  • Abiodun is next Ogun governor, says Osinbajo

WITH God and the support of Ogun residents, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the March 2 governorship election, Prince Dapo Abiodun, will be victorious, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday.

His assertion came as the APC national secretariat accused Governor Ibikunle Amosun of masterminding the attack on party leaders at Monday’s presidential campaign rally in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The party vowed to punish the sponsors of the thugs who caused the violence and embarrassed President Muhammadu Buhari and other party leaders at the rally.

He advised the electorate to cast their ballots for APC candidates at the national and state elections billed for Saturday and March 2.

Expressing optimism about Abiodun’s victory at the palace of the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba AbdulRasaq Adenugba, in the company of the APC governorship standard bearer, the vice president called on party members and supporters to be wary of those promoting division and candidates other than APC’s.

Osinbajo was at the palace to seek the monarch’s and chiefs’ support ahead of the general elections.

He reiterated that with APC-controlled government in the state under Abiodun’s watch and re-elected President Buhari in the saddle, the Gateway State would be better for it.

Replying, the Ebumawe described Osinbajo and Abiodun as true sons of Ijebu land. He prayed for their success and urged his people to support them.

The vice president also visited the monarch of Idowa – Ijebu, Oba Yinusa Adekoya.

In a statement, the APC identified Amosun as the mastermind of the violence at the rally.

The thugs infiltrated the MKO Abiola Stadium venue of the rally at in Abeokuta, pelting party leaders, including National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole with stones and sachets of water.

The governor is backing the Allied Progressive Movement (APM) candidate in the March 2 governorship election, Adekunle Akinlade, against his party’s Abiodun.

Supporters of the two candidates had clashed on two occasions.

APC’s National Publicity Secretary Lanre Isa-Onilu said the party would take disciplinary measures against the sponsors of the attack after the elections.

The statement reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) regrets Monday’s premeditated attacks sponsored by Governor Ibikunle Amosun on President Muhammadu Buhari and other senior party leaders at the venue of the presidential campaign rally in Ogun State.

“This is one act of indiscipline too many. The APC will not condone acts of indiscipline, indiscretion and anti-party activities from any party member – no matter how highly placed.

“The party will review this gross misconduct of deliberately positioning thugs to attack and embarras the President and the party’s leadership. The party will take a decision on this matter immediately after the elections.

“It must be stated that party supremacy and discipline, according to our constitution, are not matters of choice but binding principles which must be adhered to by all party members.

“The APC is a party known for discipline, justice, fairness and equality. Hence, any plan to destroy what this party stands for would be rejected. No single person will be allowed to put his personal and selfish interests ahead of the wishes of the people of Ogun State and elsewhere.

“Post primaries, the decision of the National Working Committee to uphold the wishes of party members is unbendable. Therefore, whatever means being presently deployed by persons intending to undermine the wishes of the people for personal gains will not be tolerated.

“We urge our teeming party supporters and members not to be disturbed by Monday’s condemnable incident. We urge all to continue trooping out en masse for our remaining campaigns and vote massively for all and only APC candidates in the forthcoming general elections.”

  • Tension in Ogun as thugs disrupt Presidential rally

    Sacks Abiodun’s Supporters from Stadium

Scores of hoodlums chanting the slogan of a rival opposition governorship candidate on Monday disrupted the Presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and sacked supporters of the Prince Dapo Abiodun, the governorship candidate of APC, from the main bowl of the MKO stadium, Abeokuta

Other APC members and supporters seated awaiting the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari for planned rally, were also chased away as the thugs hurled stones, shoes and other dangerous weapons at them.

Many were injured in the attacks, forcing thousands of people to leave the stadium while the President is yet to arrive.

In less than 10 minutes, all the seats and positions occupied by Dapo Abiodun supporters and other APC members were deserted as stones and objects hurled by the hoodlums, fell on them in torrents.

Some of the hoodlums were overheard brazenly boasting “this is Ogun and nobody can intimidate us” while throwing stones at the fleeing APC members and supporters of Abiodun.

Not even the announcement of the arrival of the wife of the Vice – President, Dolapo Osinbajo, at the time could elicit respite to the reign of terror unleashed on people.

Outside the stadium, dozens of armed soldiers and other security agencies battled to prevent the entry of another batch of hoodlums who were allegedly hurried to the venue to reinforce their colleagues who had seized the main bowl of the main stadium.

Many were appalled that a Fuji musician called to entertain at the occasion, prodded the hoodlums on with inciting lyrics even as those who ought to ensure orderliness at the venue acted as though they were on holiday.

There was palpable concern over the safety of the APC chieftains such as Senator Gbenga Kaka, Abiodun’s running mate, Noimot Oyedele – Salako, Chief Tolu Odebiyi and others, with many wondering if they were able to leave the stadium unscathed.

Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Prince Dapo Abiodun has been on the campaign tour of Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-East, Ijebu North, Remo North, Sagamu and Abeokuta local governments. At the rallies, he promised to bring a new lease of life to the Gateway State, if elected, Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU reports.

HOW far can Prince Dapo Abiodun, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, can go?

The election is less than two weeks. He has been up and doing at rallies. His campaign train has rolled into various wards across the three senatorial districts.

Exciting confidence, he told a crowd of supporters in Abeokuta, the state capital, that he will succeed Governor Ibikunle Amosun. “I will bring a new lease of life to the people of Ogun State” he added.

By and large, he poised to make a difference among the packs. He has admonished party faithful and supporters to be wary of the antics of those who are using the good name of the party to deceive them for their selfish ambition.

Abiodun said some selfish political office seekers may have used the good name of the APC to get into positions  and performed below expectations. But, he said that should not be used as yardsticks to generalise that all politicians are birds of the same feathers.

While addressing APC members and supporters at Isiwo, in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, as part of his ward-to-ward tour of  the 20 local governments, he promised that a new dawn is beckoning.

He said: “Don’t be deceived by some politicians that have gone out on the prowl, knocking at your doors to bring out your Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to take the numbers on them and then, offer you money.

“We can’t be in the same party and we will be making the same mistakes. No! It is not possible. These sets of politicians are not real members of the APC. APC is the party. Broom is the symbol of our party. In all the elections, make sure you cast your votes for the APC.

“By the grace of God and with your support, Buhari isn’t in another party but in the APC. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is our son and we should use our votes to promote and make him great, so that he (Osinbajo) can know that his kinsmen are solidly behind him.

“I want to use this occasion to reiterate my commitment to ensure that I bring my vast experience in the private sector to bear on governance, if I emerge as the governor of the state.”

However, responding to the requests of the monarch of the ancient town, Oba Sikiru Salisu, and the Council of Baales, Abiodun promised to rehabilitate the 15 kilometre road stretching from Ijebu-Ode through Yemoji/Odo-Ladenusi/Oko-Ako/Odo-Lofa and to Isiwo; the construct a culvert linking the various communities; renovate of both public primary and secondary schools; energise the transformers and provide pipe-borne water.

Former APC Ogun East Senatorial district chairman, Alhaji Folorusho Elias, said Abiodun as part of his campaign tour would afford him an on-the-spot assessment of the deplorable road conditions and other amenities that are begging for attention in the communities.

He said the monarch, his subjects and the entire inhabitants have decided to speak with one voice and cast their votes for Abiodun.

He added: “When you get into office help us reconstruct our road from Yemoji through Agboju. Also, help us reconstruct the only culvert linking our various communities. Our unemployed youths are there and we want your government to empower them. We have untapped large expanse of land, if you will need them to set up businesses for our youths.”

While being received by the Alaye, Oba Amindu Osho, Abiodun reiterated his commitment to give priority attention to the development of rural communities through the reconstruction of new roads to link urban centres.

He said although it is important to have flyovers in Abeokuta, rural roads should not be abandoned, just because of the development of the state capital.

The APC candidate said: “Fixing rural roads would ease movement of farm produce and dwellers from one location to another. Also, rural roads connecting adjoining states will be given priority attentions.

“It is also evident that, many communities in the state are without pipe-borne water and regular power supply. We will look into these challenges and attend to them.

“It is common knowledge that, while some governors, having spent eight years in office, have got nothing to show as the electoral promises. But I want to assure you that ours will be different. We will make good our electoral promises.”

To Abiodun, the election is for the greater growth and development of the state. He urged the people to cast their votes en-mass for the APC.

He said: “We are not leaving the APC for another party, because we know it is a great party that can bring dividends of democracy to the people.

“We are going to return power to the local governments, so that council chairmen can perform their statutory duties effectively. Also, we will build multi-healthcare centres in each local government area.

“Those using the portraits of President Buhari as their presidential candidate are not honest to themselves, because they do not belong to our party, the APC.”

Oba Osho said with unfolding events that are in favour of Abiodun, the people are ready to deploy all the resources at their disposal to ensure that they give their support to the APC governorship candidate in the forthcoming general elections.

The monarch said: “Dapo Abiodun is a glorious son of Remoland and he needs our prayers and we will support them.

“He is the governorship candidate we want to see at the Okemosan governor’s office, come May 29, 2019. I have no doubt in my mind, that Abiodun will win. He said: “I want to assure you of my utmost priority for an improvement in the education standard in the State. I would maintain a frequent connection with the students in a bid to listen to their plights through regular town hall meetings, at least, twice every year of my administration.

“I sincerely appreciate the ways and manners at which you have articulated your points and I am assuring you, that as a son of teachers, I will ensure that we formulate a policy that will address all the lingering crises in the education sector.”

The state-owned tertiary institutions have been enmeshed in crises due to non-payment of salaries and other welfare packages.

The APC candidate stressed that education remains the greatest legacy any government could give his people.

The President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution, Comrade Akinbo Afolabi Olamide (Kempes), urged Abiodun to formulate a student-friendly educational policy when he emerged.

He said: “Our in-coming governor, we have been looking for this opportunity to interact with you and see what you have for us before we declare our support for you.

“The educational standard of this State has deteriorated and the school fees are becoming unbearable to the common man. I want to appeal to you, to address this menace as soon as you get into office, because I believe you are the next governor of Ogun State.

“We, students, always suffer alot when government refuses to give a listening ear to students”, said Akinbo.

Abiodun assured the residents of the host community (Ago-Iwoye) of speedy completion of the abandoned Ilishan-Ago-Iwoye road upon assumption of office as governor.

Also, the campaign team paid a royal visit to the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba Abdul Rasaq Adenugba.

However, while on the campaign tour of Ijebu East, Abiodun’s bid received another boost when the Owu people within the local government declared their support for his candidature.

He said: “Our in-coming governor, I want to gladly tell you that the people of Owu Ijebu Kingdom are solidly behind you. We would persuade and also influence all our kinsmen across the State to do same. This is because we have seen you as an experienced businessman who has been successful in his businesses and it won’t be difficult for you to take this state to greater heights.”

The monarch added: “We are assuring you of our maximum support with our resources to ensure you emerge victorious in this local government and the state at large. We are urging you to make sure you fulfill most of your electoral promises and give a new lease of life to the people of Ijebuland and Ogun State at large.

Abiodun, who was excited by the huge crowd, assured the people of good governance and fair distribution of government projects.

He said: “I want to sincerely appreciate you for this colorful reception. It is an indication that God is truly with us in this project. I also want to assure you, that your support will not be taking for granted and we will ensure that this is reciprocated through provisions of good governance that will enhance good lives for both urban and rural dwellers in the State.”

Abiodun said: “As the general elections are approaching, I want you to take cognizance of the fact that your PVC is your voting power. Don’t sell it.

“I am assuring you that APC is the party that can deliver the dividends of democracy. We have an array of capable and competent candidates into various elective offices and I want to admonish you to cast your votes for them. I want to assure you, that they will not disappoint you.

Gbenga Kaka, Director-General (DG) of the campaign organisation, Segun Adesegun, Remo North/Ikenne/Sagamu Federal Constituency candidate, Otunba (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga, former Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Afolabi Afuape, Ganiyu Hamzat, among others, while on a campaign tour round the ancient town, underscored the importance of the PVCs to electing credible and competent political office seekers and urged the leadership of the various Associations to persuade their members to use the cards to vote wisely.

Addressing members of the Processing Woods Marketers Associations of Nigeria (PWMAN) at the state secretariat, Express Junction, Sagamu, Abiodun told the leadership of the Association, led by Chief Samson Dosumu, that it is the APC that can provide the capable leadership at the Federal, governorship, National and State House of Assembly levels to the myriad of problems confronting the state.

He, however, warned the people to be wary of the antics of some politicians that have nothing in stock to offer them.

“Our administration is going to keep all electoral promises when we get into the office and I want you to count on me”.

While rounding off his campaign tour of the town at the Palace of Akarigbo, Sagamu, the APC governorship candidate appealed to the party faithfuls and supporters to cast their votes for the President Muhammadu Buhari/Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) joint ticket in the February 16 elections.

“The Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) is our son. He is from Ikenne-Remo and we should all support the joint ticket re-election of Buhari/Osinbajo and National Assembly candidates with our votes.

“When it is the turn of the governorship and State House of Assembly elections slated for March 2, cast your votes for me, Dapo Abiodun, your son, for the governorship seat and all the State House of Assembly candidates”, Abiodun appealed.”

A day earlier, the APC flag bearer visited Sotunbo, Ita-Sanni and Ogijo. He had a brief stop-over at Mosinmi, where he met with members Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) who pledged their support for his emergence as the next governor of the state and the re-election of Buhari/Osinbajo presidential joint ticket.

The Chairman of the Association, Alhaji Abiodun described the APC governorship candidate as a veteran and guru in the oil and gas sector and who knows where the shoes pinches and would demonstrate competence in governing the state.

The Ologijo of Ogijo, Oba Kazeem Olaonipekun, offered payers for Abiodun. He noted that, with the APC candidate emerging the next governor of the state he would put smiles on peoples’ faces, while things would take shapes as well.

Religion and ethnicity Abiodun promised to give equal treatment to all inhabitants, irrespective of religion and ethnicity.

He made the promise when he met with the Southwest leadership of Miyetti Allah, an umbrella body of cattle dealers at “Rounder”, along Aiyetoro/Imeko road, Abeokuta, Abeokuta North Local Government Area.

Abiodun, who had earlier addressed party faithful and supporters at Totoro, and market women and men at Lafenwa promised to live up to expectations.

  • Abiodun will succeed Amosun, says Osoba

Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Prince Dapo Abiodun is on a campaign tour of the three senatorial districts. At an interactive session with labour leaders in Abeokuta, the state capital, he spoke on the succession battle and his programmes for the Gateway State. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU reports.

Hope is on the horizon. That was the message that oozed out of the mouth of Prince Dapo Abiodun, governorship candidate of the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) to workers during an interactive session with labour leaders at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat, Abeokuta, the capital.

“My government will bring a relief to workers. I want to emphasise that our party is a progressive one and a progressive family will be anti-labour. We will not disappoint you,” he said.

In Ogun, civil servants, teachers and local government workers are politically conscious. They form a critical voting population which a candidate can only ignore to his peril. They are also crucial to the success of any administration.

The campaign train was actually led to the NLC office on Abiola Way, Abeokuta by the former governor, elder statesman Aremo Olusegun Osoba.

With Abiodun and Osoba were other party leaders and chieftains, including   Abiodun’s running mate, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Director-General (DG), Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation (DACO), Prince Segun Adesegun; Dr Femi Majekodunmi, Senator Gbenga Obadara, Senetor Adegbenga Kaka, Pa Mufutau Ajibola, Mr Samuel Aiyedogbon, Abiodun Akinlade, Mr Femi Allen, former Ogun Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Afolabi Shuaib, Alhaja Faida Akinjide, ex-Ogun Sports Commissioner Afolabi Afuape, House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Kunle Oluomo, Mr Samuel Durojaiye, Mrs Nike Osoba, Mr Femi Olori, and Mr Tunji Akinosi.

Abiodun promised to review the cases of the sacked NLC Chairman, Comrade Akeem Ambali, and 15 members. He also promised to reverse the suspension of 19 Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) officials by the state government two years ago.

The flag bearer promised to preside over an all-inclusive government. The theme of his campaign: ‘Building our future together, was thrilling to workers.   Urging the workers to vote for him, he said their efforts will not be in vain, if elected.

Abiodun said: “Let me highlight here, extracts from our manifesto that are specific to our commitment to improving the welfare of Ogun State workers. They are the  establishment of Ministry of Labour and Productivity to effectively engage workers and improve productivity and welfare; improvement of teachers’ welfare to put them at par with their private sector counterparts; restructuring of the contributory pension scheme and inauguration of State and Local Government Pension Boards; empowerment of and strengthening of the Local Governments so they can carry out their statutory functions; review and restoration of the roles and responsibilities of Public Service as implementation engine of government policies; and continuous capacity building and provision of conducive work environment and tools.”

The flag bearer said his government will also introduce performance-based incentives in public service, prioritize prompt payment of salaries, remittance of global deductions and gratuities for retirees, and develop affordable Labour Estates for workers in different parts of the state.

Abiodun acknowledged the growing cynicism and disbelief about promises made by candidates. He said: “This mistrust is not unexpected, given the experiences of Ogun State workers and the electorate in general over the years. However, in addition to personal values that underpin all my endeavours, I always keep at the back of my mind that if my teacher-parents had not been treated fairly and with dignity by government of their time, I may not be where it has pleased God to place me today, not to talk of vying for the governor of a state. Therefore, I regard my promises as sacred and solemn commitments that must be pursued with sincerity and vigour.”

The flag bearer promised to halt the delay in salary payment. He saod the arrears of salaries will be paid. He also said a government/labour committee will be set up for the periodic review and evaluation of implementation of agreed actions.

He added: “Ogun State is at a critical point in its 43 years of existence. It is time to go to the polls to elect a new governor and I’m hopeful that with the help of God and the overwhelming support of our people, I will have the opportunity to be the fifth democratically elected Governor.

“I will build on the strong foundation and successes of all my predecessors while learning from and avoiding their missteps. The support of Ogun State workers is very crucial in this journey not just because of your numbers, but because of your influence in the society and the credible voice you represent. Therefore, I request and trust I can count on your support and that of your affiliates, friends, associates and families in my quest to be the next Governor of Ogun State on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Osoba is optimistic that Abiodun will succeed Amosun on May 29. He said  APC will produce a governor that has listening ears.

He added:”We will set up a committee beyond the MOU that was signed today. The committee will comprise of those who have served in various capacities in the state government, look at the monthly internally generated revenue, how much are being owed and other things. We will have a fact – finding committee that will comprise both the government and the workers.

“So, we will engage you, labour unions, so that when Abiodun is sworn in on May 29, he would have the records and hit the ground running.

“Let me remind you, when I assumed office in 1999 as the executive governor of the state, our administration looked at the records we inherited and we engaged in series of discussions with the labour leaders. Through that, we were able to defray outstanding backlogs, though not at once, but in tranches.

“As we did between 1999 and 2003, we will cooperate with workers. We will replicate the same when Abiodun gets into office, beginning from May 29, 2019. I am sure that our party, APC, will win the forthcoming Presidential election. Our governor is of the APC and he should be able to talk to the President and get what is due to the state.

“I want to seize this opportunity to empathize with you on your pains and travails in almost eight years. Soon, a new dawn will set in. I am assuring you, that Dapo Abiodun will neither disappoint nor offend you.”

Osoba said too many political appointees is a waste of money and promised that the APC will not repeat the mistake.

“I am here to testify as the father of Mr Governor and to be his guarantor”, he added.

The NLC Chairman, Comrade Akeem Ambali, described Abiodun as a topmost contender in the governorship contest.

He assured that very soon, there will be a total change that will beckon a new dawn. The governorship election, Ambali said, is a payback time for a new song to be sung in the state.

He added: “The APC government in the state laid us off from active service, our contributory pensions are being withheld, and our promotions are being delayed. These forthcoming general elections are our payback time. We could not imagine that someone could just woke up from sleep and say he has sacked the state workers. March 2 governorship election beckons to sing a new song. “After darkness comes sunshine”.

“Shortly after our sack, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), elders with grey hairs, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, begged those in authorities to reinstate us, but they rebuffed every entreaty.

“We want dialogue with the government from time to time and they should tell us the true position of things.

“In Ogun State, all we need is ring road in Abeokuta, the state capital, to link other parts of the metropolis.

Also, emphasis should be on rural development to stem urban congestion, crimes and others.

“What are the sins of Agbara people in Ogun West district?

Our budget in Ogun State is sophisticated to stimulate economic development and employment generation. What is the government doing about employment generation through Olokola refinery project? Why are our council chairmen and councilors being impoverished through the cut of their salaries and other benefits which is unlike during the immediate past administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel? What is wrong with sports and tourism sectors?

“The next government in the state should strengthen local government administration so that council chairmen can embark on capital projects.

We want payments of of our cooperative deductions, gratuities and pensions.”

Abiodun later visited Ewekoro Council in Ogun West District. He paid homage to the Onitori of Itori. The monarch, Oba AbdulFatai Akorede Akamo, Olu of Itori, admonished other traditional rulers in the local council to ensure their subjects cast their votes for no other political party than All Progressives Congress (APC).

The monarch who said Amosun has done his best, added that Ogun State needs a governor that will perform beyond peoples’ expectations.

The traditional ruler commended President Muhammad Buhari for all what he has done in Nigeria and Ewekoro local government in particular.

“People call him “Baba go-slow” and he gave them us railway and cargo airport in Ewekoro local government! We want him to remain “go-slow” because he is nice to us Ogun state. Slow and steady wins the race!”

In his response, Abiodun assured the people of Itori and Oluke-Orile, both in Ewekoro local government, that Dangote Cement factory will return to the area and commence work.

He said his administration would make life better for the citizens, by giving them dividends of democracy across all the nooks and crannies of the state.

Also, when he took his campaign train to Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area (LGA) and Yemoji Local Council Development Area (LCDA), on Monday,  January 21, 2019, Abiodun admonished party faithfuls and supporters to be wary of the antics of politicians who are using the good name of the party to deceive them for their selfish ambition, just as the forthcoming general elections are approaching.

He said though some selfish political office seekers may have used the good name of APC to get into positions of authority and performed below expectations, he urged that that should not be used as a yardstick to measure all politicians.

While addressing APC members and supporters at Isiwo, in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, on Monday, as parts of his ward-to-ward campaign tour of all the 20 local governments, the APC governorship candidate promised that a new dawn is beckoning on all sons and daughters of the state, if he emerged as the next governor.

According to him, “don’t be deceived by some politicians that have gone out on the prowl, knocking at your doors to bring out your Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to take the numbers on them and then, offer you money.

“And we can’t be in the same party and we will be making the same mistakes. No! It is not possible. These sets of politicians are not real. APC is the party. Broom is the symbol of our party. In all the elections, make sure you cast your votes for the APC.

“Buhari isn’t in another party but in APC. His Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is our son and we should use our votes to promote him so that he  (Osinbajo) can know that his kinsmen are solidly behind him.

“I want to use this occasion to reiterate my commitment to ensuring that I bring my vast experience in the private sector to bear in governance if I emerge as the governor of the state”, Abiodun promised.

Responding to the requests of Oba Sikiru Salisu, and Council of Baales, Abiodun promised to help them in rehabilitating the 15 kilometre road stretching from Ijebu-Ode through Yemoji/Odo-Ladenusi/Oko-Ako/Odo-Lofa and to Isiwo; the construction of a culvert linking the various communities; renovation of both public primary and secondary schools; energizing the transformers; provision of pipe-borne water; among others.

Earlier, former APC Ogun East Senatorial district chairman, Alhaji Folorusho Elias, had expressed appreciation for the visit of Abiodun as part of his campaign tour, saying it would afford him an on-the-spot assessment of the deplorable road conditions and other amenities that are begging for attention for the benefit of the inhabitants of the communities.

He said the monarch, his subjects and the entire inhabitants have decided to speak with one voice and cast their votes for the candidature of Dapo Abiodun and the APC as a party.

“When you get into office help us reconstruct our road from Yemoji through Agboju. Also, help us reconstruct the only culvert linking our various communities. Our unemployed youths are there and we want your government to empower them. We have untapped large expanse of land, should you need them to set up businesses for our youths”, said the octogenarian.

Party stalwarts at the meeting included the Director-General (DG), Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation (DACO), Prince Segun Adesegun, Sen Gbenga Obadara, former Ogun SUBEB Chairman, Mr Mufutau Ajibola, Chief Bode Mustapha, former Ogun Sports Commissioner, Mr Afolabi Afuape, Hon Ganiyu Hamzat, Ijebu-Ode House of Assembly candidate, Aare Kemi Oduwole, Pa Olu Agemo, among others.

At Ikoti, in Yemoji LCDA, the APC governorship candidate promised to ensure that the Olokoola free trade zone becomes a reality if and when he gets into office.

He said his administration will be business friendly through the provision of an enabling environment where the people of the state can take its economic advantage.

According to Abiodun, the Olokoola deap sea port will be given priority in order to cater for the unemployed youths.

He said the Olokoola free trade zone happens to be the deepest seaport but unfortunately that opportunity has not been exploited .

“The economic importance of this project is our priority and when I become governor, I will bring investors to partner with Ogun state government. And that will have multiplier effects on the state economy. I will make it easy for investors to come and invest in Ogun state- both local and international investors.  I know how to do it, because I come from the private sector.”

Owu-Ijebu community, in Ijebu East Local Government Area, is not left alone.

Abiodun’s ambition received a significant boost as the Owu people, in their hundreds, declared their support for his candidature.

During a rousing reception organised for him, spokesperson of the community, the Atunluse of Owu Ijebu Kingdom, Otunba Femi Adewunmi, noted that the entire members of the community were throwing their weight behind the Abiodun in view of his vast experience in the private sector which is a clear testimony that he is capable of bringing his experience to bear at taking the economy of the state to a greater heights if he emerged as the governor.

He said:”Our in-coming governor, I want to gladly tell you that the people of Owu-Ijebu Kingdom are solidly behind you and we would influence all our other kinsmen across the State to do same. This is because we have seen you as an experienced business man who has been successful in his businesses and it won’t be difficult for you to take this State to greater heights’.

He added: “we are assuring you of our maximum support with our resources to ensure you emerge victorious with our votes in this local government, and the state at large. We are urging you to make sure you fulfill most of your electoral promises and give a new lease of life to the people of Ijebuland and Ogun State at large”.

The APC candidate assured them of good governance and even distribution of government projects across the board in the state when he becomes governor.

He said: “I want to sincerely appreciate you for this colorful reception and it is an indication that God is truly with us on this project. I also want to assure you that your support will not be taking for granted and we will ensure that this is reciprocated through provisions of good governance that will enhance good lives for, both dwellers in the urban and rural areas of the State.

Earlier, the campaign train which moved round the local government from Ijebu-Imushin to J4 to Ebute Odo to Ogbere and Itele before the grand finale at Ijebu Ife.

The people of the local government area were enthusiastic and show their readiness to support the candidate.

However, the support became obvious at Itele-Ijebu where market women and men, and artisans of the local government promised to throw their weight behind the APC governorship candidate.

Also during the week, it was a matter of who the cap fits. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), an illustrious son of Remoland, took no one by surprise as he led the campaign tour of Abiodun to all the three local governments that make up Remoland. Shortly after paying homage to Remo traditional rulers in 33 communities led by the Akarigbo and Paramount ruler of the Kingdom,  Oba Babatunde Ajayi, the VP who campaigned for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-electionn, also seized the occasion to campaign for Abiodun as the Ogun State APC governorship candidate in Sagamu, Ikenne, Ilishan, Isara, Iperu, Ode-Remo, Ogere and other adjourning communities.

Spokesperson, Remoland sons and daughters, Otunba Adeleke Adeshina, adduced reasons for the town hall meeting. He said it was organised as a rallying point to drum up support for the joint ticket re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari/Yemi Osinbajo and the election of Dapo Abiodun as Ogun State governor.

“Three local governments that make up Remoland under the leadership of the Akarigbo and Paramount ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, 33 towns being represented by their respective Obas, professionals and all business communities have put this town hall meeting together for the cause of our son, Vice – President Yemi Osinbajo.

“Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is our son and he is from Ikenne, here in Remoland.

“So, we are here to drum up our support for President Muhammadu Buhari cause and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo”, said Adeleke. By the grace of God, on February 17, we will all sing songs of celebration after their reelection” he conculded .

  • ETTU Cup: Quadri, Abiodun lift Sporting to victory

Despite dropping out from the ETTU Champions League, Nigeria’s duo of Bode Abiodun and Aruna Quadri showed top class after the Nigerians facilitated Sporting’s 3-1 quarterfinal first leg away win over Spain’s Cajasur Priego in the ETTU Cup.

As the third-placed team in the group stage of the ETTU Champions League, Sporting automatically qualified for the quarterfinal round of the ETTU Cup and were drawn against star-studded Spanish champion – Cajasur Priego.

In the first leg tie played in Spain, Sporting, Portuguese Champion had Abiodun, Quadri and Diogo Carvalho in their fold, while the home team has Spanish international – Carlos Machado as well as China’s Qiyao Han and Portuguese star – Andre Silva.

Despite playing away in front of the noisy Spanish fans, Abiodun and Quadri became the stars of the night with their display which silenced the home fans in the encounter.

It was Abiodun who started the campaign for Sporting when he beat Machado (3-2) 7-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9 to set the stage for the visitors.

When it was the turn of the Quadri against the Chinese star – Han, it looked as if the African champion was going to be on the losing side but he turned the tide on his opponent despite being down 2-1 to win 3-2 (13-11, 8-11, 10-12, 11-2, 11-7) to give Sporting a 2-0 lead.

In the third game involving Portuguese internationals – Silva and Carvalho, it was Silva who laughed last when he whipped his compatriot 3-0 (14-12, 11-8, 11-9) to put the encounter at 1-2.

To be certain of their away victory, Quadri was returned to the table to square up against the Spanish international and as the inspirational player for Sporting, the Nigerian did not disappoint with a 3-1 (11-3, 5-11, 11-7, 11-6) win to complete the 3-1 rout of the home team.

A satisfied Quadri told NationSport yesterday that the result of the encounter was not a true reflection of what transpired during the match.

  • Rural roads to get more attention if elected governor – Abiodun

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, yesterday expressed his readiness to give more attention to rural development by connecting rural communities to urban centres with new link roads, if elected governor.

Abiodun said fixing of rural roads in the three senatorial districts and linking them with urban settings would ease the movement of farm produce and people from one location to another.

The governorship hopeful, who made this known while speaking at the palace of the Alaye of Ode-Remo in Remo North Local Government Area, added that rural roads connecting Ogun State with neighbouring states would also be given priority attention.

The successful entrepreneur and real estate player noted that though it is important to have flyovers in Abeokuta, but said the need for rural roads should not be sacrificed just because of the state capital.

According to him, public pipe-borne water which had disappeared in the state in the last seven and half years would return, even in rural areas, for the benefits of citizens and residents of the state.

He declared that the forthcoming governorship election is for the greater growth and development of the state and urged the people to cast their vote en-masse for him and the APC.

Abiodun said: “It is also evident that many communities in the state are without pipe-borne water and regular power supply. We will look into these challenges and attend to them.

“It is common knowledge that, while some governors, having spent eight years in office, have got nothing to show as electoral promises. But I want to assure you that ours will be different. We will make good our electoral promises.

“We are not leaving APC for another party because we know it is a great party that can bring dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

“We are going to return power to the local governments so that council chairmen can perform their statutory duties effectively. Also, we will build multi-healthcare centres in each local government area.

“Those using the portraits of President Muhammadu Buhari as their presidential candidate are not being honest to themselves because they do not belong to our party, APC.”

  • Vote for me, Buhari to ensure good governance in Ogun, says Abiodun

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State,  Prince Dapo Abiodun, yesterday urged residents to vote for him and re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari, to ensure good governance.

He said a vote for APC at the state and national levels  would enhance the presence of Federal Government projects.

Abiodun said an APC governor and president would enhance even spread of development across the state.

The  governorship candidate spoke at the palace of the monarch of Isheri-Olofin Oba Nurudeen Adebowale, in Ifo Local Government during his ward-to-ward campaign tour of Ifo 2 State Constituency.

Abiodun, who was accompanied by his running mate, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Sen. Gbenga Obadara, Abiodun Akinlade, Director-General (DG), Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation, Chief Segun Adesegun,  Ganiyu Hamzat, among  others, said the people cannot afford to lose the governorship seat to another party.

He enjoined them to vote for him and re-elect President Buhari, to attract Federal Government projects to the state.

Abiodun said: “APC is our party. I am the Ogun State governorship candidate of the APC. The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, is our son and he is from Ogun State, while President Muhammadu Buhari is our presidential candidate.

“I am urging you to cast your votes for all the APC candidates.

Kabiyesi, I want you to help us spread the good news about our party to all your subjects so that they can vote for us in the coming general election.

“On the problems facing you in the community, I want to assure you that we have not only come here to seek  your prayers, but also to afford us the opportunity to know the problems you are facing here. We will go round and see what the problems are.

“We are ready to make amends.

“There is a problem of bad roads in your community. We are going to rehabilitate them when we get into office. We won’t forget that we have made promises.

“We can’t have a community as big as this, with a large population, yet, you don’t have a public secondary school and a public health care centre.”

Oba  Adebowale had decried the deplorable roads linking the community with other parts  of state, insecurity, absence of a public hospital and a public secondary school.

He advised Abiodun to address them if elected.

Oba Adebowale noted that Isheri-Olofin was the cradle of Awori people and the first stool in Aworiland, whether in Lagos or Ogun state, lamenting the ill treatments meted out to the sons and daughters of the community.

He said it was sad that nobody from the community was in the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration.

The monarch appealed to Abiodun to look into that area and address the anomaly, if he emerged as the next governor.

  • Ogun APC candidate, Abiodun, receives another royal support

Less than one week after he was endorsed as right successor to Governor Ibikunle Amosun by the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, another prominent monarch in Ogun State, the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Obalanlege, has blessed the governorship candidate of the All Progressives’ Congress(APC) in the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun,  assuring him of massive support from the Ota people in the next elections.

Oba Obalanlege who gave the assurance when he hosted Prince Abiodun in his palace, to round off his ward – to – ward campaign tour of Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of the state, urged the Abiodun to address the sundry challenges facing the state if he eventually becomes the governor.

The monarch also lauded Abiodun for choosing his running mate from Ado-Odo Ota, urging other royal fathers present to pray for the victory of the APC candidate at the poll.

He said: “I want to appreciate our incoming governor for his visit and we pray God Almighty will grant his heart desire. We also use this medium to appeal to him to address the major challenges facing us as discussed with you when you become the governor.”

Responding, Abiodun said:  “Kaabiyesi, all what you have told me as challenges facing this area, I want to urge you to kindly itemize them and let’s make it a memorandum so that when I become the governor, we can be marking them as we deliver.

“I am a man of my words and would deliver as promised. I have gone round the town and I have seen the major challenges of our people which is infrastructural decay and I want to assure you that it will be prioritized and your daughter, who is my deputy and a civil engineer, will oversee and ensure that we deliver on all promises on roads.”

Earlier in Ado town in Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area,  Abiodun assured residents that if elected governor and sworn – in, he would not make his deputy

  • Abiodun, Akinlade and battle for Oke Mosan Govt House

There is a split in the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC). The supporters of Governor Ibikunle Amosun are sponsoring Adekunle Akinlade for governor on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) against the party’s candidate, Dapo Abiodun. What does this division portend for the ruling party? Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU writes on the succession battle.

The war of attrition is taking its toll on the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC). The ruling party is decimated by the defection of key chieftains to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), where House of Representatives member Adekunle Akinlade has gone to take refuge. Analysts predict a tough battle on poll day.

Akinlade, who hails from Yewa Division and Dapo Abiodun, governorship flag bearer of the APC, were aspirants at the primary. Ahead of the shadow poll, the party was polarised. A section of the party queued behind Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who had anointed Akinlade as successor. Other leaders, including former Governor Olusegun Osoba, were rooting for Abiodun.

In the view of the governor, power should shift to Yewa, Ogun West Senatorial District, which has not produced a governor since the state was created. Power shift, he explained, was meant to give the marginalised district a sense of belonging and foster equity and justice.

But, other leaders believe that the governor is trying to create confusion because of his selfish succession agenda. In their opinion, the subsisting convention favours power rotation between Ijebu/Remo and Egba/Egbado axis.

Two parallel shadow polls produced Akinlade and Abiodun. The chapter was enveloped in a post-primary crisis as the two chieftains were laying claim to the ticket. The intervention of the APC national leadership aggravated the imbroglio. Akinlade’s euphoria of victory was short lived as the national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, rejected the primary that threw up Akinlade, saying that it was held in error.

Oshiomhole said Amosun presided over a curious festival of imposition. He said apart from trying to force Akinlade on the party, he also imposed other parliamentary candidates on the platform. The chairman said the imposition will not stand. The governor stood his ground. He said Akinlade enjoyed acceptance and popularity in the party, unlike Abiodun, who he alleged was imposed by external forces.

However, when the reality dawned on Amosun that the ticket had eluded Akinlade, his camp adopted APM as a platform. Up came Akinlade as the APM candidate – to the surprise of party chieftains. The confusion is underscored by the fact that his main backer, Amosun, is an APC senatorial candidate for Ogun Central District. Instead of pulling their resources together, the two APC camps are working at cross purpose.

The mainstream APC, led by Osoba, is rooting for President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term bid. Amosun and his followers are also aggressively campaigning for the president.

Two weeks ago, Amosun took the APM national chairman to Aso Villa to endorse President Buhari. The president welcomed the idea, although his media aide reiterated that he will campaign for Abiodun.

Few days later, Osoba also took Abiodun to the president. The Commander-In-Chief assured the businessman-turned politician of support.

Last week, Amosun visited the Aso Villa again to introduce Akinlade to President Buhari. He raised no objection. While the president is likely to visit Abeokuta, the capital, to campaign for Abiodun, he is also not opposed to Akinlade, whose party has endorsed him for a second term. To the president, the scenario is understandable. The implication is that Oshiomhole’s threat of sanction for anti-party activities pales into an empty threat. Although the national chairman has now dissolved the Ogun State Executive Committee of the party, the move has never slowed down the governor’s camp in its avowed commitment to install Akinlade as his successor.

Akinlade’s campaign manager, Safaradeen Ishola, justified the governor’s position on succession. He said the rotational arrangement has been violated by the APC, pointing out that it has left Yewa stranded. He said Amosun supported power shift to Ogun West in the spirit of fairness and justice because the district has not produced governor since the state was created in 1976.

There are some APC chieftains who believe that Amosun should produce his successor because he was the symbol of the battle for the soul of Ogun when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wielded political control. To them, Amosun’s performance, his infrastructure battles and people-oriented policies and programmes have popularised the APC in the Gateway State.

Ahead of the primary, the governor also went round the state to feel the pulse of the people. Following the consultations, his supporters said reason and logic compelled him to insist on power shift to Yewa, and Akinlade from Ipokia is only fortunate to be a beneficiary.

Ishola said the defections to APM underscored the people’s protest against injustice, adding that the APM has been waxing stronger because people are determined to make a point. He said in barely two months, the APM has become a movement to reckon with in the state.

Now, there are four formidable parties in Ogun-APC, PDP, APM and Gboyega Isiaka’s African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Can APC win without APM? Can APM win without APC? Will the division not reduce the chances of the two camp during the governorship election? Time will tell.
