    Senate salutes Eagles

The Senate on Wednesday congratulated the Super Eagles over their victory against the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia in the ongoing Africa Nations Cup in South Africa.

Senate President, David Mark, who made the commendation in his opening remarks on the floor of the Senate, however reminded the players that Nigeria’s pride is at stake.

Mark urged the players to work harder to carry the day in their next encounter with the Ivoirian team.

For the Senate President, the Keshi tutored lads should not let the country down.

He said, “We congratulate the Super Eagles for their success against the Ethiopians. Our prayers are with them. We thank God that they were able to convert the two penalties that were awarded to us.

“From now till Saturday when they will play again we will continue to pray for them.

“They should do more remembering that our national pride is at stake. They must not let us down.

“The players should take the tournament more seriously. We are with them.”

    Cash rolls in for Eagles

Super Eagles will get $30,000 each for reaching the African Nations Cup quarterfinal, while sponsors and businessman Aliko Dangote will also splash on the team.

Nigeria defeated Ethiopia 2-0 in last group game on Tuesday to book a quarterfinal match-up against Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday, MTNFootball.com reports.

Team secretary Dayo Enebi will hand over the qualification bonus to the players who are still basking in the euphoria of their qualification on Wednesday.

Officials have already promised more financial windfall.

Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi who gave the team $100,000 has also told them that Dangote has promised them a huge sum of cash if they advance to the last eight of the tournament.

Team sponsors Guinness also promised $5,000 for each goal scored by Eagles and so the boys have so far fetched $10,000 after their 2-0 win over Ethiopia.

  • Nigeria ‘limps’ to AFCON last eight

Nigeria on Tuesday qualified for the last eight of the ongoing African Nations Cup in South Africa.

Two penalty goals scored by Chelsea’s Victor Moses in the second half spared the Super Eagles blushes.

It was a generally poor performance by a Nigerian team that failed to muster one single shot on target throughout the first 45 minutes.

Nigeria which finished second in group C will meet group D winners in one of the quarter final matches next week.

    … Yobo out again

Super Eagles officials have again left out injury-hit skipper Joseph Yobo, while Emmanuel Emenike and Ike Uche lead the attack against Ethiopia.

MTNFootball.com gathered that Yobo has not fully recovered from an ankle injury, which he picked up in the match against Burkina Faso, and so he will miss his second straight match of the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The vastly experienced Fenerbache defender returned to full training this week, but officials said he is not yet 100 percent fit for the crucial encounter.

Stephen Keshi will therefore stick with the central defence pairing of Godfrey Oboabona and youngster Kenneth Omeruo.

Celtic defender Efe Ambrose will regain his place at right back after he served out one-match ban for receiving a red card against Burkina Faso.

Lazio youngster Ogenyi Onazi was the makeshift right back against Zambia on Friday.

In midfield, Enugu Rangers new signing Sunday Mba will make his AFCON debut ahead of Real Betis ace Nosa Igiebor, who has struggled to impress in South Africa.

The Eagles will parade a fast and daring strike force of Emmanuel Emenike, Ikechukwu Uche and Victor Moses.

MTNFootball.com reported on Monday that Villarreal striker Uche will make his first start at this tournament on Tuesday.

It means CSKA Moscow’s Ahmed Musa will start from the bench in this clash.

  • Ethiopia’s Bishaw vows to ‘beat’ Eagles in group decider

Ethiopia’s Bishaw vows to ‘beat’ Eagles in group decider

Ethiopia‘s coach Sewnet Bishaw is not mincing words and he has vowed to beat Nigeria in Tuesday’s last group C encounter in the ongoing African Nations Cup in South Africa.

Supersport.com reports that Ethiopia will advance to the last eight if the team beat Super Eagles in Rustenburg.

The coach also knows Nigeria very well. Despite being mauled in Lagos by four goals during the last AFCON qualifications his team almost beat the Eagles in the return leg played in Addis Ababa.

A last minute header from captain Joseph Yobo saved the Nigerians from an embarrassing defeat.

Bishaw remembered this and actually claimed this draw denied the Nigerians their first AFCON ticket in 17 years.

At least 15,000 Antelope fans have gathered in the city and will meet at the stadium to cheer Ethiopia and virtually make it a home game.

  • Mixed reactions trail Egyptian referee’s sack

Mixed reactions trail Egyptian referee’s sack

Football fans have expressed mixed reactions to the sack of Egyptian Referee, Ghead Grisha, who officiated in the Nigeria match against Zambia at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations South Africa.

The Confederation of Africa Football sacked the referee on Sunday following the award of a dubious penalty to Zambia for a foul the Eagles committed outside the 18-yard box during Friday’s match.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Super Eagles played a 1-1 draw with the Chipolopolo of Zambia in the group C match played at Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit.

Some fans told NAN that they were glad over the referee’s sack, while others regarded it as harsh, saying that he could have been given a two-match ban.

Dr. Hammed Odeyemi, a football instructor at the National Institute of Sports, Lagos welcomed the development, saying the decision would serve as a deterrent to referees who are partial judges.

“With this development, referees in Africa will check their excesses and measure up to the international standards. Of course, the sack is a wakeup call to referees to be cautious in their decisions.

“It will also give a good image to African football in the world,’’ he said.

Odeyemi urged African referees to go for more courses and be careful in their judgments on the pitch, to reposition African football and in international soccer competitions.

A lawyer, Adewale Akande, said the referee deserved the punishment, adding that there was no excuse for ignorance in law.

“The sacking is very orderly as there is no room for ignorance in the court of law,’’ he said.

Akande, however, urged the Super Eagles to put up a more fighting spirit in their encounter against Ethiopia on Tuesday, to go far in the tournament.

He added that Nigerians were expecting more than their output so far in the tournament.

Temitope Akinrinmisi, a banker, said tthe referee’s decision was wrong and he had to pay for it because it cost most Nigerians their happiness on a match they were expecting to win.

“The match portrays poor officiating that characterised most African leagues. I think the development is an indication that there are changes in African football,’’ he said.

Akinrinmisi, however, said that the CAF’s decision to sack the referee could have been re-considered as no one was above mistake.

“Nobody is above mistake, I feel that the body should have softened their stance on the referee by just sanctioning him for some matches, for others to learn,’’ he said.

  • AFCON: Moses, Yobo doubtful for Ethiopia tie

AFCON: Moses, Yobo doubtful for Ethiopia tie

The Nigerian duo of Victor Moses and Joseph Yobo could be left out of their African Nations Cup Group C clash with Ethiopia in Rustenburg on Tuesday.

Moses, 22, made his debut at the AFCON against Zambia but showed signs of still struggling with his hamstring, Supersport.com reports.

The Chelsea attacking winger played for 78 minutes in the game against Zambia before he was substituted for Brown Ideye and is yet to recover from the injury, according to head coach, Stephen Keshi.

Captain of the Super Eagles, Yobo is also a huge doubt owing to an ankle injury after missing the 1-1 draw with Zambia in Nelspruit on Friday.

“Victor Moses is still under observation. He’s been training but not at 100 percent right now. Same goes for Joseph Yobo who missed the last game,” said Keshi.

But the Nigerian manager is not ruling out both players from the crucial game against Ethiopia.

“They still have a good chance of making the squad for the game as they have been training with the team. But if they are not healthy enough we will seek other options,” he added.

Supersport.com was also informed that Warri Wolves’ defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe, has recovered from illness that has kept him out of the Nigerian squad.

  • NIGERIA VS ZAMBIA REFEREE: CAF expels Gehad

NIGERIA VS ZAMBIA REFEREE: CAF expels Gehad

Sequel to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF)’s threat of protesting against the biased officiating of the center referee that officiated the Nigeria versus Zambia match in Mboembela, Nelspruit on Friday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Committee on Referees has sent packing Egyptian referee, Grisha Gehad, who was in charge of the match.

The Super Eagles versus defending Champions Chipolopolo match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the equalizing goal for the Southern Africans was the result of a questionable spot kick call by the referee Gehad, who replays showed, had wrongly adjudged SS Lazio of Italy midfielder Ogenyi Onazi as having held the arms of a goal-bound Zambian attacker in the 83rd minute of the game.

A very competent source close to CAF told SportingLife under condition of anonymity that the referee has been sent back to his home country, Egypt.

“The center referee that officiated the Nigeria versus Zambia second group match that ended in a 1-1 score draw has been sent packing.

“The Egyptian referee, Grisha Gehad, who was in charge of the match between Nigeria and Zambia has been sent packing. Ghead, who was in charge of the match between Nigeria and Zambia has been sent packing. He was sent home because of his mishandling of the match”, the source told SportingLife.

“The penalty call by the referee was wrong. If there was a foul, it was definitely outside the 18-yard box and not a penalty. Referees are not allowed to re-write the rules of the game”, a top CAF executive member was quoted as saying by the source.

  • Cape Verde joins South Africa in AFCON last eight

Cape Verde joined hosts South Africa in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Angola at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday evening.

A first half own-goal from Cape Verde captain Nando had put the Sable Antelopes in charge, but late strikes from Fernando Varela and Heldon saw the Blue Sharks to their first victory in the tournament and secured a place in the next round, as Bafana Bafana drew 2-2 with Morocco in a concurrent game in Durban, Supersport.com reports.

The Angolans were the first to threaten a goal, as captain and star striker Manucho headed just wide of the far post from a 12th minute free kick. The Sable Antelopes dominated the opening 20 minutes, but it was soon the turn of the Islanders to begin to find a foothold in the game and pose some tough questions for their opponent’s defence.

On 33 minutes Angola took the lead. Gilberto whipped in a low cross from the left flank that was sliced into his own net by Cape Verde defender Nando.

The Blue Sharks almost came up with an immediate reply, as Babanco’s free kick was flicked just wide of the target by Julio Tavares in the 36th minute. A short while later Angola goalkeeper Lama had to palm away a well-hit drive from Platini.

Cape Verde introduced both Heldon and Djaniny at the start of the second half and nearly forced an equaliser soon after the restart, with Julio Tavares seeing a goal-bound header cleared off the line by Manucho Dinis.

On 66 minutes Heldon almost forced a goal for the Blue Sharks with a well-struck free kick, but Lama pushed the ball away to keep his side in the ascendancy.

Finally, with just under 10 minutes to play, Fernando Varela was able to force home a header from a rebound at a corner kick, making it 1-1 and giving the Islanders genuine hope that they could progress.

In the final minute of regulation time the Cape Verde’s dream came true when Heldon latched onto a rebound off goalkeeper Lama and fired home a left-footed shot to make it 2-1 and secure a famous victory.

South Africa finished top of Group A with five points. Cape Verde had the same tally, but finished second due to an inferior goal difference (the teams played to a 0-0 draw in their head-to-head match).

  • AFCON: Keshi sets sights on Ethiopia

AFCON: Keshi sets sights on Ethiopia

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has said the team will now focus on the final Group C tie against Ethiopia on Tuesday.

Nigeria and Zambia battled to a 1-1 draw on Friday.

The Nigerians again could not defend their lead as they allowed defending champions to fight back and cancel out Emmanuel Emenike’s 57th minute opener on Friday.

The two teams have recorded two points apiece in as many matches, while Burkina Faso which trashed Ethiopia 4-0 in Friday’s second match leads with four points.

Ethiopia has only one point from the same number of matches.

“We wanted the three points on Friday with due respect to Zambia, they are a great team and have been together for the past four years and also they are the defending champions.

“All the same, I’m happy with the result.

“We just have to get ahead and forge ahead against a very good Ethiopia team,” MTNFootball.com quoted Keshi as saying on the team’s last match slated for next Tuesday.
