  • I’m sure of victory, says PDP candidate

    The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has assured his supporters of victory in the march 23 supplementary poll.

    Kabir’s assurance was contained in a statement signed by his spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa.

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday declared the governorship election inconclusive. The PDP candidate scored 1,014,474, leading the APC candidate who scored 987,819 votes; 2,155,128 was recorded as valid and 49,761 votes were rejected.

    INEC said its declaration of the election as inconclusive was in line with Section 26 of the Electoral Act that said if the number of cancelation of votes cast is beyond the margin between the winner and the loser.

    The PDP candidate was quoted as saying: “We call on all supporters to remain calm, we are known to be peace-lovers and so we shall remain, as we are very sure of victory during the rerun.

    “Our supporters should not forget that PDP is already leading in the last count of the election and interestingly, the bye election would take place in the strongest areas of our party.”

    “We urge everyone to keep hope alive on our quest to rescue Kano from the hands of corrupt leaders and agents of distraction.”

    The statement urged voters to come out en masse to cast their ballot in favour of the PDP, saying: “We will, Insha Allah, emerge victorious after the rerun to restore the lost glory of Kano.”

     

  • Kano rerun: I‘m sure of victory, says PDP candidate

    The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf has assured his teeming supporters of emerging victorious in the forthcoming Gubernatorial rerun election in Kano declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

    This was contained in a statement signed by Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa the Spokesperson to PDP Gubernatorial Candidate for Kano State Abba Kabir Yusuf

    The statement said the election was declared inconclusive due to the cancellation of many polling units.

    The Nation recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday declared the gubernatorial election in Kano as inconclusive as the PDP candidate scored 1,014,474, leading the APC candidate who scored 987,819 votes, adding that 2,155,128 was recorded as Valid and 49,761 votes were rejected.

    According to the electoral body said declaration of the election as inconclusive was in line with section 26 of the Electoral act that said if the number of cancelation of votes cast is beyond the margin between the winner and the looser.

  • Ganduje, 30 gov candidates sign peace accord

    Thirty- one governorship candidates in Kano, including Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on Wednesday, signed the second round of Peace Accord for violent-free election on Saturday.

    Addressing reporters shortly after the signing ceremony held at Bayero University Kano, Co-Chairman of the Committee and Kano Catholic Bishop, Rt. Reverend John Namaza Niyiring, appealed to the candidates to see election as a game with sportsmanship and not a do or die affair.

    The Bishop also called on the youths not to allow themselves to be used by the politicians in disrupting the desired peace for their selfish whims.

    “Whosoever is not satisfied with the results after the elections should follow the available peaceful channels to seek redress and not to engage in violence,” he stated.

     Sheikh Nura Manzo, the Chief Imam of Kofar Ruwa Jumaat Mosque in Kano, also appealed to the contestants and the youths to be peaceful and avoid any act that will lead to violence.

    He said: “Whosoever commits an atom’s weight of good will be rewarded for it by God Almighty and whosoever commits an atom’s weight of evil shall be punished for it in the hereafter.”

    Emir of Kano Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented by Alhaji Aliyu Maharazu, the Bauren Kano, said the country is in need of political security, which can only be achieved by abiding with regulations.

    He pointed out peace is very crucial to achieving this while calling on politicians to learn from other nations that have faced instability around the world.

    Also the former representative of Nigeria at the United Nations, Ibrahim Gambari warned against hate speech, reminding candidates development can only be achieved where there is peace.

    The Kano Commissioner of political Wakil Muhammad said he will redouble his effort in ensuring peaceful conduct of the election as he did during the presidential election.

    ‘’I beg you, if any blood has to be shed during the election let it be my blood,” the CP said.

    In a declaration of commitment to the peace accord, the Kano state governor and candidate for the All Progressive Candidates APC, Ganduje assured the committee he will do all that it takes to ensure peace before, during and after the elections.

    He asked for a group photo with the other candidates in which the cameras were all on him standing by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate Abba Kabir Yusuf.

    In a brief address to newsmen after the event, the PDP candidate also assured that he will keep to the terms of the accord.

  • Kano court strikes out suit against PDP guber candidate

    A Kano High Court on Monday struck out a suit challenging the candidacy of the Governorship Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in Kano Abba Kabir Yusuf.

    The suit was filed by a PDP Guber aspirant Jafar Sani Bello praying the court to nullify the party primaries that produced Abba Kabir Yusuf as the governorship candidate of the PDP.

    The plaintiff, Jafar Sani Bello through his counsel, Abdul Adamu Fagge told the court that Abba Kabir Yusuf did not fulfil the requirement of being the party flagbearer in the forthcoming general elections.

    Barrister Abdul Adamu Fagge said since his client came second in the primaries, he should be given the right to represent the party as Abba Kabir Yusuf did not fulfil the criteria to contest.

    However, Counsel to the first defendant, Barrister Bashir Yusuf Muhammad requested the court to strike out the suit as it lack jurisdiction to hear the case.

    In his ruling on Monday, the presiding judge, Justice AT Badamosi, strike out the case said the Plaintiff Counsel filing of the process of the suit was faulty.

    Speaking to reporters, after the judgment, the lawyer of the first defendant Barrister Bashir Yusuf Muhammad of Maigari Partners said the verdict does not come as a surprise considering the facts presented before the court.

    Also the Plaintiff Counsel Abdul Adamu Fagge said they would study the judgement with his client and take a decision.

    However, the PDP flag bearer Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf called on the party’s supporters to unite for the victory of PDP in all positions come 2019.

    In a statement signed by the candidate’s spokesperson, Mr Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa said the judgment has proven the right decision of the PDP delegates in Kano who massively voted for Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf as candidate capable of transforming Kano into an economically viable State.

     

  • Kano: Crisis deepens as Aspirants accuse police of double standard

    The crisis in the Kano state chapter of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has continued to linger unabated following the party’s inability to conduct its gubernatorial primaries, as police barricaded Maraba Cinema venue of the exercise to avoid breakdown of law and order.

    Kano PDP governorship primaries earlier scheduled for last Sunday was later postponed by the national headquarters pending resolution of the challenges bedeviling the party in Kano.

    A staunch member of Kwankwasiyya Group of PDP Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam who is also a running-mate to an aspirant, Malam Abba Kabir Yusuf, accused the Police acting the script of the Federal Government to cripple the party structure in Kano.

    According to him, the security agencies have no authority to prevent the opposition party from holding its lawful primaries.

    Abdulsalam, former Commissioner for State Affairs under Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s administration as Governor of Kano state also challenged the Police from preventing the Kwankwasiyya members from accessing the Lugard House, Kwankwasiyya headquarters in the state.

    According to him, PDP in Kano would not be intimidated by the Police from carrying out their lawful primaries.

    “We are all from Kano and we have the right of associate to belong to political party of our choice. We are aware the federal government and APC are jittering and intimidated of Kano PDP because of our strong and massive support. But we would not be intimidate we would go ahead to conduct our primaries let the Police come and kill all of us. The Police have no right to stop us from conducting political activities.” Abdulsalam lamented.

    Also reacting, the Director, Campaign Organization of Alhaji Salihu Sagir Takai, a governorships aspirant, Barr. Faruq Iya Sambo said the party was still waiting for the Police for approval to conduct its primaries.

    He said delegates from across the party’s structure are ready for the primaries to vote their choice but the sealing of the venue of the primaries has dampened the enthusiasm of delegates drawn from the 44 Local Government Areas of the state.

    When contacted the Police spokesperson in Kano, SP Magaji Musa Majiya said the Police was acting on a Court Order on the PDP leadership tussle in Kano.

    Majiya said there was existing Court Order which reversed the dissolution of the party leadership in the state and should be maintained.

    The Nation recalls that the Prince Uche Secondus-led National Working Committee of the PDP had directed the dissolution of the Senator Masa’ud El-Jubrin Doguwa-led PDP Kano executive, replacing it with a Caretaker Committee led by Rabi’u Sulaiman Bichi, a staunch associate of Senator Kwankwaso and former Secretary to the State Government.

    No fewer than eight aspirants are presently jostling for the PDP gubernatorial flag in Kano.
