Police boss blows hot against criminals

From Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

Edo State Commissioner of Police Babatunde Kokumo has declared war on criminals. He said criminal elements would not know peace.

The commissioner spoke yesterday when he paraded 48 suspects for robbery (14), cultism (16) and escapees from lawful custody (18).

Kokumo said two AK-47 rifles; four locally-made guns; a Toyota Yaris (UBJ 447 SZ); a Toyota Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle (DGE 524 AH) and 21 live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.

He said: “There have been hues and cries about the security situation which inadvertently shot up after the #EndSARS protests. This is connected to the attacks on police facilities and jailbreaks, wherein arms and ammunition were looted and prisoners (1,993) escaped.

“We will not watching the hoodlums have a field day. Our main concern now is geared towards re-arresting the escapees and recovering the looted arms and ammunition in circulation.

“Security agencies, in conjunction with the government, have put machinery in place to checkmate activities of the hoodlums. As we approach the yuletide, the police will not rest until all the arms and ammunition carted away by the hoodlums are recovered and the escapees rearrested.”
