  • Ajimobi: Tech varsity belongs to Oyo state, not me

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has put to rest the controversy surrounding the ownership of The First Technical University, Ibadan.

The institution, he said, belongs to the state government wholly and not any individual, including himself.

The governor made the clarification while receiving traditional rulers in the state, led by Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who were on a courtesy visit to his office, on Monday.

Among the royal fathers on the entourage drawn from the six zones of the state were Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola; Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Abdul-Ganiy Salawudeen; Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Olusola; and Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

Ajimobi also used the occasion to avail the royal fathers of his administration’s achievements in education, agriculture, peace, security and infrastructure, among others in the last eight years.

He said the state government had not expended any fund on the establishment of the university till date, as all the structures in the institution’s premises were built by foreign donors and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Ajimobi said: “Let me use this opportunity to dispel the rumour going around that I am the owner of The First Technical University, Ibadan.

“People are expected to talk, especially when they lack proper information but if we fail to dispel the rumour, it may stick and become the truth.

“I want to say without any equivocation that I do not own the Technical University, Ibadan.

“It belongs to Oyo State Government wholly. It is easy for people to come up with such rumour because of the successful establishment of the university.

“It is the first of its kind in Nigeria and we are happy that we succeeded in achieving this in our time.

“Nobody believed we could achieve it, especially during a period the country was grappling with economic challenges.”

He added: “Oyo State has had no financial input in the establishment of the university till date.

“All what you see there were done by lovers of the state, indigenes living abroad, international institutions and the CBN.”

He urged other well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to also support the university through construction of structures like students’ hostels, halls, block of classrooms, amphitheatre and sports complex, all of which he said could be named after the donors.

The governor expressed appreciation to the traditional rulers for their unflinching support for his administration in the last eight years, which he said had contributed to the success so far recorded.

Oba Adeyemi said there was no institution that could correctly appraise the achievements of any administration in any state than traditional rulers.

He said the election of Ajimobi for two consecutive terms was a testimony of people’s love and support for him and their acknowledgement of his administration’s success in some critical areas like education, health and infrastructure.

  • Support Makinde to succeed, Ajimobi tells Oyo residents

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has called on people of the state to support the incoming administration of Mr Seyi Makinde to succeed for the good of all.

The governor made the call on Saturday in Ibadan during a special service organised in his honour by the Ibadan branch of Ansar-ud-deen Society (ADS).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ajimobi was honoured by ADS at the event for his contributions to the development of the state and propagation of Islam.

He urged the people to pray and support the incoming administration to succeed, saying that the progress of the state should be the concern of all.

Ajimobi, who hinged the successes recorded by his administration on God and support enjoyed from the people, said he led a Godly and prudent government.

“We have served the people in various capacities and we have given our best in transforming the state. No doubt, we are leaving the state better than we met it.

“Who else can we thank if not God and the people for our achievements in the last eight years? God has been very kind to us for granting us the opportunity to serve for eight years.

“This is the first time anyone would serve as governor for eight years in the history of the state. Makinde’s emergence is God-ordained and we must all support him to succeed for the progress of our state,’’ he said.

The governor used the opportunity to apologise to those he might have offended in the course of his administration, adding no one can occupy position without stepping on toes.

He advised the incoming administration to do everything within its capability to sustain or improve upon the peace and security enjoyed by the people of the state.

Ajiimobi also counseled the people to desist from selfishness, blackmail and backbiting, saying such attitudes were hindrances to self and societal development

Dr Bashir Olanrewaju, ADS Chief Missioner in his sermon, commended Ajimobi for supporting the propagation of Islam through his policies and building a befitting mosque for Muslims to worship.

According to him, “abundant grace of God abide by those who seek well of other people, propagate God’s teachings and seek a better society.

“These you have done and we pray that Almighty God continue to bless you abundantly.’’

He called on the wealthy in the society to always use their wealth in seeking paradise, while urging those in position of authority not to use their powers to torment or oppress the people.

The event was attended by a former Senate Leader and Senator-elect for Oyo Central, Sen. Teslim Folarin, members of the State Executive Council and hosts of other well wishers.

NAN recalls that the governor had on Friday observed Jumat service at the Oja’Oba Central mosque in Ibadan, where he also appreciated God and the people for their support.

Also, Ibadan Obas-in-Council and Oluyole Cheshire Home Management Committee had similarly honoured Ajimobi for his contribution to the development of the state and Nigeria.

  • Crowds thin out in govt houses

The crowds around some of the outgoing state governors are fast thinning out with only 12 days to their exit from office and the  inauguration of their successors.

Eleven of the 36 states will have new helmsmen on May 29.

They are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Imo, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ogun, Oyo and Yobe.

Our  correspondents reported yesterday from Yola, Owerri and Ilorin that the hustle and bustle characteristic of most government houses across the country has slowed down with the imminent change of guards.

But the situation is a bit different in Ibadan and Abeokuta where visitors still continue to besiege  Governors Abiola Ajimobi and Ibikunle Amosun’s offices to see them.

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has come under severe criticism in the last few weeks  over his appointment of Prof.  Kenneth Adeyemi as acting vice chancellor of the State University (KWASU), Malete, two months to the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent, Prof Abdulrasheed Na’Allah.

Students and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the institution as well as the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) and the Governing Council of the university  have all protested against the governor’s decision.

When the outgoing governor recently swore in two new Justices of the State High Court, Justices Olalekan Moses Adegbite and Hammed Aliyu Gegele, and two Kadis of the state Sharia Court of Appeal, Sharafu Hannafi and Abdulraheem Sayi, the ceremony went almost unnoticed.

Attendance  was low and the pomp and ceremony that usually go with such events were missing.

My friends, associates intact, says Ahmed

But the Special Assistant to Governor Ahmed on media and communications, Dr Muyideen Akorede, denied that friends and associates had deserted his principal.

He said  Ahmed’s  closeness to his friends, associates and aides remains  sacrosanct.

Besides, Akorede said the governor, cabinet and other aides are still working.

“His circle of friends also preceded his becoming governor and is still intact and strong,” he said.

He added: “Bear in mind that his friends also have their work and business which they need to attend to. So it’s untrue that Gov Ahmed’s friends and aides are thinning out.”

    Okorocha’s allies switching camps

Many associates of Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State are switching camps as he battles the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the release of his Certificate of Return in respect of the  Imo West Senatorial election.

His camp believes he was betrayed by some of  those he trusted during the last election.

Trouble started in the camp of the Imo governor shortly after he made open his decision to support his then Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu, as his successor against his Deputy, Eze Madumere.

Shortly after then, the disappointed Deputy Governor formed a formidable coalition known as the Imo Coalition against the governor with other close aides, including the then Secretary to the State Governor, Sir George Eche.

Thereafter, the camp of the governor continued to deplete, especially after his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), denied his choice candidate the governorship ticket and gave it to a new comer in the party, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

During the elections proper, some of those that pretended to still be with the governor sabotaged him and worked against his choice of successor, Nwosu, who eventually contested under the Action Alliance (AA).

Soon after the governorship election result was announced in favour of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Government House which used to be a beehive of activities began to be deserted.

Some of Okorocha’s supporters  have allegedly  confessed to diverting campaign funds given to them by the governor  to work for the PDP, all in a bid to worm their way into the heart of the governor-elect.

The governor on Friday hosted Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who commissioned many legacy projects executed by the Okorocha administration.

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, said that Okorocha’s political family is still intact.

He described the reported defection of the governor’s loyalists and political associates as mere speculation.

He said: “There is no need for any of us – governor’s appointees- to leave now.

“Members of the Rescue Mission administration are like one big family and the governor, as the head of the family, has been nice to all of us. I can tell you that we are still intact and there is no cause for alarm.”

In a separate  interview, the media aide to the governor-elect, Mr. Chibuike Onyeukwu, said  that the influx of people into the camp of Ihedioha was on account of  his promise to run a people-oriented government.

“Naturally, people are responding to the people-oriented government promised by the governor-elect. It is a celebrated mandate and the job of rebuilding Imo is a collective responsibility.

“So I will say that these reasons informed the influx of people into the team of the governor-elect,” he said.

  • My govt has spent hugely on education, Ajimobi tells critics

Apparently firing at critics who have accused him of neglecting the educational sector in the state, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state on Wednesday said the Schools’ Governing Board (SGB), among other policies introduced by his administration in every school had committed no less than N8billion into funding of schools.

He said the sum is apart from the State government spending of about N7billion to renovate blocks of classrooms and provision of other facilities in the premises of the many affected schools across the state.

The Governor made the disclosure while commissioning the ultramodern Oba Akinbiyi Model School, Mokola, Ibadan.

According to him, the acceptance of the SGB policy by the people of the state was reflected in the financial, manpower, logistics and intellectual contributions made by the generality of the people of the state to supporting the educational sector.

He said, “The greatest innovation we have made is the introduction of SGB. We have close to 628 secondary schools in the state today which are managed by all stakeholders in every community the school is situated.

“I am happy to inform you that since we started SGB, people have contributed close to eight billion naira while government has contributed over seven billion naira. We are so happy that the resultant effect has been the fact that in the past eighteen years, our results have been the best only in last year.

“It will be recalled that our scientific approach to our mandate compelled the organization of two education summits in the years 2012 and 2016. Both summits identified major gaps in our education sector, a significant part of this gap is the infrastructural decay in our school system. Consequently, we embarked on the construction of world class learning environment with the vision to deliver quality education across the State.

“As an administration, we have presided over most focused, prudent and responsible management of available resources for the maximum benefit of our people for almost eight years.

“Underpinning every step we have taken is our desire for quality in whatever we do. Aside from the three model school edifices, the renovation of several blocks of classrooms in 100 secondary schools across the length and breadth of the State was recently carried out to create conducive learning environment for our students.”

The governor added that the state-owned tertiary institutions also gained tremendously from state funding, which had positioned them to lead other institutions in the country in academic performance, adding that over N46billion has been expended on state-owned higher institutions apart from changes that have been made to pave ways for their growth.

“These efforts are not limited to secondary schools, through the Oyo State Education Trust Fund, we have carried out renovation of many blocks of classrooms, over 40 of them, particularly in the five technical colleges in the state, while the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) carried out massive construction, rehabilitation of public primary schools in our bid to upgrade middle-level technical manpower and make learning environment child-friendly.

“I am pleased to note that the transformation process in education was not limited to basic and secondary schools. Contrary to some uninformed opinions, this administration has succeeded at repositioning all state tertiary institutions, setting them on a path of financial prudence for sustainable management and development.

“Our desire to make affordable tertiary education available to students of Oyo state origin, has led to the upgrading of Oyo State College of Education from monotechnic to Polytechnic, Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa Polytechnics from satellite campuses of the Polytechnic Ibadan to full-fledged polytechnics.

“We have spent close to N46billion on funding state’s tertiary institutions in the past seven years. If you divide it by seven, we have done more than six billion, closer to seven billion every year on education.”

Also on Wednesday, the governor commissioned former Ijokodo-Apete, now rechristened Ambassador Olusaanu Road and Challenge -Efunsetan road that has been renamed Lam Adeshina Road, all in Ibadan, the capital city.

  • Why our administration will remain a reference point – Ajimobi

Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has declared that his administration will remain a reference point in the history of the state despite losing in the last election.

He made the declaration last week at the Public lecture and Fellowship Investiture organised by Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) at the University of Ibadan.

The outgoing governor also emphasized that he was ready for probe should his successor, Seyi Makinde, choose to open the books of his administration.

According to him, the massive infrastructural development, peace and security, investments in education and health, among others, will retain his administration as a reference point in the history of the state regardless of what anyone feels about him.

Ajimobi, who reeled out the achievements of his administration, said they were anchored on a pyramid of development which included restoration, transformation and repositioning.

He said that the pyramid of development gave birth to a new wave of developmental strides in education that led to the establishment of School’s Governing Board (SGB) among other programs.

Ajimobi said: “When they get there, let them cancel all the contracts we have signed. Let them investigate us and if we have stolen, they should arrest us.

“The SGB model led to a significant improvement in public schools students’ performance in public examinations. Today, we can boast of the best results in WASSCE in the last 18 years.

“We have given our best to the state and we will continue to do this. The feats recorded by our administration placed Oyo as one of the five safest haven of investment in the country.

  • I am ready for probe – Ajimobi

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State says he is ready for a probe of his administration.

He spoke on Thursday at a Public lecture and Fellowship Investiture organised by Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) at the Subomi Balogun Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was attended by members of the State Executive Council and some heads of security agencies.

“We will work till the last day of this administration. We don’t care about what some people are saying all about. As I am talking to you today, this administration still has 18 days and some hours to expire.

“When they get there, let them cancel all the contracts we have signed. Let them investigate us and if we have stolen, they should arrest us,’’ he said.

Ajimobi, who reeled out the achievements of his administration, said they were anchored on a pyramid of development which included restoration, transformation and repositioning.

  • Court to Oyo governor, House of Assembly: you can’t sack, suspend elected council chairmen

An Oyo State High Court Monday restrained the Governor and the House of Assembly from suspending or removing elected local government chairmen, vice chairmen and councilors.

It also ruled that the state electoral commission cannot conduct another election into the positions until the expiration of the three-year tenure of the incumbents.

The chairmen and others were elected on May 12 last year.

The court, presided over by Justice A. Aderemi, also restrained the state government from freezing or withholding the bank accounts of the councils while their tenure lasts.

Justice Aderemi gave the judgment in a suit filed by 11 chairmen and councilors led by Bashorun Bosun Ajuwon. They were the claimants in the case. The suit challenged the constitutionality of the Oyo State Local Government Law 2001 (as amended) which empowers the governor to remove the chairmen and the councilors.

According to the claimants, the outgoing governor Abiola Ajimobi, held a meeting with the chairmen, other elected members and top leaders of the party shortly after the 2019 elections. At the meeting, they recalled that the governor announced that he would dissolve the elected local government leaders as empowered by the Oyo State Local Government Law 2001 (as amended) and appoint t caretaker teams with a view to restructuring the party in the state. The governing party, All Progressives Congress (APC) lost the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Section 11 of the Local Government Law of Oyo State, 2001(as amended) empowers the Governor of Oyo State to appoint a 7-member transition committee to run the affairs of the council for a period to be determined by the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Section 21 of the same law also empowers the Oyo State House of Assembly to remove a democratically elected chairman and vice chairman whose tenure is yet to expire by a resolution.

But the elected chairmen and councilors challenged the constitutionality of the law.

The claimants sought 10 prayers and had all of them granted.

The court held that the Oyo State Local Government Law was  in conflict with Section 7(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As amended) and thus unconstitutional, ultra vires, null and void.

It declared that the Oyo State law breached Section 7(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As amended) and is thus unconstitutional, ultra vires, null and void and of no effect whatsoever.

Justice Aderemi also affirmed the three-year tenure of the elected officials and restrained the governor and the House of Assembly from removing or suspending them of freezing or withholding their accounts.

In granting the reliefs, the judge relied on the doctrine of stare decisis relied on the Supreme Court case of Governor, Ekiti State v. Olubunmi [2017] All FWLR (Pt. 873), ATTORNEY-GENERAL OF PLATEAU STATE & ORS V. HON. CHIEF ANTHONY GOYOL & ORS (2007) LPELR-12875 (CA) and other cases.

  • I’ve nothing to do with Sugar’s killers – Ajimobi

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has denied obstructing or manipulating investigation into the murder of Olatoye Temitope a.k.a. sugar, who represented Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency in the House of Representatives.

The late lawmaker’s elder brother, Olajide Olatoye, on Thursday, accused Ajimobi and the Oyo State Assembly of facilitating the release of the suspected killers.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Bolaji Tunji, Ajimobi said the case was already before the police.

The investigators, according to him, are already doing their job and have not contacted him on any challenges.

He added his government is known for never interfering with the course of justice.

According to him: “If a citizen of the state dies, I am not sure the governor will be the one that will say people responsible for it should not be punished.

“So, I think they should go and get their information right. The governor is not privy to that kind of information and he will not support sweeping such a case under the carpet.

“So, if people are saying the governor is trying to facilitate the release of the principal suspect and others, it is not true.

“The governor said when the man died that those who perpetrated the act would be brought to justice. And he has never said anything contrary to what he said when the man died, and that still stands.

“What the family should do now is to tell the police to do their job the way it should be done.”

He added: “I don’t know the kind of bold statement they are expecting the government to make.

‘’The governor has already directed the security agencies to fish out the culprits, and they are on the case.

“If the police are facing any challenge in their investigation, they are supposed to get across to the governor, and tell him their suggestions. The governor will now take it up from there.

“I think they should go back to the police to find out how far they have gone in the matter instead of saying the governor wants to facilitate the release of the suspects. So, people should always get their facts right.

“The governor will never be a party to a situation whereby an investigation being done by a statutory body will be compromised. The governor will never do anything that is against the law.

“Why do we have peace in the state today? It is because people know that the governor will never act contrary to the law.

“So, if people are saying the governor or the government is trying to subvert investigation, it is a no-no. The governor will never do that.”

  • Ajimobi facilitated release of Sugar’s killer, brother alleges

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi facilitated the release of killers of Hon Olatoye Temitope a.k.a Sugar, who represented Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency in the House of Representatives, his elder brother, Mr. Olajide Olatoye, has alleged.

Olajide made the accusation on Thursday during the lying- in- state for the slain federal lawmaker held at the House of Chiefs, Agodi, Ibadan.

He noted that information reaching him indicated Ajimobi, in conjunction with some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, were facilitating release of some suspects arrested in connection with the unfortunate assassination incident.

“Governor Abiola Ajimobi should desist from facilitating the release of the killers of my brother, let justice prevail.

“Oyo State government should remove hand in the investigation of the incident and allow the perpetrators of the evil act face the wrath of the law. Being a serving Oyo State House of Assembly member does not mean that you are untouchable,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Olatoye’s family, the younger brother to the deceased, Mr. Dotun Olatoye, lamented the killers were yet to be nabbed despite all the support the family had been receiving from the federal and state government.

He pointed out that there was need to value human life because human life is sacred, wondering how a serving federal lawmaker will be killed without proper investigation and arrest of the perpetrators.

“Sugar was a great icon and the generalissimo of the masses, he has paid all his tributes while on earth, he was a man of peace, even when he lost an election, he remained calm,” he stated.

Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olagunju Ojo, said the death of the late lawmaker showed that Oyo State has lost an illustrious son that will not be forgotten.

Olagunju reiterated that the deceased was monumental and unique while alive, noting that no one ever expected him to die like that.

“In life, it is not how far, but how well, on behalf of the 8th Assembly, we wish you eternal life and journey mercy,” he declared.

Al member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Segun Olaleye, called on the Olatoye’s family not to retaliate the unfortunate incident.

He said they should instead focus on how to take care of the deceased wife and children.

He said: “Sugar told me in my dream that no one should take revenge on his behalf but his wife and children should be well taken care of.”

Olaleye however promised to sponsor two of the deceased children to university level, noting that Oyo State has lost a freedom fighter and a goal getter.
