  • Airtel Africa to buy back $100m shares

Airtel Africa to buy back $100m shares

Airtel Africa Plc plans to launch a share buyback programme next month under which the telecommunication company will reacquire not less than $100 million worth of shares over the next 12 months.

The board of Airtel Africa yesterday indicated that the $100 million share buyback to be launched in March 2024 was due to the holding company’s substantial cash accretion and its consistent strong cash generation.

The share buyback was part of the highlights of the third quarter report of the company which showed considerable increases in customer base and penetration.

According to the board, the company has made significant progress in recent years to reduce leverage and strengthen its balance sheet, thus it is in good position for the share buyback.

“The board believes that repurchasing its own shares is an attractive use of its capital in light of the group’s strong long term growth outlook. The programme will be executed using its cash reserves and in accordance with applicable securities laws and regulation,” the company stated.

The report for the nine-month period ended December 31, 2023 showed that total customer base grew by 9.1 per cent to 151.2 million. The penetration of mobile data and mobile money services continued to rise, driving a 22.4 per cent increase in data customers to 62.7 million and a 19.5 per cent increase in mobile money customers to 37.5 million.  Constant currency ARPU growth of 10 per cent was primarily driven by increased usage across all segments.

The report showed that mobile money transaction value increased by 41.3 per cent in constant currency, with third quarter annualised transaction value of $116 billion in reported currency.

Group Chief Executive Officer, Airtel Africa Plc, Olusegun Ogunsanya said the company remained focussed on the execution of its growth strategy.

He noted that with its strong operational execution, the company has ensured that it continues to see sustained, positive growth momentum across the business, despite the inflationary and currency headwinds.

“Demand remains resilient, highlighting the vital nature of the voice, data and mobile money services we provide to our customers across the region, and has resulted in a strong 20.2 per cent constant currency revenue growth over the period, with an increase in EBITDA margins.

“This strong operating performance has limited the impact that currency movements have had on the group. In this regard, whilst further currency devaluation, particularly in Nigeria, has weighed on our reported financial performance, it will not affect the execution of our growth plans.

“I am pleased to note that our sustained focus on capital allocation priorities will enable us to fully repay HoldCo debt when due in May 2024, ensuring the continued success of our balance sheet de-risking strategy. This will allow us to continue investing in our strategic priorities to provide affordable and reliable services to customers across our markets, whilst also enabling us to capitalise on new business opportunities, such as our new data centre business, Nxtra by Airtel, which we launched in December.

“In light of our consistent strong operating performance and given current leverage, the Board intends to launch a share buy-back programme of up to $100m, starting early March 2024 over a 12-month period. We continue to be well positioned to deliver on the attractive growth opportunities our markets offer and despite the challenge of rising diesel prices, ongoing currency devaluation and inflationary pressures across some of our markets, we remain focussed on margin resilience,” Ogunsanya said.

Airtel Africa had on January 2, 2024 announced the retirement of Ogunsanya and the appointment of Sunil Taldar, who joined Airtel Africa in October 2023 as Director – Transformation, as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Following a transition period, Sunil Taldar will be appointed to the board as an Executive Director and assume the role of CEO on July 1, 2024, at which time Ogunsanya will retire from the board and the company.

  • Airtelling it like it is

JUST like Funmi Iyanda revealed in her TV commercial for one of the mobile networks: I too had used my one telephone line for years and years. Recently however, with increasingly poor connection, felt it was time to get a second line and avoid being left incommunicado for increasingly long periods of time. On enquiry from associates, the name Airtel kept coming up. It was then that I recalled having actually used that network before during a trip I had taken to India. It had been a good experience, with the sim registration and line activation done in no time. Added to that I had zero network issues and international call rates were so low that calling was practically a giveaway.

I remembered then that I had made several, very long calls to Nigeria. When the auto-display of balance came up, I discovered I had barely dented my call units. That was how that network beat my old one on that trip, in spite of the fact that it had been roamed for use outside the country.

And so with fond memories, I went over to their local sales office to get my new sim. I duly got a line, got registered and got a modest plan to give them a test – run.

I dialed the phone to make my first call; but before it could even connect, there came this arresting baritone voice on the phone.

“Hello and welcome to Airtel, this is Segun Ogunsanya, MD and CEO of Airtel Networks Limited, it is a pleasure to welcome you”…. Something along those lines.

All too soon, his delicious rapping ended and the person I had initially dialed come on line (annoyingly).

Ok, it’s me, this is my new line I told you I was going to get. Alright, cheers.

After that I did some browsing and I was just getting cool with my line when in came this sms. My heart sank a little: was I now going to be bombarded with unsolicited texts and adverts now?

The sms read worse than I thought.

Dear customer, your line will be barred for incomplete sim registration today. Kindly register your sim at …..

WHAT! This can’t be true. And where is Mr Purry – Voice in all this now? Oh Great! I realized he had somehow “forgotten” to leave his number or even a help – line. Everyone I asked said there was but one viable solution- to see them and have it all redone.

Periodically, that awful sms kept coming in, creating waves of panic and distress that I definitely didn’t want. Not long after, the line itself went dead.

As soon as I had time the following day, I went back over to the Airtel Office and repeated the registration process. Curiously, I did exactly the same thing I had done the day before. What might have gone wrong, then?

No one there could give a satisfactory answer. And more disquieting was the fact that I had even gone to their designated office to carry out this registration, rather than they come over; just to avoid anything going wrong. But on this second trip, it was awful for me to discover that I could recognize some faces that I had seen the day before who had also done their registration then – and they were in the same dilemma as I was.

This was not looking good at all! In any case, I, like others registered; calls went through and we were all sent on our merry ways. Or so I thought.

A ‘welcome to Airtel’ sms came in later that day. I was almost going to ignore it, having read the first line; but to avoid any “in case-ity” as we say, I scrolled through the message.

“Welcome… please make a call now or dial… to buy data to avoid service suspension as directed by NCC”.

Now what?! I just MADE a couple of calls. I just BOUGHT data. Service had already been suspended then restored. So – first my line was barred, then I had to do the back-and-forth of registering and re-registering; and now I was being harassed just for patronizing the network.

I guess you can guess the rest.

You are right, my line was barred AGAIN. By this time of course, Baritone – Voice had completely disappeared from the air waves.

It was not a very delighted me who presented herself at Airtel for another round of photograph taking, finger printing and some more of same. Could anyone there tell me exactly WHAT was the issue, so we could tackle that issue and not keep going round in circles? May I see the Manager here? Please check EVERYTHING. Make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Sorry Ma, no Ma, it won’t happen again – this was all rehearsed speech.

By the THIRD TIME I registered, my nightmare had come full circle. Okay, so this time the line grudgingly came to life. Grudgingly because the call rates were now so high I had to wonder. When the auto-display came on, it was nearly N20 for 31 seconds (I got some screenshots). I did a quick mental calculation, multiplying that by a couple of million subscribers everyday – and it was a cool loot.

I keep wondering was this actually the same Airtel as the one I had, my own self, used in India?

When I come to them, does Airtel reckon: here comes another sucker? Because I don’t think so, no

I am not hiding that I am aggrieved.

    So, are YOU being served?!
