Educate farmers on FG incentives, Afenifere tells governors

Pan Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has urged governors in the southwest region to educate farmers in their states on various agricultural incentives provided by the federal government.

It said farmers in the southwest states were not aware of available incentives and grants by the federal government.

The Afenifere made the call at its caucus meeting held at the residence of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

Spokesman for Afenifere, Jare Ajayi, who spoke to journalists after the meeting, said the caucus was worried about possible extinction of the Yoruba language.

Ajayi stated that parents and governors were encouraged to protect the Yoruba language.

He said recognized and commended  Kole Omololu as Acting Secretary General of Afenifere.

He said: “The Afenifere meeting, encouraged the state governors in the Yoruba speaking states to make it easy for farmers in their respective states to be able to assess this facilities at the federal level.

“It’s of great concern to the meeting that many parents are not speaking let him alone teaching their children and what that language anymore, we create a positive danger of extinction in the near future the meeting there for and courage all parents to not only be speaking the language in their homes.

“The farmers said there are some facilities that they learnt are available with the government particularly from the federal level that they are not enjoying.

“The meeting of the Afenifere caucus today, however, encouraged these people to continue to give people the information about the available facilities in some cases where they learned that there are situations where the state government needed to pay counterpart funds to be able to assess for our farmers to be able to access this funds from the federal level.”

Afenifere and the progressive camp (1)

When sometime in 2008, the late Yinka Odumakin invited me to his 23, Sylvia Crescent, Anthony Village-office in Lagos, little did I know that a big surprise was waiting for me. A fine gentleman with a consistent commitment to the progressive bent, Odumakin had offered to pay me a visit but since it was unYoruba for leaders and elders to initiate the kind of visit he was envisaging, I opted for the opposite. And there I was, face-to-face, with the inimitable Odumakin and the irresistible Jimi Agbaje, aka JK. One thing led to another and I eventually became the pioneer Administrative Secretary of the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), under the national chairmanship of Olawale Oshun.

Notable members of the prestigious Group included Ayo Afolabi, former Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Babafemi Ojudu, Bisi Adegbuyi, Oye Oyewumi, Lai Oyeduntan, Olutola Mobolurin, Ademola Oyinlola, Tokunbo Ajasin, Jumoke Anifowose, Biodun Oyebanji, Zacch Adedeji and Agbaje. Among others were Kunle Famoriyo, Ropo Sekoni, Charles Akinola, Adedamola Dada and the now-deceased former Deputy Governor Funmilayo Olayinka of Ekiti State (1960 – 2013), Dipo Famakinwa (1967 – 2017), Bayonile Ademodi (1952 – 2020) and, of course, Odumakin (1966 – 2021).

On March 26, 2024, Oshun clocked 74 years on the Planet Earth and a group of intellectuals in the Southwest under the leadership of Professor Lai Olurode converged on his Ijebu-Imushin country house in Ogun State to honour this man of many parts with a Roundtable Discussion on the Governance Crisis in Nigeria.

Oshun has done well and he deserves to be celebrated. He has paid his dues but then, only an ungrateful heart will also say that God has not been good to this delightful ideologue of the All Progressives Congress (APC) bent. So, he has no reason to complain! Author, journalist and farmer, he’s a former Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives and prominent member of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). He was also a close ally of the late MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. As a matter of fact, Oshun was reportedly one of the few, prominent faces at the historic Epetedo Declaration on June 11, 1994. ARG under Oshun’s leadership produced the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Strategy Roadmap which led to the formal inauguration of DAWN Commission by the Southwest governors in July 2013.

It is important to note that ARG was formed “with the stated intent of reuniting the feuding factions” in Afenifere and as “a necessary body to preserve the ethnic identity of the Yorubas.” If one may therefore ask, how smooth has the journey of hope which the Group brought to the Yoruba race with its formation been and how many of its founding philosophical objectives have been realized? Looking around today, the mainstream Afenifere has become more of a wrong noise than communal togetherness. While one faction, led by Reuben Fasoranti, is obviously looking in the direction of ‘E lo f’okan bale’, the other, headed by Ayo Adebanjo, is excruciatingly Obidient-compliant. Since the guardians of society are either dead or deep in slumber, Yoruba people have become deeply divided and that’s to our collective hurt!

Beyond its sequined glint, Yorubaland had expected Afenifere to serve as a very powerful research institution like the Chatham House in London. Though ARG has done one or two things along this line, it is unfortunate that what we now have is more of interest-leaders and self-servers who have developed an unsatisfying urge for political slots for their children and concubines thereby leaving the children of the poor with no future! And they have succeeded in doing that! And nobody, except the Stone of Israel, can put an end to it!

In the days of Obafemi Awolowo, Adekunle Ajasin and Abraham Adesanya, the fear of Afenifere was the beginning of wisdom for any governor who wanted to access relevance in the zone, even beyond. How come that has faded away so soon? Where did the rain start beating the Yorubas and who are the giants and strongholds who want Yorubaland to not remain even stagnant but speedily moving backward? Has the Yoruba race arrived at the desired shore and what’s the opium keeping the actors in deep sleep? Is the Yoruba progressive corporate world the way it should be? What efforts has Afenifere made to reverse the pains of the grinding penury in the midst of stupendous plenty that has now sadly become the lot of Western Nigeria? In the sincerity of his heart, would Awolowo have abandoned his people to their fate without proffering urgent, comprehensive and soul-saving solutions at a time like this

Western Nigerian Government Broadcasting Corporation, WNTV (1959)! Liberty Stadium (1960)! University of Ife (1961)! Cooperative Bank (1961)! Cocoa House (1964)! Lapal House (1978)! And many others! Whereas some leaders have been in charge of the destiny of Yorubaland for more than two decades with next-to-nothing to show for it, what Awolowo and his colleagues did with a shorter reign is what the children of Oduduwa have got as their inheritance till date. It is therefore unfortunate that successive leaders have only been feeding fat on the labour of these heroes past!

Also, time was when the media space was controlled by the Southwest. Now, the zone is almost nowhere to be found on the media map. In the Banking sector, not much is happening! In the political space, the North has not lost its grip; and, in Agriculture, it has lost touch. But for Amotekun, the security situation in the Southwest would have been worse! So, what’s happening?

If we want to talk about Afenifere, we have to go back to the treaty that ended the Kiriji War and the formation of the West African Students Union (WASU). The foundation of Egbe Omo Oduduwa by Awolowo was a spinoff of WASU and it put together a level of work which led to the manifesto of the Action Group, ‘Life more abundant’; and it made a difference because we’re not just talking about ‘Free Education’ which was the centerpiece but also the formation of the development financing institutions such as the WNDC, Western Nigeria Finance Corporation and Western Nigeria Housing Corporation, established in 1958. Yoruba leaders at the time followed the paths already embarked upon by the Brazilians. Of course, that’s why Brazil is not looking for foreign investments. Brazil established the Brazilian Bank for Sustainable Development (BNDES) in 1952 and it’s now about the most powerful financing agent for development in the world. Every year, Brazil recapitalizes BNDES with about 1% of her foreign earnings. That’s why the Bank, according to the Financial Times of London, can give loans with up to 50 years tenor. Impliedly, a capitalized WNDC or Cooperative Bank would have made Olokola Deep Seaport in Ondo State the best outside of Freetown.

Again, that a Yorubaman is Nigeria’s president does not mean the race should go to bed and start snoring! Already, the noise in town is that too many appointments are in the hands of the Yorubas and that it is because the president is of the Southwest extraction. So, let Afenifere visit Awolowo’s grave with a view to atoning for its sins before it’s too late. There and then, it should tie up with institutions like the Pension Fund to embark on serious capital projects that can give loans of up to 30 years tenor. But, wait a minute: what have been the roles of the Ministries of Regional Integration in the six states that make up the Southwest? If they have an agenda for DAWN, why can’t they go back to it?

    Afenifere chieftain backs Tinubu’s govt

President of Afenifere World Congress, Bayo Ogunmeno, has urged Nigerians to be patient with President Bola Tinubu, “as he repositions the country.”

Ogunmeno, in a statement yesterday in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, said Tinubu meant well, but he needed to be given more time to carry out his agenda of turning the country around.

Ogunmeno, coordinator of Ogun State 4 BAT Forum, said people should also scrutinise performances of the governors, instead of concentrating only on the Federal Government.

“… We should also assess performance of governors.

“A few months ago, Tinubu gave N5 billion to the governors funds to buy and distribute rice and grains but  some governors didn’t purchase or distribute them to their people. Governors have usurped functions of council chairmen.”

Ooni, Afenifere renew calls for restructuring

    • By Prince Faloye

The Ooni of Ife,  Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has called for restructuring to foster true federalism.

He said restructuring will offer solutions to many socio-economic and political challenges.

Also,  Afenifere reiterated irs  belief that only restructuring can Nigeria.

Oba Ogunwusi, who was speaker at an Economic and Financial Crime Commission  (EFCC), in Abuja, urged the Federal Government to consider the option.

Oba Ogunwusi still in tandem with Afenifere, whose founder Obafemi Awolowo had Ooni Aderemi backing, and knows like every insightful progressive Yoruba that we need total restructuring – political, economic and cultural. As stated at the anti corruption event, there is a need for restructuring and devolution of power to curb corruption. This has nothing to do with partisan politics, religion or ethnicity but basic management accounting principles that the same functional level can’t collect and dispense monies.

Let the local government be directly in charge of resources, while States account and federal overlooks and regulates. In addition to the decentralization of accounting in order to reduce corruption, it is also efficient management, especially for security and crime fighting, since police with local knowledge are best suited to deploy resources to fight crime. The same logic applies to the identification and utilization of natural and human resources of a state, since Abuja civil servants can’t be better informed than those at the local and state governments. It is all simple common sense, but unfortunately colonists, neocolonists and internal colonizers prefer to centralize all the functions for corrupt exploitative control.

President Tinubu must listen to the voice of reason of Afenifere and especially Ooni of Ife, who is not only the Yoruba spiritual leader but also the leader of the indigenous African civilization of South and Middlebelt, sharing the chairmanship of the Nigerian Traditional Council with Sultan of Sokoto, the leader of the Afro-Arabic civilization. Oonirisa’s non-partisan role as the head of the Original African civilization is globally recognized, being the head of the new African monarchs coalition, and even foremost Pan-Africanists like Madam Arikana of Zimbabwe and Prof Lumumba made him the leader of their global Black foundation – ADDI.

Restructuring as spelt out in the 2014 Confab Report and Adamasigba Declaration which Oonirisa Ogunwusi attended and affirmed, must be holistic. It is a fact that many states can’t be fiscally self-sustainable if political and economic restraints are not fully addressed. Some have advocated a form of a Marshallian Plan to help the states on their feet like was done for European economies after the Second World War, however rather than throwing cash at the states, we must restructure the colonial economics bequeathed to us by the British.

Before the British politically restructured our two civilizations (Indigenous African and Afro-Arabic) into Nigeria, they first undertook economic restructuring by diverting our West-East civilizational trade routes to North-South colonial trade routes to empty our land of resources and use it to dump their own manufactures on us to kill our local production. Therefore as a matter of urgency, we must build three West-East railways – Lagos-Calabar, Ilorin-Yola and Sokoto-Maiduguri to reinstate our civilizational economics, from which every state can build branch lines to nooks and corners of the state. It is a known fact that the 1827 to 1850 Railways construction boom in the USA was what actually propelled them into industrialization. If every Nigerian state is connected by railways, not only will they be able transport their produce to the markets, but the state railway companies will spur growth in iron and chemicals industries used to build and maintain the railroads and railcars. With this economic restructuring from colonial to civilizational economics, no state would suffer from restructuring away from the center.

Afenifere, understanding the difference in Indigenous African and Afro-Arabic civilizational aspirations in restructuring, united the South and Middlebelt in a restructuring coalition based on equity and fairness for all, which inspired their backing for the Southeast rotational presidency through Peter Obi. This is not a recent trajectory since Chief Obafemi Awolowo had first articulated the common civiliational aspirations, leading him to reach out to the HRM Aku Uka of Wukari, the head of the main ancient indigenous African Middlebelt conglomeration called the Kwararafa Confederacy and in 1958 struck political alliances with the United Middlebelt Convention led by Joseph Tarka. Awolowo also made it clear that Igbos are our natural strategic allies while we can only get a subservient master slave relationship with the Northern Afroasiatic civilization. So Afenifere has stuck to these civilizational principles from Awolowo even up to Fasonranti/Falae that led the handshake across Niger and supported the South and Middlebelt alliance based on restructuring and rotational presidency, before coming out of retirement to derail the long held policy by switching to Tinubu.

Like Oonirisa Aderemi that recognized the global Black youth movement for independence and civil rights and backed Awolowo for a more culturally conscious and decisive movement, Oonirisa Ogunwusi is aware of the new global Black youth agitation for political and cultural justice, which exploded into Black Lives Matter riots in the Diaspora and Endsars riots movement, and therefore sees the urgent need for more positive balanced action through cultural, political and economic restructuring. Oonirisa addressed the need for cultural restructuring through civilizational reawakening of conscious Black youth by creating the African Sociocultural Harmony and Enlightenment Foundation, made up of paramount leaders and scholars of the major ethnicities of South and Middlebelt indigenous African civilization, whose aim is to reverse the colonial epistemicide by teaching our common genetic and cultural origins and linkages, belief systems and glorious histories towards global Black Renaissance.

The next step of our colonial cultural restructuring was achieved by adding the Middlebelt, the northern frontier of the indigenous African civilization to the Northern Protectorate controlled by the Afro-Arabic civilization, instead of the indigenous African Southern Protectorate. Then, in 1939 the Southern Protectorate was broken into Western and Eastern regions to fuel divisive tribal perspectives within the indigenous African civilization and pro-independence movement, which has weakened the South and Middlebelt peoples ability to politically agitate for collective aspirations till today. While Afenifere united Original African civilizational aspirations, Oonirisa identified and unified the Original African civilization through common genetic and cultural origins.

It is upon President Tinubu to implement political and economic restructuring, regardless of partisan politics, religion or ethnicity in order to make Nigeria work efficiently for everyone. Failure to do so will lead to continued arrested economic and political development and cultural injustice at the very least, and total disintegration at the worse. In the absence of a direct whisper from the gods to do the right thing, Oonirisa the Igbakeji Orisa voice shouldn’t be ignored. The Voice of the people like Afenifere, and that of the non-partisan Oonirisa, is surely the voice of the gods calling for restructuring, which if ignored the youth will revolt against their continued arrested development and poverty.

    YCE backs Afenifere’s in-house reorganisation

Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has described Afenifere’s in-house reorganisation as an “efficient and diplomatic move for in-house restructuring.”

The council, which comprises elders across Yoruba land, said the decision was taken after a long period of rapprochement, which was rebuffed by a party in the crisis within the Yoruba socio-political organisation.

YCE in a statement yesterday by its Secretary-General, Chief Oladipo Oyewole, said it found the imbroglio in Afenifere unfortunate, and recalled the unsuccessful efforts it made to intervene and secure a mutual reconciliation.

It hoped that the reorganisation, which abrogated the positions of deputy leader and acting leader, would solve the problem.

The statement said: “We of the Yoruba Council of Elders find the imbroglio in the Afenifere quite unfortunate.

“It is a fact that we read of the unfolding event on pages of newspapers early in 2023 and noted the rather unfortunate unease within Afenifere.

“Thereafter we attempted to mediate as Yoruba elders (relating with more elderly papas). We tactfully rose to the occasion with the simple intention to mediate in the one for all & all for one principle. We were determined to broker peace in the Afenifere caucus.

In view of our set objective, we made efforts with five meetings held four times in Ogun State and one time in Ondo State. But a side of the parties involved in the matter looked at us (YCE) as intruders. That side tactfully kept us at bay until what should be expected of an incompatible relationship happened at the apex body last week when Afenifere reshuffled and modified its structure.

“Granted that this is a core base for Awoists, all machinery for reconciliation were tactfully employed and well deployed by the YCE, but the party that rebuffed us remained adamant and unyielding.

“It is our hope that the new arrangement in Afenifere will restore peace to the pan-Yoruba group.

“For now Afenifere strategy stands as an efficient and diplomatic move for in-house restructuring.

The body needs to stabilise, then move on to achieve its set goals and objectives in a new Nigeria.”

The abrogation of the two positions affected its erstwhile Acting Leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who is viewed to have taken some decisions that were unpopular with members of the organisation in the last few years.

  • Afenifere edges out Adebanjo

    Afenifere edges out Adebanjo

Last Wednesday, after years of pussyfooting, Afenifere finally united to edge out its inflexible and controversial Acting Leader Ayo Adebanjo. They had made the attempt before, just before the last presidential election, but somehow the attempt fell flat. Now, they have managed to perfect the modality of regicide, and have done it flawlessly and sumptuously. There is no resurrecting the 95-year-old former acting leader. According to the exasperated Afenifere leaders who met at the home of their leader, Reuben Fasoranti: “Flowing from this, the Leader (Pa Fasoranti) then declared as follows that ‘In the light of recent events and the pressing need to reposition and rejuvenate Afenifere, it has been decided as follows: the position of Acting Leader and Deputy Leader has now been abrogated, the responsibilities and authority of advising the Leader of Afenifere and Asiwaju Yoruba are now vested in the Afenifere Elders Caucus which is hereby constituted.”

Read Also: Afenifere abrogates office of acting leader

The communiqué was terse, but it boomed with a note of finality, for the attendees who signed off on the new order were the who-is-who in Afenifere and Yoruba land. Pa Fasoranti is infirm but still rational and in full possession of his progressive ideology. He had much earlier relinquished his powers to the increasingly conservative Pa Adebanjo, only for the latter to railroad the Yoruba into the amorphous Labour Party (LP) in the last election cycle, and before then had covertly leaned towards Atiku Abubakar’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Under him, Afenifere had rebuffed the All Progressives Congress (APC) on which platform their son, Senator Bola Tinubu, was contesting the presidency. It took a tug of war to get the Yoruba redirected to the progressive cause.

Now the struggle is over. Afenifere is united, back to its regal self, and still managing to reignite both its vibrancy and independence. Pa Adebanbjo may attempt to reassert himself and continue to issue statements, but he must be keenly aware what awaits any Yoruba man who distances himself from the pack. Radicalism in the twilight of his years does not befit him.

Afenifere abrogates office of acting leader

Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political organisation, Afenifere, yesterday scrapped the office of acting leader.

Pa Ayo Adebanjo was last year named acting leader by Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

The decision to scrap the position was made at its first general meeting of the year, held at the Akure home of Pa Fasoranti.

Fasoranti declared that the office of acting leader was no longer in existence.

The motion to scrap the office was moved by Dr. Samuel Ibikunle.

He said: “You know Afenifere had been having problems, not just this one we are talking about. We all know that there is another group, which calls itself Renewal Afenifere Group. So those people had been there. But we don’t hear much about them again, we always hear of our own Afenifere.

“But in recent times, there have been some issues that wanted to divide us, the acting leader of Afenifere, Chief Adebanjo, who was put there by Chief Fasoranti.

“And there are some issues then that who’s supposed to be the next President of Nigeria and of course the real Afenifere, when we considered everything, we felt that support should be given to Bola Tinubu and our acting leader, Adebanjo, decided that they are going to support someone else. Many of us didn’t support that position because Tinubu is a Yoruba man, and we felt that Tinubu’s ideas will help the country to move forward.”

“So we took the position that this man would be the next President. The type of leadership Afenifere deserves all the time was disappearing if you remember the time of Chief Awolowo, Ajasin and Adesanya. Those were the people who conducted the affairs of Afenifere and they listened to everybody.

“Now we want to go back to where we should be, the type of leadership we are used to under the leadership of Baba Awolowo, Ajasin and Adesanya. Now, the motion I moved is more of saying that let’s go back to where we belong, let’s go back to the way we used to do things in Afenifere, let’s go back to the ‘Omoluabi’ way of settling issues, which affected Yoruba race.”

Dare Babarinsa said: “You’re speculating whether it will bring crisis or not. But I will like to say that in this particular issue, the position of acting leader was created by Baba Fasoranti and in his wisdom he has chosen a leader, Chief Adebanjo and therefore he believed that that era should be concluded and I believe Baba has taken the right decision and it was Baba Fasoranti that appointed Kabiesi Olaitan as deputy leader.”

Reaffirming its position that Afenifere remained an Ideological Movement, the communique called on former president Olusegun Obasanjo to tender an unreserved public  apology to Yoruba Obas for disrespecting them at a public function.
