President hails education reforms, urban renewal drive in Kano

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on today’s celebration of his 63rd birthday.

The President lauded the governor’s modesty, integrity and commitment to public service.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Governor Yusuf’s administration as reflective of disciplined leadership and a strong sense of responsibility to the people, noting that his style of governance has reinforced Kano’s reputation as a centre of progressive politics in Northern Nigeria.

Governor Yusuf, who was elected in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), previously served as Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport between 2011 and 2015 during the administration of Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.

President Tinubu observed that Yusuf’s leadership in Kano echoes the historic struggle for social justice and grassroots empowerment championed by the late Aminu Kano, particularly in improving the welfare of the talakawa—the ordinary people.

“Governor Yusuf’s leadership experience, particularly his years as commissioner, managing strategic portfolios in Kano State, may have prepared him for the kind of infrastructural changes now witnessed in the state,” the President said.

He noted that the governor has embarked on ambitious urban renewal programmes, including the construction of bridges and road networks across the state.

“He has embarked on urban renewal programmes, building bridges and road networks, including the five-kilometre roads in each local government in the state,” Tinubu added.

The President also lauded Yusuf’s declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector, describing it as a decisive intervention with visible results.

“I also understood that his declaration of emergency in education has engendered a marked improvement in the performance of Kano students in National Examinations Council (NECO) exams,” he said.

President Tinubu wished the Kano governor a long life and many more years of impactful service, expressing confidence that his administration would continue to deliver transformative leadership for the benefit of the people of the state.

  • ‘Yusuf’s defection to APC shifted to involve federal lawmakers’

‘Yusuf’s defection to APC shifted to involve federal lawmakers’

    • Uzodimma’s visit to Otti reignites Abia gov’s move

The planned defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC), initially scheduled for Monday, January 5, 2026, has been shifted to January 12.

Even though the new date is tentative, The Nation gathered yesterday.

The reschedule is to allow for more consultation by the governor, who was elected on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), with National Assembly lawmakers from the state and key stakeholders who are yet to fully commit to the move.

Speculation is also rife in Abia State about the possible defection of Governor Alex Otti to the APC, following the New Year’s Day visit to him by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma.

Uzodinma, who is the Chairman of both the APC Governors’ Forum and South East Governors’ Forum, has been credited with the recent gains of the party in the South East.

Political sources said in Kano yesterday that state lawmakers led by Speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore have joined the majority of the local government council chairmen who have signed the governor’s decamping document.

The defection is part of a larger political realignment that will enable Governor Yusuf to potentially take on a significant leadership role in the state chapter of the party, and as well seal the governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

The move, a strategic decision to strengthen the APC’s position in Kano State, has not been approved by the governor’s benefactor and national leader of the NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is speculated to be on his way to joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Yusuf’s planned defection, if it happens, will be a significant blow to the Kwankwaso-led  Kwankwasiyya Movement.

The former governor had publicly declared that no one betrays the movement and goes free.

The disagreement between Yusuf and Kwankwaso has already cost Hashimu Dungurawa his position as state chairman of the party.

Dungurawa is a protégé of Kwankwaso.

Governor Yusuf has since picked Alhaji Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya as Acting State Chairman of the NNPP in Kano State.

The national secretariat of the party has described the change in the party’s leadership in Kano as a nullity.

The APC is treating Yusuf’s defection move as a major political gain.

Governor Yusuf’s defection to the APC has significant implications for Kano State politics and beyond, including stripping the NNPP of its only governorship seat and potentially reducing its influence and viability as a national party.

The defection will bolster APC’s dominance in Kano and enhance its chances, including President Bola Tinubu’s, in the 2027 general elections.

The existing power bloc of the Kano APC, led by the immediate past Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has openly expressed its readiness to work with Yusuf.

Ganduje and the State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, have invited Governor Yusuf, urging him to feel free to join the ruling party.

Uzodimma’s visit to Otti reignites defection speculation

Governor Uzodimma’s visit to Governor Otti came on the heels of the recent statement by the Abia State governor that he would not join Mr Peter Obi in switching to the ADC.

Otti was elected on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), the same platform on which Obi contested the 2023 presidential election.

Otti said he would try to save the LP from going under but would consider other options if his efforts in the end yielded no positive results.

He was originally in the APC and crossed only to the LP ahead of the last election after failing to win the APC governorship ticket.

Uzodimma’s visit to Otti was the first since 2023.

Uzodimma told journalists during the visit that it had nothing to do with politics.

He said: “My visit is a courtesy call on the Governor, who I have also seen is doing very well.

“I wished him a happy New Year and prayed with him so that the Almighty God will give us enough strength to continue to serve our people better and better. That is why I am here.”

The Imo State Governor said that the Southeast Governors are determined to develop the region, and would do that through collaboration.

“We in the South East, we are determined to develop the region. And the only way we can do this is through collaboration.

“And as the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, I have a responsibility to touch base with them, to discuss with them, share ideas, and agree on how best to help the people of the region to survive.

“The five of us, Governors of the South East, have decided to make sure that the South East is part of Nigeria. And that is what we are working on,” Uzodimma assured.

Uzodimma, who doubles as the Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in the South East and the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, commended Governor Alex Otti for the good governance he is delivering in Abia State.

Otti thanked his guest for the visit and explained that the visit was not politically motivated.

He said that belonging to different political parties should not be misconstrued as opposition.

“This is not necessarily a political visit, but because we are all politicians, there is no way we can’t discuss politics,” he said.

“But then, I think what is most important from what he has said is that the government is one. You have the national, the sub-national, and then the local governments. And I made the point that you can’t be opposition in a government that you are part of.

“So, when people mistake an issue of different political parties as opposition, they miss the mark.

“You can disagree, and there are forums for disagreement. But once a decision has been made, you are part and parcel of that decision.”

Governor Yusuf’s planned defection to APC shifted to January 12

    …Kwankwaso likely to join ADC

The planned defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), earlier slated for Monday, January 5, 2026, has been postponed to January 12, The Nation has learnt.

Sources said the shift was to allow the governor additional time to consult with National Assembly members from Kano State and other key stakeholders who are yet to fully commit to the move.

In the state, it was gathered that members of the Kano State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Jibril Isma’il Falgore, have aligned with the majority of local government council chairmen who have already endorsed the governor’s defection by signing the decamping document.

The planned defection is understood to be part of a broader political realignment aimed at positioning Governor Yusuf for a major leadership role within the APC in Kano State, while also strengthening his chances of securing the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, the move has reportedly not received the approval of the governor’s political benefactor and NNPP national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is widely speculated to be considering a move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

When it eventually occurs, the defection is expected to deal a significant blow to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, led by Kwankwaso, who has warned that betrayal of the movement would not go unpunished.

The rift within the NNPP and the disagreement between Yusuf and Kwankwaso have deepened in recent weeks, culminating in the removal of the party’s Kano State Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, a known Kwankwaso loyalist.

To consolidate his grip on the party’s structure in the state, Governor Yusuf subsequently approved the appointment of Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya as Acting State Chairman of the NNPP in Kano. The NNPP national secretariat, however, has declared the leadership change in Kano null and void.

The APC is treating Yusuf’s defection move as a major political gain, with senior leadership involved in the coordination. In the initial arrangement on Monday, Vice President Kashim Shettima was to receive Abba Yusuf in Abuja before the event was shifted.

Governor Yusuf’s defection to APC has significant implications for Kano State politics and beyond, including striping the NNPP of its only governorship seat and potentially reducing its influence and viability as a national party.

On the other hand, the defection will bolster APC’s dominance in Kano and enhance its chances, including President Bola Tinubu’s in the 2027 general elections.

Curiously, the move is already redefining the political landscape in Kano.

Yusuf’s much awaited arrival in APC is already sparking rivalries within the APC. The existing power bloc of the Kano APC, led by immediate past Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has been directed by the president to welcome Yusuf and work together in the overall interest of the party.

Already, Ganduje and State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas have invited Governor Yusuf, urging him to feel free to join the ruling party.

However, Yusuf’s defection to the APC will ultimately neutralise the chance of Deputy President of the Senate Barau Jibrin who has been aspiring for the ticket to contest against Yusuf in 2027 polls, a development that will likely influence negotiations, future alliances and voter alignments in Kano State.

Barau warns Kano governor against politicising insecurity issues

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has cautioned Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State to stop politicising security matters and instead concentrate on tackling the multiple challenges confronting the state.

His response followed a claim by the state government that his recent comments could undermine ongoing security operations.

The allegation was made at the end of the 34th State Executive Council Meeting chaired by the governor.

Senator Barau, however, insisted that Nigeria’s security crisis—including the activities of bandits in parts of Kano—requires collective effort and cooperation from all stakeholders.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President dismissed the government’s accusation and dared officials to present any video evidence showing he made remarks capable of worsening insecurity in the state.

“The attention of the media office of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, CFR, FCNA, has been drawn to false, reckless and malicious claims by the Kano State Government through the State Commissioner of Information, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya that His Excellency, the Deputy President of the Senate, made a statement capable of undermining the security efforts in the state.

“It is unfortunate that the state government has relegated governance to this low by concocting and fabricating lies to tarnish the growing reputation of the Deputy President of the Senate. There was no time when Senator Barau uttered any statement capable of undermining security efforts; instead, he has been at the forefront, collaborating with all stakeholders to address the insecurity challenges in parts of Kano and other areas in the country.

“We challenge them to produce the clip in which the Deputy President of the Senate made any statement that could undermine security efforts,” he said.

The Deputy President of the Senate, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, urged the Kano State Governor to wake up from slumber and take charge of the affairs of the state to return Kano to the path of prosperity.

“Until governance was relegated to the background, our beloved state, Kano, used to be a very close second to Lagos in terms of prosperity, but unfortunately, misgovernance has eroded this. We have everything necessary to restore the glorious days of our state, but the governor is not taking steps in that direction,” he said.

To contribute to the enhancement of security in the state, Senator Barau has provided operational vehicles to all police formations in his senatorial district and some parts of the state, and has also offered motorcycles to all policemen serving in Kano North Senatorial District.

Additionally, he renovated parts of the Kano State police headquarters and constructed police stations in different parts of the state. He had also rendered similar assistance to the Department of State Services (DSS) in the state.

“The Deputy President of the Senate has also facilitated the establishment of the training college of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Gwarzo, the Nigeria Police Service Commission training institute in Kabo, and the Nigeria Immigration Service training school in Bichi, which are all being constructed.

“He has also installed solar-powered streetlights throughout his senatorial district and other parts of the state to facilitate effective nighttime patrols. Senator Barau has made significant contributions to the enhancement of security in Kano State. The state government should emulate him and not cast aspersions on his personality,” he said.

Governors Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano State) and Agbu Kefas (Taraba) have presented the proposed 2026 Appropriation Bills of N1,368,127,929,271 and N650.50 billion to the states’ Houses of Assembly for scrutiny and approval.

During the presentation, Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing legacy projects and deepening inclusive development across the state.

The budget has 68 per cent capital expenditure, amounting to N934.6 billion, and 32 per cent recurrent expenditure, totalling N433.4 billion.

The 2026 proposed budget is the highest capital-to-recurrent ratios in Kano’s history, the governor said.

Education has the lion share of N405.3 billion (30 per cent), followed by Infrastructure at N346.2 billion (25 per cent) and Health at N212.2 billion (16 per cent), reflecting the top priorities.

“These allocations demonstrate our unwavering determination to invest heavily in human capital development, safeguard the well-being of our people, and lay the physical foundation for sustainable growth.

“The economic and social sectors remain central to our 2026 fiscal plan, with Agriculture, Security, Commerce, Water, Environment, Tourism, Women and Youth Development, and People with Special Needs also receiving substantial provisions,” Yusuf said.

The governor pledged to align his administration’s priorities with citizens’ aspirations.

He emphasised that the budget is “a bold but realistic roadmap, designed to secure a resilient and prosperous Kano”.

Yusuf urged the House of Assembly to grant the Appropriation Bill accelerated passage, stressing that their oversight and partnership remained critical to transforming the budget into tangible projects and services for the people.

Speaker Jibril Falgore said the Hose of Assembly would scrutinise the budget carefully before passing it.

In Taraba State, Kefas presented the N650 billion Appropriation Bill, tagged: the “Budget of Demonstration” to the House of Assembly.

The proposed budget prioritises infrastructure, energy, and social development, marking a significant increase in capital allocation.

The proposed budget allocates N457.74 billion (70.36 per cent) to capital projects, with the remaining N192.89 billion (29.64 per cent) earmarked for recurrent expenditure.

Kefas said the budget would be financed through a combination of traditional revenue sources, including the Federation Account Allocation Commission (FAAC), Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), aids and grants, and capital development receipts.

The governor said his administration planned to actively pursue new revenue streams, focusing on expanding digital revenue systems and generating income from key sectors, like agriculture, mining, property, business, and tourism.

Outlining the primary areas of next year’s expenditure in the budget proposal, the governor earmarked 19.84 per cent for Roads and Transport, followed by Education and Skill Development at 15.98 per cent.

Other significant allocations include Healthcare at 6.19 per cent, Agriculture and Food Security at 4.83 per cent, Water and Sanitation at 3.19 per cent, and Security and Emergency Services at 2.96 per cent.

Kefas noted that energy is crucial for development, pledging dedicated investment in solar mini-grids, hybrid rural electrification schemes, street lighting, and securing power for critical facilities like schools, hospitals, markets, and agro-processing centres.

Speaker John Bozena praised Kefas for the proposed Appropriation Bill’s adherence to budgetary provisions and for his judicious utilisation of state resources.

The Speaker assured the governor that the Assembly would ensure a speedy passage of the Appropriation Bill to meet its legislative timeline.

Kwankwaso, Yusuf nationalists working for unity, says Idahosa

Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso and Kano Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf have been described as true nationalists working for the unity and cohesion of Nigeria.

Vice Presidential candidate of the NNPP in the election, Bishop Issac Idahosa said this on Wednesday when he hosted business and religious leaders from Southern Nigeria.

The delegation was led by the leader of the Southern Development Forum, Pastor Bassey James.

Idahosa, who returned from Kano where he joined in the birthday celebration of his principal, told his guests that Nigeria would be a lot better with the likes of Kwankwaso and Yusuf.

He said, “Kwankwaso and the Kano state governor have proven to be true Nigerians whose conducts and actions have demonstrated that tribalism and religion can cannot destroy national Cohesion.

“Kwankwaso ‘s political ideology has endeared him to the hearts of millions of people across the country.

2nd Anniversary: Kano APC group scores Yusuf low

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Patriotic Volunteers on Wednesday criticised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, saying his administration has fallen short of expectation.

Addressing a press conference in Kano, the National President of the group, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, emphasised that Yusuf has failed to deliver on his promises, “particularly taking into cognisance of FAAC allocation remittance among other acruable sources of revenue to the state, including Internally Generated Revenues (IGR).

Alhaji, who served as SSG in the immediate past Abdullahi Ganduje administration, said the Yusuf administration owes every Kano person good leadership, irrespective of whether they voted for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) or not, as it was also the group’s democratic right to challenge it.

“Having carefully assessed and analysed Kano State Government’s performance in the course of NNPP two-year administration, APC Patriotic Volunteers finds it expedient to respond to series of half truths, lies and propaganda dished out in the name of achievements.

“There is virtually little to show when compared with the billions of naira accruable through FAAC, IGR and other sources,” he said.

For the education sector, the group said the administration declared a state of emergency on the sector and allocated 31 percent of this year’s total budget to education but failed to transform the sector.

Alhaji said about 20 roads and two flyovers under construction were abandoned half way, which is
bound to create grid lock and possible flooding in the metropolitan areas.

The APC Patriotic Volunteers also expressed worry over the state government’s borrowing, alleging that nothing has been done to show for with such funds.

The group national president said: “We have it on authority from the Debt Management Office (DMO) that in between June – December 2023 a total sum of $6.6M (External loans alone) was taken. We demand an update from the State Government on how this huge amount was spent.

“Report indicates that a bold step had been taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pay Nigeria’s $10B IMF debt burden. At this juncture, APC Patriotic Volunteer wishes and expects to know the current debt portfolio of Kano State Government due to claims of running a transparent government.

“We’ve witnessed two years of total failure, two years of blood letting and loss of lives and properties, two years of worsening insecurity, two years of waste, two years of deceit; and two years of retrogression in all facets of life and human endeavor.

“Simply put, the rating of NNPP Government in Kano is a failure.”

Yusuf okays N15.6 billion gratuities for 3,000 ex-political holders

Kano state governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the sum of ₦15.6 billion for the settlement of outstanding severance gratuities owed to over 3,000 former councillors from the 44 local government councils of the state.

The fund is for councillors who served from 2014-2017, 2018-2020, and 2021-2024.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the governor on Information, Ibrahim Adam, indicated that the funds will be disbursed in three tranches across April, May and June.

Adam said the former councillors were members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who served under the immediate past administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, during which their entitlements, including accommodation and leave/recess allowances, were not paid.

“The outstanding payments have caused considerable frustration among the affected ex-council members.

“Governor Abba Yusuf, though elected on a different political platform (NNPP), has taken the initiative to settle their entitlements.

“This approval of ₦15.6 billion is a fulfillment of Governor Abba Yusuf’s promise to ensure that all outstanding entitlements owed to our dedicated public servants are settled.

“It is our duty to uphold the dignity of those who serve in elected positions, a departure from previous administrative practices,” Adam stated, highlighting the administration’s commitment to addressing the plight of the people of Kano.

He further emphasised that the financial intervention is a step towards fostering trust and accountability in governance.

“His Excellency, a true democrat, recognises the sacrifices made by these councillors during their service periods. It is time to right the wrongs of the past, and the government is determined to make this happen.

“This intervention will provide the much-needed support to the over 3,000 persons who have long awaited their rightful entitlements. The financial relief will enhance their well-being and as well impact on their various communities,” Adam added.

Yusuf resolves Kano graduates‘ certificates crisis abroad with N2.5 billion

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has successfully secured the release of academic certificates for 84 medical students from the state after settling an outstanding debt of €1.4 million (approximately ₦2.5 billion) owed to the Near East University in Cyprus.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Ibrahim Adam, disclosed this on Sunday, stating that the affected graduates had been stranded due to the failure of the previous administration to fulfill the university’s financial obligations.

To resolve the impasse, Governor Yusuf travelled to Cyprus on December 9, 2024, where he met with the management of the Near East University in Lefkosia.

During the meeting, he negotiated the release of certificates for students who graduated between 2015 and 2019 but had been unable to obtain their credentials.

Adam noted that the governor’s intervention brought relief to the affected students and their families, correcting years of administrative neglect.

“During a critical meeting with the management of Near East University, the governor focused on facilitating the release of certificates for students who graduated between 2015 and 2019, particularly in essential fields like Medicine and Nursing.

“The certificates are now set to be handed over to the Kano State Scholarship Board through the Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey, which will mark a pivotal moment for the affected students,” he said.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by the graduates, Governor Yusuf declared: “This situation has been a significant setback for our children, hindering their dreams and aspirations, and it has also affected our state, which is in dire need of their expertise.”

Yusuf noted that his vision for a prosperous Kano is centered on prioritising education, ensuring that talented individuals can make valuable contributions to the state’s advancement.

Addressing reporters on Sunday, Adams said the governor’s proactive step has not only addressed the endemic challenges in the education sector but also inspired and renewed hope among the youth of Kano state.

“The governor has always emphasised the crucial role of supporting young people to achieve their dreams, which is vital to the state’s growth.

“This milestone (release of certificates) is a vital investment in the future of individuals and the overall development of the state.

“It means Kano State is now poised to realise its full potential, with the graduates now eager to make impactful contributions to their communities,” Adam said, adding that the governor’s dedication to improving the educational landscape and providing opportunities for the youth is truly commendable.
