  • Minimum wage: Ajimobi, Makinde bicker over Labour negotiation

Following his earlier promise to make workers in the state happier as soon as the federal government approves the N30,000 national minimum wage, the Oyo state government said it will on Monday open up discussions with labour leaders on the modalities for the implementation of the new wage.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi had on January 8, this year assured the labour leaders on the implementation when the workers visited his Agodi, Ibadan office during a peaceful protest to demand the implementation of N30,000 as the new national minimum wage.

The new minimum wage was approved and signed by President Muhammad Buhari on April 18, 2019 for immediate implementation.

The notice of the meeting was conveyed in a congratulatory message sent to the labour leaders by the Oyo state government on the successful conduct of its state congress which produced Comrade Titiola Sodo as the new NLC state chairman.

The message was signed by the State’s Information Commissioner, Mr Toye Arulogun.

But, in a swift reaction, the Governor-Elect, Mr Seyi Makinde cautioned the outgoing Ajimobi’s administration against negotiating the implementation of the new minimum wage with the labour unions.

Makinde, in a statement by his spokesperson, Prince Dotun Oyelade “queried the intention and sincerity of the outgoing government to open negotiation with the labour unions on the implementation of N30,000 minimum wage in Oyo come this Monday which is exactly 30 days to the exit of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi led outgoing administration.

The governor-elect stressed that there ”is nothing the lame duck government wants to achieve other than to complicate things for the In-coming government in exactly the same manner it is doing in awarding fresh contracts and rolling out largesse to fellow politicians and friends .”

Emphasizing that he looks forward to a progressive relationship with the new Sodo led NLC excos, Makinde warns against what he described as “any booby traps in the planned negotiation by the outgoing government.”

The Governor-elect pointed out that he was satisfied with the level of rapport he had with the NLC during and after the election and hope that this will be maintained as the new NLC executive assumes the mantle of leadership.

He reiterated his commitment towards ensuring that nothing short of the interest of workers will be acceptable to his administration as he applauded the rancour-free consensus that heralded the new Chairman as a good sign that democratic maturity has always been a virtue of the NLC, saying he believes that the new NLC leadership is circumspect enough to understand the ongoing theatrics.

  • Leadership change: Ajimobi warns NURTW against violence

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Friday warned the members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state to eschew any form of violence and crisis in their effort at changing power.

The advice is coming following feelers from some quarters that a faction in the body is threatening to take over power from the incumbent, immediately a change of guard occurs at the state governorship level.

Ajimobi gave the advice while playing host to the National President of the Union, Mr Najeem Yasin who led other national officers of the union to his (Ajimobi’s) office on a courtesy call.

Giving a remark, the governor noted that the union must stick to the provisions of its constitutions in terms of change of power and ensure that the era of using cutlasses and guns to take over motor parks and garages in the state should be gone forever.

While thanking the NURTW boss for his support to achieving peace in the state chapter of the union, Governor Ajimobi enjoined a strict adherence to the Union’s constitution in the selection of its leaders.

Ajimobi said, “Our administration came on board when the state was a garrison command. There was brigandage everywhere caused mainly by the activities of NURTW members. There were so many no-go-areas across the state, especially in Ibadan.

“We promised not to interfere in the activities of the union and restore peace to the state which we achieved tremendously. Our administration did very well by whatever yardstick anyone might intend to use and we are the most peaceful, successful and security-conscious administration in the history of the state.

“I am proud to say that whatever we have achieved today in Oyo state, especially in terms of peace and security, Alhaji Yasin and his executives contributed to it.

“On your election, just follow the law and do whatever the law says. Don’t bend it. And leaders must know that anywhere you are, don’t want to be there forever because you cannot be there forever.”

Speaking earlier, the NURTW boss assures that nobody or group can take over leadership of the union unconstitutionally noting that the era of taking over motor parks with guns, cutlasses and violence is long gone in the history of the union in the state.

He added that all transitions at any level of the union would be in compliance with its constitution, calling on members to sustain the peace established under the Ajimobi-led administration.

“Your Excellency, we are here in Oyo State to meet our members and after the meeting, I felt it is important to visit you. We want to appreciate you for the peace that reigned in our union in the state.

“Since the inception of our union in Oyo State, we have never enjoyed relative peace like the one witnessed under your administration. Today, we have forgotten the era of using cutlass and other dangerous weapons to take over the leadership of the union in the state.

“Anyone who tries to take over unconstitutionally or violently should be ready to face the full wrath of the law. We are now affiliated to the International Transport Federation, and so we have gone beyond brigandage and violence.

“Some people have been going around that by May 29, another leadership is taking over but I have told them that it cannot be because it is against our Unions constitution.

“By August, we would have our delegate conference where I will step down for another leadership to come in. In October, we will have state delegate conferences across the 36 states.

“We know the sacrifices you have made in our union to enjoy the current level of peace and stability and we will never allow anyone takes us back. And that is why we have come to thank you.”

  • Ajimobi inaugurates 26-member transition committee

Governor Abiola Ajimobi has inaugurated a 26-man committee to prepare the ground for the May 29 change of political baton in Oyo State.

The committee christened, “Koseleri”, comprises 16 members from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) led administration.

The incoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government has 10 members.

Speaking at the brief inauguration at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s office, Ajimobi recounted the various historical feat his administration had achieved in the state’s political and governance trajectory.

He said: “We make history again today as the first administration in Oyo State that the incumbent governor will inaugurate the Transition Committee comprising of representatives of both the incumbent and the incoming governments, more in a congenial atmosphere.

“Consequently, today’s event is another ‘Koseleri’ in the annals of the history of our dear state. It is also pertinent to note that for the first time in the history of Oyo State, an incumbent governor formally received in audience a governor-elect.

“These for us are not just stunts for making history, but a demonstration of our strong belief in the true tenets of democracy, good governance, politics without bitterness and the ‘Ajumose’ spirit of collective responsibility. Hopefully, future administrations will sustain such a collaborative spirit and not make it ‘Koselemo’.

“We have carefully selected a team that we believe possesses a cooperative spirit and cerebral capacity for the job at hand. Worthy of note is that this is the first time that individuals in the Oyo State cabinet will be nominated by an incumbent government to serve as transition committee members.

“This emphasises our conviction that governance is a serious business to be supervised by competent hands.  More importantly, it is an expression of the commitment of government in ensuring the success of this all-important process that will impact positively on the progress and development of our state.”

The governor further gave the terms of reference of the committee as including to “liaise between the outgoing administration and the incoming administration in the state with a view to ensuring a smooth transition arrangement”.

“Evolve the framework for the handing-over, and organise befitting handing-over and taking-over ceremonies.

“I wish to emphasise that the major assignment of the Transition Committee is to organise befitting handing over and taking over ceremonies. It is not designed to disturb the smooth running of government until the constitutionally stipulated date of hand-over, though there may be needful clarifications,” the governor said.

The committee is to serve for a month with effect from the inauguration and will submit its reports to the governor.

The committee to be chaired by the Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli has top government functionaries including the governor’s aides, commissioners, special advisers and civil servant.

Mr. David Olatunde (Permanent Secretary, Civil Service Commission) will serve as the secretary.

  • Court charges Ajimobi, three others with contempt

An Oyo State High Court holden in Oyo town yesterday charged the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, with contempt.

Also charged alongside the governor are the Oyo State Government, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, and the state’s Attorney General.

The ruling was delivered at Court 1, presided over by Justice Iyabo Yerima, on Thursday.

The subject of the litigation bothers on the revocation of contract awarded to Rahvet International Limited by the Oyo State Government for the construction of a 10,000 metric tonne 4 bin silos projects situated on Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town.

The projects currently stand at about 85 per cent completion.

In a case with suit number HOY/06/2019 between Rahvet International Limited (the claimant/applicant) and Governor of Oyo State, the Oyo State government, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development and state Attorney General as the first, second, third and fourth defendants/respondents respectively, the claimant (Rahvet Int’l Ltd) had filed an application by way of motion exparte for two interim injunctions from the court, which were granted.

The court in a ruling dated 9th April had restrained both the claimant and the defendants from going to the project site or doing any kind of work on the site pending the determination of the legality of the contract’s termination by the government.

The motion ex-parte, as sought by the claimant and granted by the court, was an “interim injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, their assignees, officials, commissioners, permanent secretaries, agents, servants, privies or otherwise howsoever from forcibly taking over and breaking into the project site of the 10,000 metric tons 4 bin silos project situated at Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town pending the determination of the interlocutory application.

“Interim injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, their assignees, officials, commissioners, permanent secretaries, agents, servants, privies or otherwise howsoever from tampering with or in any way dealing with any or all of the equipment stored by the Applicant within the premises of the project site of the 10,000 metric tons 4 bin silos project situated at Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town or in any way attempting to install the equipment without the active and direct participation and main involvement of the Claimant and its Technical partners, that is, the Chinese equipment manufacturers, China National Heavy Machine Corporation (CHMC) pending the determination of the interlocutory application.”

During proceedings, counsel to the claimants, Mr Bode Elemide, told the court that he was surprised that the defendants could “deliberately, callously, maliciously and flagrantly flout the order of the Court”, just a day after the judgment by breaking into the project site and replacing the padlock.

He further told the court the names of some prominent personalities and top government functionaries who were part of the team that ‘invaded’ the project site to perform certain fetish ceremonies, adding that filing the contempt proceeding was in accordance with Order 42 Rules 9 and 10 of the Oyo State High Court (Civil Procedures) Rules, 2010.

Responding, Counsel to all the defendants, Mr Nojeem Abiola, a deputy director with the state ministry of justice denied knowledge of the incident, adding that he was not informed or carried along by the defendants.

He said he could also not ascertain the true position of the claimants on the invasion and disobedience of the court order before the Thursday court session.

Before giving the ruling, Justice Yerima noted that the court does not pry its eyes into the affairs of the other arms of government, wondering why any arm of government should disobey a court order.

She also expressed shock that the Counsel to the defendants could stand to defend the defendants when he should actually defend the integrity of the profession by encouraging that the court order be adhered to.

She later ruled that the case be adjourned to May 14 for hearing on why the defendants should not be committed to prison for flouting the April 9thcourt order.

  • Oyo steps up agric production with 33 excavators

The Oyo State government has officially taken delivery of 33 Caterpillar Next Generation Excavators from Mantrac Nigeria Limited at a ceremony held at the governor’s office Agodi, Ibadan, the state capital.

The 33 excavators were formally presented to the 33 local government areas by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Present at the event was the Deputy Governor, Otumba Moses Adeyemo, top government officials, traditional and religious leaders. A delegation of Mantrac Nigeria Limited, the authorised dealer for Caterpillar Products and Services in Nigeria, led by its Public Sector Manager, Mr. Alex Nwoko was present for the formal hand over.

In his address, Governor Ajimobi said: “The excavators were acquired in order to boost agricultural production, improve rescue operations, urban renewal and for other environmental intervention purposes.”

He recalled that one of the excavators was effectively deployed for rescue operations during a recent building collapse in Ibadan. It helped in rescuing victims from the rubble.

He said: “The latest investment is in addition to the 33 machinery earlier acquired. The earthmovers will be used by the 33 local government areas and the 35 local council development areas (LCDAs).”

He noted that the equipment are of high quality, adding that “we are proud to be associated with you at Mantrac Nigeria, your products and your professionalism. The inauguration of the excavators is another unprecedented feat.”

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Bimbo Kolade said the acquisition of the excavators was not just another first in Oyo State, but in Nigeria.

“There has not been a single government in Nigeria that has, at one time, inaugurated 33 excavators. These are not just excavators but the latest of their kind anywhere in the world. Indeed, this is another first for us. Each excavator comes with full automation, that is, it can be controlled so much so that it can only move within the desired limit,” he said.

The Public Sector Manager, Mantrac Nigeria, Mr. Alex Nwoko described the occasion as “a great honour”

“We are proud to say that this is the highest single investment by any state or Federal Government in road construction in over 20 years. So, we are happy to be part of this partnership.

“It is also remarkable to note that the excavators are caterpillar next generation of excavators (NGE) and I am proud to announce that Oyo State government is one of its first and largest users in Africa.

“It reduces maintenance cost by up to 25 per cent, increases operational efficiency up to 40 per cent and increases fuel efficiency by up to 15 per cent, over previous models. To ensure good return on investment, Mantrac Nigeria provides Caterpillar-backed service agreement, covering regular parts and service, two-year extended warranty as well as operators training.

“As the machines are remotely located, the caterpillar advanced product link technology will ensure their effective monitoring from the state headquarters to help achieve equipment availability. We are committed to offering our support to ensure adequate return on this investment,” he said.

The Chairman Ibadan North West Local Government Area, Bashorun Bosun Ajuwon, on behalf of his colleagues, promised to use the excavators judiciously.

  • Oyo to enact law to end farmers/herdsmen clashes

Baring any last minute change, Oyo state government will before the end of the outgoing tenure sign into law, a bill that will forestall the age long clashes between herders and farmers in different parts of the state.

Assuring that the law would be passed before April 30, the state government said its effort at ensuring peace between the duo of farmers and herders through a regular stakeholders meeting is yielding positive result.

The government spoke through the Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Community Relations, Mr Abidemi Siyanbade during a stakeholders meeting organised by the state Police Command at its Eleyele, Ibadan, headquarters as parts of the Command’s efforts at facilitating peaceful deliberations between farmers and herders in the state.

Siyanbade said “The government has made a lot of progress in dousing the incessant conflict between the farmers and herders in this state.

“And before the end of this month, grazing control bill to address the issues between farmers and herders will be passed by the house of assembly.

“We will also ensure that the peace committee meeting at the local government levels will be revived.

“The grazing control law will address how cattle can be brought into the state and how herders will register. We will no longer allow cows to me moved into the state on the feet or roaming but through vehicles and truck.

“Local herders are not the problem, but the major and the imminent problem is with immigrant herders. We are very sure that once this law is passed, all these issues arising from farm invasions, cattle rustling and attack on either farmers and herders will all be laid to rest.”

The state Commissioner of Police Shina Olukolu in his welcome remark identified certain issues that had contributed to the crisis to include, mutual suspicion between farmers and herders, impatience, the roles of mischief makers among others.

He condemned the use of minors as shepherds and warned that both the farmers and herders must not let the long standing relationship between them be sacrifice on the basis of their means of livelihood.

Olukolu said, “The use of minors who have no ability to control the animals, gives room for the animals to unwittingly stray into farmers land to wreak havoc.

“Sometimes, the minors deliberately allow the cattle stray into farm lands and at other times, it goes beyond their control but we need patience and understanding to have lasting peace.”

However, the State Chairman, All farmers Association of Nigeria, Mr Adeniji Moses lamented that the bill has been promised since 2016 and nothing has been done about it.

He assured that the promised legislation had remained the only hope of a lasting solution on the issue of recurring crisis between the farmers and the herders.

The state chairman, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Yakubu Bello commended the Oyo state police for organising stakeholders’ meeting, noting that the bane of the problem had been the impatience on the part of both parties anytime issues arises.

Also speaking, the state chairman, Police Community Relations Committee, Mr Peter Omofaye assured that effective community policing is the surest way to help both the farmers and herdsmen identify the bad eggs causing trouble in the affected parts of the state.

He appealed to all the stakeholders at the meeting to work together with the police but making information available to nip issues in the bud before it turned out into crisis.

The meeting was attended by farmers, herders, community leaders, religious leaders, council chairmen among others.

  • No regrets losing senatorial election —Ajimobi

Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, yesterday said God’s kindness made it possible for him to break the second term jinx and record many unprecedented feats, saying he had no reason to regret over his senatorial election loss.

The governor said this while addressing guests at a thanksgiving service to mark the 60th birthday of his wife, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, held at the Government House, Ibadan.

On hand to rejoice with the state’s first family were the Wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo; Wife of Ekiti State governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; her Imo State counterpart, Mrs Nkechi Okorocha; wife of Ogun State Governor-elect, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun; and wife of the immediate past governor of Osun State, Mrs Sherifat Aregbesola, among other dignitaries.

Having ruled for eight uninterrupted years, which marked the first in the history of the state, the governor said that God had been merciful and kind to him to use him to rewrite the history of the state for good.

Ajimobi said that he, therefore, had no reason to regret or worry over his failed senatorial bid and his unsuccessful attempt to hand over to a successor from his party, the All Progressives Congress.

He said: “God has been kind to me for making it possible for me to break the second term jinx, and in the last eight years, it is on record that we recorded so many unprecedented feats for which posterity and history makers will be kind to us.

“If you consider the key performance index, we have done well. It is true that I would have loved to go to the Senate. It is also true that I would have loved to hand over to a successor from my party. But God said no, and who are we to query Him? For what He has done for us, we have many reasons to thank Him.

“As individuals, if we can think deeply on a daily basis, we will know that God has been kind to us. I’m the 27th governor of this state and unarguably the longest serving in the history of Oyo State.

“So, I want people to be happy for us because God has used us to do many things in this state. I therefore want to say to our supporters again that there is no cause for regrets. They should stop ruing or brooding over our questionable loss in the last election.”

Extolling the virtues of his wife of 39 years, the governor described her as an embodiment of Godliness and epitome of pure love.

Ajimobi added that her wife’s generosity, philanthropic gestures and warmth had endeared her to people from every stratum of the society who daily describe her in glowing terms and honorifics.

Recalling the story of how they met at a Lagos bank 40 years ago, the governor said it was love at first sight and that he had the inkling that she would be his wife on their first date.

Ajimobi said: “The love I have for my wife is because she is an epitome of pure love; she’s always giving without expecting anything in return; she’s very loving, accommodating, caring, generous, and she has the rare gift of keeping old and new friends, including school mates of over 40 years.

“Flori, you are an embodiment of Godliness; you are the snow in my winter; you are the USP (unique Selling Point) of my brand; you are my masterpiece of nature. Ever since we met, you have been making high deposit of love, care and Godliness in my life’s bank account; you have been making huge deposit in my emotional bank account. I love you today, and I will always love you.”

  • Ajimobi to Makinde: shun politics of bitterness

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has advised the incoming People’s Democratic Party (PDP) administration to focus on developmental issues instead of its renewed campaign of calumny against his person, family and administration.

The governor, who spoke yesterday in a statement by his Special Adviser, Communication and Strategy, Mr. Bolaji Tunji, said the renewed campaign of calumny was aimed at rubbishing his eight-year selfless service.

But, the governor-elect, Seyi Makinde, said it would be unnecessary and unhelpful to embark on a campaign of calumny against the out-going governor.

Ajimobi said more than two weeks after the general elections have produced winners and losers, the opposition parties ought to start talking about their plans for the state and how to build on the foundation of development laid by his administration.

The governor said he was appalled by the unprovoked media attacks by the opposition parties, especially sympathisers of the PDP and its governorship candidate, who were still practising politics of bitterness that Oyo State, under his tenure, has since left behind.

The governor appealed to the traditional and online media practitioners to be circumspect in churning out unverified information being supplied to them by their unscrupulous sources, who were bent on spreading inflammatory rhetoric.

He said the purveyors of falsehood have recruited some online medium to carry out some of their nefarious activities.

Ajimobi said: “Now that elections have been won and lost, there should be an end to acrimonious and incendiary comments. Political discussion has moved from the pre-2011 era. Our focus is on politics of issues and development.

“That is what we expect from them, not personal attacks and falsehood-laced statements indicating their unpreparedness for governance.

“I’m not unaware that during campaigns some politicians adopted the campaign of calumny as strategy believing it would give them undue advantage, but such does not last. What the electorate expects is to be educated on their blueprint for the development of the state.”

However, the governor-elect, while replying Ajimobi, denied any campaign of calumny against the present administration, saying such would be unnecessary and unhelpful at this point in time.

He said: “We deny campaign of calumny against Ajimobi. Such won’t be necessary and it is unhelpful.

“Our major grouse is that awarding fresh contracts worth over N30 billion in one fell swoop and under mischievous circumstances will be a disservice to our state, if we do not cry out.

“We do not need the outgoing governor to tell us to inform our people what we want to do for them because they already know during the course of the campaign.

“What the people never knew was the extent to which the outgoing government will go to attempt to empty government coffers to leave frustrate the incoming administration.”
