    Court jails man six months over N7,000 theft

    A Grade 1 Area Court Karmo, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced one Usman Abubakar to six months imprisonment for joint act and extortion.

    Abubakar, a resident of Kado fish market, Abuja was arraigned on a two-count charge.

    The Presiding judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, did not  give  the convict any option of fine.

    Sadiq said he must serve the punishment as deterrent to other would-be offenders and warned him to desist from committing crimes.

    “Be dedicated to your business,” Sadiq told the convict.

    Before the judgement​ was delivered, Abubakar, had pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, claiming that the devil pushed him to the crime.

    He promised to be more dedicated to his fish business.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, told the court that one Ibrahim Buba, of 4th Avenue Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwarimpa Police Station, on July 28.

    Auhioboh said on that same date in Gwarimpa,  the convict and one other person , who is now at large, attacked and threatened​ to kill him with a long sharp knife.

    They collected N7, 000 cash and one Techno phone valued N20, 000.

    During police investigation, he confessed that his friend who is now at large, is  in possession of the stolen  money.

    The prosecutor said that the offence is punishable under sections 79 and 292 of the Penal Code.

    Court jails dry cleaner three months for theft of ‘burukutu’ pots

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in the FCT, on Monday sentenced a 33-year-old dry cleaner, Auwal Usman, to three months imprisonment for stealing two pots used for cooking Burukutu, a local drink.

    Usman, a resident of Utako village, Abuja, who was arraigned for theft of the two pots, pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N10,000.

    He warned Usman to desist from criminal activities and ordered him to pay N25,000 as compensation to the complainant.

    He also ordered that the recovered pots be returned to the owner.

    The First Information Report (FIR) stated that one Charity Bulus of Utako village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station on July 13.

    The prosecuting counsel, Mr Dalhatu Zannah, told the court that 11 big pots used in brewing the local drink valued N66,000 belonging to the complainant had disappeared from June 24 to date.

    Zannah informed the court that the convict criminally went to the complainant’s shop on July 13 and stole the two pots valued at N11,000.

    He said that the convict was apprehended and handed over to the police immediately for proper investigation.

    Zannah said that during police investigation and interrogation, the convict admitted committing the offence.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    He, therefore, urged the court for summary trial in line with Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

    Man jailed two months for possession of stolen property

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 24-year-old man, Jerry Isaac, to two months imprisonment for being in possession of stolen property.

    Isaac of Jabi Motor Park, was convicted on a two-count charge of joint act and being in possession of stolen property.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, convicted Isaac as he admitted committing the offence and begged for leniency.

    Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N10, 000 fine and warned him to be of good behaviour.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Dalhatu Zannah, had told the court that a crime prevention unit, led by one Insp. Abbah Gabriel, arrested and brought the convict to the Utako Police Station, Abuja on July 14.

    Zannah said that on the same date at about 1.30 a.m., while the police team was raiding the black spot around Jabi Park, they caught the convict and two other now at large.

    He said that they hid in a back spot, located inside Jabi Park, harass and collect money and other valuables from passengers who arrive late in the night at the park.

    He also told the court that the convict was caught with one Tecno cell phone and other items suspected to have been stolen.

    The prosecutor said that during police interrogation, the convict confessed to have stolen the cell phone from a passenger.
    Zannah said the offence contravened Section 79 and 319 of the Penal Code.

    Woman in court for negligent conduct

    The Police on Tuesday arraigned a woman, Halima Umar, in a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for alleged negligent conduct and causing grievous hurt.

    Dalhatu said that the complainant alleged that the defendant allowed her little daughter, Falina Umar,4, to push his own daughter, Juliet Oche,2, down from a storey building.

    The complainant rushed her daughter to the Gwarimpa Hospital, Abuja and spent N26, 500 for her medical bill, the defendant was asked to pay the bill, but she refused, Dalhatu said.

    The prosecutor also said that the offences contravened Sections 196 and 247 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty, adding that “the two kids always play together.’’

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N20, 000 and one surety in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until Aug. 8, for further hearing.

    Man bags six months jail term for stealing gas cylinder

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced 26-year-old man, Abubakar Yakubu, to nine months imprisonment for stealing cooking gas cylinder worth N18,000.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, sentenced Yakubu accordingly as he admitted committing the offence.

    He, however, gave the convict an option to pay N6,000 fine, and warned him to be of good behavior.

    Yakubu, who resides around Aminu Kano Cresent Wuse 2, Abuja, was sentenced on a count charge.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, had informed the court that on July 3, one David Jime of Gwarinpa Works and Housing Estate , Abuja , reported the case at Gwarinpa Police Station.

    Auhioboh said that Jime reported the incident for proper investigation which led to the arrest of the convict.

    She said that the convict entered the complainant’s compound on the same date at about 1 p.m. and stole the cylinder valued at N18, 000.

    Auhioboh further said that the convict was arrested at the estate’s gate as he tried to escape with the said cylinder, without the consent of the owner.

    The prosecuting counsel said that the cooking gas cylinder was recovered from the convict during police investigation and interrogation.

    Following the plea of the convict, the prosecutor prayed the court to try him summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

    Police arraign scavenger over attempted theft, trespass

    A 28-year-old scavenger, Abubakar Salisu, was on Wednesday arraigned at a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for alleged criminal trespass and attempted theft.

    Salisu, who reside in Ereke Junction, Karmo, Abuja, was arraigned on charges of criminal trespass, mischief and attempt to commit theft.

    He was, however, released on bail by the court in the sum of N20, 000, with a surety in like sum, after he denied committing the offences.

    In the ruling, the judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, ordered that the surety should produce his current utility bills and reasonable means of identification.

    Sadiq also directed that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

    The prosecuting counsel, Mrs Auhioboh Florence, had informed the court that on July 3, one Nev Othaniel of Karmo, reported the matter at Karmo Police Station.

    Florence said that the defendant, at about 1 a.m. on July 3, criminally and dishonestly broke into the complainant’s house with intention to commit an offence of theft.

    She told the court that while the defendant was in the process of stealing, he was caught by the complainant and was taken to the police station for proper investigation.

    Florence said that during police investigation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of himself.

    She told the court that the offences contravened Sections 327, 349 and 95 of the Penal Code.

    The judge adjourned the case to Aug. 9.

    Man jailed for attempt to defraud with counterfeit dollars

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, a 31-year-old man, Mohammed Masur, who attempted to defraud another man with  counterfeit dollars.

    The judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, sentenced Masur following his guilty plea to a count charge.

    Sadiq urged Masur, a resident of Tunga Kwaso Deidei, to be of good behaviour.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Dalhatu Zannah, said that Masur attempted to defraud Mr Uche Okeke of Wuye, Abuja, with fake dollars on May 19 at the ABM plaza, but was arrested after Okeke raised an alarm.

    He told the court that Okeke reported the case to the Utako Police Station on the same day.

    Zannah said that 214 pieces of counterfeit dollars were recovered from Masur after his arrest.

    The prosecutor noted that the offence contravened Section 434 of the Penal Code.

    Tricycle rider jailed one month for obstructing traffic

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced a 25-year-old tricycle rider, Mustafa Balla, to one month in prison for obstructing traffic.

    Balla of Gwarinpa village pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced accordingly on the two-count charge of causing obstructing and driving without licence levelled against him.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N5, 000 fine and advised him to be a good citizen.

    The prosecutor, Mrs Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that one Gloria Lrimiya, attached to Life Camp Police Station, reported the incident on May 25.

    Auhioboh said Lrimiya arrested the convict along Life Camp Karmo road by Kado fish market at about 8 am on the same date.
    She said the convict drove his tricycle with Registration LSD 708 QH recklessly and hindered free passage of persons and vehicles on a public high way

    Rainy season: NURTW caution drivers against reckless driving

    The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nasarawa State chapter, has advised motorists against over speeding and reckless driving to prevent accidents during the rainy season.

    Alhaji Salihu Adamu, the state NURTW Chairman, gave this advice on Wednesday in an interview with newsmen after he paid homage to the Osu Agwada, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, in his palace at Agwada, Agwada Development Area of the state.

    He said that the visit was to seek for his royal blessings and support to enable the union succeed.

    Adamu also advised passengers to always call the attention of drivers while speeding, driving recklessly and overtaking wrongfully for their safety.

    “Members of our union and motorists generally should always observe traffic rules and regulations and avoid reckless driving, speeding and wrongful overtaking to avoid unnecessary accidents especially now that rainy season has set in,’’ he said.

    Adamu attributed the high rate of road crashes in the country to over speeding and reckless driving.

    He, therefore, urged motorists to avoid speeding in the interest of their lives and the lives of other road users.

    The chairman restated the commitment of the union to continue to sensitise its members in order to obey traffic rules and regulations as well as support government policies on transportation.

    “We will not relent in our efforts in educating, advising and sensitising our members and other motorists on the need to do the right thing while driving, as we are working to minimise road crashes,” he added.

    The chairman appreciated the people of the area for their support towards the activities of the union in the state and called for its sustenance.

    Also speaking, Alhaji Abubakar Kana (APC-Kokona West) state constituency, expressed gratitude to the state leadership of the union for approving a branch of the union in the area.

    He said that he would continue to collaborate with the members of the union in order to boost transportation system in the area and the state at large.

    Earlier, Sadiq, who is the paramount traditional ruler of Agwada chiefdom, urged members of the union to continue to be law abiding and respect constituted authorities in the interest of peace.
