Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya yesterday said the state government has spent up to N2 billion as compensation for those whose houses were affected in the construction of roads across the state.
The Governor disclosed this at the launch of the payment of compensation for 309 properties affected by the recently-awarded road construction in Malam Inna-Kagarawul-Anguwan Uku and Bolari quarters of Gombe metropolis.
The sum of N381 million has been voted for the payment of compensation in all the quarters put together.
The Governor frowned at the attitude of some individuals who had wanted to overheat the process for the payment of compensation, noting that the committee for the evaluation of individual property comprises individuals with proven integrity who would do nothing to shortchange anyone.
Governor Yahaya called on the people to remain resolute and steadfast to his administration’s commitment to turn around the fortunes of the state while keeping at arm’s length anyone who do not mean well for them.
“My administration is built on the trust you gave me and I shall continue to protect your interest and your human dignity at all times. The responsibility of building a virile state lies on our shoulders and we shall continue to do all that is necessary to fulfil our promise which is to place the state on the part of sustainable economic development,” he said.
The Governor said the road construction will commence upon the completion of the payment of compensation to every individual whose property will be affected by the infrastructural development, saying his administration will continue to focus attention on areas that are densely populated within the state capital and its environs.
He said despite the global economic meltdown to which the state is not immune, his administration has continued to place a premium on infrastructural development, social engagement and economic transformation.
Yahaya also explained that the road construction in Malam Inna Kagarawul Anguwan Uku and Bolari quarters of the state capital is a replica of what obtains in other parts of the state aimed at opening up the entire state for social and economic activities.
He described road networks as an important artery for the ease of not only doing business but also for the movement of goods and accessing education and health services within the state.
The Chairman of the compensation Committee and Commissioner for Finance, Mohammad Gambo Magaji had earlier told the gathering that the state government is committed to paying those whose property will be affected by the road constructions what is due to them.
Explaining the modalities for the payment of compensation, the Commissioner of Works Abubakar Bappah said the payment of compensation to anyone whose property is affected by road construction is based on the type and the overall finishing of a property.
