AFCON: Nigeria, Zambia duel ends in 1-1 draw

Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday settled for a 1-1 draw with the Chipolopolo of Zambia in the ongoing African Nations Cup in South Africa.

The much anticipated group C encounter between two of the continent’s soccer heavyweights failed to live up to expectation, although the defending champions had a greater ball possession than their opponent.

Super Eagles lost a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 26th minutes when Mikel Obi failed to convert a penalty awarded by the Egyptian referee after Ahmed Musa was brought down in the Zambian box.

After a poor first half performance, Nigeria came out stronger in the second 45 minutes and deservedly took the lead through the Russia-based Emmanuel Emenike who side-stepped two Zambian defenders and slotted the ball into the net for his second goal in the competition.

The defending champions poured forward in search of an equalizer and they were rewarded in the 85th minute when the Egyptian referee awarded a controversial penalty against the Super Eagles.

Lazio’s Ogenyi Onazi was penalized for pulling down Emmanuel Mayuka, although television replay showed that the Zambian went down on his own.

Stand-in captain Kennedy Mweene coolly dispatched the resultant penalty to send the Zambians level.

    Ghana defeats Mali in AFCON

A solitary penalty strike from Mubarak Wakaso was enough to hand Ghana’s Black Star its first win in the 2013 African Cup of Nations on Thursday.

The team defeated Mali 1-0 in a Group B match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, MTNFootball.com reports.

The first 45 minutes saw Ghana playing the better quality football, but for all their promise and swift passing they actually struggled to create many decent opportunities on goal from open play.

One of the biggest talking points of the half happened as early as the seventh minute when many would have argued that the Black Stars goalkeeper, Fatau Dauda, should have been show a straight red card.

Miss communication between defender John Boye and Dauda allowed Mali’s Seydou Keita to pressure the goalkeeper into handling the ball outside the 18-yard box.

Being the last man, between Keita and the goal, Dauda should have been shown red, but instead the referee opted to show some kindness and branded the yellow card.

From the resulting free-kick Keita came within inches of giving Mali the lead when his 20-yard effort whispered past the left-hand post.

After that, however, it was all Ghana but they struggled to break down the Eagles defence and had to opt to shoot from long range as a result.

Harrison Afful came closest to scoring from distance for the Black Stars in the 24th minute when his 30-yard thunderbolt sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

In the 32nd minute Ghana came close again to breaking the deadlock, this time from a left-side set-piece. The ball was whipped into the box and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu rose above the Mali defence to head the ball on goal, but he saw his 14-yard effort bounce off the right hand post.

Finally, in the 36th minute the Back Stars were able to fashion an opening on goal in general play as Asamoah Gyan slipped Agyemang-Badu through on goal, but he was recklessly pulled down inside the box by Mali’s Adama Tamboura and the referee did not hesitate to point to the spot.

Mubarak Wakaso stepped up and superbly dispatched the penalty into the top right-hand corner of the net to give Ghana the lead, 1-0, a lead they kept going into the half time break.

The second 45 minutes saw the play move from end to end as Ghana tried to put the result beyond doubt while Mali tried desperately to find the equaliser.

But the amount of pressing by both sides resulted in the game being a little broken and sloppy. Consequently, players were getting frustrated and a host of yellow cards (five to be precise in the second half – two for Ghana and three for Mali) were shown for careless tackles.

  • Moses returns for crunch clash with Zambia

Moses returns for crunch clash with Zambia

Chelsea winger, Victor Moses, who missed Nigeria’s opening game, is expected to enter the Africa Cup of Nations fray against Zambia on Friday.

Moses’ return from injury is welcome news for the Super Eagles, who take on the defending champions four days after being forced to a 1-1 draw by Burkina Faso.

That surprise stalemate has placed added emphasis on an already tough assignment for Stephen Keshi-tutored side, MTNFootball.com reports.

Keshi, captain of the Nigeria side that defeated Zambia to claim the country’s second title in 1994, was in a relaxed mood at the team’s plush hotel outside South Africa’s north eastern city on Thursday.

“That title win was 19 years ago, we have a different game ahead of us tomorrow,” MTNFootball.com quoted him as saying at a press conference.

On Moses, set to make his Nations Cup debut, he confirmed: “Victor trained well on Wednesday and, hopefully, will be okay to play. He will bring his desire to the side.”

Keshi has one of the most demanding jobs in African football with 180 million would-be coaches back home picking his side.

Reflecting on that pressure, he said: “It is stressful. Everyone wants a return to the glory years, but to get there you have to develop.

“It’s difficult because everyone wants to tell you who to play in your team, so I close my ears and do what is best for the side — it’s not easy!

“But it’s not only a Nigeria thing — it was the same when I coached Mali.”

Keshi puts birthday ceremony on hold

The pressure of the ongoing African Cup of Nations in South Africa has meant that Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi will put aside any plan of celebrating his 51st birthday.

Keshi turned 51 on Wednesday but the tactician is said to be more concerned with his side’s preparation for Friday’s epic clash with African champions, the Chipolopolo of Zambia after they failed to claim all points against Burkina Faso in a 1-1 draw on Monday.

Supersport.com reports that executive committee members of the Nigeria Football Federation had emerged from the showdown talks saying they have told Keshi and his team to beat Zambia this Friday as well as put up an overall good outing at the AFCON.

“We have told them to go and put up a credible performance that will make Nigerians proud. The good thing is that we were not disgraced in the first game because we didn’t lose. Every team in the group drew their games but we have told them to improve on their performance in subsequent games,” Supersport.com quoted NFF president, Aminu Maigari, as saying on Wednesday.

Another NFF board member, Emeka Inyama said: “We have asked the coaching crew to give us reassurances of a win over Zambia. The Zambians were not spectacular in their first game against Ethiopia. We’ve made it clear that the team needs to beat Zambia to ensure they qualify from the group stage.”

However, sources inside the Nigerian camp at the tournament believe the pressure may have been cranked up after the emergency meeting between the leadership of the nation’s FA and the coaches led by Keshi in Nelspruit, South Africa on Tuesday.

Keshi was said to have kept mum when the press asked him about the reason behind the meeting.

  • Soccer fans task ‘wealthy Nigerians’ on AFCON

Soccer fans task ‘wealthy Nigerians’ on AFCON

The Nigerian community in South Africa has urged wealthy Nigerians to sponsor Super Eagles’ fans to watch the team’s matches at the ongoing 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to the body, such well-to-do Nigerians should emulate an Ethiopian billionaire, Mohammed Al-Amoudi, by providing support to enable their compatriots to watch the matches.

Some of the Nigerians spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria Correspondent in South Africa on Wednesday.

They complained of lack support, particularly in transportation and tickets, to watch the national team’s matches in the tournament.

“It is unbelievable to see the large number of Ethiopians at the stadium on Monday to watch their national team game against Zambia.

“The number was so overwhelming: everywhere you turn to inside and outside the stadium, all you see are the Ethiopian supporters.

“What amused some of us was the fact that it was an individual that provided the resources for the Ethiopians to come out in their numbers to support their national team.

“We have lots of wealthy Nigerians `who can support a worthy cause’ for nation building and integration through sports. More so, this could be used in promoting the good image of Nigeria,’’ South Africa-based Olubanjo Adesuyi said.

He said the number of Ethiopians in South Africa could not match the number of Nigerians living in the country.

“Nigerian citizens are more in number than the Ethiopians and you know that an average Nigerian is football crazy and always wants to support the National team.

“But the greatest problem we have here as individuals and groups is lack of transportation to the match venues.

“Although a lot of Nigerians drove more than four hours to Nelspruit to cheer the Super Eagles, we will match the Ethiopians, if we have transport from different parts of South Africa to match venues to cheer the Super Eagles,’’ Adesuyi said.

He added that some fans were ready to purchase match tickets, if transportation would be provided.

  • AFCON: CAF Hammer falls on Ethiopia

AFCON: CAF Hammer falls on Ethiopia

The Confederation of African Football has fined Ethiopia’s Football Federation $10,000 after the team’s fans hurled vuvuzela’s and other missiles onto the pitch during Monday’s 1-1 draw with Zambia at the African Cup of Nations, futaa.com reports.

Ethiopia’s return to AFCON after over three decades absence has been marred with poor disciplinary record, a situation which prompted the Confederation of African Football to slam a heavy fine on the East African country.

During Monday’s match, the Ethiopian keeper was red-carded for committing a serious foul against his Zambian opponent and he will miss the team’s next two matches against Burkina Faso and Nigeria.

  • Cote D’ Voire defeats Togo in AFCON

Gervinho’s 87th minute strike secured three points for Ivory Coast over Togo in the first Group D game of the on-going Africa Nations Cup in South Africa, futaa.com reports.

Africa’s footballer of the year Yaya Toure  put star-studded Ivory Coast ahead with just eight minutes into the game, but the first half  ended at 1-1.

Adebayor was gifted with an early opportunity in the second minute after a poor pass by Kolo Toure, but goalkeeper Barry Copa rescued the situation for the Ivoirians.

Ivory Coast gradually came alive, and in the 8th minute, Gervinho went past a defender to locate Yaya Toure, whose shot did not miss the target.

The early lead by Ivory Coast did not affect the Togolese, who took the game to their more illustrious opponent.

Max Gradel was booked in the 32nd minute after Togo  missed a chance to equalize.

A minute later, Vincent Bousou was also booked for rough tackle in the centre circle.

Togo’s persistence paid off when the team got a corner kick and Jonathan Ayite was well positioned to equalize with the last kick of the first half.

After the break, both sides came out stronger, looking for the winner, but Alaixia Romao was cautioned for a rough tackle on Gervinho.

Ya Koman almost gave Ivory Coast the lead in the 55th minute, but Togo’s goalkeeper parried away the ball.

Salomon Kalou  came in for Gradel in the 58th minute to add more bite to the Ivory Coast attack.

  • Ethiopia holds Zambia in group C opener

Ethiopia came from a goal down to force the defending champions Zambia to a 1-1 draw at the Mbombela stadium on Monday, futaa.com reports.

Goals from Zambia’s Collins Mbesuma in the first half and a second half equalizer from Ethiopia’s Adane Gima made sure both sides shared points in the keenly contested encounter.

Zambia came off a sloppy start to take a 1-0 half time lead against a 10- man Ethiopian team in the Group ‘C’ opener that kicked off at 1800hrs from the Mbombela Stadium.

Substitute Addis Hintsa played a penetrative ball forward to find Saladin Seid on the edge of the box.

He controlled the ball and pushed it into the area for the onrushing Girma, who shot past Zambian Kenneth Mweene at the near post.

  • AFCON: Emenike leads Eagles’ attack against Burkina Faso

AFCON: Emenike leads Eagles’ attack against Burkina Faso

Russia-based striker Emmanuel Emenike is set to lead the Super Eagles charge for goals against Burkina Faso Monday night in Nelspruit, MTNFootball.com reports.

Emenike is preferred to the prolific Ikechukwu Uche, who was the top scorer for Nigeria with three goals in the qualifying tournament for the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

The Spartak Moscow centre forward has struggled to fire the goals in a green-and-white shirt since he made his long-awaited debut against Sierra Leone in Lagos in February 2011.

However, Coach Stephen Keshi rates him very highly, even tipping him to match the exploits of the country’s most prolific international striker the late Rashidi Yekini.

His power will stand him in good stead against the very physical Burkinabes.

He is expected to profit from the quality wing play of Chelsea star Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa, while Mikel marshals a midfield that also includes Fegor Ogude and Nosa Igiebor.

Vincent Enyeama will man the goal, while the defensive line up of Elderson Echiejile, Efe Ambrose, skipper Joseph Yobo and Godfrey Oboabona will strive to prevent the Burkinabes from hitting the Eagles’ net.

  • AFCON: Burkina Faso vows to shock Nigeria

AFCON: Burkina Faso vows to shock Nigeria

Burkina Faso coach Paul Put said he hopes to upstage Nigeria in Monday’s Group C match in Nelpsruit to get off to a winning start.

Nigeria has not lost to the Stallions in six meetings.

The Super Eagles has won four and drawn two of these matches, while both sides have clashed only once at the African Cup of Nations in 1978, when Burkina Faso was known as Upper Volta.

Nigeria ran away with 4-2 victory in that encounter.

Put said his team will go for a winning start against a Nigerian team known for its individual talent but has struggled to play as a team.

“We need to win our first game at all costs to give us the confidence we need,” MTNFootball.com quoted the Belgium-born Put as saying on Sunday.

“Nigeria has players playing in major championships such as in England and Italy, but having individually talented players does not necessarily mean the team is a great one.”

Nigeria will still be favourites to win this game but both Eagles players Efe Ambrose and Ahmed Musa told MTNFootball.com they will not take Burkina Faso lightly because they wish to begin their campaign also on a winning note.

“We are going for victory in our first game against Burkina Faso. It is very important to win it because it will put us on good footing,” said Musa, one of 17 players who are making their AFCON debut in South Africa
