  • Abia carpets Anglican bishops, says attack on govt borne out of personal malice

Abia carpets Anglican bishops, says attack on govt borne out of personal malice

Abia State government on Saturday carpeted bishops of the Anglican Church in the state who condemned the decision of the state government to lay off from the state civil service those who were employed into the state’s civil service at the twilight of the administration of former governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

The Nation had reported that the state government in a recent statement announced the sacking of those employed by the Ikpeazu government this is even as the government announced that it had been able to fish out about 7000 ghost workers in the ongoing verification exercise in the state civil service.

But the bishops of the Anglican Church, Aba Diocese in a communiqué signed by Ven. Innocent A. Ogbonna,  His Lordship, Clerical Synod Secretary; and Rt. Rev. Christian C. Ugwuzor,JP (Diocese of Aba), Bishop of Aba Diocese, (Anglican Communion) which was issued at the end of the third session of its 17th Synod on Thursday, among other issues raised in the communiqué, condemned the sacking of workers by the Alex Otti’s led government, urging the state government to recall the sacked workers.

However, the Abia State governor, responding to the issue of the sacked workers as raised by the Anglican bishops, in a statement issued by his Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma on Saturday, accused one of the signatories to the communiqué of dragging other bishops of the church into what he described as the personal malice of the said individual against the state government just to accord the statement much-needed importance.

Mr. Ekeoma while accusing the said signatory of persuading Governor Otti to recall a close relative who was among the affected sack workers, also alleged that the said person also prevailed on the governor of the state to confirm a factional Chairman of NULGE in the state against the will of majority of the union executive and members, and also to support the imposition of a certain traditional ruler as the state Chairman Traditional Rulers Council.

Ferdinand’s claims in the statement read “the said signatory had made a request to the Governor to exclude and allow his daughter who was a beneficiary of the March 2023 fake employment carried out by the previous government, after it had lost election, to remain in the Civil Service.

“However, the governor turned down the request on the grounds that it would be unjust to exclude or recall one person out of the several people affected.

“The same Signatory had also made two other futile requests to the governor which included:  endorsing and confirming a factional Chairman of NULGE in Abia against the will of the majority of the union executive and members, and also to support the imposition of a certain traditional ruler as Chairman Traditional Rulers Council. The Governor turned down these requests because they were unhealthy and self-serving.

“Given the above, it is difficult to accept the pieces of advice as altruistic.

“It was important that the church admitted that there’s obvious dilapidation of road infrastructure which has given rise to various socio-political and economic vices in the state.

“This implies that their expectation is that Governor Otti would apply measures that could have the propensity to disrupt the Abia norm of negativity and apply a workable and progressive strategy that can ignite prosperity for all.

“It’s equally interesting that the church seriously frowns at the last-minute employment carried out by the Ikpeazu government. We understand that the Synod’s disapproval of last-minuteIkpeazu’s decision was predicated on their conviction that it was a politically motivated sham whose purpose was deceitful.

“Having rightly expressed their opposition to that unjustifiable last minute employment sham, we are therefore surprised that the Anglican Synod turned around to disagree with the Alex Otti led-government over its decision to invalidate that act of deceit that was obviously a booby trap for the Otti government. This contradiction leaves many questions unanswered.

“For further elucidation, we would like to remind our revered Lordships and other members of the Synod that the Civil Service is naturally structured to run an organized system predicated on adherence to laid down guidelines and extant laws in the recruitment of workers. It’s not meant to function like a market where entry is without scrutiny or restrictions; hence the under listed ten guidelines are followed strictly.

“These processes were completely ignored as no vacancies were declared and no transparent process of employment was followed. Smuggling someone’s name into the nominal rolls does not imply that employment has taken place.

“With no vacancies for employment declared, how do you surreptitiously and from the back door, process thousands of people and claim they were employed by the same government that was owing several months of accumulated salary and pension arrears which it blamed on an over-bloated workforce.

“After cleaning up the mess in the Civil Service and creating genuine job opportunities, the Otti led-government would properly employ Abians where they will be productive and useful to themselves and to the Government.

“It is also important to state that this government has not and will not disengage any staff who was genuinely hired into the civil service.

“Finally, Governor Otti wishes to assure the Anglican church that he holds the church in high esteem and thus would continue to see the church and its leaders as progressive partners, but wishes to call on the leadership of the church to caution individuals who might want to subject the church to public ridicule in pursuit of selfish interests.”

Abia LP Reps candidate heads to Appeal Court after defeat at Tribunal

The member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency, Emeka Nnamani on Wednesday, September 13, urged his supporters not to panic after a ruling of the National Assembly Tribunal that sat in the state sacked him.

Nnamani urged his supporters to remain calm as he affirmed that he remained the member representing the Federal Constituency until the final part of the judgement, stressing that he is sure that he would retain his seat to continue to serve Aba at the National Assembly.

The Nation reports that on Monday, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, Abia State capital, led by Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe reportedly sacked Nnamani, who is a member of the Labour Party and ordered that a certificate of return be issued to the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Alex Ikwechegh.

Our correspondent reports that after the tribunal judgement, many media outlets have been reporting that the tribunal sacked Nnamani because of certificate forgery.

Others equally reported that there was a court ruling banning him from participating in elections for ten years, but the lawmaker elected on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) at the briefing debunked and described it as a lie from the pit of hell.

“There was nothing like the court banning me Emeka Nnamani from contesting an election in 10 years. That’s a fallacy and a fabrication from the pit of hell used regularly by opposition parties to pull us back.

“The records of what the court said at that time in 2015 are there. I do not want to bring the competent of the court into question because our jurisprudence is a perfect one and works according to the evidence available to them.

“As of 2015, there were hiccups that my opponent took advantage of mentioning the institution they mentioned and the institution has since then said that they had issues with the exams and records of the school which led to misplacement of some records when they were moving from analogue to digital records keeping.

“There were cases of missing records and somebody went to that institution and took advantage of such a problem. But since then, the institution has cleared me.”

Explaining further, Nnamani said that in the 2023 Tribunal, four petitions were brought against him and his party, the Labour Party.

“In the midway, APC and AA withdrew which I’m grateful for because they saw no reason to help in my distraction and the effect it would have on my Constituency.

“The PDP and APGA decided to continue with the petition and in court, they brought a quite number of things ranging from the issue of election, areas where election didn’t hold.

“They also brought issues of INEC’s unpreparedness for the election, people they felt were disenfranchised and purportedly claimed that those people would have voted for them.

“The Court threw those issues away and upheld my election on that section. APGA also claimed that I participated in their primaries which is not true because I never knew when it took place.

“Again, they brought the 2015 case where the judges were misled thinking that I didn’t graduate from the institution they mentioned at that time of which I’ve been cleared.

“The court already has before it a report of police clearance on me that I didn’t have any case of forgery. We all know that for you to substantiate any case of forgery in the Nigerian Constitution, there has to be a police report.

“However in 2015, there was none. Rather the court requested that any party involved or any interested party has the liberty to go to the police and make a complaint and they also asked the police to investigate and possibly prosecute.”

Sources in the area told our correspondent that it took the efforts of the personnel of the Nigerian Army Ohafia 14 Brigade attached to 144 Battalion, Ukwa West Local Government Area of the state which mobilized its personnel from the Forward Operation Base (FOB), to restore normalcy.

It was gathered that the injured passenger got accelerated treatment from the hospital through the efforts of the army personnel led by one Major Hassan Biu.

According to sources, the incident left commuters from both ends of the expressway stranded Thursday night for more than 1hr 30minutes that the operation lasted.

A commercial driver, Mr. Frank Ginika who narrated the incident said it was scary being on the road in the dark for over an hour.

Ginika further heaped praises on the personnel of the 144 Battalion for their gallantry, adding that if not for their intervention, the gunmen would have had a field day.

    Abia Rep lauds tribunal verdict

Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia state Rep. Obinna Aguocha, has lauded the verdict of the National Assembly election petition tribunal sitting in Umuahia, which affirmed his victory in the February 25 elections.

Aguocha, in a statement on Friday in Abuja. The lawmaker said it was now time to fulfill all promises that were made to his people during the campaigns.

“I have always believed that our courts are the last hope of the common man, and this faith has been reinforced by the verdict,” he said.

The lawmaker extended a hand of fellowship to his political opponents.

He said time has come to begin the task of building the communities and working to ensure that the dividends of their struggle and aspirations were brought to bear.

He also called for support for the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, in his quest to rebuild the state.

He described the journey leading to his victory as tortuous and difficult.

He said, “Because of our unwavering and abiding confidence in the good people of the constituency, it has also been promising and one full of valuable lessons.

“This electoral process has never been about me. It has always been about our people and my belief in the things that matter most to them.”

He urged all hands to be on deck in the quest to reposition the state.

“We are all partners in the Nigerian project and we will continue to use our best endeavours in building a strong and virile democracy,” he said.

The National Election Petition Tribunal on Thursday dismissed the petition filed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chinedu Orji, against Aguocha.

Orji prayed the court to nullify Aguocha’s victory, claiming that he was not duly nominated as the Labour Party candidate and therefore was not qualified to contest the election.

However, ruling in the matter, the tribunal led by Justice Abubakar Kutigi, held that the membership of a political was a pre-election matter.

He also ruled that the petitioner failed to prove that the respondent was not duly nominated by LP, as the issue concerning the candidate of a party in an election is an internal party affair.

The tribunal equally struck out the allegations of overvoting, saying the petitioner failed to prove it beyond every reasonable doubt.

    Abia denies sacking 10,000 workers

The Abia state government has denied the news making rounds that it sacked 10,000 workers in the employ of the state.

The commissioner for information and culture, Okey Kanu made the clarification in an interview with newsmen in Umuahia, the state capital, describing the news as fake and unfounded.

He explained that what happened was that some ghost workers were removed from the payroll of the State government.

Kanu further added that some workers whose names were thrown up during the verification exercise embarked upon by the government as illegally employed were affected too.

According to him, “This group comprised those who were illegally employed from December 2022 and up until March and April this year, long after the current governor had been declared as the duly elected Governor of Abia state.”

He said some of the affected staff had their appointment letters backdated.

The governor noted that their employment was surreptitious and a bait with which to pile underserved pressure on the then-incoming administration of Alex Otti, saying that no responsible government would allow such a situation to subsist.

Kanu also informed that there were no waivers applied in those subject employments as well, adding that, there were officially established processes for employment into the civil service in Abia state and maintained that all such processes were not followed with regards to these employments.

The commissioner also urged Abians and residents of the state to disregard what he described as a “fake story”, about the sacking of ten thousand workers of the state public service system.

He, however, assured them that the administration of Otti was committed to the welfare of the state’s civil servants and pensioners.

He reiterated the governor’s resolve to pay all arrears of salaries and pensions owed to workers and pensioners in the state.

Abia demolishes two-storey building with structural defect

Abia State Government at the weekend demolished a two-storey building in Umuahia, to save lives and property.

A rapid response team comprising Ministries of Lands and Housing, Power & Public Utilities, Works, Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Nigeria Police, Abia State Fire Service, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Nigerian Institute of Town Planners and Nigerian Society of Engineers were on ground to ensure that the structurally-defective building was safely brought down.

The demolition of the building located at 5, Akanu Street, opposite FCMB, near Government House, Umuahia, followed the alarm raised by occupants, who hurriedly evacuated from the building after defects were noticed on the structure sandwiched between two other buildings.

Addressing reporters shortly after the demolition, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, said the objective of the exercise was to save lives.

“The site was cordoned off by UCDA, the road blocked by the fire service, and people in the surrounding area were evacuated by the Nigeria Police, in order to preserve public safety and ensure no casualties were recorded.

“The initial efforts to strip the building block by block, in order to preserve the surrounding structures, were deemed unsafe, and quickly replaced by a swift demolishment of the building, while minimising the damage to surrounding structures,” he said.

The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, who affirmed that the present administration believed in due process, thanked God that no life was lost, enjoining builders to engage the services of professionals.

UCDA General Manager Kenneth Agomoh, a town planner, reiterated the Otti administration’s commitment to restore the integrity and sanity of buildings in the state.

Abia orders sack of civil servants employed by Ikpeazu

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti has directed the sack of civil servants employed in the state civil service between December 2022 till date.

About 7000 workers were alleged to be affected by the new directive.

However, the government in a memo made available to the public didn’t disclose how many workers were affected.

This is even as the government had in the past stated that it had discovered about 3000 ghost workers in the ongoing verification exercise being carried out in the state.

The Nation had reported that workers employed in the state civil service at the twilight of the administration of former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu were part of the people who have not received their salaries since the commencement of the ongoing verification exercise in the state.

The decision of the state government to sack the affected persons was contained in a memo signed by the Head of Service (HoS) Lady Joy Maduka dated 31/8/2023.

The three-paragraph memo read: “Following the ongoing reorganization in the Abia State Public Service and in line with the provision of the Abia State Public Service Rules Nos. O2801 and 02803, I write to inform you that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State has directed the disengagement of all staff employed into the Abia State Public Service from December 2022 till date.

“However, any further directive(s) of His Excellency on this matter shall be communicated in due course.

“Please take appropriate steps to implement immediately and according to His Excellency’s directive.”

It will be recalled that about two days ago, some aggrieved workers of the Abia State civil service had stormed the office of the State Accountant General where they locked her and other staff out of the office in demand as to why their salaries had not been paid.

Meanwhile, members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have condemned the actions of the state governor, which they described as draconian and a witch-hunt of the previous government, which Otti sees nothing good in.

  • Abia civil servants protest salary arrears

Abia civil servants protest salary arrears

Civil servants in Abia State yesterday protested refusal of the government to pay them salary since April.

They reportedly denied the Accountant-General, Njum Onyemenam, access to her office.

It was learnt that the protesting workers claimed they took the action because of the inability of the Accountant-General to pay them their salary arrears.

They alleged that they had not received salary since April for reasons they claimed to have known nothing about, despite the directives given by the governor for salary, including that of April, to be paid.

According to the workers, the Office of the Accountant-General has not been able to give them tangible reasons it has not been paying them.

They claimed that while some have not received their April salary, others have not received May, June and July salaries.

They said efforts to rectify the situation, including approaching the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, have remained unsuccessful.

The workers said inability of the state government to pay them was affecting them, following the removal of fuel subsidy, as they could not afford to pay their rents, medical bills and also meet their family needs.

They said they were not angry with the governor, whom they noted was ready to pay their salaries, but with agents of the government in-charge of salary disbursement.

The workers said they shouldn’t be tagged as ghost workers, explaining that they come to work almost on a daily basis even when some of them have to come from other parts of the state to Umuahia, regardless of the amount they spend on fares.

The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor, Mr. Kazie Uko, said the Accountant-General was not chased out of office as reported in the social media.

Uko, quoting the Accountant-General, said: “There was nothing like chasing me out of my office. As a matter of fact, I was not even in the office.

“I tried driving into the premises and at the same time a few persons, who had been stopped at the gate, tried to take advantage of the situation to gain entry into the compound, but they were prevented.

“I then chose to access my office through an alternative access point, rather than being caught up in a fracas I don’t know anything about.”

The Accountant-General remained silent on the issues raised by the workers at press time.

Reps deputy speaker urges Abia people to embrace Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

The deputy speaker of House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu has called for the revival of all moribund industries in Abia state and the rebuilding of Ariaria international market in Aba.

Kalu also asked the people of the state to key into the renewed hope agenda of the Tinubu government for the greater benefit of the state.

In a statement by his chief press secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, on Sunday to mark the 32nd anniversary of the creation of the state, Kalu said that all hope of a better tomorrow is not lost.

He urged all Abians not to despair in the midst of all the sociopolitical, economic challenges facing them but remain optimistic in the possibility of a better future.

Abia was created on August 27, 1991 by the government of former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida out of old Imo State.

The deputy speaker also urged them to be supportive of the government and performance their civic duties, even as he charged them to hold the government accountable in all their actions and inactions to engender good governance.

While appreciating the steps taken so far on infrastructure and other new policies of government which should include making the “gold mine” of Abia  State, the Ariaria international market to operate effectively, the deputy also called for the reactivation of moribund industries in the State especially in Aba.

He said: “We can reactivate the industries in Aba for which Abia was known for. Industrialisation is also key. We can leverage on the gas-to-energy federal policy and the state’s proximity to gas to achieve this.”

The deputy speaker therefore asked all hands to be on deck for the overall development of the state.
