He described the process as a testament to democratic engagement, transparency and diligence between the Executive and the Legislative arms of government.

Otti hailed the House of Assembly for its thorough scrutiny of the Appropriation Bill, noting that the time taken to review it was an indication of seriousness and commitment to the interests of Abians.

“I’m very glad that this House pays attention to details, not just a House that would pass a bill without asking questions.

“I’m not unaware of the engagements going back and forth between the Executive team and the Legislative team.

“And that is what democracy should be about. Questions should be asked and numbers should be scrutinized. Two good heads, they say, are better than one.

“That this Bill took a little bit of time to pass is also a plus. It shows that some work was being done. And it also puts the executive on his toes to ensure that he continues to up their game, to produce numbers that can be valued for,” he said.

“This is a disciplined government and it will stick to the budget that has been approved. If there is any reason for anything to change, we will still come back to you with a legitimate defence.”

Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa described the 2026 budget as a “Project of Acceleration and New Possibilities”.

“We submitted draft appropriation of N757 billion but in their wisdom after various reviews, the budget size very slightly increased to N766 billion for the 2026 fiscal year. So, we now get to work.

“Our administration has in the last three budget years laid solid foundation for the sustainable development of our dear state. We completed many abandoned projects and launched new ones. We paid billions of naira in pension and salary debt. We targeted workers welfare and approved and implemented payments of promotions arrears and paid many allowances which the previous government neglected.”

The governor said his team had resolved to consolidate his administration’s achievements across the sectors.

He said: “The year 2026 is a dual year of renewal of mandate and rolling out of a new agenda for the next four years. The consolidation for 2026 is a year of continuation, of further good governance and of continuity for sustainable governance.

“Year 2026 is a loaded era as an election year when by God and people, our mandate will be renewed. But we should not allow governance to suffer. We must multi-task.

In Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Governor Abiodun assented to the N1.668 trillion 2026 budget following its passage by the House of Assembly.

The Clerk/Head of the Legislative Service, Sakiru Adebakin, read the Bill for the third time, while Elemide directed that a clean copy be transmitted to the governor for assent.

Earlier, while Presenting the committee’s report on the bill titled “H.B. No. 028/OG/2025 – Year 2026 Appropriation Bill”, Lamidi said the Assembly made adjustments to the budget proposals of three Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Governor Abiodun had, on December 3, presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the House of Assembly for approval.

The governor said the budget comprises N536.56 billion for capital expenditure and N353.77 billion for recurrent expenditure.

The capital-to-recurrent ratio is considered one of the highest in the state’s recent fiscal history, reflecting the government’s emphasis on infrastructure and development projects.

With the passage of the bill, the assembly is expected to transmit the budget to Gov. Yusuf for assent in line with constitutional provisions.

Also, the assembly also held a valedictory session in honour of its two deceased members, Aminu Sa’ad, who represented Ungogo Constituency, and Sarki Aliyu Daneji, who represented Kano Municipal Constituency.

The lawmakers died in active service on Wednesday, Dec. 24, just hours apart.

During the session, Speaker Falgore described their demise as a grievous loss to the assembly and the state, noting that the late legislators were committed public servants who contributed significantly to lawmaking and community development.

He said their dedication to democratic ideals and the welfare of their constituents would remain indelible.

The Speaker extended condolences to Gov. Yusuf, former Governor, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the families of the deceased lawmakers, and the entire people of Kano State.

According to him, the assembly will continue to honour their memories and uphold the values they stood for. (NAN)

  • Kuole-Oloje Ruling House petitions Aiyedatiwa

    Kuole-Oloje Ruling House petitions Aiyedatiwa

A fresh crisis has erupted in Oke-Igbo Kingdom, following a petition by the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, seeking an executive review of the appointment of the Olu-Oke of Oke-Igbo.

The petition, referenced TTC/OOK/ODSG/25, was written by Tope Temokun Chambers, counsel for the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House, on behalf of Prince  Adewole Abegunde, who was described as the unanimous candidate and rightful successor to the Olu-Oke chieftaincy stool.

In the petition addressed to the governor, a copy obtained by The Nation yesterday, the ruling house challenged the appointment of Akintoye Adeoye of Are Kugbaigbe Ruling House as the Olu-Oke of Oke-Igbo Kingdom.

Governor Aiyedatiwa had, on November 4, 2025, presented the instrument of appointment and staff of office to Oba Adeoye at a ceremony held in Oke-Igbo, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government.

The event took place amid protests by members of the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House, who rejected the nomination and described the government’s decision as “unacceptable.”

The petitioners contended that at the time the staff of office was presented, there existed a valid Chieftaincy Declaration governing succession to the Olu-Oke stool.

According to them, the declaration provides for rotational succession among five ruling houses: Odo-Eleyewo, Are Kugbaigbe, Kuole-Oloje, Aderin Ologbenla and Ajibike Adedimeji.

They noted that an appeal-Appeal No: CA/AK/97/2023, Chief Babajide Lawrence & 10 Ors v. Governor of Ondo State & 5 Ors-was pending before the Court of Appeal as at November 4, 2025, when the State Executive Council approved the appointment of Adeoye.

The appeal, they said, challenged the validity of the appointment of the immediate past Olu-Oke.

According to the petition, the Are Kugbaigbe Ruling House, having already produced a monarch in the current rotation, was ineligible to present another candidate until the next cycle.

The petitioners maintained that it was the turn of the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House, which had unanimously selected Prince Abegunde.

Describing the appointment as unlawful, the petitioners alleged that it had generated unrest within Oke-Igbo Kingdom and caused disquiet among traditional kingmakers.

They therefore urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to set aside the presentation of the staff of office to Adeoye and to direct strict compliance with the ladder system provided under the existing Chieftaincy Declaration and the Chiefs Law of Ondo State, in order to restore the stool to the Kuole-Oloje Ruling House.

The petition also served as a pre-action notice, warning that failure to receive a favourable response within one month would compel the petitioners to seek redress in court.

However, during the presentation of the staff of office, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the event as marking the end of a “long-drawn traditional and legal tussle” that left the Olu-Oke stool vacant for several years.

The governor recalled that the vacancy followed a court judgment which nullified the appointment of the late Oba Babajide Oluwole, declaring that he was not a descendant of the Are Kugbaigbe Ruling House and directing that the next monarch should emerge from that lineage.

According to him, the Chieftaincy Declaration registered in 2019 by the deposed monarch was nullified by the court, thereby restoring the native laws and customs of Oke-Igbo as the valid basis for the selection process.

Aiyedatiwa urged the new monarch to see his ascension as a call to service and an opportunity to promote peace and unity in the kingdom.

“Kabiyesi, you are now a father to all. Forget the acrimony of the past and do not use your position to victimise perceived opponents or rivals. I pray that Oke-Igbo will witness peace, growth and development during your reign,” the governor said.

He also appealed to other contenders and their supporters to accept the new monarch, stressing that “the interest of Oke-Igbo must be placed above personal interests.”

    • …says initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s long-standing vision

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic membership registration exercise as a crucial digital initiative for the party’s growth, credibility, and future planning.

The governor made the remarks on Monday while inaugurating the APC e-registration training exercise in Akure, the state capital.

He noted that it was vital for party members to understand both the significance and challenges of the initiative, adding that the exercise aligns with the long-standing vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, even before he emerged as President.

“This exercise is very important for our party, and not just for the party, but for the leader of our party, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Aiyedatiwa said, urging members to participate diligently and mobilize others through influence and encouragement rather than coercion.

He explained that the exercise promotes equalisation within the party, as all members would be registered under the same framework and timeframe, stressing that he is personally overseeing the process.

Aiyedatiwa emphasised that technology, education, and ICT now drive modern economies and should be leveraged in managing party affairs.

Highlighting the importance of a credible database, the governor noted that accurate data would enable the party to plan effectively and strengthen its internal processes.

The registration exercise is set to close on January 31, 2025, giving party officials around 33–34 days to register as many members as possible.

Trainees, selected from various wards, local governments, and districts, are expected to train others, reflecting the party’s confidence in their capacity.

Aiyedatiwa urged officials to ensure all interested members, including new entrants and those previously registered manually, are captured before the deadline.

National Vice Chairman of the APC, South-West, Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, described the e-registration as critical for strengthening the party’s structure, internal democracy, and credibility ahead of future congresses and primary elections.

Kekemeke said the timing of the exercise reflects the importance the APC attaches to party affairs, explaining that it was designed to achieve multiple objectives.

According to him, the first objective is to ensure the party has verifiable and credible membership data nationwide, while the second is to allow new members to become equal stakeholders in the party.

The third objective, he said, is to build a reliable database for congresses and primary elections, while the fourth is to enable members to become regular and financial members of the party.

He disclosed that the exercise is being personally driven by President Bola Tinubu, with the full support of APC governors, noting that the party is relying on governors to ensure its success in their respective states.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Ondo State Governor on Legislative Matters and Party Affairs, Hon. Babatunde Kolawole, said the APC embarked on the e-registration exercise to build a credible, technology-driven national membership database.

Kolawole explained that the database would eliminate phantom entries, ensure accurate records, and enhance transparency and accountability within the party.

He lauded Governor Aiyedatiwa for taking the lead in ensuring the success of the programme, noting that despite the short notice, the governor mobilised the required resources and approvals to make the training possible.

All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Ilaje Local Government, Raphael Adegboye, lauded the governor, saying the pace of development in the state deserved commendation.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has approved the establishment of a College of Nursing Sciences at Kofawe in Ilaje Local Government Area, one of the state’s coastal communities.

The approval was granted by the State Executive Council, marking a significant boost to healthcare training and educational infrastructure in the riverine axis of the state.

Governor Aiyedatiwa disclosed this at the weekend during his thank-you tour of Ilaje, where he was warmly received by residents.

He said the construction of the college would commence next year at its permanent site, adding that land had already been acquired by the state government for the project.

The governor assured residents that more developmental initiatives were in the pipeline, announcing that the operating licence for the Ondo Deep Sea Port had just been revalidated, describing it as a major economic milestone for the state.

He listed several ongoing and planned projects in Ilaje LGA, describing the coastal council as a uniquely endowed part of Nigeria with vast economic opportunities.

Aiyedatiwa said the deep-sea port was only one of several transformative projects lined up for the area, disclosing that a fertiliser and petrochemical plant was also underway, with the state government having signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the promoters.

He further revealed plans for a 500,000-barrel-per-day modular refinery, expressing optimism that the project would significantly stimulate the local economy.

According to him, the deep-sea port, petrochemical plant, and modular refinery would all be sited along the same axis within the Sunshine Free Trade Zone in Ilaje Kingdom.

The governor also announced that the contract for the development of the Araromi seaside corridor for tourism had been signed, describing the project as part of efforts to unlock the tourism potential of the coastal belt.

“All these projects I have mentioned, aside from other interventions, have been started in Ilaje Local Government,” he said, adding that more contracts would be awarded in the coming year, including the Agerige–Zion Pepe road.

He urged residents to visit various project sites to see ongoing developments, citing road construction along the corridor and the concrete walkways being built in riverine communities.

On federal interventions, Aiyedatiwa spoke on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway being executed under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that construction of the Ondo State section linking the state to Ogun had commenced.

He said work had started from Ebute-Pare towards Ogun State, explaining that the highway would connect Ondo State through Ilaje to Lagos, Nigeria’s largest market.

According to him, the project would reduce travel time from the area to Lagos to about 35 minutes upon completion.

The governor lauded the residents and supporters for their contributions to the success of his administration and urged them to take a greater interest in governance.

He encouraged the people to voice concerns in areas requiring attention, assuring them that the government would listen and intervene where necessary.

Earlier, the APC Chairman in Ilaje Local Government, Hon. Raphael Adegboye, commended the governor, saying the pace of development in the state deserved commendation.

In a move aimed at strengthening media operations and supporting journalists in the discharge of their constitutional duties, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the donation of a brand new bus to the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council.

The governor announced the approval on Saturday night at a Media Stakeholders’ Dinner held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Akure.

The Nation reports that the event brought together journalists, media executives, and top government officials to review media–government relations in the state.

The approval followed a passionate appeal by the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Tosin Ajuwon, who commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for what he described as visible developmental strides across Ondo State under the administration’s OUR EASE Agenda.

Ajuwon said the agenda had translated into tangible, people-oriented projects across key sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and urban renewal, cutting across the state’s three senatorial districts.

According to him, the spread and impact of these projects had strengthened public confidence in the government’s commitment to inclusive governance, while repositioning the state on the path of sustainable socio-economic growth.

He, however, drew the governor’s attention to the transportation challenges faced by correspondents who cover government activities across the state.

“Your Excellency, members of the Correspondents’ Chapel represent national newspapers and often travel long distances under difficult conditions to cover official assignments. An official bus will significantly enhance our efficiency, safety, and prompt reportage,” Ajuwon pleaded.

Responding, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the media as a strategic partner in governance, stressing that responsible journalism is indispensable to democracy, transparency, and accountability.

He noted that the media serves as the bridge between government and the people, adding that without journalists, government policies, programmes, and achievements would not effectively reach the grassroots.

The governor immediately approved the request, directing that a brand new bus be released to the Correspondents’ Chapel.

“I have listened to your request. We have three buses; two have been given out already. The remaining one has my approval. This is our way of supporting the media to do their job better,” Aiyedatiwa declared, to loud applause from journalists.

The governor further assured media practitioners of his administration’s commitment to press freedom, openness, and regular engagement, noting that constructive criticism helps the government to serve the people better.

He urged journalists to continue to uphold professional ethics by ensuring fairness, accuracy, and balance in their reportage.

Reflecting on the early days of his administration, which began in December 2023, Aiyedatiwa acknowledged that misinformation and unverified narratives initially strained relations between the press and government.

He said the appointment of officials to address falsehoods and improve communication culminated in his first formal engagement with media stakeholders in early 2024.

“Freedom of expression is allowed. People can speak their minds, even if they criticise me directly. Ththe government learns and improves,” the governor said.

He cautioned against over-reliance on anonymous sources, noting that such reports could sometimes distort facts, while assuring that his administration prefers learning from reports rather than suppressing dissent.

Aiyedatiwa also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and institutional support for the media, including ongoing efforts to address challenges at the NUJ Press Centre.

He disclosed that plans to convert Owena Press Limited into a corporation were ongoing, adding that he had directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo, SAN, to review the legal implications.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, commended the governor for prioritising action over propaganda, praising the media for focusing on government activities, including the state’s billion-dollar refinery project.

In his welcome address, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, said the relationship between the government and the media had improved significantly in the past year, listing several support initiatives extended to media organisations and journalists.

Speaking for the electronic media, the Group Chief Operating Officer of Crest FM, Adeolu Gboyega, urged the government to resolve outstanding commitments inherited from the previous administration, while commending Adeniyan for improving government–media relations.

The Chairman of the NUJ Ondo State Council, Comrade Leke Adegbite, praised the appointment of seasoned journalists as Commissioner for Information and CPS, while highlighting challenges facing Owena Press staff and the Ministry of Information.

He also noted that the sitting governor is traditionally the Grand Patron of the NUJ, and Governor Aiyedatiwa was accordingly decorated as Grand Patron at the event.

Ondo deep-sea port’ll serve as global trade hub, says Aiyedatiwa

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has said the proposed Ondo Deep Sea Port will serve as a major hub for international trade, benefiting not only Ondo State but Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.

Aiyedatiwa stated this in Abuja after receiving the revalidated operating licence for the port from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola.

The licence, originally approved in 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, was resubmitted for revalidation following errors discovered in the original document.

Recall that earlier this year, Governor Aiyedatiwa attributed the delay in the execution of the project to an error in the name on the operating licence issued by the federal government.

According to him, the licence was wrongly issued in the name of one of the project’s prospective partners instead of Ondo Port Development Limited, the actual licence holder representing the state and its investors.

“There was an error made when the Ondo State Deep Sea Port licence was issued. Ordinarily, it should have been issued in the name of Ondo Port Development Limited, but it was erroneously written in the name of one of the partners.

“Because of that, we had to initiate processes to correct the error, which meant virtually starting all over again due to the procedures involved. The analysis changed over time, and we had to go through the process afresh.

“Because of that, we had to initiate processes to correct the error, which meant virtually starting all over again due to the procedures involved. The analysis changed over time, and we had to go through the process afresh.

“Right now, we are at the stage of correcting that error and opening up opportunities for more investors to partner with us. I can assure you that Ondo State Deep Sea Port Limited has come to stay. It is a port that will benefit not only Ondo State but all Nigerians,” the governor had said.

The proposed port is located in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State and occupies a landmass of 2,771.2 hectares. The site also includes an industrial city with Free Trade Zone status.

Receiving the revalidated licence at a brief ceremony at the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy on Thursday, Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the federal government for fast-tracking the revalidation process.

Addressing journalists after the ceremony, he said the state government was fully prepared to commence the project, describing the port as a gateway to international commerce.

He noted that such a strategic infrastructure could not be restricted to state-level usage, adding that it would support industries, businesses, and the national economy.

The governor explained that the port is designed to serve businesses across Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries, boasting a natural draught of about 18 metres.

According to him, the depth would enable very large vessels – bigger than those currently operating in Lagos ports – to berth easily, thereby eliminating the need for trans-shipment.

Aiyedatiwa, however, added that beyond facilitating cargo movement, the project would stimulate economic activities, attract investors, and boost hospitality services in the state once construction begins.
