    Demonstrators disagree on inclusion of Adeleke’s name on placards

    Protesters yesterday disagreed on the inclusion of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name on the placards against Endbadgovernance demonstration in Osogbo.

    The protesters yesterday converged on Freedom Park, Osogbo for a demonstration. However, the leadership of the demonstrators, numbering about five, disagreed when writing inscriptions on the placards of Endbadgovernance protest.

    Some persons opposed including the governor’s name on the placards to be used for the protest.

    Later when the protesters marched on Ola-Iya junction, Osogbo, they chanted anti-government songs. However, when one of the leaders included the name of Governor Adeleke again, others kicked against it, as they collected the microphone from him.

    They later marched on the House of Assembly for further demonstration.

    NAPTIP urges Adeleke to inaugurate taskforce to tackle human trafficking

    The leadership of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons(NAPTIP) has urged the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to inaugurate taskforce to tackle human trafficking. 

    Marking the International Day against human trafficking, the Osun State Coordinator of NAPTIP, Chinedu Ajaegbu, also urged Nigerians to be wary of traffickers using work visa as a bait of traveling out of the country. 

    The officials of NAPTIP and other stakeholders had engaged in solidarity work from Ayetoro area, Osogbo and walk through Igbonna, Olonkoro, Old Garage to Freedom Park to campaign against human trafficking.  

    Similarly, the coordinator, Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse, and Labour (NACTAL), Osun State, Ejalonibu Ezekiel, said the trend in human trafficking is worrisome in the state, saying that drastic steps must be taken to combat the problem.

    “Osun is a breeding ground for child trafficking, especially forced child labour, trafficking girls. Osun State is yet to have a taskforce against human trafficking among the southwest states. 

    “Osun and Ondo States, in a recent study emerges the highest receivers of trafficked farm workers from Cross River State. Also, in the State, Ejigbo local government is also reported to be one of the exporter of children to Ivory Coast apart from cases of using under age as housemaids across the state.”

    Protest: Adeleke invites organisers, security operatives for dialogue

    Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has scheduled a comprehensive dialogue for Monday, July 29, with the organisers of the upcoming national protests, as well as stakeholders from the security and civil society sectors.

    According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke has directed his team to reach out to representatives from various civil society groups and student bodies for a discussion on the current state of the economy.

    He said: “I have instructed my team to organise a dialogue session on Monday where stakeholders can jaw-jaw as part of peacemaking in the exercise of constitutional rights. The session will allow parties to list grievances and what they expect the government at all levels to do.

    “We will convey outcomes of the session to government leaders from myself to Mr President in Abuja. It will also be an opportunity to tell stakeholders what we are doing as a government to resolve the economic hardship facing our people.”

    Adeleke reaffirmed his firm belief in the national constitution and the rights and liberties enshrined in it, saying, “There is a need for peace and non-violent actions among which are dialogue sessions slated for Monday.

    “We have to sustain the peace even as we make our feelings about the state of the nation known to the leadership. We will listen and we will act in the best interest of the citizenry.”

    He submitted that “Amid positive transformation ongoing in our dear state, we cannot afford any criminal hijacking of liberty processions. That is why the Monday dialogue promises to achieve a lot.”

    Adeleke advocates devolution of power to address Nigeria’s challenges

    The governor of Osun state, Ademola Adeleke, has said that devolution of power is the solution to address economic hardship, unemployment, hyperinflation, and other challenges facing Nigeria.

    Speaking at Adeleke University during the 10th undergraduate and 6th postgraduate convocation ceremony held at the institution’s stadium on Sunday, July 21, Adeleke expressed concern that graduates are entering the job market during a difficult economic period in Nigeria.

    He, however, encouraged them to view this challenging period as an opportunity to utilize their entrepreneurial skills to offer solutions to these challenges.

    He said: “At the National Economic Council meetings, both the federal and the state governments regularly brainstorm on finding solutions to the economic hardship, unemployment, and hyperinflation facing the nations.

    “Several options are being experimented on. For us as a state, we believe the solution lies in the devolution of powers and financing to the state governments. There is an urgent need to move many items on the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list.

    “The states are better positioned to handle many items for which the centre is presently responsible. So the solution is more devolution rather than more centralisation of governance powers and responsibilities.”

    He added: “We must as a nation focus on economic federalism. This will deepen subnational prosperity and create an enabling environment for job creation and boost local capacity across the sectors.”

    Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Solomon Adebola disclosed that the institution graduated 1,092 students consisting of 976 undergraduate and 116 Postgraduate. 115 bagged First-class Honours.

    Adeleke commissions CSDA’s micro project in Iwo

    Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has commissioned newly built and fully furnished health centers at Oluode community in Iwo.

    The projects were initiated by people of the community and funded by Osun State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) under “Osun Cares”.

    The General Manager of Osun-CSDP, Mrs Aderomke Oluwafunmilayo Abokede said the prompt release of funds by Governor Adeleke made it possible to complete the project.

    Aboke said: “The approach we are using is demand-driven. The communities requested for the maternity center and the facility is going to care for general sicknesses as well. It serves 42 compounds. So, it’s going to reach a lot of people. The project is an inclusive development in which the very poor ones are not excluded.”

    Adeleke in his remarks appealed to residents of Iwo to maintain the projects and assured the people of Osun State of more dividends of democracy.

    Adeleke said: “I charge the beneficiaries of this project to ensure regular and adequate maintenance and sustainability of the projects. I must especially appreciate the good work that Osun CSDA is doing in ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach the nooks and crannies of the State. I assure the Agency of the continuous support of the State Government.

    Osun state governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Friday, July 19, promised to implement the payment of the approved N70,000 minimum wage to civil servants.

    Adeleke, through his commissioner for information and public enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi told The Nation that the workers’ welfare tops the agenda of Adeleke’s government.

    He said: “Our governor is a lover of workers; his first agenda is to prioritise the welfare of workers both active and non-active.

    “Governor Ademola Adeleke will not be among the defaulters of the new minimum wage. Osun state will never deviate from the law on minimum wage. Governor Ademola Adeleke will key into it.”

    Osun State governor Ademola Adeleke has been billed to attend the premiere of Adeola Agoro’s debut flick, ‘Okikiola The Fisherman.’

    The premiere has been set for August 2, 2024 and according to Agoro, Governor Adeleke, is being honoured with the premiere of the movie for his support during the challenging stages of post-production.

    “When his attention was drawn to this this culturally and sensibly significant movie, Okikiola The Fisherman, Gov. Adeleke came on as a champion of the arts and culture and the movie industry by supporting it.

    “As a way of thanking him and the Government of Osun State for the way they have contributed to the Osun State culture and tourism, cultural heritage preservation by supporting Okikiola the Fisherman, I decided to honour him at the premiere of the movie”, Adeola Agoro said.

    The journalist turned movie producer highted the involvement of the governor in promoting the entertainment industry in Osun State with the ambition to drive the economy through the entertainment industry through job creation in the sector.

    Okikiola The Fisherman is the story of love, greed, resilience, misleading, and  danger inherent in taking the wrong decisions.

    Okikiola, (Baaj Adebule) the star fisherman of the community, has one aspiration – to marry Dunni, the very beautiful daughter of the struggling parents of his community and he does all within his power to show how ready he is to take care of her.

    By a twist of fate, the Yeye Osun of the community of the community(Jumoke George)  has to quickly find a wife for her George son, Daisi (Bolanle Ninalowo), a slent war between the fisherman and the custodian of the river might either devour or open a new vista of hope for some of the characters.

    The film features Kunle Afolayan, Bolanle Ninalowo (Nino), Faithia Balogun, Baaj Adebule, Jumoke George, Don Richard, Baba Olaiya, Segun Ogungbe and many others.

    Food hike: Adeleke, lawmaker advocate agric loans for fresh graduates, youths

    Osun state governor, Ademola Adeleke and a lawmaker representing Obokun state constituency, Adewumi Adeyemi have advocated for massive participation of youths and fresh graduates in agricultural sector. 

    The lawmaker also urged government at all levels to provide student loan to willing fresh graduates and youth to tackle issue of unemployment and food inflation. 

    The duo spoke during a programme tagged ProjectYouthSpark organised by School of Politics, Policy and Governance in Osogbo, Osun State, where over 200 youths were selected to participate. 

    Adeleke, in his address, noted that his administration has taken many strategic steps to tackle unemployment in the state, highlighting job fairs, agro-industrial activities, vocational trainings among others steps taken to abate the challenge.

    In his speech, the lawmaker said: “Like student loan, federal government should give youths and graduates Agric loans to those who are willing. Federal government should give this loans to youth who have shown capacity in this area.Agric is a way to grow, no matter the development of Artificial Intelligence(AI), everybody will still need to eat.”

    The team lead for the ProjectYouthSpark, Olufemi Olaosun explained: “The project is designed to equip and empower young people in Osun State. For the few weeks we are going to train 200 youths on job hunting and we are going to give some of them grant for business.”

    Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, among others have eulogised the late Olojudo of Ido-Osun, Aderemi Adedapo.

     Oba Adedapo died at the age of 72 years in Ile-Ife on May 23. He will be buried this month.

    At a service for Adedapo at De Distinguished Multipurpose Hall, Ido Osun, dignitaries paid their last respect for the monarch.

     Adeleke, represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, extolled the monarch and called for a peaceful selection of his successor.

    Ogunwusi, represented by Alawo of Awo, Oba Adegboye Abdulrasaq, said the monarch would be missed for his contribution in the community.

    Sultan of Sokoto sent his condolence message to the government and Council of Obas.

    Student loan: Why we must avoid debt traps, Adeleke

    Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun has urged the management of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to avoid debt traps for students in the operation of the scheme.

    Adeleke said this when the NELFUND management, led by its Managing Director, Mr Akintunde Sawyer, paid a courtesy visit to his office, on Tuesday, in Osogbo.

    The governor said that the management of the loans board should take a cue from other countries operating it to avoid a pitfall.

    “I must, however, call our attention to a lesson we must learn as a nation from the operation of the loans board.

    “As a long term resident of the United States, I am aware of the challenge of student loans’ debt.

    “It has become a crisis of sorts. It has also become a subject of hot political debate.

    “It has to do with huge student loan debt in the United States.

    “We must as a nation avoid a similar debt trap.

    “As we have the grace to understudy other nations operating similar loan fund, we must avoid the pitfalls,” the governor said.

    He said that the management of the board must integrate mechanisms to prevent similar experiences like what is happening in the United States.

    Adeleke,commended President Bola Tinubu  for demonstrating political will in tracking not only the establishment of the fund, but also its effective take off.

    The governor, who noted that NELFUND was a veritable platform to provide a lifeline for many indigents students, said the scheme promises to remove the pain and hardship experienced by many brilliant students.

    He said it was a thing of joy for him that the state took the lead among other states in selection and compliance process of the loan.

    Earlier in his remarks, Akintunde said the loan fund was aimed at bridging the gap among those willing to go to tertiary institutions but without any means of doing so.

    He said that NELFUND had been tasked with the responsibility of identifying  indigent students and provide them with loans to further their education.

    Akintunde disclosed that Osun had the highest number of applicants for the loans fund.

    The NELFUND boss, who noted that the loan was interest free, said that students would repay the loan immediately they secured a job after their one year  National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
