Politicians urged to set good examples for youths

As Nigeria prepares for next year’s general elections, politicians have been enjoined to set good examples for the youth to follow.

The Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Ethiope West Local Government of Delta State, Bishop Mike Otunyo said it is the responsibility of politicians to set examples for the populace, particularly youths to live a life of probity and accountability to make the Nigerian society a beautiful one for all citizens because everyone in the society looks up to them.

Otunyo made the remark during a lecture he delivered on causes and solutions to delays in life, in Jesse, Delta State.

A statement by the presiding bishop of the Alive for Life Gospel Church said it is high time those in the corridors of power started inculcating lasting values of love and unity that are required to make the nation great. He said religion and politics can go hand in hand towards the development of Nigeria, and not merely for narrow and selfish ambitions, as has been witnessed in recent times.

Bishop Otunyo said if politicians champion the interest of the ordinary people who are mostly youths in their policies and programmes they will be helping to build a balanced and healthy society where corruption will be reduced to the barest minimum.

He added: “Democracy should not be the other way round of government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich. Rather, it should be guided by the normal norm for the people, by the people and for the people.”

Otunyo said delays are usually found in many aspects of life, such as in marital, finance, job promotion, spiritual delays, as well as in health and that they are the result of decisions that lie in the past.

The bishop who recently returned from a pilgrimage to the holy lands said there are many social-economic advantages in Nigeria that political elites ought to harness to make the economy one that would stand out in the global arena.

Otunyo added: “This is the time to correct any error of the past since 1960 independence and balance the political landscape of the country.”

Many religious and political leaders within and outside Delta State attended the event.
