  • My legendary status intact even if unrecognised by young artistes, says 2baba

My legendary status intact even if unrecognised by young artistes, says 2baba

Veteran musician, Innocent ‘2baba’ Idibia, has affirmed his iconic status within the Nigerian music industry, emphasizing that even the lack of recognition by the new generation of singers cannot diminish it.

He explained in an interview with Adesope Olajide, aka Shopsydoo, that the new generation artistes didn’t quite owe him anything including recognition.

2baba, however, admitted to having a sense of gratitude towards those that recognise his journey and massive input towards the growth of Nigerian music across the continent and globe.

He said: “Nobody owes me anything. For me, my legendary status is there. It’s never going to go away”, stated the ‘African Queen’ crooner.

“It doesn’t reduce who I am if young artistes don’t recognise my legendary status.

“The only thing is, definitely, I appreciate it when people recognise my legendary status. There’s nobody that won’t appreciate that.

“I appreciate when people recognise but I don’t take it too personal when they don’t. That one na the person ignorance.

“Nobody owes person anything because everybody that comes, they are going to tell their own stories. They are not going to start telling my own story.

“Every artist that comes up now, even if they get inspiration from me or anybody, they are going to use it to elevate themselves. And that is their own stories.”

You are ‘Super talented African Giant’, 2baba dubs Olamide

It was all accolades from veteran musician, Innocent ‘2baba’ Idibia to his younger colleague, Olamide Baddo as they ran into each other in the US.

Considered one of the most influential artists in Africa, Olamide Baddo has played a pivotal role in propelling the careers of various Afrobeats’ music talents.

Following the resounding success of one of his signee Asake who recently sold out the popular 20,000-capacity London 02 Arena, the YBNL boss alongside his protégé have continued to attract acclaim globally.

Meeting with Olamide, 2baba who was in the company of some associates couldn’t hold back from congratulating the “Unruly” crooner on the remarkable success of his artiste.

The 47-year-old “African Queen” singer lavished encomiums on Baddo, noting how much of a blessing he’s been to many as well as the growth of the African music genre globally.

“You see this man right here, they don’t come many. This guy, they come very few of them”, he said, hailing Baddo with their arms across each other’s backs while they beamed with smile.

Olamide on his part hailed 2baba, stating: “Yes o! we dey here. My oga.”

Accompanying the video, the Hypertek Digital boss wrote: “In the presence of greatness @olamide. A real one. A trailblazer. Humble crazy gentle rugged and super-talented African Giant.

“A True blessing to so many and to the entire movement. A Lazer Focused Young Don #LEGENDARY

  • Banky W supports 2baba on COSON audit

FOLLOWING the call from singer 2baba for the accounts of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) to be properly audited, another singer Banky Wellington, known as Banky W, has thrown in his support.

Banky W wrote: “If we don’t take steps to hold men in power accountable, we lay down the red carpet for them to abuse it. COSON is the Copyright Society of Nigeria (our collecting society), and it has recently been embroiled in all kinds of public & legal battles. 2 weeks ago @official2baba called for an Independent audit of COSON’s bank accounts. Allegations abound that the society went from spending 1m on security in 2017, to 31m in 2018, as well as rumours of Directors paying themselves as consultants and contractors for the Society’s events…so much so that the NCC has now suspended COSON’s operating license.

“We’ve seen so many of our icons ascend to the highest heights, only to end up in illness and abject poverty, because their Intellectual Property was never properly paid for. In Nigeria, most musicians are only as wealthy as their last performance. There’s a reason why the catalogues of Michael Jackson and the Beatles are worth billions of dollars, while many of our greatest creators are left to rot, after their moment in the Sun.

“A COSON that works would mean a producer like ID Cabasa would be PROPERLY compensated for co-creating Gongo Aso. It would mean that OJB Jezreel (RIP), producer of “African Queen”, wouldn’t have needed crowd-or-celebrity-funding to pay his medical bills.

“2Baba is completely justified as a pioneer, living legend and major stakeholder in our Industry, to request that our society’s accounts be audited. I found the response to his request to be belittling and insulting… with the Chairman claiming that 2Baba was just trying to be on @efeomorogbe’s side, because Efe is his manager and many members have voted for Efe to replace him.

“Chief Tony Okoroji has been Chairman of COSON since 2009, and has spearheaded many important strides taken. However, a leadership position in society must not be allowed to become a potential retirement home.

“The truest test of a man’s character is not when he is faced with adversity, but when he is given power. I’d like him to agree to the audit, and also put in limits on how long anyone can be in power. I hope he remembers Goodluck Jonathan: sometimes, your legacy in power is determined by how you hand it over.”

  • Recording with 2Baba has been our best moments, says AB

Apex and Bionic, the music duo of Andrew Omokhudu and Daniel Omokhudu who are known as AB, has said that working with 2 Baba has been their best moments so far.

The brothers dropped their single, ‘For Your Matter’, a collaboration with TuBaba, on iTunes on June 1, 2019.

“Best moments so far in music was recording with 2face,” they recalled.

“It was a night of lots of knowledge and excitement. It was a memorable experience.”

The brothers also said that there’s less than 20% of real entertainment in Nigeria’s music space and they want to bring more diversity to the entertainment prism.

“We took a year to really study the industry in Nigeria and realized there is less than 20% of real entertainment being experienced in the country,” the brothers who are signed to JFK Resolute Entertainment record label, disclosed in a chat recently.

“So, we plan on serving diversity and creativity. Being original, real and aggressive with our music and promotions is also another thing that we intend to utilize now. We also intend to stretch the portfolio of what people really consider as entertainment and bring more materials to them, and since variety is the spice of life as they say, we’ll serve them well. We are coming with a lot of materials this time so watch out for the unexpected.”

AB started music in 2010 and released their debut single, ‘Tell Them’, in 2014 and followed it up with another one in 2015 titled ‘Oshere’. In 2016, they released their EP, a 10-track project tagged ‘Nothing to Something’. The EP boasts of songs like Mayan, Call Me, Touch your Toes, Get Down, featuring Uhuru and DJ Maphorisa, New Money, Inject You, Ojoro, Eledumare and Back Then, featuring Choco Jay.
