2015: 2Face, Funmi Iyanda, Kemi Lala support debate series

SEVERAL top Nigerian artistes have been scheduled to perform at a series of voters education concerts, which will take place in Kaduna, Jos, Owerri and Lagos, following the first leg in Port Harcourt recently.

This was disclosed at a press briefing in Lagos on Monday.

Some of the performers at these concerts include 2Face, MI, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy and Reminisce. The concerts also promise guest appearances from a list of other celebrities.

The concerts are prior to a television programme, tagged “The People’s Debate”, which an advocacy group, Enough Is Enough (EIE) will hold ahead of the February 14 election.

Notable broadcaster, Funmi Iyanda, during the press briefing, stated that the debate series has been designed to position voters at the centre of democratic process. “It augments the information required to select credible candidates and hold them accountable once in office,” she said.

However, the debate will be a forum where the presidential and governorship aspirants will tell the people why they should be selected as credible political office holders.

According to Idibia, “The EIE stands for every Nigerian to have their say, Nigeria na for everybody, so our voice as Nigerians needs to be taken seriously.”

‘The People’s Debate’, hosted by EIE Nigeria, in partnership with GenVoices, Channels TV, MTV Base, GEMSTONE and the Nigerian Global Shapers Hubs (Lagos, Abuja, Clabar, Ibadan & Kano) will hold in Lagos, Plateau, Kaduna, Imo, Rivers, Taraba as well as a presidential debate in Abuja.

Iyanda added that the platform “is meant to constitute itself into an effective opposition to governance, not just at the point of election but throughout their terms in office.”

The presidential debate will be moderated by Mr. John Momoh, in his first return to TV in at least five years. The debate is scheduled for Sunday, February 1, in Abuja, and will be broadcast live on Channels TV and streamed live on Nigeria Info 99.3 FM and online via a Google Hangout and on Youtube.

While candidates tend to shy away from debates, the platform hopes to create a groundswell of citizen’s demand for a debate. Citizens are being asked via various platforms – online, SMS, TV, radio – to show their support for a debate by voting on what topics they would like discussed.

When asked what guarantee the organisers have that the candidates would attend, Kayode Akintemi, General Manager at Channels TV representing Mr. John Momoh said, “It is our responsibility as members of the press and as citizens to demand a debate and ensure candidates who do not commit are called out. In 2015, a debate is a requirement for campaigning.”

The debates are part of EiE’s flagship RSVP Campaign which aims to get young people to Register to vote, Select credible candidates, Vote and Protect their votes using tools such as the Revoda mobile application.
