Crisis rocks ADC as Gombe declares self as national chairman

The leadership crisis plaguing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a new twist as the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, declared himself the Interim National Chairman.

Gombe made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, describing the ongoing turmoil as an “unprecedented assault on democracy” allegedly orchestrated by what he called “political hooligans.”

He accused former leaders of the party of neglecting their constitutional duties and ceding control of the ADC to influential outsiders with no genuine ties to the party.

Calling for urgent intervention, Gombe urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to formally recognize the leadership change under his stewardship, stating that doing so would safeguard the integrity of the ADC’s constitution.

Declaring himself, Gombe said, “I, Honourable Nafiu Bala, a bonafide member and a duly elected National Deputy Chairman of our great party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), wishes to draw the attention of the entire members of our great party and Nigerians at large, to the ongoing acts of political hooliganism being perpetrated by some individuals who were hitherto entrusted with the leadership of the party.

“We are all living witnesses to the show of shame and acts of lawlessness being displayed by these unscrupulous leaders, who without any qualm or sense of moral restraint, plunged our party to a needless crisis and leadership uncertainty.

“The idea of mortgaging the future of our great party, by abdicating the constitutional duties and responsibilities of all elected officers of the party, to some powerful outsiders who never belong to the party, is condemnable.

”Recently, the nation woke up only to be greeted by a shoddily rehearsed political melodrama, in which elected roles were switched with certain groups of political strangers in order to facilitate the complete takeover of the party structures and its political appurtenances.

“This total surrender and capitulation is without any known precedent in our democratic journey to constitutional order. We are therefore strongly resolved and collectively determined to challenge this affront and ensure that the party’s laid down rules and stipulated provisions are respected and strictly adhered to by all those who belong to it.

“In case these individuals choose to ignore our urgent calls to obey our constitutional guidelines and thus remain very obdurate and recalcitrant in their aberrant behaviour, we shall proceed with gusto to challenge these gross acts of impunity in the courts and bring them to justice.

“It gives us enormous pain to inundate you with these scandalous happenings in our party, but, we have been left with no other option to take in defence of our inalienable constitutional rights, as evident by the prevailing situation we now find ourselves in the party.

“In the history of democracy all over the world, no party leader or any group of leaders have the power to arbitrarily transfer elected mandate or political authority to non-members and who never belong or contested for political office.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to restoring constitutional order and internal democracy within the ADC, adding that the constitution provides clear guidelines for succession and filling vacant positions.

He added, “The constitution of our great party has made adequate provision as laid down in many clauses, articulating the succession guidelines and how even vacant positions should be constitutionally filled.

“In the circumstance and also in furtherance of my constitutional mandate as the duly elected National Deputy Chairman of our great party, I now assume my constitutional duty and responsibility as the Interim National Chairman of our great party.

“Therefore, I am hereby calling on the esteemed Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to so urgently step in to take due cognisance of this development.”

ADC will not tolerate imposition of candidates, indiscipline, says Mark

Sen. David Mark, the Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) says the party under his watch, will not tolerate candidates’ imposition, anti-party activities and other forms of indiscipline.

Mark made this known in his remarks at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party in Abuja.

The interim chairman  also pledged to serve the party with integrity, transparency, courage, and vision.

He acknowledged the patriotism, sacrifices, and dedication of the outgoing National Chairman, Chief Ralph Nwosu, and his team, who he lauded for building the ADC over the years and for relinquishing party leadership in the interest of the country.

He also commended all party leaders and loyal members who contributed to the party’s growth, assuring them that his leadership would be fair and just.

“I assure you that under my leadership, we shall be committed to full democratic practices and principles that abhor imposition and special privileges. Internal democracy, transparency, and accountability will be our mantra.

“We will guarantee collective leadership at all levels. We will build a technically competent bureaucracy for the party and ensure structured financing. All members will truly own the party.

“We shall revamp our grassroots leadership structures to reflect modern realities. From the polling units, wards up to the national level, every organ will be re-energised,” he said.

Mark also promised inclusion for the youth and women.

”Our policies, nominations, and leadership roles will reflect meaningful inclusion of youths and women and not just tokenism.

“This is why we have reserved 35 per cent of our leadership positions for women. It is also our commitment to have youths below the age of 40 years in our leadership,” he said.

He disclosed that the new National Working Committee (NWC) would, within the shortest possible time, raise committees to review the party’s manifesto and constitution to meet and reflect the aspirations of the Nigerian people.

“We shall clearly articulate what we stand for. Nigerians must know us as a party driven by unblemished ideology, progressive policies, and patriotic governance.

“We will not leave it to the discretion of individual candidates to choose what to do with power,” he affirmed.

Mark announced that in the coming days, the ADC would unveil a 50-member policy committee dedicated to key sectors.

These according to him were, health, education, agriculture, technology, security, economy, and infrastructure, underscoring the party’s focus on achieving good governance for Nigerians.

He urged all Nigerians to join the ADC, promoting it as the only party that guarantees equal opportunity regardless of age, gender, religion, or region.

He also encouraged all ADC members to return to their polling units and begin working at the grassroots, rather than remaining in Abuja.

Earlier in his remarks, Chief Nwosu highlighted the ADC’s significant growth, stating it had transformed from a “small largest party in Nigeria” to a major political force under Mark’s leadership.

Nwosu noted the increasing number of people seeking registration in the ADC nationwide, revealing that the party’s website had crashed three times due to the influx of young people attempting to register online.

He described the adoption of ADC by the national coalition and unveiling Mark led leadership on July 2 as the beginning of a new dawn.

“Within one week, our membership grew from maybe 600 people who were paying membership dues to almost three million who started paying membership dues.

“Some states have told us that we must print a minimum of two million membership cards for them,” he said.

Nwosu urged the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other democratic institutions in Nigeria to be alive to their responsibilities in delivering their mandates.

An ADC Chieftain, Godson Okoye, advised party members to remain hopeful, describing the ADC as a party poised to lead Nigeria towards economic prosperity.

“This journey has just begun, let us encourage ourselves,” Okoye said. (NAN)

    • Mark, Aregbesola take oaths of office

Opposition parties – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) are locked in supremacy battle.

Following a dig at the PDP by the ADC, the former ruling party yesterday fired back at the ADC now taken over by coalition politicians led by Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP accused some ADC members of being ‘’known agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’’ whose goal was to dislodge the ruling party from power in 2027.

It specifically referred to ADC spokesman  Bolaji Abdullahi, whom it described as an APC-indoctrinated individual, as being pivotal to the ADC attacks

Abdullahi  had  told a national television station that the PDP can hardly play an opposition role effectively because it was never designed to function as an opposition party

“PDP wasn’t built to be an opposition party; it was built to govern. So when it found itself in a strange place in 2015, everything began to spiral downward,”  Abdullahi, a former minister said.

But in a statement yesterday by its  National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP described  Abdullahi’s comments as reckless and revealing.

The PDP accused him of acting out a script to try to derail its growing momentum as the nation’s main opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party said   ‘’the APC-indoctrinated Abdullahi ought to give more attention to the ruling party as a former insider than attacking the PDP.

The statement reads:  “The PDP, as the leading opposition party, commanding the respect, loyalty and solidarity of overwhelming majority of Nigerians across the country and which is also the broad-based platform driving the aspiration of Nigerians to oust the APC in 2027 will not descend to join issues with the ADC or any other opposition party in the country for that matter.’’

The PDP said in spite of the defection of some of its members in recent months, it remained firmly rooted across the country with an “organic support base” that no media attacks by  ADC or any other party can undermine.

It said: “Moreover, it is instructive to state that the PDP, as presently constituted, has more than enough presidential personalities with clear records of achievement and capacity to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at any time”

Mark, Aregbesola, Lawal, others take over ADC leadership

Former Senate President David Mark, ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, and General Tunde Ogbeha (rtd) have assumed key leadership roles in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

They became members of the party’s newly inaugurated National Working Committee (NWC) yesterday.

Former Edo State Governor Oserheimen Osunbor is the National Legal Adviser.

On July 1st, the opposition coalition announced the adoption of the ADC as the platform to contest in 2027.

It announced Mark as Interim National Chairman, Aregbesola as Interim National Secretary and Abdullahi as Interim Publicity Secretary.

Nwosu announced his resignation at the event attended by leading opposition figures in the country.

The day after, Nwosu wrote to INEC convening yesterday’s NEC meeting .

Yesterday’s NEC paved the way for the disengagement of Nwosu-led NWC and replacement with the new members.

How the NEC brought in Mark, others

They NEC meeting was held at an Abuja hotel.

At 7:11 pm, Razak Eyiowuawi, South West Zonal Chairman, moved a motion for the resignation of members of Ralph Nwosu-led NWC.

Kabiru Garba, Zamfara State Chairman, seconded it, and the motion was approved in a voice vote.

At 7:25 pm, the former National Organising Secretary, Ibrahim Sulieman, moved the motion for the dissolution of the Nwosu-led NWC in accordance with Article 19(12)(vii) and 19(14)(s) of the ADC 2022 constitution.

It was seconded by Charles Omidiji from Osun State.

The motion was put to a voice vote, and it was carried.

A members of the party said last night that the dissolution of the Nwosu-led NWC and the takeover by the Mark-led team is contrary to the constitution of the party.

According to him: “Article 23, Clause 4 of the ADC Constitution states that If a vacancy arises in any party office, the appropriate Executive Committee shall appoint a replacement from the same zone or constituency as the outgoing office holder.

“This appointment is to remain in effect until a new election is conducted at the next congress or convention.

“Another provision of the party’s constitution is that for anybody to hold an executive office, he must have stayed for two years in the party.”

At 7:52 p.m., the new NWC members took the oath of office and were sworn in by the former National Legal Adviser, Peters Iyiola Oyewole.

The NEC meeting and subsequent event was witnessed  by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

All newly appointed official were present during the brief ceremony.

In his acceptance speech, Mark warned that the new leadership would not tolerate anti-party activities by members.

Noting that structural reforms would be carried out, Mark emphasised building a competent party bureaucracy, sustainable financing mechanisms, and zero tolerance for indiscipline.

“We will build a technically competent bureaucracy for the party and ensure structured financing. All members will truly own the party.

He stressed that the new leadership would be anchored on collective decision-making and full adherence to democratic ideals, adding: “We shall be committed to full democratic practices and principles that abhor imposition and special privileges.

“Internal democracy, transparency, and accountability will be our mantra. We will guarantee collective leadership at all levels.”

“We will open the gates for the next generation. Our policies, nominations, and leadership roles will reflect meaningful inclusion of youths and women and not just tokenism.

Mark commended the Nwosu-led NEC for the job it did for nurturing the party to the level it attained today.

The party also announced that it would field candidates in the 15 constituencies for the forthcoming by-elections.

The new NEC would hold its inaugural meeting today.

More than 500 NEC members from across the country filled the hall in a lively atmosphere.

Before bowing out, Nwosu said: “This is not just a NEC meeting; this is a moment for us to reflect and decide our way forward. It is a rebirth.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, told The Nation that inclusivity is a core focus of the new leadership and would be actively pursued.

Fayose’s deputy Eleka leads defectors to ADC in Ekiti

Ahead of the June 20, 2026 governorship election, prominent members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ekiti State.

Leading the defection were two former deputy governors, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, who served under former governor Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Tae Lawal, who served under former governor Segun Oni.

Also joining the mass exodus were the ex-Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Gboyega Aribisogan; former Secretary to the State Government, Dare Bejide; Mr Akin Omole, ex-commissioner for Information under former governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration, among several former political appointees and executive members from across political parties.

Receiving the defectors in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital yesterday, during the unveiling of the party, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar assured them of fair treatment, noting that all members are equal in ADC.

Atiku boasted that ADC would participate in the 2026 governorship election and emerge victorious, urging Governor Biodun Oyebanji to start preparing his handover note.

The former vice-president represented by Prof. Bayo Fakunle, expressed gratitude to the people of the state for their support for him as presidential candidate in previous elections.

He assured the people that ADC would rescue them from the alleged hardship brought on them by the current government, urging the people to support the party in the rescue mission.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors from PDP, Olusola-Eleka said ADC was formed to chase away those who were destroying the country through maladministration, adding that the calibre of men and women in the party was capable of restoring the country to prosperity.

“Our leaders are of the view that those who are killing the country through maladministration, we should chase them out of power. Our leaders know what to do to better Nigerian economy and the good intention will materialise by God’s grace. Our leaders have chosen the core values of honesty, transparency and accountability; they know what to do to make the lives of Nigerians better.

“This is why we want to work with them. I want to appeal to all of us to let us be united to make real change for a better country. I want to assure you that with the calibre of people behind this coalition, we have hope for a better Nigeria. ADC has come to stay.

“We are unveiling ADC as a platform of the coalition that has come together from different parties to save Nigeria from mis-governance, recklessness and lack of accountability. ADC is not just a political party; it is also a platform for those who are determined to rescue Nigeria. We say no to intimidation, we say no to one party system.”

Ekiti State ADC Chairman, Omolayo Ilesanmi, said the party in Ekiti State was committed to working in harmony with the national leaders of the party, “especially as we gear up for the 2026 governorship election and 2027 general election.

“We believe through unity, discipline and dedication, we can deliver a government that truly serves the people, champion development and promote good governance. African Democratic Congress is a party that welcomes individuals who share our core values of progress, development, discipline, integrity and honesty.

“We are here to replace politics driven by corruption and deceit with transparency and accountability. ADC marks a new beginning for Nigeria, a movement committed to pragmatic solutions, genuine leadership and a future where every citizen can thrive.”

Ilesanmi said people were looking for good governance, which had eluded them, adding: ‘’This is why they are ready to vote for ADC in Ekiti governorship election.

“Whoever emerges as our candidate in the 2026 governorship election will become the governor of Ekiti State. Next time you are interviewing me like this, you will be congratulating me on our victory.”

ADC still in transition, says Nwosu

    • Mark, Aregbesola won’t attend party’s NEC’s meeting

African Democratic Congress (ADC) adopted by the Abubakar Atiku-led coalition of opposition figures, is still in transition, its outgoing National Chairman Ralph Nwosu said yesterday.

According to him, his stepping aside for former Senate President David Mark as national chairman is still being fine-tuned to avoid legal challenge.

He added that tomorrow’s National Executive Committee (NEC) will take  steps to solidify the transition of coalition members into the party’s  executive positions.

Nwosu, who announced his exit during the public adoption of the party by coalition members on July 6 in Abuja, will preside over tomorrow’s meeting, which will be attended by the old members.

Nwosu sent a letter inviting INEC to attend the meeting, the letter he signed the day after his public announcement that he had stepped down for Mark.

Although, the adoption of the party by the coalition figures is being challenged by some of the party’s state chairmen, Nwosu said what is going on in the party is not unusual in politics.

He said: “We are transitioning and it is a continuous process. We have our own style. After all, the ruling party recently made their Chairman resign and they transitioned to another chairman.

“So, there is nothing new to what we are doing. Now that we announced our coalition, the APC made their move leading to a new Chairman, and if I recollect, they have changed the leadership like three times now.

“What this means is that party exco is a continuous process, so, our own should not  become a problem for anyone to the point of chasing us around.

“So, it is something that we are doing, but we are doing it in our own style”.

Nwosu added that the party is operating with strategic caution in light of the ruling party’s actions.

“We are just being strategic. Each step we take, it is deliberate, we design our own strategy to deal with their anti-democratic tendencies, either as a party or as members of the coalition, is strategic.

“We have scripted our plan to be able to start the construction process on a sound footing”

On reports regarding former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, and former Governors Nasir El-Rufai and Peter Obi being part of the ADC coalition but not making formal declarations, Nwosu said: “They are not afraid. The day the party became the coalition party, they all came there. So, there is no contradiction. There is always a transitional process which may be different from one party to the other depending on the direction they choose to take”.

A  party official explained that the transition from Nwosu-led Exco to that led by David Mark will be discussed at the NEC meeting and “proper procedure will be followed”.

On  former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, the official explained that the delay in his open declaration stems from complications involving members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) who are aligned with his political structure.

“What is stopping former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was the period to sort out the issue of the members of the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) by-elections that have already begun the participation process for the next federal and state elections.

“They’ve gone far already and it’s impossible for them to dump SDP midway and go ahead to pick the nomination form for ADC at the same time.

“That’s exactly what’s refraining El-Rufai’s public declaration, but once that is sorted out, he is coming on board with his structure,” the insider said.

On Labour Party’s former presidential candidate Peter Obi, similar political considerations are in play, according to the official.

“The situation is what Peter Obi is also facing. Some of his members have gone far into the election process, like in Anambra,” the official noted.

“These are democrats who are aware of the rule of law, so they are all aware of the implications of open declaration at this stage.

“At the appropriate time, all of these will come into the open,” the official stressed.

ADC, presidential aide clash over govt’s loans

The Presidency has lambasted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the party’s call for an investigation into the borrowings by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The opposition party had described the borrowings as “fiscal vandalism”. It warned that Nigeria’s public debt could hit N200 trillion by year-end.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC criticised the recent approval of a fresh $21 billion foreign loan, accusing the Tinubu administration of borrowing at levels far worse than that of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“Under Buhari, Nigeria borrowed N4.7 trillion yearly. Tinubu is borrowing N49.8 trillion per year. That’s more in two years than Buhari did in his first four,” the party said.

But in a swift response, a senior presidential aide dismissed the criticism, saying: “He (Abdullahi) is talking rubbish. DMO (the Debt Management Office) has explained and provided clarity over and over.

“They (ADC chieftains) are just looking for attention.”

The party argued that the debt, though smaller in dollar terms, has become more burdensome due to what the party called naira’s free fall.

“At the current exchange rate, foreign borrowing is costing the country over N25 trillion annually,” it said.

The party blamed the National Assembly for failing to provide checks, accusing the lawmakers of approving loans without demanding transparency or long-term sustainability.

Quoting figures from the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, the ADC warned that debt servicing now gulps over 60 per cent of national income, squeezing small businesses, reducing credit access, and worsening tax pressure on citizens.

The party demanded a full public audit of all loans secured over the past decade, including terms, recipients, and repayment structures.

It urged the Tinubu government to reverse its debt-dependent fiscal strategy.

But the presidential aide dismissed the ADC’s concerns outright, insisting that the DMO had clarified the issues the ADC raised.

Ahead of the June 20, 2026, governorship election in Ekiti State, key political heavyweights from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party (LP) have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Leading the wave of defections are two former deputy governors—Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, who served under ex-Governor Ayodele Fayose, and Dr. Tae Lawal, who served under ex-Governor Segun Oni.

Several other former political appointees and party executives from across the major parties also joined the ADC.

The decampees were formally received on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti during the official unveiling of the ADC in the state. Representing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the event, Prof. Bayo Fakunle assured the defectors of equal treatment within the party, stating that all members would have a voice.

Atiku, in his message, vowed that the ADC would contest and win the 2026 governorship election. He urged Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji to begin preparing his handover notes, assuring Ekiti people of better governance under the ADC.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors from the PDP, Prof. Olusola-Eleka said the ADC was established to rescue Nigeria from the grip of failed leadership. He expressed confidence in the calibre of the party’s members, noting they are well-equipped to restore prosperity and good governance.

Wike to Nigerians: reject ADC coalition

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja,  Nyesom Wike, has advised  Nigerians to reject the coalition and its platform,  the African Democratic Congress (ADC) describing its new leaders  as naysayers and unpatriotic.

Wike said the coalition was only interested   in grabbing power from President Bola Tinubu despite all of them having  no records of achievement in the various past positions.

He said Tinubu on assumption of office took some painful but necessary decisions that would eventually turn around the country for good insisting that some inroads had been made.

Wike spoke at the University of Port Harcourt’s  35th Combined Convocation and 50th Anniversary shortly after the institution decorated him with Honorary Doctor of Science Degree in Political Science.

To further honour the minister, the university named its Convocation Arena, which was built by Wike in 2024 after him.

The arena was officially inaugurated by the Rivers Sole Administrator, Ibok Ibas as part of activities of the university’s 35th Combined Convocation and 50th Anniversary.

The university also conferred on the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri an honorary doctoral degree

The minister observed  that members of the coalition were preoccupied with peddling lies and hate against Tinubu and his government.

But he said some of the policies of the administration had started yielding fruits citing the steady drop in the price of fuel and others.

Wike said: Through his Renewed Hope Agenda, he has with the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund among other remarkable initiatives starting the dramatic transformation of tertiary education landscape in such a way that soon no willing child will be denied access to qualify education because of economic hardship.

” Our country is undoubtedly on the path of positive ascendency and very soon the impact will be visible even to the blind and obvious even to the cynically minded.”

Addressing the coalition, he said:  “We must resist the purveyors of lies, hate and division who seek to destroy our country.

“These men and women who coalesce under the banner of so called Coalition and propelling a division of grandeur and perpetual fight for relevance and political power, if you interrogate their profiles, you will find that they have been in office for almost all their lives. Yet they have nothing concrete to show of their achievements in building an enduring nation

” In only two years of this administration they are congregating to destroy rather than build and rather than reconstruct  our hitherto battered country for which most of them have been active dramatis personae in the willful destruction of our politics and economy which they painfully orchestrated in their respective tenure in office.

“We know these naysayers and you are enjoined to reject them and their unpatriotic drum beats of division and failed propaganda.”

The FCT minister said his support for the University of Port Harcourt both as governor and a minister, was borne out of the positive influence the federal institution had on him as an alumnus.

Wike said: “It is in the light of the foregoing that I have always strongly believed that every alumnus should give back to the university as a mark of pure gratitude.

“This also explains why I freely give to this institution whenever I have had the opportunity to so do.”

Wike recalled that throughout his duty tours, he had always referred to himself  as a happy alumnus of the UNIPORT insisting that all his positive gestures were a deliberate pursuit of commitment to gratitude for a university he said gave him a lot.

He said: “To this extent, you would recall that even though this university was established in 1975 as a conventional university, there was no Law faculty in this university.

“So when I became a Minister of State for Education, I saw it as an opportunity that we must have a faculty of Law.

“I’m glad that the Vice-Chancellor said it here that today, we have a Faculty of Law. I did not only end at that; I said there must be a befitting faculty of Law building, and I insisted, and today, we have that Faculty of Law,” the former Rivers State governor stated.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, recalled that the first convocation of the university in 1982, was held in the old arena.

He said: “We are proud today, to celebrate the 35th convocation in our 50th year of existence in this fantastic edifice, built two years ago by Rivers government during Wike’s administration,” he said.

In his remarks,  Ibas lauded the contribution of Wike to the development of the institution saying that the conception and construction of the arena under Wike’s stewardship, reflected his enduring legacy in infrastructural and educational development.

He said: “The ultra-modern convocation arena, now proudly inaugurated, is a testament to what is possible when vision is aligned with commitment. Your Excellency, we honour your foresight.

“This arena, both in design and purpose, is not only a venue for convocation, it is also a sanctuary where dreams are validated; where academic journeys culminate in triumphs; and where future leaders will be publicly honoured.

“It will involve policy dialogues, innovation exhibitions and ceremonies that shaped the character and capacities of generations to come,” he said.

Ibas said that the edifice was symbolic, adding that it represented continuity and a bridge between legacy of excellence and the promise of tomorrow.

2027: ADC raises committee on membership registration in Edo

Stakeholders in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo state have set up a committee for membership registration and membership revalidation in the state.

The Committee is to work with the party’s state coalition in the state to ensure a rancour free process.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Chief Oyegun said the stakeholders meeting was to, among other things, receive groups from the Social Democratic Party.

Oyegun explained that the membership registration and revalidation was to ensure the message of the coalition gets to every corner of this state in cooperation with the incumbent executive.

According to him, “I think the message has gotten home very largely. The entire state will convulse at the mentioning of the ADC.

“One of the Committee will work with the state working Committee in a way that is effective and convenient to the ordinary citizen of Edo State.

“The story of success in life does not matter how much you fall. You heard the apology made by Prof. Osunbor. We accept our failings. We removed a clueless government and I don’t have a word for what we replaced it with. We are back to the struggle. We know what we are doing and it will not fail.”

ADC hijacked by opportunists seeking personal gains — Rep Abejide

The highest elected official of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and member representing Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopa Moro Federal Constituency of Kogi State, Hon. Leke Abejide, has raised the alarm that the party has been hijacked by individuals with selfish motives.

Speaking during a televised interview monitored in Abuja, Abejide alleged that many of those joining the ADC are doing so not out of genuine commitment but for personal gain.

According to him, their actions and body language suggest they have no real interest in the party’s vision.

He maintained that former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola cannot claim leadership of the party unless proper structures are put in place.

Abejide pointed out that the ADC’s constitution does not permit newcomers to assume leadership positions unless granted a waiver by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). He, however, stated that no such NEC meeting has been held to consider any waiver.

“Chief Ralph Nwosu remains the authentic National Chairman of the ADC,” he declared.

Lamenting the situation in his home state, Abejide said, “Even in my state, a PDP member is now claiming to be the leader of ADC, while I, the only elected official who has been with the party from the start, is still here.”

He added, “A few years ago, if you mentioned ADC, people didn’t even know what it meant. Now, some people have rushed in with the intent to hijack it. But when someone enters a house to steal, they are often caught and thrown out. That’s exactly what I believe will soon happen.”

“I don’t support the suit in court, but let us continue to watch. The tenure of Nwosu has not expired. I have been at this party since 2018. We met him as the National Chairman. He founded the party from the beginning, and everything was going on smoothly until they went for the national Convention in 2022 to elect a presidential candidate.

“When they came back, there was the issue of somebody bribing and taking the ticket. According to them, the ticket should have gone to Kingsley Mughalu, and some people felt that the ticket was given to the wrong person as a result of financial inducement.

“At the end of the day, the expectations of the party officials were not met, and they started fighting. It was when the fight broke out that they called for a new national chairman. When it became so tough, they went for another convention with INEC in attendance, and he was reelected along with his Exco members, and INEC has that record.

“The takeover of the party with Senator David Mark as Acting Chairman is not in order. They are supposed to call an NEC meeting. I am a member of NEC, and nobody is higher than me. They are supposed to sit down with us and discuss how to hold a convention where they will resign legally.

“The party Constitution says a new member of the party cannot hold any position, but you can get a waiver. We should have held an NEC meeting where it would have been discussed whether to give them a waiver. But there was no NEC meeting. What they did was done without following the law, which means they are building something on nothing, and that can collapse any day.

“As far as I am concerned, Chief Ralph Nwosu is still the National Chairman and all his officials, and I don’t think INEC recognises any other person. All that they are doing is just in the air because they have not done the proper thing.

“If they wanted to do the proper thing, they should have called for NEC so that people like us could be there and say whether we accept or not. If they give a ticket to anybody as it stands now, and the person wins the election, you just help your opponent to get into office.

“For now, I stand on the solid rock of the former structure. Ralph Nwosu gave me a ticket to contest, and I won the election twice. I don’t recognise any interim, and that is why I have not attended any of their meetings, and I will not.

“The people coming into this party destroyed what they were before. They are not new people, but have been around for years. How did they manage where they are coming from? They are coming to destroy this party, and you will see what will be the end.

“Before now, not much was heard of the ADC, but we had peace and were moving well. In 2019, three of us were elected into the House of Reps, but others defected. In this Assembly, two of us came to the House, but one has defected.

“I am happy that my party is gaining momentum across the country, but let us do it the right way. We should call an NEC meeting to discuss how to restructure the party. Whoever wants to come in should do it the right way and not seek to join the party through the back door, get whatever you want, then dump it and go away.

“The body language of those coming into the party is not to come and stay, but to use it as a vehicle to fight the President.

“If we come to NEC, I will be fair to them if they will listen to me. We can form this coalition in support of the President.”

On the suit filed by some members of the party, he said, “Those who are in court know why they are in court. For me I believe that those who came to ADC came for a purpose. It is not that they love the party genuinely, but looking for a platform to achieve their aims and objectives, and I think it might be tough for them.

“Already, people are in court, and many other cases are still coming up. The way things are being done now, when you come and hijack structures, it is not everybody who will just give up the structures like that. I have not seen any new development yet, but I am still watching.”
