  • Fidelity SME Forum advises entrepreneurs

Passion has been identified as a key critical success factor for aspiring business people. Lady Kehinde Kamson, founder of Sweet Sensation made the disclosure while sharing her success secret in a highly competitive industry on the Fidelity SME Forum, a weekly radio programme organised by Fidelity Bank Plc as a deliberate attempt to resuscitate the Small and Medium – scale Enterprises (SMEs) and create a new generation of entrepreneurs with the “I can do” spirit in Nigeria.

Kamson said that she had always had the passion for cooking, baking and food service generally. “I like to try out recipes and I had a mother who taught me same and she was a good example. So, the business had to be food because that was what I had a passion for and that’s another point I would like to share with aspiring business people. It’s good to look out for money, but it’s also good to satisfy your passion.”

On why it took long to open an outlet of Sweet Sensation, she said that every good thing has to start with some degree of experience, stressing that one must necessarily struggle because if one does not struggle, then he or she can’t understand the business effectively and success may be short lived. “There is a learning process that you cannot compromise and it comes with every territory and if you then patiently struggle through the process, then you will come out victorious.”

Kamson maintained that there is no right time to go into business rather it depends on the type of maturity the business choice requires. Some business, she says, may require extreme maturity which one cannot really cope with except they are able to learn from a skill acquisition centre. “Businesses require different skills and temperament. While one is young, it’s true that making children comes in the way in the case of mothers, but with determination, you can truly succeed,” she added.

  • NBA advises Reps against flouting order on leadership change

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) yesterday urged the House of Representatives not to flout the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, restraining it from changing its leadership.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola, on Monday, restrained parties in a suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the House from taking steps that could affect the res in the case.

He ordered them to maintain status quo pending the determination of the suit.

The NBA, in a statement yesterday, said the order remained valid and must be obeyed by all until it is set aside.

It hailed the leadership of both chambers of the National Assembly for exhibiting a good sense of purpose and responsibility in their welcome addresses to their members.

The association urged the legislators to focus on their core responsibility of law-making and dwell less on politicking.

It hailed the House leadership on the manner it dealt with the crisis.

The NBA said: “We are concerned about the language of some honourable members of the House of Representatives at a press conference that followed later in the day, with a member of the Bar threatening that the order of court would be obeyed up and until the next court date in February when, according to him, the court must determine the whole matter. We have found this rather very impudent.

“We are alarmed at such a statement from a member of the Bar to a court. We want to believe that that was a slip that would never be repeated, because the NBA will not hesitate to take disciplinary actions against its members, in or out of government, whose actions or utterances are considered disrespectful to a court of law.

“The Bar must, at all times, protect the integrity and dignity of the courts. Whoever is dissatisfied with a court order, has a responsible option of bringing another application to have the order under reference set aside by the same court or go to the Court of Appeal.

“Politics must give way to the serious business of law making in the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly, which is a matter of responsibility, the legislature being the hallmark of any democracy.

“We particularly commend the maturity and dexterity exhibited by our professional colleague, the honourable speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Waziri Aminu Tambuwal, in dousing the unnecessary disorder caused by what the Rt. Honourable speaker stainly referred to, as an expensive New Year joke, and an attempt in surreptitiously disregarding a valid and subsisting order of court, that status quo be maintained with regards to the leadership positions of the House of Representatives, pending the hearing and determination of the pending motion on notice.”

  • Quit politics now, Tsava advises Tukur

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has been told to quit politics by a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police Abubakar Tsav.

Tsav said Tukur should devote the rest of his life “to philanthropy”.

Tsav, in a text message to The Nation, said Tukur by all standards is a fulfilled man.

He listed some of Tukur’s achievements as: a former governor of the old Gongola State; administrator of the sea ports, and acclaimed businessman, with connections both in Nigeria and beyond.

He said: “The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur ,was once the governor of the old Gongola State after serving as general manager, NPA. He holds a traditional title from Adamawa. He ‘chairmans’, International Business Organisation, a successful businessman and well connected.

“By world standards, he is rich and should be a comfortable man. By age, he is ripe for retirement from active politics, if he cherishes his name and integrity. It is time for him to quit politics and devote the rest of his life to philanthropy.”

Tsav said people involuntarily invite tribulations to themselves by giving into greed and selfishness.

“What else does Alhaji Tukur want in life? Mr Nelson Mandela fought apartheid headlong and was arrested and jailed for 27 years. On his release, he was elected president of RSA (Republic of South Africa). He offered to serve for just one term. Today, the world holds him in high esteem. Greed and selfishness invite tribulations.”

  • ACN chieftain advises Accord against reckless statements

A chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Oyo State, Alhaji Abass Oloko, has advised the leader of the Accord and former Governor Rashidi Ladoja to call the party’s Media Director, Prince Dotun Oyelade, to order. He accused Oyelade of making reckless reactions to the development in the state.

Reacting to the statements and an article written by Prince Oyelade and published in Daily Sun, Oloko said it was unfortunate that such an article could be written by a “collaborator-in-corruption” during the Adebayo Alao-Akala administration.

He said rather than hail the Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration for its many “firsts”, the Accord has been saying the same thing all the time.

Oloko added that the statements had been laced with lies and only an uninformed person would see meanings in them.

According to him, the Accord is just playing politics, adding that Senator Ladoja, as an engineer, ought to know that erecting a barrier at the foot of a flyover does not indicate weakness.

He alleged that he neither studied civil engineering nor a building- related course.

The ACN chieftain went on: “Common sense tells me that such barriers need to be erected at the foot of the new bridge to discourage articulated vehicles, considering the damage they’ve done to our roads.”

He said he wondered why Ladoja did not build a bridge when he knew the cost, adding: “Honesty, if he has done these things, we wouldn’t have been lauding Governor Ajimobi for these small things.

“Or is Senator Ladoja criticising Governor Ajimobi because he sent his people packing from the Ajumose government? There is no way you can blame a government you are part of and not get the red card! Yes, I would have done the same thing for you if I were Ajimobi. Or have you forgotten that you reneged on the agreement you signed with your godfather, the late Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, in 2003 and that was the genesis of thuggery and insecurity in our politics in the Fourth Republic.”

On the cost difference between the Abeokuta and the Ibadan bridges, he said the former governor should know that cost might be less, considering the closeness to raw materials in Abeokuta, a rocky town. He added that any visitor to the Ibadan bridge would see its several ancillary facilities, which were not in the Abeokuta bridge; the old water pipelines, which were replaced with a-500mm water mains of steel pipes of about 2km, coupled with the 1.2 kilometre road network rehabilitated beside the Ibadan bridge. These are in addition to the cost of relocation of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) electrical and telecommunications facilities and the cost of compensation for demolished buildings and beautification around the flyover.

“Senator Ladoja should hire a good image-maker to speak for him to redeem his image,” Oloko said.

  • Avoid sensational news, Obi advises journalists

Anambra State Governor Peter Obi yesterday praised journalists for working to ensure that Nigerians keep abreast of the news, often at great risk to their lives.

The governor spoke yesterday at the mass to commemorate the World Communication Day at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, yesterday.

He, however, frowned at sensationalisation of news. He called on reporters to engage more in investigative journalism and writings that would edify the society.

“Every profession is for the greater glory of God and should be used to advance civilisation,” Obi said.

He advised journalists to use information substitution strategy and focus more on the greatness of the country, rather than on the bad news.

Bishop Callistus Onaga called on journalists and all those engaged in managing communication to be circumspect in what they do.

He condemned the use of the media to propagate immorality and falsehood rather than the promotion of sound and godly values.

The Director of Communication at the Enugu State Catholic Diocese, Fr. Joseph Offor, reminded practitioners that the nobility of the profession lies in the propagation of truth.

  • Braithwaite advises National Assembly on constitution amendment

Braithwaite advises National Assembly on constitution amendment

Elder statesman and legal luminary, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, at the weekend urged the National Assembly to stop the ongoing constitution amendment, because it will not address the current imbalance, inequality, injustice and many other problems in the country.

Rather, he said the Federal Government should set the machinery in motion by calling for a Sovereign National Conference (SNC) to fashion out a new constitution that would meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

According to him, what the members of the National Assembly are doing is whitewashing of civil administration has exposed the tenuous and fragile foundation of Nigeria’s brand of democracy to the danger, it portends for the people.

Braithwaite said: “The electoral, judicial and administrative systems and practices are so steep in corruption to the extent that, unless the people collectively and with singleness of purpose stand up squarely to dethrone king corruption, before any general election, there would be a catastrophic explosion.
