  • 2Baba’s Foundation apologises to fans over cancelled protest

2Baba’s Foundation apologises to fans over cancelled protest

2Baba Foundation, the body responsible for Innocent Idibia’s proposed ‘One Voice’ march which eventually withdrew from last Monday’s nationwide protest has apologised to fans of the singer, following backlash from some quarters.
In a statement released on Monday, the Foundation gave reasons why they backed out from the protest.
The statement reads: “On behalf of Innocent “2Baba” Idibia, we would like to apologise to the fans, colleagues and everyday Nigerians who feel let down by the cancellation of this protest.
“2Baba’s aim was to lend his voice to make the government aware of the growing discontent due to the wildly escalating cost of living for Nigerians in Nigeria among other issues.
“Arguably one of the country’s most influential musicians, he saw it fit to use his considerable platform; at the core of which are Nigerians, to amplify their voice.
This is why he chose to march for the cause, and why he was so honoured when his industry colleagues pledged their support.
“In line with the commitment of ‘One Voice’ Nigeria to ensure a peaceful and impactful protest, The 2face Foundation and partners engaged with the security agencies to resolve all major security concerns but treacherous gaps remain that we are unwilling to ignore.
“The risk of hijack by various political and sundry interests’ intent on using the platform to drive agendas that we as the 2Face Foundation are not aligned with and therefore exposing protesters to high levels of danger is the main reason why 2baba regretfully had to withdraw himself from the march.
“He has refused to inadvertently present a platform for mischief makers to exploit.
“2baba would like to express his great regret over these circumstances to everyone who feels disappointed. However, he hopes they will agree that as he said in the video announcing the development; ‘no protest is worth the blood of any Nigerian.”
The singer, according to the statement, promises to continue working on avenues to that ensure the voice of the ordinary man is heard.
He however denied being arrested by DSS as is being reported in various online media. “Thanks for the concern guys. I’m fine and free. Reports about DSS arrest are not true. We are still compiling your responses for the leadership. State your opinion on social media with the hastag #IStandWithNigeria. Peace! One luv always!!!” he wrote.

  • 2BABA CALL TO PROTEST GETS MORE TRACTION

SINCE singer Innocent Idibia took to Facebook in a video, calling Nigerians to join a scheduled nation-wide protest on Monday, February 6, for the return of good governance, more people have welcomed the idea.

The nine minutes and 14 seconds video which was posted on Tuesday, by Idibia, who is popularly known as 2Baba, on his Facebook account, had garnered over 290, 000 views, over 19, 000 reactions and 11, 818 shares by Thursday afternoon.

In the video with the hashtag #WeWillProtest, 2Baba implored Nigerians from different walks of life to join in the protest march, saying he is only a musician. Noting that the problem of Nigeria as beyond the president, the artiste said “we have a system that is clearly designed not to work for the majority.”

He also said the Lagos leg of the march scheduled to hold at the National Stadium, Surulere, is not arranged by the organised private sector, politicians, or based on religion or ethnicity. He said the protest was to call the government attention to the deplorable level of education, food security, unemployment, healthcare, power and social justice which has continue to negatively affect Nigerians’ standard of living.

While Blackface, one of the member of 2Baba’s former band, Plantashun Boiz, posted a controversial piece which attacked 2Baba’s intention, many other artistes including Davido, Burna Boy, Charly Boy, Ruggedman, I Go Dye, and popular ‘Galala’ singer, Daddy Showkey have declared their support for the protest.

However, Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said he would not allow the planned protest because it could be hijacked by hoodlums.

“Information reaching us revealed that some hoodlums are planning to hijack the peaceful protest,” Owoseni told The Nation newspaper on Wednesday.

“And as such, we won’t allow it to hold in Lagos. We know that 2face do not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand.”

FG responds to 2Baba’s protest call

Since the idea for the nation-wide protest became the talk of town, singer Innocent Idibia, aka 2Baba, who brought Nigerians’ plight to the government in a new video has stated that he is just a musician, with a point of view and the ear of his fans.

The protest which is scheduled to hold on February 6, 2017 at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, is targeted at some of the policies of government he perceived are not favourable to the people.

2Baba said: “I stand with Nigeria. There is enough in Nigeria for all of us to ‘chop belleful’. Enough is enough. We must put Nigeria first and keep all the greedy and selfish people away from leadership.”

Reacting to the proposed protest, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, while speaking in an interview with Lagos Talk 91.3FM, said those who are calling for the protest are people who supported the last government and are still pained that they lost the last election.

”This is a country of about 180 million people,” he said.

“It is impossible for 180 million people to think the same way. Yoruba has a saying that if you all sleep and put your heads in the same direction, and then you are all foolish because you would be breathing in one another’s mouth and lungs.

“Don’t forget the last election and how it went. Somebody scored 12.5 million votes; another scored about 15 million votes. There are some people who are still in that election mode. They have not gotten out of it and till today, they are still living and ‘romanticising’ about the past. What they don’t know is that that past is gone and gone forever. Majority of those calling for the protest are still in election mode. Majority of them are people that have resolved not to see anything good in this administration simply because the man they wanted lost at the polls.”
