AFCON: Jonathan charges Eagles to beat Mali

President Goodluck Jonathan has charged the Super Eagles to beat Mali and qualify for the final of this year’s African Nations Cup in South Africa.

Nigeria battle Mali in Wednesday’s semi-final in Durban.

President Jonathan has promised to be at the final this weekend if Nigeria qualifies.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Aminu Maigari, said the Super Eagles are ready to fulfill President Jonathan’s desire to travel to South Africa for the championship game.

“I have just spoken to the head coach (Stephen Keshi) and the captain (Joseph Yobo), and they have assured me that they will fulfill Mr. President’s desire. It is rare to have this kind of support from a Head of State,” MTNFootball.com quoted Maigari as saying on Tuesday.

“On our part, the NFF has motivated the team enough to do Mr. President and the nation proud by not only winning on Wednesday, but lifting the trophy on Sunday.”

The team arrived in Durban, venue of Wednesday’s semi final against Mali, to a glorious welcome by the people of Durban (Nigerian residents and other nationals) who desire to be compensated for the disappointment of Super Eagles’ group stage elimination from the FIFA World Cup finals 32 months ago.

Needing only a win to reach the knock-out phase of Africa’s first FIFA World Cup, and backed by a vociferous full house at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the Eagles played a 2-2 draw with Korea Republic and exit the tournament.

Siasia tips Emenike to dazzle the world

Former Nigeria coach, Samson Siasia, has backed Emmanuel Emenike to be among the top strikers in the world very soon.

Siasia first capped the Spartak Moscow star two years ago and he told MTNFootball.com the big centre-forward will soon have the football world under his feet.

“He is a complete striker, getting the goals and creating chances for others to score. He has all it takes to be among the best strikers in the world, he will certainly go places,” Siasia told MTNFootball.com

“I know his qualities as a striker and that was why I went ahead to cap him to the Eagles. I am very happy with his performance so far at the Nations Cup.

“I love his commitment. He is using his strength and speed very well.”

The 25-year-old Emenike made his long-awaited international debut against Sierra Leone in Lagos in 2011, but it was shortlived as he lasted less than 20 minutes after he suffered an injury.

He scored his first Eagles goal against Argentina in a friendly in June 2011 and he has now netted three goals to propel Nigeria to Wednesday’s semi-final of the AFCON.

Eagles proved me wrong – Akpoborie

Ex- Super Eagles star, Jonathan Akpoborie has admitted the Super Eagles have proved him wrong after the team beat Cote d’Ivoire to reach the African Nations Cup semi-finals.

Akpoborie has been one of the dogged critics of coach Stephen Keshi and he said before the game that it would need a miracle for the eagles to fly past the star-studded Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire.

“Great win for Stephen Keshi, against all odds. I doubted them, same with a lot of Nigerians. But for me, they have exceeded all my expectations already,” Akpoborie told MTNFootball.com

“They believe in themselves and that was the magic. The Ivorians underrated them and our boys made the most of this.”

Akpoborie’s former international teammate Tijjani Babangida told MTNFootball.com that the Eagles stunned the world with their display and victory on Sunday.

“It was an amazing game they played, they surprised the entire world with their performance against Cote d’Ivoire. I don’t think I ever remember this team play such a great game,” Babangida told MTNFootball.com

“Mikel and Onazi were outstanding, even the central defenders did well to keep Drogba, Kalou and Gervinho at bay. In fact the boys were wonderful. Keshi did magic to be able to motivate the players.”

However, Babangida warned the players to put behind them this famous victory and focus on beating Mali on Wednesday in Rustenburg.

“The boys should forget about this game and focus on the Mali game because it will be a different ball game, Malians are younger and more energetic than the Ivorians, but with the way Eagles played, I believe they are good for the trophy now,” Babangida added.

    …Pips Cote d’Ivoire 2-1

Super Eagles of Nigeria on Sunday defeated tournament favourites Cote d’ Ivoire 2-1 in the quarter final match of the ongoing African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

One goal in each sent the Ivoirians, widely tipped to win the tournament packing.

The Nigerians clearly the underdogs in this match took the game to the Elephants from the blast of the whistle and deservedly took the lead in the 41st minute through Emmanuel Emenike whose unstoppable shot from the edge of the eighteen yard box flew past Boubakar Bary in goal for the Ivoirians.

The Elephants came out smoking in the second half in search of the equalizer which duly arrived in the 55th minute through Cheik Tiote who took advantage of a mix-up in the Nigerian defence to power a header past Vincent Enyeama.

With score standing at 1-1 the two teams went out in search of the winning goal and Enyeama’s superb double saves prevented the Ivoirians from going in front in the 73rd minute.

Nigeria went ahead in the 76th minute through Sunday Mba who struck an unstoppable volley past Bary.

From then it was a ding-dong affair and the Nigerians held on to secure a famous victory over the much heralded Didier Drogba- led Ivoirians.

Nigeria will meet Mali in one of the semi final matches on Wednesday.

    Keshi, Yobo clash at AFCON

Super Eagles defender, Joseph Yobo appeared to have been involved in a major falling out with Stephen Keshi, turkish-football.com reports.

A source from the Super Eagles camp in South Africa, according to the website, said the pair are only trying to manage the situation publicly.

Futaa.com says the problem started before the captain arrived at the team pre-tournament camp in Faro, Portugal in late December, after officials questioned his fitness level.

The problems further escalated after Nigeria’s opening game against Burkina Faso in Nelspruit when Yobo suffered a minor ankle knock.

The website gathered that the incident and other issues has led to an irreconcilable difference between the duo as the skipper is still hanging around out of respect for the nation, fans and some Nigeria Football Federation officials.

There are strong indications that the player is expected to answer questions about the incident and make a strong statement at the end of Nigeria’s campaign at the tournament.

We’ll deliver KO punch against Cote d’ Ivoire – Moses

Chelsea star Victor Moses has said Nigeria will engage Cote d’Ivoire in a heavyweight contest on Sunday and will deliver the “knockout punch.”

Moses scored twice from the penalty spot on Tuesday to keep Nigeria alive at the African Nations Cup and he has now said a little upset is on the cards against one of the tournament favourites.

“Everyone expects us to lose this match, but as players we just put our heads down and come Sunday we will cause a little upset,” said Moses, who is making is AFCON debut in South Africa, told MTNFootball.com.

“Cote d’ Ivoire has got quality players like Didier Drogba, one of the best strikers in Africa, even in Europe. But as a team we will concentrate on our own strengths.

“It won’t be as easy game, but we will try our best and win.”

He added: “We are preparing for the game, we are not listening to what is being said because people believe they will beat us because of the players they parade, but we are equal to the task.

“We will go to the pitch on Sunday, work hard and go on for an upset.”

The winger said the Eagles are committed to making Nigeria proud again.

  • Drogba seeks to go past Nigeria

Drogba seeks to go past Nigeria

Ivory Coast captain, Didier Drogba is looking forward to the quarter final game of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations against Nigeria on Sunday with victory in his mind, futaa.com reports.

Like many of his Côte d’Ivoire team-mates, Drogba has won countless trophies with his club sides, but what has eluded him, at least so far, is a winners’ medal from a major international competition with the national team.

At age 34, time is against the big striker, but he says it would be a grand achievement for the Elephants if they could win the AFCON in South Africa.

Last year, Côte d’Ivoire made it through to the final of the tournament in Gabon. There the team faced underdogs Zambia, and with the score goalless in the 70th minute, the Ivoirians were awarded a penalty, which Drogba shot over.

Although the striker made his spot kick in the eventual penalty shoot-out, the Chipolopolo went on to win 8-7 to deny Drogba and his team-mates once again.

Ironically, given the plaudits for his winning penalty for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final last year, Drogba is also known in Africa for missing a spot kick in the 2006 final shoot-out against Egypt.

But the irrepressible Abidjan native is keeping things positive ahead of what is sure to be a rugged quarter-final on Sunday against two-time champions Nigeria as he looks ahead to a possible final on February 10 in Johannesburg.

-I am really hoping that we can win the tournament this time around. It has been a long wait for us, and it would be massive if we could win, Drogba said.

Super Eagles’ players will each receive $15,000 if they beat Cote d’Ivoire and qualify for the semi-final of the 2013 African Cup of Nations on Sunday.

A top Nigeria Football Federation official reconfirmed an MTNFootball.com exclusive of several weeks ago when he also disclosed each player will be $20,000 richer if they triumph in the semi-final.

For victory in the championship game on February 10 inside the National Stadium in Johannesburg, each player will pocket another $30,000.

Each player received $30,000 a day after the team qualified for the quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Team sponsor Guinness has also made a financial commitment for goals scored at the AFCON, while the Eagles are expecting billionaire Aliko Dangote to splash more cash after they reached the last eight.

Each player was paid about $80,000 when Nigeria finished third at the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola.

On Sunday afternoon in Rustenburg, the team will face 1992 champions Cote d’Ivoire.

The winners of this match-up will clash with the winners of the quarterfinal between hosts South Africa and Mali.

    Ahmed Musa misses training

Super Eagles forward, Ahmed Musa did not train with the rest of the squad on Wednesday because of a running stomach, officials said.

“Ahmed Musa missed training, but we expect him to rejoin the team fully on Thursday,” a top team official informed MTNFootball.com

The 19-year-old CSKA Moscow star was widely tipped to take the African Nations Cup by storm, but he has found the going tough in his debut appearance.

His laboured showings in the competition saw him lose his starting place to Ikechukwu Uche on Tuesday against Ethiopia in Rustenburg.

Nigeria face Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday night in a titanic quarterfinal at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg with the winners to set up a semi-final clash against the winners between hosts South Africa and Mali.

  • AFCON: The glory of African football

Since time immemorial, soccer has been a game of interest to man. In the old British Empire, the game was used to entertain monarchs. But the first notable football match was held in 1862. After the match, the news spread quickly across the continent; this resulted to the first-ever championship in Africa in the year 1919.

Before the tournament, the game was already popular in Morocco. From the time of the first championship until when African Cup of Nations (AFCON) began, football had brought a unified glory to the continent and to the participating individual countries.

African countries started football game with the exception of South Africa, which was still chafing under apartheid regime. Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan contested but the Pharaohs of Egypt trashed Ethiopia 4 nil at the finals. This made them the first winners of the trophy. In 1959, the tournament came alive again but South Africa was again barred from participation by the apartheid potentate.

In 1963, the Black stars of Ghana joined the league. This made the Black Stars to be the first host of the competition in the western flank of the Africa. Nigeria, Tunisia and Ghana with the three pioneer countries battled for the cup. The Black Stars trashed the Nile Crocodiles of Sudan by three goals to nothing. Two years later, Ghana, as the defending champion, took its squad to Tunisia and defeated the host country at the final stage of the tournament.

In promoting the unity of diverse ethnic nations in Africa, AFCON has offered a good platform to unite the Anglophons and Francophone countries on the continent. This, it must be stated, has improved the relationship of countries in Africa over the years.

In its evolution, poor officiating has marred African soccer contest. Many countries have lamented the manner with which African referees officiate matches. A final match between Black Stars and Congo Kinshasa in 1968 championship was marred with irregularities. Ditto 1970 final match between Sudan and Ghana. The poor officiating of crucial matches in terms of keeping to the rules raised a lot of controversies in the continent’s football fiesta.

Due to biased officiating and intimidation by citizens of host country, Ghana’s players refused silver medals in the 1970 contest. In reaction, they were deported by the then Sudan’s military dictator. This act aggravated the crisis of confidence in the organisation of AFCON by the apex football body.

But when the Nigeria hosted the rest of Africa in 1980, there was an improvement in officiating. Green Eagles defeated Algerian team in the final match. The Black Stars came back with a winning team that lifted the trophy in 1982, putting Libyans on the losing side. In 1984, the final battle was between Nigeria and Cameroon, and Nigeria was defeated by three goals to one.

In 1990, Algeria hosted and trounced Nigeria with one goal at the final stage of the championship. Nigeria defeated Zambia at the final stage in Tunisia 94.

In 1996, South Africa, free from the apartheid regime, hosted the rest of Africa and defeated Tunisia two goals to nil at the finals.

In 2002, Mali hosted the championship and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun lifted the trophy, leaving the Senegalese team with nothing. In 2004, Tunisia hosted the championship and defeated Morocco at the finals. Egypt then set in with their chains of victory from 2006 to 2010 over Cote d’ivoire, Cameroon and Ghana. These chains of victory made the Pharaohs of Egypt unique in Africa not only being the first winners but the highest winner of the tournament.

Last year Zambia trashed Ivory Coast in a penalty shootout, making the country to win 2012 contest. The 2013 AFCON has begun. Should we also watch out for the underdog to lift the trophy? In trailing the blaze of the glory brought to Africa by the game, blue sharks of Cape Verde Island is making their debut appearance in the AFCON. We should watch out and see how the Cape Verde players will perform as they will be battling South Africa, Morocco and Angola at the group stages. But who wins the tournament this time around?
