God warned my firstborn would die if I left RCCG — Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said God warned him of grave consequences—specifically the death of his firstborn—if he ever left the RCCG.

Speaking during the June Holy Ghost Service in the early hours of Saturday, at the Redemption City of God in Ogun State, Adeboye shared the revelation while preaching on the theme, “Destined for Greatness (Part 2).”

Highlighting the importance of divine direction and spiritual consistency, Adeboye referenced a sermon by his son, Pastor Leke Adeboye, and lamented the trend of young Christians frequently moving between churches.

“When I got born again, there were three major ministries that were making waves, and they were very good. There were different temptations to go from one to another,” he recalled.

“But God said to me, ‘Son, I brought you here. This is where you will stay. The day you leave this denomination, your firstborn will die.’”

Adeboye recounted how RCCG was relatively obscure at the time, with a modest headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

Despite being a university lecturer, he said God instructed him to submit to a spiritual leader who lacked formal education.

“I was a lecturer at the university. My father in the Lord didn’t go to secondary school, not even primary. But God said this is where you will stay.”

He encouraged youths to seek divine guidance and remain rooted in the place God has ordained for them.

“Discover where God wants you to stay, and stay there,” he advised.

Adeboye clarified that his remarks were not intended to elevate RCCG above other churches.

“I am not saying we are better than any other denomination,” he added.

    Adeboye tasks students on diligence

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has urged young people to remain focused, hardworking, diligent and prayerful, describing these virtues as essential ingredients for achieving greatness in life.

Speaking during the RCCG’s monthly thanksgiving service at The Throne of Grace headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Adeboye, in a sermon titled “Exceedingly Great,” offered prayers for students across all levels—ranging from secondary school pupils to higher institution students, including candidates for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams, and those seeking admission locally and abroad.

He emphasised that to attain greatness, especially the kind described as “exceedingly great. young people must stay focused, work hard, maintain diligence, and remain prayerful.

“In God’s plan, there is no impossibility, especially when you belong to Him by surrendering your life to Jesus. Once you’ve done that, your destiny is to be exceedingly great,” Adeboye said.

However, he cautioned that meeting the spiritual requirement is just the beginning. “You can’t afford to relax after that. Keep working hard and stay prayerful. Slacking off leads to disappointment and frustration because, even in heaven, there’s no room for laziness.”

Highlighting the importance of having a clear vision early in life, Adeboye noted that while greatness has no age limit, it is best pursued with purpose and direction from youth. He illustrated his point with the biblical story of Jacob, who became exceedingly great by being focused, diligent, hardworking, and prayerful.

Adeboye also reminded students that no level of spirituality can substitute for academic preparation. “You must study hard; knowing God alone won’t help you pass your exams without effort,” he said.

Adding to the message, Pastor Dele Balogun, Special Assistant to the General Overseer (Admin) and Pastor in charge of Region One, encouraged the youths to put Adeboye’s advice into practice, reaffirming that diligence and focus are keys to becoming exceedingly great.

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has revealed that he turned down a prayer for him to live up to 120 years.

During a recent sermon, Adeboye recounted how his followers had prayed for him to reach various milestones.

While he accepted prayers to live up to 80 and 90, he remained silent when they prayed for him to reach 100.

However, when a congregant prayed for him to live to 120, he jokingly dismissed it, exclaiming, “Na lie!”

He questioned what wrongdoing would warrant another 50 years on earth, especially given the challenges of daily life in Nigeria.

His rejection continued when another worshipper prayed for him to live to 140, to which he firmly responded, “No be me.”

He said: “When I was 70 years old, some children of mine began to pray for me. And they said, ‘Daddy, you will live to be 80,’ I said Amen. ‘You will live to be 90,’ I said Amen. They said, ‘You will live to be 100,’ I didn’t answer them.

“And then one fellow got excited and said, ‘You will live to be 120,’ I said na lie! What will God say I have done wrong? I have been here for 70 years, He will now keep me here for another 50 years? In this world?

“Where today you have electricity, tomorrow you don’t have? But there was one lady who got really excited, and said, ‘You will live to be 140,’ I said no be me.”
