Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the lawmaker representing Lagos Central, yesterday launched fisheries training as part of her empowerment drive for her constituents.
Justifying the need for the training in fish farming, held in collaboration with her constituency office and the Nigerian Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research, Sen. Tinubu said the inability of Nigerians to produce the required fish and fish products for the teeming population had made it compelling for interest in that area as an incentive.
Raising a poser as to why the choice of fisheries, the lawmaker said: “It has been stated over and over that Nigeria’s agricultural output is far less than what is required to feed her teeming population.”
Citing the 2018-2021 report of the World Fish Nigeria Strategy, which shows that Nigeria produces over one million metric tons of fish with a deficit of 800, 000 metric tons, which is then imported from other countries annually, she said this has made fish farming inevitable.
“Knowing that fish farming, when done rightly can be lucrative and instrumental to reducing our employment rates and fish imports, we have partnered the Nigerian Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research to train 70 of our constituents. We painstakingly picked the beneficiaries, ensuring that those selected have a genuine interest in fish farming and are desirous of embarking on the business on a commercial level,” she said.
Tinubu said the two-day training will hold at the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island, Lagos.
