    • Ex-Appeal Court Justice dies at 70

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Remuneration Committee, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), have mourned a retired Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ahmad Olarewaju Belgore.

The Nation learnt that Justice Belgore, who was the Presiding Justice of the Ilorin Division of the appellate court, died on Tuesday night.

He retired from the Court of Appeal on April, 18, 2023 on attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.

Governor AbdulRazaq commiserated with the family of the deceased, describing the late Justice Belgore as great jurist and patriot.

The governor, in a condolence message, noted that the late Justice Belgore was a legal giant and a foremost community leader who offered his shoulder for many to lean on.

He prayed Allaah to forgive the late Justice Belgore’s shortcomings, admit him to Al-Jannah Fir’daus and give his family and other mourners the fortitude to bear the loss.

In a statement by his spokesman, Mallam Abdulazeez Arowona, Emir Gambari said: “This is a great and colossal loss that has befallen Ilorin Emirate and humanity at large.

“Inna lillahi waina ilaehin raji’un (From Allah did we come and to Him shall we return). It is with shock that I received the news of the demise of Justice Ahmad Belgore.

“He was a complete gentleman, a thorough judicial officer who served the nation meritoriously in various capacities and nationally and internationally.”

The emir also prayed Almighty Allaah to accept his good deeds, forgive his shortcomings and admit him into Al-Janatul Fir’daos.

    • Hamzat: Tinubu’s economic reforms yielding results

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has urged Muslims to pursue peace and progress in the country.

AbdulRazaq stated this in a message sent to Nigerian Muslims from Saudi Arabia, where he had gone to perform lesser hajj.

He described the mammoth crowd at the holy Mosque in Makkah as a remembrance of the oneness of the human community and the need to strive for peace and progress.

“The large gathering at the blessed House of Allah is a remembrance of the oneness of the human community and the need for us to act as such in our daily endeavours for peace and progress,” he said.

The governor also enjoined Muslims in the country to take advantage of the end of Ramadan to seek God’s blessings on the human race, Kwara, Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu, his team and everyone.

“It is a moment for introspection and a time to seek the blessings of God on the human race, our state, Kwara, Nigeria, President Tinubu and his team, and everyone,” he said.

Also speaking from Saudi Arabia, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, stressed the need for the citizens to always pray for the nation and governments at federal, state and local government levels.

Dr. Hamzat who gave the charge in Makkah, on Saturday, during a Ramadan lecture organised by the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board for its Umrah (lesser hajj) pilgrims, noted that it was the prayers of Prophet Ibrahim that metamorphosed the hitherto desert nation of Saudi Arabia into what it is today.

He added that no leader deliberately goes out to inflict pains and agonies on the citizenry or desire to fail, stressing that the importance of divine intervention cannot be over emphasized.

According to him, the reform of the federal government in the subsidy removal is already bearing fruits as the nation’s monthly oil consumption has reduced by a billion litre, wondering where the reduced billion litre was going before the subsidy removal.

The Deputy Governor opined that the total amount hitherto spent on subsidy was much more than the total budgets of the Federal Ministries of Works, Education and Health combined.

He said that those hitherto benefitting from subsidy removal were powerful people and as such, it should be expected that they would fight back, hence, he urged the citizens to support the President with their prayers for him to succeed.

Hamzat noted that nations do not develop by the curses or vituperation of citizens on social media, hence, he admonished them to desist from such acts.

Dignitaries in attendance at the lecture include the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Hon Justice Kazeem Alogba; members of the Governor’s Advisory Council such as Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Messrs Tunde Balogun and Mutiu Are.

Others are members of the State Executive Council; current and former members of the Lagos State House of Assembly; members of the Board of Permanent Secretaries and some General Managers and Heads of Agencies.

AbdulRazaq launches $500m World Bank-backed food security programme

Kwara state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has launched the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) in the state.

The six-year $500 million food security programme is supported by the World Bank and the federal government.

Both the federal government and the World Bank have hailed the governor for providing quality leadership and platforms for livestock value chain production and commercialisation in the state.

The administration has invested in the development of the livestock sector to maximise its potential, particularly in beef and dairy production, the governor said at the launch of the project in the state capital.

He noted: “Kwara has a comparative advantage in all areas of livestock production, particularly in beef and dairy production. It serves as a form of income and wealth for families to better access financial services. It is a major form of financial instrument to families, especially now that we are talking about financial inclusion, improvement in the standard of living, and improving our GDP in the state.

“This is why our focus has been on developing, upgrading, and transforming the economy in terms of livestock development. This has had positive impacts on smallholder farmers while also reducing farmer-herder conflict in the state.

“We aim to ensure that the smallholder farmers become commercial farmers so that they can respond to the demand for quality food from the urban centres, climate change, contribution to the global economy and also ensure that families have an adequate supply of animal protein and improved livelihood.

“For these reasons, our administration keyed into programmes like the special agro-processing zone and livestock productivity and resilience support project that we are flagging off today.

“Indeed, the utmost objective is in line with our administration’s vision of uplifting the vulnerable, improving the activities of smallholder farmers, providing critical infrastructure for modern livestock production and also mitigating the clash between pastoralists and crop farmers.”

AbdulRazaq called for improved coordination and synergy for the design and implementation of SAP-Z and L-PRES, given the similarities of the projects.

“We should also work alongside RAAMP (Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project) to make sure we deliver. We will strive to engage more progressively to make sure we deliver this project on time,” he added.

Earlier, National Project Coordinator for L-PRES Sanusi Abubakar said they are excited at the enthusiasm so far shown by Governor AbdulRazaq to revamp and provide platforms for upgrading and modernisation of livestock value chain in the state.

The objectives of the L-PRES development objective are to improve productivity, commercialisation, and resilience of targeted livestock value chain in Nigeria as well as strengthen the resilience of livelihood affected by farmers-herders conflict, he added.

Abubakar added that Kwara is among the five states being visited during this implementation mission out of fifteen states on the programme.

“This is in consideration of early fulfillment of readiness and eligibility criteria as stated in the project documents. Apart from the fact that Kwara has the largest disbursement of three million dollars, it is also the first state to appreciate disbursement twice since the inception of this project, having already been disbursed in the last quarter of the year 2023,” he said.

“Your Excellency, our mission here in Kwara is for us to interface with the project implementation team at the state coordination office as well as the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“We are very optimistic that Kwara will succeed in this regard, given the enabling environment granted by your administration and the enormous livestock potentials in the state, such as arable land animal feed production, large vegetation for grazing and considerable livestock population. This is also in addition to peaceful co-existence that exists among various ethnic groups in the state.”

AbdulRazaq, Ododo seek President’s intervention on Ilorin-Lojoja road

Kwara and Kogi States’ Governors AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Ahmed Ododo have sought President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the dualisation of the deteriorating Ilorin-Lojoja road.

The governors said the President’s intervention was crucial for the dualisation of the road, which extends to Makurdi and Gboko in neighbouring Benue State, as well as Republic of Benin.

They said President Tinubu’s help to upgrade the road would also boost the economy and help in the development of Nigeria’s solid mineral and agricultural sectors.

The governors spoke when they visited Works Minister Dave Umahi in Abuja.

AbdulRazaq, who is also the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), hailed President Tinubu for his administration’s interventions on several roads across the country.

The Kwara governor hoped that the Federal Government would provide the funds to make the dualisation of the Ilorin-Lojoja road a reality.

“The primary purpose of this visit is to encourage the Federal Government to look into the Ilorin-Lokoja dualisation of the Federal highway. It’s a very major important road, which is not just an economic road. It is a belt of solid minerals in Nigeria and an agricultural belt. That road will open up the entire region for business, for commerce, and for agriculture,” he said.

Umahi assured the governors that the Federal Government, under the Renewed Hope administration of President Tinubu was committed to addressing the accumulated road infrastructural needs of the country.

The minister said doing so would contribute progressively to the reinvigoration of the national and sub-national economies.

Key decisions AbdulRazaq took to ease things for Kwarans

    • By Ibraheem Abdullateef

During his inauguration on May 29, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared that fuel subsidy is gone. Fuel subsidy removal was part of the economic reforms the President promised to implement during his campaigns to place Nigeria on a path of prosperity. He asserted that the petrol subsidy regime increasingly favoured the rich more than the poor. “Subsidy can no longer justify its ever-increasing costs in the wake of drying resources,” President Tinubu said in his inaugural speech.

The President has also gone to implement another major economic policy about foreign exchange. He sought to unify both the official and parallel market rates by floating the naira (Nigeria’s legal tender).

These two major policies have had biting effects on Nigerians of various categories. Fuel prices have gone up, affecting the cost of transportation and production. Consequently, the prices of commodities have also soared in the market.

President Tinubu has, at various times, acknowledged the challenges caused by these two policies. He has therefore continued to empathise with the people and seek their understanding to pull through, saying the hardship they face will be temporary.

The federal government has lined up different strategies and measures to lessen the impact of the policies on people. At a National Economic Council (NEC) meeting convened by Vice President Kashim Shettima and attended by the governors and select ministers and other government officials, the subnational government were also urged to introduce measures to complement the federal government’s in facilitating relief for the people.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq notably led the charge when on July 24, 2023, he announced multi-billion naira palliatives cutting across different sectors and segments of the state.

On top of the palliatives AbdulRazaq announced was a cash support of N10,000 for public sector workers which commenced same month (July) and has been in place till the moment. The Governor said the cash support is to enable workers cope with the economic shocks created by subsidy removal and will last until a new minimum wage is introduced. In the 2024 budget he has assented to, there is a consideration for the new minimum wage. What this shows is that Kwara is fully prepared and will be a forerunner in implementing the new minimum wage.

Another important measure the Governor announced to bring succour to the people was his approval of the payment of new hazard and skipping allowances, and 100% CONMESS and CONHESS for medical doctors and health workers under the state government’s payroll. A major implication of this incentive is that it will check the attrition rate in the state’s health sector.

Kwara State similarly charted a template which is now being adopted by other states, including Lagos of recent. The Governor directed the leadership of the civil service to implement a staggered work schedule — not exceeding three days a week — to reduce transport expenses on workers. The policy is still being implemented as designed by the civil service bureaucrats.

It’s also recalled that AbdulRazaq inaugurated a task force headed by Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi to check the hoarding of fuel among petrol stations. Various stations had hoarded fuel waiting to sell at a higher price when President Tinubu declared fuel subsidy gone. With the efforts and activities of the task force however, the fuel stations were forced to sell to people, thereby ending the painful long queues in the state capital and other parts of the state.

Governor AbdulRazaq promptly opened a floodgate of support to vulnerable households, including communities and MSMEs through the Kwara State Social Investment Programmes (KWASSIP) as a form of relief to pull through this phase, while also supporting the growth of the informal economy with grants during these difficult times. At least 124, 107 households have been reached. This included N20,000 for 20,000 petty traders; N25,000 for 8,000 unemployed youths; N30,000 for vulnerable households; N50,000 for skilled and unskilled workers; N10,000 for 60,000 beneficiaries; and N1,000,000 each for 150 farmers to boost food security in the state. Remarkably, it was in the heat of the fuel subsidy removal that the fourth edition of Kwapreneur held, where no less than 368 SMEs benefitted from non-interest loans between N200,000 and N2,000,000 from the state government.

For the student constituency, the Governor directed the payment of N10,000 each to all of them in public-owned tertiary institutions across the country. It was a one-off payment that was delivered transparently. In addition to that was a free bus ride for students of tertiary institutions in the state.

Meanwhile, the Governor also named a non-partisan committee led by a former commissioner of police Ebun Oluwarotimi, supported by the Emir of Shonga Dr. Haliru Yahya, religious leaders, representatives of the civil society, among others, to oversee the distribution of the N2bn rice palliative of the Federal Government. The distribution was impactful as it reached deserving members of the society.

The Governor has built on that to again distribute another round of rice palliative — this time funded by the state government — extending the total number to over 500, 000 households across the state. Testimonies abound on how beneficial the gesture has been in cushioning the hardship of the people and maintaining social stability.

To beat down the surging price of food, Kwara State Government distributed 40,000 bags of maize at 44.5% of market value to different stakeholders in the poultry and fishery (feed mill) sectors. Four months after, a recent report by Daily Trust listed Kwara as one of states where the price of grains dropped, underscoring its impact.

Earlier in February, the government committed N1,031,149,451.36 to offset the salary arrears owed local government workers, basic school teachers, and pensioners by the last administration. Between January 2020 and January 2024, the administration spent at least N5.5bn to clear the backlogs in phases.

According to a statement by Ministry of Finance on Thursday, Kwara State Government has allocated another N3bn to finally clear ALL the balances of salary arrears for SUBEB teachers and local government workers inherited from the administration of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

These arrears for the different categories of workers dated back to 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

As part of the government’s efforts to boost the purchasing powers of workers at this time, AbdulRazaq also approved cash-backing for the implementation of 2022 promotion for teaching and non-teaching staff of the SUBEB. He had earlier done so for all the previous years he inherited across cadres and professions.

As a further measure of its commitment to doing more to support the people, Kwara State Government, again, has now approved Mass Transit buses for tertiary institutions to aid the transportation of students and staff with a 50% fare reduction for an initial period of four-week beginning from Monday, March 19, 2024.

Away from the multi-layered measures listed above, AbdulRazaq is seen to be deeply empathetic and engaging by the citizens. He recently engaged leaders of various cadres of society including artisans, traders, transporters, students and youths leadership, and labour unions as a way of fostering collaborations, where he highlighted what the government is doing to ensure stability now, as well as long term plans for a #GreaterKwara.

Governor AbdulRazaq will continue to do more as the state resources permit to bring ease to our people during these tough times. Tough times don’t last; tough people do. The good thing is that Kwarans can keep faith in the government as it’s led by a listening governor.

Leadership of the National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Kwara State have applauded Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for what they described as his pro-masses programmes aimed at cushioning the effects of fuel subsidy removal and hike cost of living.

Speaking at a news conference in Ilorin on Wednesday, National President of the NAKSS, Comrade Abdulwahab Arewa, and his NANS counterpart, Comrade Issa Abdulgafar, appealed to the Governor to continue to prioritize the interest of students, especially at this critical time.

The students’ leadership, who commended Governor Abdulrazaq for prioritising welfare of students, even before economic hardship in the country, said that the Governor had proven to be a humble and proactive man, “who never gets tired of listening to the yearnings of the students, as improvement of our affairs has always remained a topmost part of his agenda.

“The Governor has also approved most of our pressing demands, including the annual bursary payment, scholarship for Law students as well as some other palliatives that are tailored towards alleviating the economic hardship on the students”.

The students also wanted inclusion of private school students schooling in Kwara state in the students’ bursary disbursement.

On the current state of the economy and its resultant challenges, the students said: “As good and patriotic ambassadors, our spirit must remain unbowed as things will soon turn around for better. This is only a step towards achieving economic transformation and reformation which we all crave for.

“Let us remain hopeful and optimistic as the Kwara state government, under the purposeful leadership of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, is judiciously deploying resources at her disposal to make life easier for people, especially students in the state. Aside from the palliatives being given to students, various strategic measures have also been put in place to address the rising cost of food and other basic amenities in the State.”

They urged students across the State not to be manipulated or used as agents of disrupting the peace and serenity of the state by any individual or group.

“As a result of this, I urge you all to remain calm and hopeful in the cause of building a new nation that will be full of great opportunities for all of us to thrive. We must not allow ourselves to be manipulated or used as agents of destructing the peace and serenity of the state by any individual or group. We must, at all time, ensure that our hope in a New Nigerian remains very much alive,” the student leaders said.

AbdulRazaq restates commitment to welfare as cabinet okays township roads, others

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said public welfare in form of continuous cash award to workers and other palliatives as well as support for different segments of the State remain top priorities, acknowledging the impact of inflation on the living standard of the people and provision of public services.

The Governor said the administration has consistently supported and will continue to support the people as inflation erodes purchasing power across the world.

Outside of the standard wage commitment before the subsidy removal last year, the government now commits nearly N1bn extra every month to pay cash award to different categories of workers and pensioners across the state — aside from the payment of 100% CONHESS, COMES and COMESC, which has raised monthly commitment of the government by 54.01% in the health subsector alone, the Governor added.

AbdulRazaq was speaking during a cabinet meeting  where the State Executive Council approved inflation-induced upward reviews of contract sums for some road projects across the state, including the Banni township road (Kaiama); Ora township road (Ifelodun); Saint Claire’s Junction-Ikotun Road, Offa; Secretariat Road-New Market Road Lafiagi; and Igbaja Town Hall Road.

“The government will continue to support the people at this time and always, as we have been doing. More initiatives are also in the work, including food support. It is true that allocation rose following subsidy removal. But so has our wage bill and commitments. We have recorded a rise in monthly allocation (FAAC), which is an average of N1.5bn.

“But it may interest you that, as a state, we spend a little below N1bn on the wage award alone every month. What about the implementation of 100% CONHESS and others, apart from other interventions and support for the people? Our wage bill has risen.

“A lot more is being planned, including at the federal level. We definitely do not deny the impact of inflation, which also affects even the cost of providing public services to the people. Together, we will get over this time,” the Governor said.

He said the administration on its own — at different times — has spent a lot of money to procure and distribute rice to the public in a show of support for the masses.

Between May 2023 and now, the government has implemented different layers of social safety programmes which benefitted at least 124,170 people, 368 SMEs that got support through Kwapreneur, and 20 groups that were supported through the state-funded empowerment initiatives, according to the Governor.

Amounts totalling N5,740,600,000 were spent to support the households, while Kwapreneur beneficiaries got between 250,000 and N3m to support their businesses.

In different memoranda to the council, Ag. Commissioner for Works and Transport requested and secured council’s approval for variations in the cost of contract sums for the affected road projects, which had been stalled as a result of inflationary pressures. He said the reviews would allow for immediate completion of the projects for the benefits of the people.

The cabinet approved the award of rehabilitation and upgrade of the long dilapidated indoor sports complex at the Kwara State Stadium Complex at N2,069,425,371.55k to Messr Disscom Ltd. 3

In a memorandum to the cabinet, executive chairman of the Sports Commission Mallam Bolakale Mogaji said the procurement process has received a letter of no-objection from the Kwara State Procurement Agency, adding that the project will attract a lot of opportunities to the state, including national and international tournaments, sports conferences, festivals and youth games.

The Governor commended the former military administrator George Innih for the historic investments that made the facility one of the best in Nigeria at the time.

He regretted that the outcry over the N35m cost of the project in 1977 stampeded the contract, denying the state the opportunity of having its full benefits.

“Today, what could have been completed with N35m in those years cannot be done with N100bn now,” he added, commending the former Governor for his foresight, which some persons protested against.

The indoor sports hall complex was last renovated in 1991 during the World Military Games held in Kwara State, according to information on the facility.

The complex houses indoor sports like table tennis, indoor tennis (formerly lawn tennis), volleyball, basketball, handball, five-aside football, boxing, judo, karate, wrestling, and badminton.

Youth development crucial to us, says AbdulRazaq at Kwara book festival

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said the administration will continue to empower the youths, nurture their talents and equip them with necessary skills to thrive in the evolving world.

He said the government prioritises youth development, thereby investing in projects that create opportunities for them to explore, experiment and express themselves freely.

The Governor was speaking in Ilorin at the Kwara Books and Arts Festival (KWABAFEST), an event designed to celebrate creativity, innovation, and the boundless potential of youth in the state.

The programme, which is the second in the series, was put together by a team of young people led by Mr. Abdulbasit Hossein with the theme: “Transcendence”.

It featured panel discussions where panelists spoke on the importance of record keeping, the need to improve access to data about creatives and cultural heritage, how economic situation affects the creative industry, and how young people can master their arts.

“At the heart of our administration’s vision lies a steadfast commitment to empowering our youth, nurturing their talents, and equipping them with the skills and opportunities they need to thrive in an ever-changing world,” the Governor said this through the Commissioner for Communications Hon Bola Olukoju who represented him.

“Today, I am honored to share with you some of the initiatives and projects that we have undertaken to realize this vision and unlock the full potential of our youth. First and foremost, we recognize that creativity knows no bounds, and our youth are the torchbearers of innovation and imagination.

“That is why we have invested in initiatives such as the Visual Arts Centre, the Ilorin Innovation Hub, the Film Factory, and the Garment Factory—spaces where young minds can explore, experiment, and express themselves freely. These hubs of creativity not only provide avenues for artistic expression but also serve as incubators for entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth.”

AbdulRazaq, who described literacy as a foundation for all other forms of learning, said the launch of the technology based  KwaraLEARN by his government was to revolutionize learning and literacy development in the state.

By harnessing the power of technology, we are breaking down barriers to education, expanding access to quality learning resources, and empowering our youth to unlock their full potential, he said.

The Governor also said that the government is keen to promote and preserve cultural identity through initiatives that celebrate diversity, foster cultural exchange, and promote social cohesion, adding “culture is the lifeblood of our communities”.

He commended the organiser and those who have contributed to the success of the festival that he noted was driven by dedication, passion, and commitment to youth empowerment.

“This book festival is a positive reference point that has put Kwara on the map, and we are glad to associate with the young people who are the architects of the initiative. We hope to see the festival become bigger and a major rallying point for creative minds in northern Nigeria and Nigeria as a whole”.

Director of KWABAFEST, Abdulbasit Hossein, said the programme was organised to tell the original story of the state, and to serve as a platform to host and  nurture future voices in literature.

He said Kwara is at the forefront in the arts, creativity and film making, and deserves to be projected well to the larger society.

“We realised that the state is not seen as a harbor of creatives, and it is important for us to put in place things like this. People often go to Lagos or Abuja for any kind of support in the creative industry. But why not Kwara, which has the largest waterfall in the whole of Africa? This is a state that has produced many names in terms of art, creativity, film making, yet it is being sidelined,” he said.

“Kwara state has new voicers in literature, and just like some of us will argue this state has the future voice in Nigeria literature. If a state that has the future voice of Nigeria literature does not have a platform where we can host and nurture these voicers then we have a big challenge, and this is what the KWABAFEST wants to achieve”.

Dr Lafiagi, one of the panelists, who spoke on how the economy affects the artistic works, said it is important for Nigerian citizens, especially the talented youth, to do away with a sense of entitlement and see the current economic downturn as a means to think outside the box to improve the economy.

“The economic situation of the country is actually affecting everyone. But as a youth we can take positivity out of the negative situation. And that is, the economic situation should actually force us to harness our God given talents,” he said.

Another panelist, Dr. Abdulkareem, described the event as insightful given that it underscores the importance of using research to foster record keeping and access to data about cultural heritage, and how to preserve them.

Hike in prices of commodities: Abdulrazaq parleys with labour unions, transporters, others

Kwara governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has parleyed with different segments of the state on the current hike in prices of commodities in the country.

He also reiterated the efforts of his government at easing things for the people.

The engagements involved labour union chiefs, transport sector leaders, artisans, leadership of the market unions, and students drawn from varying backgrounds in the state.

The governor said that different federal government committees are working round the clock to plug the spiraling fall in the value of the naira and its impacts on consumer goods, while different measures are taken to ease the effects on the public.

He said the government is immediately working to reduce the cost of key staple foods by releasing grains from the strategic reserve and distributing same to the people at intervals.

He said the devaluation of the naira meant that merchants from neighbouring countries are mopping up grains from Nigeria because it is far cheaper to buy from the country and then resell at higher prices in their own countries, especially in the West African subregion.

Acknowledging the spike in inflation, the governor urged the people to be patient and that the government’s investments in gas-powered vehicles will soon manifest when the vehicles are eventually distributed in the coming months.

He also commended the Kwara State University for its initiative on gas-powered vehicles, which he said the government will continue to encourage.

He said the state government will soon deploy more vehicles to different parts of the state to support people’s movement, especially students who come from different homes, while grains will soon be distributed to the people as a form of support.

“You will observe that due to the removal of fuel subsidy and the step taken on foreign exchange by the Federal government, there is inflation in the country. The government is working hard to address the resultant challenges,” he said at each of the meetings with the stakeholders.

“Our major problem is foreign exchange. We are getting US dollars from sales of crude oil, whereas we have low sales at the moment. We used to experience pipeline vandalism. But, since the assumption of Tinubu’s government, production of oil has increased. Not only that, the government realised recently that the crude oil we are, and will be, getting in the next six months or so had been sold in advance. So, they don’t get value for whatever they are selling now. But gradually, things will change, and we need your support to understand us.

“The government has started ordering gas-powered vehicles and is making serious efforts to stabilise the Naira. But more importantly now is how to address the hike of food prices. We held a meeting this afternoon. I joined them through zoom, and it is a continuation of previous meetings. The government is launching programmes to checkmate the rising food prices.”

He said the government is not taking the issue of insecurity lightly, citing the immediate arrest of abductors in Ekiti LG of the state by the combined security agencies.

AbdulRazaq appreciated the labour movement and every segment of the state for their continued understanding and dialogue, as the government strives to meet their demands in phases.

“Our main challenge now is the new minimum wage. Now that a tripartite committee has been set up at the federal level, we are looking forward to setting up our own at the state level basically to be prepared for what is going on at the federal level,” he said.

State Chairman for the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Comrade Joseph Tunde Meshach, NLC Chairman Comrade Saheed Olayinka, and NUT representative, in their separate remarks, commended the Governor for making the welfare of workers a priority, and for the ongoing efforts to relieve the pains from fuel subsidy removal.

Meshach lauded the government’s decision to upgrade Kwara Hotel to a standard that it deserves, saying the facility occupies a strategic place and deserves a top-notch upgrade the government is giving it.

“On the issue of Kwara Hotel workers, we thank Your Excellency very much for paying their (workers’) salary as and when due. We also want to congratulate you on the work being done on (Kwara Hotel) in order to give us a more befitting one,” the TUC Chairman said, acknowledging the open-door policy of the administration with the labour movement.

Olayinka, on his part, said AbdulRazaq was the the first Governor to introduce palliative as a means of reducing the burden affecting the common man, especially the fixed income earners, saying such was commendable.

The labour leaders said they want more to be done for the workers, nonetheless.
