  • Aiyedatiwa, the man from the backwaters at 61: focusing on Legacy

Aiyedatiwa, the man from the backwaters at 61: focusing on Legacy

    • By Idowu Ajanaku

Call him a jinx-breaker of some sort, a history-maker or better still, a trail blazer  and you might not be far from the truth. In fact, his intriguing yet, inspiring life trajectory resonates with that of great leaders, who as John Harold Johnson, the creative mind behind the popular Ebony Magazine referred to as those who have taught the world that “ the greater the obstacles we overcome in life, the greater the glory we achieve”.  But who really is the subject of this tribute? That is the million- naira question

Good enough, the answer is right here before us as he is none other than Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa (born 12 January 1965), the first Ondo citizen from the backwaters of the coastal Ilaje community to mount the prestigious pedestal as the executive governor of the acclaimed Sunshine State. An astute  businessman and people- oriented politician, who as fate would have it has served as governor of Ondo state since 2023. Before then he was the deputy governor of Ondo State from 2021 to 2023 under Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (of blessed memory ). But what has defined his sterling leadership capacity are the outstanding capabilities to bridge the gap between the people’s most pressing needs and government’s popular policies. Interestingly, these are amplified  by the achievements especially in the critical areas of security, infrastructural development,  agriculture, education,  healthcare delivery, youth development, job creation, transportation and tourism.

His is therefore, a true testament of a leadership with character, commitment, consistency and of course, the courage to dare whatever odds he finds along the way. And to do so, he has taken those challenges as hurdles to rise above; scale over and keep moving along the crooked paths that have  eventually taken him to the governorship glory, that he is reckoned with as at this day. That rhymes with the thoughts  of the iconic Chinese martial arts sports gem, Bruce Lee who explained the wisdom in turning one’s challenges as stepping stones to greater heights. As Roger Crawford rightly noted: “Being challenged in life is inevitable, but being defeated is optional”. Aiyedatiwa made the right choice.

So good that this has been amply reflected with regards to his praiseworthy achievements, ever since his Inauguration on February 24, 2025 he has kept to the tenets of the 1999 constitution that the primary purpose of government include the guarantee of security and provision of welfare to the citizenry ( Section 14 (2) (b) ). His administration has therefore,  strengthened securiity by completing the second phase of utility vehicle distribution to security agencies which has increased mobility and rapid response of the security operatives, Amotekun inclusive.  Also, additional funds were released to support security operations across the state, ensuring greater safety for residents and their businesses processes.

With resoluteness of purpose combined with resilience, creativity and being futuristic  in vision and action he and  his able team  have turned Ondo state into a construction site, indeed an industrial hub of the country, Nigeria. On infrastructural development for which he keeps receiving accolades, his administration’s resolve to revive and complete several abandoned projects left behind by previous governments is praiseworthy. So is the construction of the 7km road at Gbangbabalogun axis at Akure stands out. There is also the reconstruction and rehabilitation of over 60 kilometers of roads across various parts of the state . Apart from their even distribution, this salutary effort is making transportation easier for the citizens while improving access to economic and social opportunities. All these are worthy of commendation.

So is the rehabilitation and reconstruction of selected roads, totaling 60 kilometers, reducing travel time and improving connectivity. The administration has flagged off the dualisation of the Akure–Idanre Road, a critical route that supports commerce and tourism.

When it comes to  educational development, the employment of over 2,000 teachers in both primary and secondary schools in addition to the construction and renovation of schools have cumulatively boosted quality education delivery. This would eventually reduce unemployment by providing jobs for several youths. Furthermore, to ease the financial burden on families, the government paid ₦633 million to cover the WAEC fees of 23,000 secondary school students. This noble initiative ensures that no child is left behind due to economic challenges. On the improvement of learning resource, the state introduced a 1:1 textbook-to-learner policy, ensuring that every pupil has access to core learning materials. In addition, books, tablets, and sports equipment were distributed to elementary schools to promote holistic education. The expected spin-off effects point to a brighter future.

In fact, one remarkable policy implementation is his prudent financial management of state funds. Apart from ensuring that all political appointees declare their assets to curb corruption Ondo State recorded an 82.6% reduction in its domestic debt profile, the highest percentage in the country. This reflects fiscal discipline and effective debt management strategies. And has gone a long way in stabilizing the financial system and restoring confidence in the state’s economy.

In a similar vein, in the health sector, the governor’s intervention in upgrading 102 health centres has largely improved access to primary healthcare delivery. In addition, a modern drug warehouse was commissioned in Akure, designed to improve the availability and distribution of essential drugs to health facilities across the state. The ongoing rehabilitation of 50 primary healthcare facilities is underway across different communities, strengthening the grassroots health system and improving access to essential care

Pointing the way to agriculture, over the years Ondo state has stood out with vibrant vision for food security, availability, and rural development. As the major cocoa producer in Nigeria, there is growing focus on chocolate processing, with several initiatives aimed at boosting local value addition. The state government and private investors have been developing cocoa processing facilities, including the Johnvents Cocoa Processing Factory, to increase the amount of cocoa processed locally. Also, on Agriculture and Youth Empowerment, investors were engaged in the agriculture and agribusiness sectors, while 100 youths received training in modern farming techniques, boosting food security and employment opportunities. That is in addition to acquiring 10,000 hectares of land to position agriculture as a key driver of economic growth of the state.

On the indusrrial landscape the state is actively pursuing the development of a deep-sea port at Araromi Seaside, also known as the Ondo Sea Port. This project is considered a key part of the state’s economic development strategy, with plans including a 75-kilometer stretch of unbroken Atlantic coastline and an adjacent Free Trade Zone. The deep-sea port is envisioned to be located two kilometers offshore. The governor has also emphasized the need for synergy among security agencies to protect border communities, which is likely related to the port development and its potential impact on the region.

One unique attribute of this administration is that of empowering women to ensure gender parity and equity  In the light of this, grants were distributed to 1,000 low-income women to support small-scale businesses and income-generating activities. This has significantly assisted to  reduce poverty and promote financial independence.

In all of these, the governors’ landmark achievements keep receiving well deserved commendations from within and outside the state because they are people- focused; they enjoy equitable distribution across Ondo state and have positively impacted on their Human Development Index ( HDI ). And as a grateful personality who spends quality time actively  engaged in praising God every last Friday of the month there can only be more glorious years ahead.

    Big congratulations!

He noted the training brought together state coordinators, state senatorial administrators, local government supervisors and ward agents, who are central to the successful implementation of the exercise.

Oladipo said the governor became the first APC member in the state to revalidate his membership, receive membership slip number 001 at the training, thus underscoring the strategic importance of the exercise for party consolidation, planning and future electoral success.

“Further demonstrating his resolve to mobilise the good people of Ondo State for active participation in the exercise, Governor Aiyedatiwa has, at different fora, continued to appeal to party members, prospective members and traditional rulers across the state to come out en masse, without compulsion, to be part of the historic exercise aimed at strengthening APC.

“In fulfilment of his pledge during the capacity training to provide all required equipment, tools and logistics, tablet devices were distributed at the commencement of the exercise to state senatorial administrators and local government supervisors to enhance real-time monitoring and coordination.

“In addition, all 203 ward agents and their local government supervisors were provided with portable energy storage devices to mitigate the challenges posed by unstable power supply.”

He added: “All officials engaged for this critical assignment have also received data subscriptions to guarantee uninterrupted internet access, while physical registration forms were distributed across all wards to aid easy collation of biodata of prospective registrants in the state’s 3,933 polling units, thereby ensuring seamless and efficient data capturing.

“To further ease operations, a specified amount of money was made available to all supervisors and ward agents to facilitate mobility within their wards and local government areas, both for effective registration of prospective members and proper monitoring of the exercise.

“These timely interventions and strategic support from the governor have boosted the effectiveness of the exercise, with Ondo State ranked second next to Lagos in the South West Zone in the ongoing APC membership e-registration.

“To ensure smooth operations, the governor provided officials with tablet devices for real-time monitoring, portable energy storage devices to address unstable power supply, data subscriptions for uninterrupted internet access, and physical registration forms for easy collation of biodata in the state’s 3,933 polling units,” he said.

Oladipo noted that ‘’these timely interventions and strategic support have significantly boosted the exercise, placing Ondo State second in the South West Zone, only behind Lagos, in the ongoing APC membership e-registration.’’

He commended Aiyedatiwa for prioritising competence through the appointment of Kolawole Babatunde as state coordinator, and for providing necessary materials to ensure a successful exercise.

“I also commend the state coordinator for assembling a highly competent and committed team of state senatorial administrators, local government supervisors and ward agents, whose collective efforts have made this laudable achievement possible.

“The APC membership e-registration is currently ongoing across all wards in Ondo State. Existing party members are required to revalidate their membership, while prospective members are encouraged to visit designated registration centres in their wards for enrolment.

“Existing and new members are required to present their National Identification Number (NIN) and Voter’s Identification Number (VIN) to the e-registration officials during the process. The exercise is scheduled to end on January 30,” he added.

Represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, the governor said the state government would continue to support investments that add value to local resources and create jobs for residents.

The assessment was carried out across three states from each of the six geopolitical zones, with Lagos, Ogun, and Ondo states sampled in the Southwest.

Unveiling the report in Abuja, the Institute noted that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has, within a challenging national economic climate, recorded commendable progress in infrastructure renewal, fiscal discipline, justice administration, human capital development, and social inclusion. The report credited the Governor’s calm but decisive leadership style, strategic planning, and insistence on performance as key drivers of the results recorded across ministries.

According to the assessment, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, emerged as the overall best-performing member of the executive council.

The Institute described his stewardship of the justice sector as exemplary, citing his firm defence of the rule of law, proactive legal reforms, institutional discipline, and uncommon accessibility to both the public and professional stakeholders. His performance, the report stated, reflects intellectual depth, administrative efficiency, and an unwavering commitment to justice as a foundation for good governance.

His performance was noted for technical competence, project execution, and alignment with the Governor’s infrastructural vision.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Abosede Osamaye, was sixth, with the report applauding her passionate advocacy for women, children, and vulnerable groups, as well as her consistent grassroots engagement and social intervention initiatives.

Other commissioners were rated fairly across their respective portfolios, with performance scores reflecting varying degrees of achievement, responsiveness, accessibility, and public engagement.

The Institute explained that, unlike perception-based polls, the assessment was conducted using measurable indicators including achievement, appearance, responsiveness, understanding of responsibility, accessibility, comportment, time management, communication ability, cordiality with staff, and cordiality with the public. Each commissioner was graded on a scale of 1 to 100 across these parameters.

The assessment was conducted through a structured, evidence-based evaluation process carried out over several months. The exercise involved independent field observations, structured interviews, media performance reviews, stakeholder feedback, and desk analysis of policy outputs and service delivery records across ministries. To ensure balance and objectivity, the assessment drew inputs from civil servants, professionals, community leaders, media practitioners, and policy analysts, while also comparing performance benchmarks across three states selected from each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This comparative approach allowed Ondo State’s cabinet performance to be measured against peer administrations operating under similar national economic conditions.

Speaking on the report, the Director of the Institute, Dr. George Olayiwola Aladesuru, described Governor Aiyedatiwa’s cabinet as “a carefully assembled team of professionals whose collective output underscores the Governor’s eye for capacity, character, and competence.” He added that the overall performance “speaks to leadership that values results over noise and service over spectacle.”

The Institute further commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for building a cabinet that reflects balance, experience, and dedication to public service, noting that the administration’s progress is a testament to purposeful leadership and teamwork. It urged cabinet members to see the assessment as both an affirmation of effort and a roadmap for deeper engagement, improved accessibility, and even greater service to the people of Ondo State as the year draws to a close.

stitute for Governance and Leadership Accountability (IGLA) has released its comprehensive 2025 end-of-year assessment of the Ondo State Government under the leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

It described the administration as focused, purposeful, and steadily redefining governance through competence, accountability, and people-centred service delivery.

Beyond his primary assignment at the Justice Ministry, Dr. Ajulo’s contributions include chairing several committees and agencies within the government, including Anti-Human Trafficking, Anti-Land-Grabbing, and serving as Special Adviser to the government on World Bank and related matters.

Beyond his primary assignment at the Justice Ministry, Dr. Ajulo’s contributions include chairing several critical statutory bodies and committees within the government, notably the Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, the Anti-Land-Grabbing Task Force, and the Office of the Public Defender. He also serves as the State Security Adviser on World Bank supported projects and related matters.

Ranking second was the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Olaolu Akindolire, whose strategic coordination of the state’s planning architecture and budgeting process was praised as central to the administration’s stability and fiscal coherence.

The Institute noted that his work has provided the economic compass guiding government priorities, aligning policy objectives with realistic revenue frameworks and development outcomes.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, placed third in the overall rankings. The report highlighted his steady leadership in strengthening healthcare delivery, improving responsiveness within the health system, and prioritising the welfare of citizens through improved medical infrastructure and service coordination across the state.

In fourth position was the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, whose tenure was described as reform-driven and forward-looking. The Institute commended his focus on improving learning environments, restoring confidence in public education, and laying a sustainable foundation for human capital development through policy clarity and sectoral engagement.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ayorinde Olawoye, en engineer, ranked fifth, earning recognition for visible progress in road construction, urban renewal, and infrastructure maintenance across the state.

  • NAB urges Aiyedatiwa to intervene in Ondo state disability agency leadership crisis

NAB urges Aiyedatiwa to intervene in Ondo state disability agency leadership crisis

The Nigerian Association of the Blind (NAB), Ondo State chapter, has called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to take urgent action over what it described as worsening leadership and administrative challenges at the State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities.

In a letter to the governor, a copy of which was obtained by The Nation, NAB said the state’s disability community was facing unrest due to alleged poor leadership and unresolved internal conflicts within the agency.

The association recalled a meeting with Governor Aiyedatiwa on September 3, during which assurances were reportedly given that concerns raised by persons with disabilities would be addressed.

However, NAB lamented that the same individual accused of mismanaging the agency remains in charge, a situation it said continues to fuel dissatisfaction and unrest among the disability community.

“Surprisingly, she is still the one manning the leadership of the Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities in Ondo State, causing unrest among us, which we are not happy with,” the letter stated.

The association also raised concerns over the handling of funds released for the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, alleging that part of the N9 million approved by the state government was mismanaged.

“Recently, sir, you released N9 million for the Disability Day, but surprisingly, this same person and her cronies decided to siphon the money released by you,” the group alleged.

It, however, commended the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, for reportedly intervening to ensure the funds were applied for their intended purpose, including the empowerment of at least 120 persons with disabilities.

Despite this intervention, the association said some beneficiaries were yet to receive their payments, a situation it noted had further heightened tension within the disability community.

The group also alleged that an incident at the agency nearly claimed the life of one of its members, describing the development as deeply troubling.

“This did not make us happy at all. Are we going to continue to be silent till death? No, Mr Governor, save us from this ungodly woman who wants to rule us,” the letter read.

According to the association, activities at the agency have virtually stalled due to leadership disputes, resulting in disunity among disability clusters and weakening their collective voice.

It warned that the situation had made persons with disabilities appear marginalised and inferior in the eyes of both the government and the wider society.

As part of its demands, the association called for the immediate dissolution of the agency’s board before the end of the year, stating, “As we are writing to you, the agency is in shambles, unplanned, and lacks direction.”

The group also appealed to the governor to approve its nominee, Adenibuyan Monday, as chairman of the agency’s board, stressing that the request was based on the principles of “rule of law, justice, integrity, and equal representation” within the disability community.
