Ogun students sack rival school over colleagues’ death during gambling

Socio-economic activities came to an abrupt end in Abeokuta, the state capital, yesterday afternoon  when scores of secondary school students of two public schools locked themselves in fierce battle.

It followed a bid  by students of one of the schools to avenge the death of two of their colleagues, who died after lethal attacks during illicit inter-schools’ gambling session.

The incident involved senior secondary school students of the Baptist Boys High School (BBHS), Saje, who invaded the Ilugun High School located within the Federal Housing Estate (FHE), also in Saje area of the metropolis, to avenge the death of their colleagues.

Their colleagues were allegedly stabbed to death last week during gambling session that latter turned bloody.

It was learnt that the BBHS students, who were armed with gun, cutlasses, broken bottles and assorted charms, stormed Ilugun High School and held the teachers and students in terror,   shot sporadically in every direction and chanted anti-management songs to warn the principal and teachers to keep off, lest they be brought down with gunshots.

The Nation learnt that the BBHS boys elected to visit Ilugun High School with violence on the suspicion that their colleagues were killed by its students, vowing not to vacate the premises until a just revenge was extracted from the students.

Many teachers and students of the school had to run in different directions, scaling the perimeter fence so as not to be caught up in the crisis, which later spread to all adjourning streets.

When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that the command deployed security operatives to the area to restore sanity.
