-trick in her unit with Tinubu winning the unit with 121 votes while Labour Party candidate Peter Obi got 120 votes.

Adebule has been consistent in delivering her unit for the party despite the fact that the area is being dominated by the people of the eastern region who are more politically-conscious than their Yoruba hosts.

She thanked the electorate and party faithful for the feat.

According to her, there is need for voters to participate more in the electoral system.

The Nation learnt that only 262 people voted out of 1,352 registered voters in the unit.

By Onimisi Alao, Yola

His home base is the Jiga Jiga A and B polling units of Banshika Ward in Hong Local Government area of Adamawa State where he was during the Presidential/National Assembly elections of Saturday.

At Jiga Jiga A unit, Labour Party’s Peter Obi polled 302 votes while the candidate of PDP Atiku Abubakar got 67 votes and APC’s Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu came third with 19 votes.

One dead as violence breaks out in Gombe Gov’s polling Unit

By Sola Shittu, Gombe

One person has been shot dead and another injured in a violent clash between political thugs at the polling Unit of Gombe Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

Yahaya, who voted at Yahaya Umaru polling Unit 010 Jekadafari lost the Presidential election to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which polled 215 against the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) 186 votes.

Trouble however started when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official started counting the Senate and House of Representatives ballots.

The thugs who thought the counting was not going in their favour snatched the four ballot boxes and ran away.

However, the armed security personnel at the polling units quickly accosted the thugs and recovered two ballot boxes from them.

In the ensuing meleu, the two persons sustained gunshot injuries and one of them later died.

The thugs appeared with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when the counting of House of Representatives was underway to snatch ballot boxes, papers and other relevant materials.

Eyewitnesses said the hoodlums stormed the unit at about 7:20 pm when the INEC Presiding Officer was about counting the House of Representatives votes.

Voters, party supporters others storm INEC office in Warri

By Elo Edremoda, Warri

Over 100 persons, including voters, party agents, politicians and supporters are at the secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State over the non conduct of elections in major parts of the council.

The council boss, Dr. Michael Tidi and agents of parties have just concluded a meeting with the electoral officer, Kingsley Ogboe, over how to go about the exercise in areas where elections were not conducted.

Ogboe is yet to give audience to the press.

However, sorting and distribution of materials is ongoing at the INEC office.

The Nation gathered that the unavailability of result sheets for some units, absence of Supervisory Polling Officers (SPOs) and vehicles to convey sorted materials to the affected polling units are posing challenges to the workers.

When approached by some adhoc staff on how to proceed to the polling units, an official seen manning the door of the EO said staff are only to return to units with complete or uncompromised result sheets.

Some adhoc staff were heard reporting that some of the SPOs have refused to go back to the field.

It was further gathered that materials got to the polling centres late yesterday because of an alleged directive by the Electoral Officer.

An INEC official who spoke in confidence disclosed that “we were all here waiting. We slept here so that we can leave early. But we were told that the EO directed that we wait. It was around 12 noon to 1p.m that we were dispatched”.

However, it was gathered that at Wards 1, 3, 7, 8, 11 and 12 there will be partial conduct of elections, while polls will hold fully at Wards 4 and 9.

INEC declares Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal constituency poll inconclusive

By Sanni Onogu, Lokoja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared the House of Representatives poll in Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency inconclusive.

The Returning Officer Dr. Adams Baba, declared this after announcing results of the election.

According to Baba, the action became necessary following the slim margin of difference between the winners and the first runner up and the cancelation of results in two polling units of the federal Constituency during the poll.

Baba said the difference in the results between the winner, Arch Salman Idris of African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Prince Matthew Kolawole was not up to the number of registered voters in the canceled polling units.

Baba said: “The ADC candidate (Idris) polled 13,867 while the APC candidate (Kolawole) polled 13,605 leaving just 262 votes difference.

“Whereas, the number of PVCs collected in the cancelled polling units of Iya in Otu ward in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area is 485 and that of Open Space polling unit in Egbeda ward in Ijumu Local Government Area is 100. This is more than the difference between the two leading candidates.”

Baba however did not state the date when a rerun election would be conducted in the affected polling units.

By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

After standing for about 25 minutes, Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, could not be validated to cast his vote at his Polling Unit 8, Ward nine, Rumueprikon, Obio-Akpor, following the failure of the Bio-modal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS).

The Governor, who left the unit, said they were disappointed with INEC.

“I have stayed about 25 minutes here and I was told to go and come back that they will rectify the BIVAS. We are highly disappointed. If a number of people are disenfranchised, what do you expect?

Atiku not in contention, says Senator Adeyemi

  • By Jide Orintinsin, Abuja
Senator Smart Adeyemi (Kogi West) has ruled out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar from contention in Saturday’s presidential election.
Adeyemi, who stormed the APC National Secretariat on Monday evening to pick the Kogi State governorship nomination forms, said the presidential contest is a two-horse race between APC candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Labour Party counterpart Peter Obi.

He spoke after picking his governorship form to contest the Kogi gubernatorial poll slated for November 11, 2023.

The former National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), who gave this assessment, hailed the 19 Northern APC Governors for insisting that power must shift to the South.

Rating the likely performance of the presidential candidates, the Kogi State governorship hopeful ruled out the PDP candidate, insisting that the race is between Tinubu and Obi.

He said:  “Why will anybody ask you to vote for Atiku? Was he not in charge of privatisation? Was he not the one who sold out assets to non-performing companies? All those who do not know the history will be shouting Atiku. Atiku is not in the equation.”

The third-term federal lawmaker was full of praises for the APC northern Governors who stood their ground that power must shift to the south in 2023 and rescue the country from crisis.

“Northern Governors in the APC insisted on a power shift to save Nigeria from the crisis. History will forever be kind to them. This election is between Asiwaju and Obi. Atiku is not in the race. Atiku cannot be in the race,” he said.

On the implementation of the naira redesign policy, he said: “They brought this redesigning of our currency to ridicule APC. Asiwaju creates wealth. Atiku sold our wealth and resources. I pity Peter Obi because politics is the way you are seeing it. Just yesterday, the entire Labour Party structure in the Northwest collapsed its structure for the APC. So, how is he going to win the election? Maybe he is a man for the future but in this election, the strength is not there.

“It is beyond street politics. I am from Kogi. There is no Labour Party presence in my constituency. Winning an election is about strategic thinking and planning not about talking too much

“I am supporting Asiwaju and Shettima not because they are APC but because of their records and contemporary issues in the Nigerian nation.”

Akeredolu urges massive votes for Tinubu

  • By Osagie Otabor, Akure
Ondo Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has called on Ondo people to troop-out enmass on Saturday to vote for presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Akeredolu said the choice of Tinubu could not be faulted owing to political workings of the country.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Owo, Owo local government, Akeredolu said Tinubu has a track record of achievement.

The Ondo Governor said Tinubu’s achievements towered above others.

He said: “We are supporting him not because we are from the same tribe but because he’s competent.

“Tinubu is a trusted and tested leader. Our insistence on Southern Presidency is for fairness and equality.

An Awoist and legal practitioner, Barr. Eddy Osifo, had faulted comments by Chief  Afe Babalola that the outcome of next Saturday’s presidential election would depend on the deepness of the candidates’ pocket.

Osifo argued that the winner would depend on the level of sophistication and political methodology.

In a statement in Akure, Barr. Osifo said Tinubu, appeared more sophisticated and methodical in a approach to campaigns as well as reaching out to electorates.

Barr. Osifo stated that Tinubu has the brightest chance of winning the presidential election.

He said the victory of Tinubu would not be dependent on deep pockedtedness but the level of sophistication in style.

“If  Tinubu wins on Saturday, it will  not  be  due  to his  deep  pocketedness  but  to  the  level  of  sophistication  in  his  style.”
