Youths raise alarm as communal conflict brews in Adamawa communities

The youths of Bille, a district in the Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, have raised alarm over a crisis currently brewing between Bille and neighbouring Dong.

The youths who addressed a news briefing in Bille under the auspices of Bille Youths Federation said tension has been high for a while now over certain villages in Bille District that are not formally integrated into the district.

President of the Federation, Comrade Wilfred Jerimond, who presented the text of the briefing, traced the history of the normally to 33 years ago when the law creating the district was enacted.

He said although the Bille Youth Federation has visited and written letters on any different occasions to relevant authorities on the need to fully implement the contents of the laws that created the district and amendments made over the years, including creation of other districts, nothing so far has come from such efforts with particular reference to the status of some villages which the laws indicate should fall within Bille but not officially integrated into it.

Naming the affected villages as Kwana II, Mararraban Bille, Tashan Gurgu, Dingle Kasa, and Kwabba, the Bille Youths Federation president said tension has long become palpable between Bille and neighbouring Dong District over who leads affairs of the villages.

Giving an instance of a recent contentious development, he said some youths of Dong, armed with dangerous objects and wearing black dresses, had last month, on July 7, marched along several villages performing rituals and uttering incantations.

He said the Dong youths carried out the ‘provocative act’ in the name of demarcating the border between Bille and Dong districts, making it necessary for action to be taken by relevant authorities to avoid further provocation and possible violence.

The Bille Youths Federation president called for an order of the Adamawa State House of Assembly for full implementation of the Adamawa State Districts Creation (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Law 2024, as it relates to the Bille District.
