Abiodun tasks kingmakers on level playing ground for Awujale contestants

Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun has charged the Awujale Chiefs –  in – Council in Ijebu Ode to ensure a level playing ground in the process of appointing a new Awujale of Ijebuland.

The stool of the Awujale became vacant when Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025, at 91 after reigning for over 65 years.

Speaking after a meeting with members of the Awujale Chiefs – in – Council at Iperu, Abiodun said it was imperative for the people of Ijebuland to have a new Awujale as soon as possible, as “nature abhors a vacuum.”

The Governor assured the people of Ijebuland that his administration would support any candidate presented by the kingmakers at the end of the nomination process.

“Nature abhors a vacuum, and the process of installing another Awujale has started. That was also what we discussed.

“The pathway to having in place a regency is the pathway to ensuring that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, and to ensure that all the processes which are enshrined in the Laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed.

“I must say that all of us agreed that we are on the same page, and I think this will put paid to all the rumours that have been agog about one thing or another,” he said.

Abiodun also expressed the hope that the process would be rancour-free asking those lining up for the exalted position to be given equal opportunity.

He described members of the Awujale Council as respectable personalities who contributed to the successful reign of the late Awujale by maintaining peace in the land.

“I had to first of all wait for the 40 days to come and go before calling this meeting because all of us have been in mourning. I think what is most important is the fact that they are all deeply committed and dedicated chiefs of the Awujale, and I appreciate them.

“This is my first meeting with them to commiserate with them on the passing of our revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, and also to assure them that despite the rumours that have been ongoing, I have absolute confidence in them.

“The Council is intact, with no disharmony among them. There is no pluralization; they are all working hand in glove with each other, and I am happy with today’s meeting, and I thank them,” the Governor added.

The Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, stressed the resolve of the Council to continue its peace-building duties.

He assured that members would continue to unite and work as a team for the peace and progress of Ijebuland.

    • Police, DSS arrest PDP agent with N30m cash in Kaduna
    • INEC officials, others nabbed in Ogun
    • ADC agents caught with ballot paper booklets in Anambra
    • APC wins in Kogi, PDP in Oyo

It was all pumping of hands and back slapping yesterday in the camps of Governors Monday Okpebholo (Edo State), Charles Soludo (Anambra), Uba Sani (Kaduna), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo) as early results of the by-elections in parts of the country went hugely in favour of the candidates they had spent much time campaigning for in the last few months.

On the contrary, the candidates of ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El Rufai and those of Labour Party Presidential candidate in 2023, Mr.Peter Obi, had an outing to forget.

The elections were generally peaceful although there were reports of violence in Nnewi, Anambra State and Shanono, Bagwai and Ghari in Kano State.

The Kano State Police Command confirmed that it arrested 288 suspected thugs during the exercise.

Found in possession of the suspects were bows and arrows, daggers, cutlasses and charms.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called for the cancellation of the Kano election in view of the violence blamed on supporters of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Several party functionaries and a few officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were arrested in Kaduna and Ogun states for being in possession of huge sums of money allegedly earmarked for compromising the electoral process.

Early returns from the polling booths showed that landslide victories awaited the APC  senatorial candidate in Edo Central Joseph Ikpea and the party’s flag bearer in Ovia North East/Ovia South West Federal Constituency of the state, Omosede Igbinedion.

Omosede is the daughter of the Esama of Benin Kigdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion.

The 90-year-old Chief Igbinedion defied a downpour to vote at Polling Unit 7 in Okada.

Omosede polled 450 votes while the PDP and ADC got one vote each at the end of voting there.

She had contested for the same seat in 2023 on the platform of PDP but lost to APC’s Dennis Idahosa who vacated the seat following his election as Deputy Governor last September.

Her PDP opponent yesterday, Mr. Johnny Aikpitanyi, stormed Benin City to complain about alleged intimidation of voters.

He claimed that over 150 thugs and vigilance group members were deployed to intimidate voters at Oghede polling unit in Ovia North East.

Governor Okpebholo voted at Ward 2, Unit 1, Udomi Primary School in Esan Central Local Government Area but expressed frustration at the slow pace of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) used at the polling booth.

“Well, I just voted. You can see the frustration. The BVAS is just too slow. It takes too long before you can get accredited.

“I think INEC needs to look into this. So far, so good, the feelers I’m getting are good,” he told reporters.

He was until his election as governor the senator from the district.

Abiodun confirms supremacy over Adebutu in Remo

Governor Abiodun notched up one more victory over his close rival, PDP’s Ladi Adebutu, with the massive votes for the APC House of Representatives candidate for Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North, Adesola Elegbeji.

The APC had run away with a narrow victory against the PDP in the 2023 election in the constituency.

When a vacancy occurred last year following the death of Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, the PDP thought it was time to revenge only for the voters to decide otherwise.

Mr Bolarinwa Oluwole, PDP candidate in the by-election accused the APC of deploying thugs to chase voters away from polling units in the constituency.

He said the thugs targeted strongholds of the PDP to cause violence. He claimed there was no by-election in Ogun.

It was double embarrassment for the PDP in the state as the party was linked with an attempt to bribe its way to victory in the election.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the arrest of two individuals identified as INEC officials and others for alleged electoral offences in Iperu Remo, Ogun State, during the by-election.

The police spokesperson in the state, CSP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the arrest through a statement, said the suspects were arrested at about 0045hrs by a police patrol team attached to the Iperu Remo Division.

CSP Odutola said that a Mitsubishi Spacewagon vehicle marked Lagos AKD 887 HT with three occupants – Mr. Toryem Joe-Stans and Ms. Mandara Aminat, both officials of the INEC, were intercepted in Iperu alongside the driver.

She explained that while the police patrol team was searching the vehicle, it discovered and recovered cash sum of two million five hundred thousand naira (₦2,500,000.00) from Joe-Stans Toryem.

The police spokesperson added that during interrogation, he confessed that the money was collected at Kehoy Hotel, Iperu, Ogun State from a man he referred to as “Political Solution.”

According to Odutola, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, had directed the transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran.

Soludo, former Anambra Speaker decry violence in Nnewi

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo and the immediate past Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Rita Maduagwu, deplored the violence that almost marred the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election.

Leading contestants for the seat left vacant by the death of APC’s Ifeanyi Ubah were Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Azuka Okwusa of APC, Donald Amamgbo of Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) and Christian Ubah of PDP.

But it was the APGA candidate that seemed to have got the majority of the votes.

Of note is the poor showing of ADC’s Amamgbo for whom Mr. Peter Obi had campaigned vigorously.

Obi, a former governor of the Anambra State, got 584,621 votes in the state alone during the 2023 presidential election.

Soludo told reporters shortly after casting his vote at his polling unit 002, Ofiyi Square, Isuofia ward in Aguata Local Government Area that the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu was assaulted by an opposition party during the by-election in the state.

“Just in the last few minutes, I got a terrible report from Nnewi South. The news is not palatable but predictable, because when you see you are losing, you begin to unleash violence to disrupt the electoral process,” he said.

“My Commissioner was in pains and crying that the APC governorship candidate in Anambra took truckload of police and thugs and was going from one polling unit to another beating up people, including the commissioner.

“That is shocking but not unexpected. That is what you do when you are desperate. I understand they are losing even in his ward.

“Let the people vote and let their votes count. That is what we are asking. But we are confident that at the end of the day, the people’s will must prevail,” he added.

A similar complaint of intimidation came from the APC.

It said its members and agents were being arrested by agents of the state government

Four polling agents of the APC were allegedly taken away by a local government chairman, provoking a protest by youths in the area.

Hon Rita Maduagwu, told The Nation that APGA supporters invaded her Ukpor Ward 3,009 to unleash mayhem on the voters

“Ukpor in Nnewi South had never witnessed such violence during election,” she said.

APC agents in Ward 4, Units 001 and 003 and Ward 4 Unit 8 in Ekwusigo were also allegedly arrested.

A video recording emerged on social media yesterday purporting to show two booklets of ballot papers already thumb-printed in favour of ADC.

The booklets were allegedly intended to be smuggled into ballot boxes at Aguata High School, Ekwolobi.

Uba Sani makes it happen for APC in Chikun, Zaria

The APC candidate in the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, Joseph Bagudu, and that of Zaria/Kewaye State Constituency, Mohammed Haruna, also appeared to be cruising to victory at the close of voting.

Reports from the various polling centres showed that their votes overshadowed those of Adanu Alexander of ADC and Dawaki Esther of PDP for Chikun/Kajuru as well as Isiyaku Kabir of ADC and Mamuda Abdullahi of PDP for Zaria/Kewaye.

Mallam El Rufai had rolled out his political machinery ahead of the by-election, crisscrossing the various wards to canvass support for the ADC candidates.

But all that seemed to have counted for nothing as shown by the results from the fields.

The Chikun/Kajuru seat was left vacant by the death of LP’s Abubakar Adamu.

The Police Command in Kaduna State said its operatives in collaboration with those of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies arrested a suspected vote buyer ahead of the by-elections and recovered N30 million cash.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, said the suspect was arrested at a popular Hotel located on Turunku Road in the Kaduna metropolis.

According to Hassan, the seized cash was earmarked for the purpose of inducing voters to compromise the electoral process.

According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had planned to use the said amount to bribe eligible voters.

Hassan added: “On interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and pleaded for leniency.”

The Kaduna State chapter of the PDP confirmed ownership of the money but denied it was meant to compromise INEC officials or induce voters.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, the State Chairman of the party, Sir Edward Percy Masha, described the allegation of vote buying as “false, malicious and politically motivated.,” maintaining that the seized funds were intended to facilitate the work of PDP agents and officials during the by-elections across the state.

According to him, every political party mobilises agents, supervisors and collation officers during elections and such structures require funding.

He noted that with over 5,000 PDP agents deployed across the constituencies, the seized N30 million amounted to little more than stipends for their welfare.

Masha said: “Let me make it clear: that money was for election logistics. We have 169 wards, and if you multiply the number of agents, supervisors and collation officers by their allowances, you will arrive at well over N30 million.

“That is the reality. To now turn around and say it was for vote buying is mischievous and an insult to the intelligence of Nigerians.”

Masha lamented that the party has been the target of harassment by security agencies working, in his words, “at the behest of the Kaduna State Government.”

He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of weaponising state institutions to intimidate the opposition.

He recalled that only a day earlier, security operatives raided the campaign council office of the PDP candidate for Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Princess Esther Ashivelli Dawaki, and whisked away several party officials, including the state publicity secretary, zonal chairman, youth leader, women leaders, and more than 18 others.

Makinde proves too strong for APC in Ibadan North

There seems to be nothing to stop the PDP candidate in the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, Folajinmi Oyekunle, after securing massive votes across the constituency.

APC candidate, Olatunji Adewale was no match, winning only six votes at his Ward 10, Unit 27 polling unit as against the nine for Oyekunle.

288 armed thugs arrested in Shanono/Bagwai; APC,PDPcall for cancellation of election

The police in Kano State arrested 288 suspected thugs said to have engaged in disruptive activities during the by-election in Ghari/Tsanyawa and Bagwai/Shanono state constituencies.

Police spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said various weapons were recovered from the suspects, including a pump action rifle and four locally made guns.

Other dangerous weapons recovered included bows and arrows, catapults and pebbles, cutlasses, knives and clubs.

“The suspects are currently in police custody. Investigations are ongoing to identify their sponsors and collaborators.”

The APC and PDP called for immediate cancelation of the by-election for Shanono/Bagwai constituency, and the Ghari constituency rerun election, citing alleged widespread extreme violence and election disruption by armed thugs across several polling units.

APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said in a statement that “verifiable reports from Shanono and Bagwai Local Government Areas and Ghari constituency have voters fleeing polling areas, with deployed security personnel overwhelmed by the violence, making the prospects of a credible election impossible.

“Proceeding with the Shanono/Bagwai Kano State Constituency by-election and Ghari rerun election in the atmosphere of utter brigandage and outright violent voter intimidation will be against democratic dictates of free, fair and peaceful election, and set a dangerous precedent for undesirable and unacceptable electoral heist,” Morka said.

Kano State Chairman of the PDP, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, said his party was alarmed by reports of intimidation, thuggery and other actions that undermine the democratic process.

He said: “The use of violence or threat of violence to influence voters and candidates and the outcome of the election are unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

“Such conducts not only endangers lives but destroys public trust in our democratic institutions.

“Let it be known that a free and fair election is the foundation of representative democracy.

“We urge all authorities to act decisively to safeguard that principle and to ensure the will of the people is reflected without fear or favor.”

    APC’s Yakubu wins in Kogi

The  APC candidate in the Egume/ Dekina State Constituency election in Kog State, Musa Hassan Yakubu, was returned with a total of 55, 073 votes.

Godwin Meliga of PDP came a distant second with 1038 votes, according to the results declared by the returning officer, Prof. Emmanuel Onoja Eneche.

In the third place was Egene Joseph Ugbede of APM who got 445 votes while Amos Ahaiba of ADC scored 141 votes. Rilwan Mudi of SDP had five votes and Yakubu Ugbede of A party polled 16 votes.

Court restrains Abiodun, others from demolishing Daniel’s properties

A state high court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted an ex parte interim order stopping any planned demolition or tampering with the property of former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and his wife, Yeye Olufunke Daniel

The ex parte order, which was obtained by Daniel and Yeye Olufunke Daniel as applicants, was granted by Justice O.S. Oloyede in a suit marked HCS/371/2025 against the quartet of the Governor of Ogun State (Prince Dapo Abiodun), Attorney General of Ogun State, Ogun State Planning & Development Permit Authority and Ogun State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Development, who were designated as defendants/respondents.

The order comes on the heels of the “Quit notice and threats to demolish” which were served on the applicants on August 8 by the respondents. The Notices were pasted on the Sagamu property of the applicants.

A Certified True Copy (CTC) of the order dated August 12, 2025 and signed by W.T. Ogundele, Principal Registrar, restrained the respondents, their agents or proxies from “demolishing or in any way or manner tampering with the property” of the applicants known as Aseludero Court located along Awolowo Avenue, Sagamu GRA, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

  • Abiodun, Daniel in fresh face off over threat to demolish ex-gov’s property

Abiodun, Daniel in fresh face off over threat to demolish ex-gov’s property

Former Ogun State governor,  Gbenga Daniel has accused the governor Dapo Abiodun – led government of  marking  his Asoludero Court, a  private residence built in 2004 in Sagamu for demolition for  contravening building regulations.

Daniel, who is a serving Senator representing Ogun East in the 10th National Assembly, also named  Conference Hotel Sagamu which was built in 2013, and the annex erected in 2015 as his other properties penciled for demolition.

The said structures located in Government Reservation Area (GRA) Sagamu, according to the notices, were constructed without permit and adequate setback among other contraventions.

The Nation reports that days after Senator Ibikunle Amosun came to power in 2011, his administration also threatened to bring those structures down for alleged contravention.

In a statement yesterday  by  Steve Oliyide of the Otunba Gbenga Daniel Media Office, the former governor described the latest step by the state government as “political persecution” on the watch of governor Abiodun.

He revealed that at about 4.pm on Friday, some people claiming to be agents of the government of Ogun State posted “Notices of Contravention, Quit and threats of demolition” on his residential and commercial properties in Sagamu.

Read Also: Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid unstoppable- Adekanmbi

Noting that the action is not an isolated incident, he said the latest act of persecution followed a similar pattern of illegal demolitions allegedly carried out by Abiodun’s administration, citing demolition of DATKEM Plaza Ijebu Ode, a property belonging to his wife, Yeye Olufunke Daniel in the midnight of September, 2023 by thugs believed to be working on the orders of the governor.

He stated, “We strongly condemn this latest act of political persecution by Governor Dapo Abiodun, as evidenced by the recent issuance of these Notices which were dated August 8, 2025, as a clear demonstration of the governor’s malicious and vindictive abuse of power, hiding behind a newly-enacted law retroactively to target a political opponent.

“The documents, concerning these properties cite “suspected” offenses related to construction without adequate permits (which is laughable). This is a ludicrous and flimsy excuse, as the properties in question have been in existence for many years. For instance, the Asoludero Court was built in 2004, while the Conference Hotel Sagamu was built in 2013, and the Annex since 2015. The governor’s administration is now attempting to use the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 to demolish buildings that were legally constructed long before the law was even in existence.

“This action is not only politically motivated but also a blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law. The Notices in themselves are clear breaches of procedures which allows adequate time intervals between Notifications on contraventions, Quits and the penalties, if indeed there was any, is not a demolition or a threat of it. Governor Abiodun’s administration has completely bypassed this procedure, issuing a “Notice of Contravention” and a “Notice to Quit” simultaneously, with an immediate threat of demolition. This is not a legal process; it is a thuggish tactic designed to intimidate and inflict damage.

“It is worth noting that this is not an isolated incident. This latest act of persecution follows a similar pattern of illegal demolitions carried out by Governor Abiodun’s administration. We recall with disgust the illegal demolition of DATKEM Plaza Ijebu Ode, a property belonging to the wife of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Yeye Olufunke Daniel in the midnight of September, 2023 by thugs believed to be working on the orders of the Governor as no government agent will be sent on such assignment at ungodly hours of the night, even on a weekend on equally flimsy excuses. The matter is currently in court, and the state has already lost several applications at the Ogun State High Court and another at the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, a clear indication that their actions lack legal merit.

“Governor Dapo Abiodun is taking political vindictiveness to a shameful and dangerous level, without any regard for extant laws or common decency. We call on all well-meaning citizens, human rights organizations, and legal bodies to stand with us in condemning this egregious abuse of power. We will not be silent in the face of this injustice and will use all legal means at our disposal to ensure that Governor Abiodun is held accountable for his lawless actions.”

Meanwhile, the Ogun State government has dismissed  the former governor’s claims as untrue.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy,  Kayode Akinmade, said the claim by  Senator Daniel’s Media Office, was a deliberate attempt to portray the government in bad light and create disaffection in the Gateway State.

Akinmade accused the media office of feeding members of the public with misinformation.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Ogun State Government has been drawn to a press statement issued by the Media Office of the Senator representing Ogun East and a former Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel,  on Saturday, August 9 and titled “Political Persecution as Governor Abiodun Issues Quit, Demolition Notices on Daniel’s properties in Ogun State.”

“The statement written in extremely bad taste and with intent to cause disaffection and foment chaos in the state alleges that Governor Dapo Abiodun posted Notices of Contravention, Quit and threats of demolition on the Asoludero Court Sagamu private residence of Gbenga Daniel, the Conference Hotels Limited, Sagamu and the hotel Annex of the former Governor of Ogun State, with intent to illegally demolish those properties.

“The statement framed the said notices  purportedly received on Friday, August 8, as a clear demonstration of  “malicious and vindictive abuse of power, hiding behind a newly-enacted law retroactively to target a political opponent.” Nothing can be further from the truth.

“Of course, in what has become a familiar pattern, Senator Daniel and his Media Office have been  ascribing political motives to a routine procedure, suggesting that they have something to hide and do not mind using underhand tactics to achieve their sinister  objectives.

“Contrary to the blatant distortions  of facts and egregious purveyors of falsehood  being propagated by the statement in question, the Ogun State Government is not engaged in any untoward move against Otunba Gbenga Daniel in anyway.

“The fact of the matter, quite simply, is that in his holistic approach to  development efforts across the length and breadth of Ogun State, His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, has  embarked not only on building new communities as exemplified by the affordable housing estates and the yellow roof revolution but also on the redevelopment of Ogun State’s towns and cities through urban renewal.

“This, he started with Ibara GRA in Abeokuta, the state capital, and is  being extended to Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode GRAs.

“This initiative involves the auditing of existing developments within these areas in order to determine the permit status of all types of developments, including houses, schools, hospitals and other commercial buildings.

“This is a statutory and due process requirement which will provide information for any government intervention. And this informed the development audit exercise currently being carried out simultaneously both in Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu GRAs.

“Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s building happens to be within the Sagamu GRA and among those that were served notices as required under the Town Planning Law and Regulation of Ogun State. Many other structures were also similarly served. The exercise is a continuous one until the objective of government for the exercise is achieved.

“This  process is not new. It had been in existence and operated even during his tenure as Governor of the State. The GRA is a government designed and allocated estate and it is  subject to regulatory and oversight functions of government in perpetuity.

“All Otunba Gbenga Daniel needs to do, like every other person’s in  similar situation that have been served with such  notices in that neighbourhood, is to present his planning permit and land title to the relevant government agency office for verification within the time specified in the notices rather than resorting to cheap blackmail. There are no exemptions under the law except as permitted by that Law.

“Did the distinguished senator not conduct a check around the neighbourhood before hastily rushing to the media to demonise Governor Dapo Abiodun and his administration, as usual?

“The statement in question jumped the gun by saying that the Government is focusing on Senator Daniel. That is a barefaced lie. It is the duty of the Government to carry out audits and for someone who has been in office as governor and who is now a Senator to be crying wolf is highly unfortunate.

“It seems that Senator Gbenga Daniel and his crew will do anything they can to drag the name of Governor Dapo Abiodun into every issue imaginable just to score cheap political points. This is not a hallmark of statesmanship, a topic that the distinguished senator likes to talk about with flourish; it is a dark tactic.

“Nobody is bigger than the State. Senator Gbenga Daniel is distinguished no doubt, but he is not bigger than Ogun State. He should submit himself unreservedly to the same laws he once swore twice to uphold. He should refrain from elevating every issue of his contact with government institutions to a personal vendetta by governor “Abiodun, who obviously holds him in high esteem. Since his referenced buildings must have conformed with government regulations, there should not be any problem.

“The distinguished Senator knows the law and has presumably abided by it, so why is he crying foul instead of simply complying with lawful directive, supremely confident in the knowledge that he has done no wrong, and knowing the rights afforded him by the Constitution and the courts?

“No one should assign impure motives to a routine procedure. If anyone is after Senator Gbenga Daniel, it is certainly not the Governor of Ogun State.”

Abiodun, Makinde meet on food, security

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde, yesterday said their states would work to strengthen ties in economy, agriculture, security, among other sectors of interest.

The governors spoke shortly after meeting behind closed doors when Abiodun visited Makinde at the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

Fielding questions from reporters after the meeting in the company of his host, Abiodun said his discussion with Makinde centred on issues of mutual interests and importance, stressing how both states shared strong historical, cultural and economic ties.

Recall that Governor Makinde had paid a similar visit to the Ogun State governor, during which he said the two states would embark on peer reviews, which would see them draw strengths from each other’s areas of comparative advantage.

Governor Abiodun said: “Ogun State proudly remembers the Old Western Region, where Ibadan was the capital, is where it evolved from.

“So, we have ties, very strong ones at that; cultural, historical and of course, economic ties with the people and government of Oyo State.

“Today, I have come to see my brother, His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, to discuss such matters of mutual interests and importance.

“You can see that every day in our sub-region we continue to host major investors. And, we are contiguous to Oyo on so many fronts.

“A time like this has presented itself for us to look at how to ensure that we strengthen that economic relationship. So, we have potential investors in the agriculture sector.

“You know we are all striving for food sovereignty and food security. And, our discussions, which the governor himself will make known to you at the appropriate time, were centred on how we can further collaborate to ensure that we eat what we grow and we grow what we eat, and that we turn our region into the food basket of this country.”

“Oyo State is doing a lot in Fashola. We are also doing a lot in Odeda, in Imeko, in Iwano. And, those areas are border areas with Oyo State.

“So, we have come to discuss that and of course, also security issue as well, which is extremely important to both of us.

“You all know that security is very important and fundamental to socio-economic development.

“You know how both states and other states in the Southwest have championed the issue of Amotekun, which has really been very helpful to providing the required intelligence for our people and strengthening our security architecture.

“So, the issue of security was also a front burner in the discussions. I am sure again, like I said, His Excellency will share with you at the appropriate time the details of our discussions.”

    • Governor signs MoU on Lagos Offtake Guarantee Fund

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has said his administration has put in place measures that will promote agriculture and ensure food security for the state and the nation at large.

The governor said this at the launch of the N500 billion Produce for Lagos, an Offtake Guarantee Fund, an agricultural initiative, held yesterday at the Lagos House, Ikeja.

He signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Lagos Offtake Guarantee Fund

One of the measures the governor noted is the creation of the State Farmers’ Information Management System, where information about the number, location, what they produce, and the size of their farms can be easily accessed at the press of a button.

“This Farmers’ Information Management System is a dashboard that allows us to identify all the farmers in the state. As of today, our state has about 160,000 farmers registered on the dashboard, and we know where they are and what they produce,” he said.

He added that the system has given his administration the edge to know what each farmer in the state grows, just as he said that the system has continuously helped the state to scientifically provide inputs and fertilisers for farmers, thereby helping the state to become one of the few states with the lowest food inflation in the country.

Abiodun, along with the host, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, Dr. Agbu Kefas of Taraba, and the Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Ahmed Ododo, in a discussion segment, highlighted ways their individual states would contribute to the success of the Lagos Produce programme to the benefit of not only Lagos State, but also the nation as a whole.

Governor Abiodun emphasised the need for the Federal Government to initiate similar programmes, which he believed would go a long way to guarantee funds for the growth and development of agriculture in the country.

“I think what Lagos State has done here is something that the Federal Government should look into by nationalising and creating some type of sovereign fund to guarantee food offtake. I think that is what we should be looking at, and I believe that if the Federal Government were to put in place some funds of this nature, probably a Trillion Naira Food Guarantee Fund, it will spin off the entire landscape and ensure that there is indeed food security and food sovereignty.

“What Lagos State has done is truly laudable and very proactive. I think that it has taken a clue from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative in agriculture, where the plan is to farm over 500 million hectares of land. We saw him launching tractors and over 9,000 farm implements a few weeks ago to underscore his commitment to food sovereignty.

“Ogun State is ready for this funding. We have farmers who are already agitated in a scientific manner, so if you can avail them of the funds, they are disciplined, and they will indeed pay back,” he noted.

    Abiodun: it’s a devastating loss

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has described the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a deeply painful and devastating loss to Nigeria.

In a statement issued via his X handle, Governor Abiodun said the passing of the former President had left the country deeply shaken.

“We received with profound shock and sorrow, the news of the passing of former President Buhari. His death is a deeply painful and devastating loss to our nation. Although we know that death is the final debt all mortals must pay, we had hoped, given his past resilience that he would overcome his most recent health challenges. His sudden demise has left us deeply shaken.

Ogun 2027: Why Abiodun must get his successor right, by aide

The Special Assistant to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Youth Development, Mr. Abiola Odetola, has cautioned his principal against being swayed by “political jobbers” and self-serving loyalists seeking to instigate needless political battles ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Ogun State.

In a 19-paragraph statement titled “Securing Ogun State’s Future: Why Governor Abiodun Must Get Succession Right,” Odetola, a policy strategist and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), warned the governor to be wary of those attempting to exploit a yet-to-be-declared ambition by Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) to create division.

He described such actors as “conflict entrepreneurs” who are acting not in the interest of the APC or the state, but to secure personal gain from the crisis they are brewing.

Odetola urged Governor Abiodun to remain sensitive to the political mood of the state, particularly the aspirations of the Ogun West senatorial district, and to clarify his stance on the 2027 succession to avoid unnecessary rivalry and confusion.

He also expressed concern over the silence of the governor on the matter, which he said is leaving many young leaders in a state of uncertainty.

The aide further warned of a formidable opposition in 2027 from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and potential alliances with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that only Senator Adeola has the political strength to counter them effectively.

“Choosing any other candidate from Ogun West to face Adebutu and his likely coalition may spell electoral doom for the APC,” he concluded.

He said, “Your Excellency, do not allow those who fattened themselves at your table to drive you into needless battles. Many fanning the flames of conflict around Yayi’s ambition are not doing it for you, for the state, or for the party but for the profit they hope to reap from confusion. They are, like many of us, beneficiaries of your leadership today but they will not carry the burden of your legacy tomorrow.

“I must say openly what many whisper only in hushed tones: a significant number of political appointees and loyal party members are already sympathetic to Senator Yayi’s candidacy. They see the silent triggers, body language and signals, they see the things you have allowed and those you have opposed through proxies, but are waiting for you to go a step further and at the earliest possible time to either fully embrace the path that guarantees party unity and success or otherwise. Every delay allows opportunists to feed fat on the illusion of rivalry.

“You stand at the threshold of history. By blessing the long-held dream of Ogun West to produce a Governor for the first time since our state’s creation, you will not only balance our politics but earn the enduring love and gratitude of an entire region. As an Egba son, I naturally wished for my kinsmen to get the Oke Mosan seat in 2027 but the reality does not favour an Egba bid in 2027. To force it will only tear the party’s cloth and leave us naked before the cunning claws of the opposition.

“Hon. Ladi Adebutu will come pounding with a heavy war chest. The ADC lurks with new alliances. The only warrior who can meet them pound for pound from the roots to the rooftops is clear his name is YAYI. Picking any other person from Yewaland to compete against this widely accepted choice will only split the calabash and the water will be wasted on the sand.

“Let the hunter check his pouch now, not when he enters the forest. Let the goat return before the leopard’s eyes gleam in the dark. Let Ogun’s drums beat for peace, not war.

“When the story of this season is written, let it be said that Governor Dapo Abiodun built roads, schools, airport and hospitals but above all, gave Ogun the gift of continuity, the true mark of a king who knew when to sheath the sword and bless the next warrior.”
