Aiyedatiwa’s administration is rudderless, alleges Akeredolu’s wife

Wife of the late Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Betty-Anyanwu Akeredolu, has appraised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration as being rudderless.

Aiyedatiwa served as the deputy to the late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Mrs Akeredolu, who declined comments on Ondo State politics, said it was worth noting that the same commissioner her late husband sacked for financial malfeasance was appointed by Aiyedatiwa.

“You can connect the dots as to why Lucky brought her back. We are watching.”

Speaking in an interview published in Newstar, an online news platform, Mrs Akeredolu said her late husband would have been alive if he had listened to her on managing cancer treatment.

She said prayers would never cure cancer, noting that many cancer patients that got cured after treatment were always silent on their survival journey.

Mrs. Akeredolu said it was her desire to live and raise her young children that compelled her to adapt to lifestyle changes.

According to her, “after my diagnosis, I began to read extensively about cancer, particularly breast cancer, exploring cancer websites, Cochrane publications and more. This research opened my eyes to the experience of others and the various ways people were fighting the disease. In Nigeria, discussions around cancer were often hushed; people would get cancer and die, and when someone was successfully treated, they seldom spoke about it. Everyone was kept in the dark. The country was silent, but when I was diagnosed, I refused to be part of that silence. This inspired me to establish the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) in 1997, just six months after I was discharged from the hospital.

“My academic background made it easier for me to understand cancer biology and behaviour. Therefore, it became practically impossible for me to believe that cancer could be caused by juju or spiritual attacks.

“When people suggested going to church or consulting a spiritualist, I simply ignored them because they were entirely ignorant. You cannot pray away breast cancer or any cancer at all. I may not be familiar with other diseases, but when it comes to cancer, I can confidently say I understand the behaviour of the disease.

“When it comes to religion, I tell people to keep to their lanes while I keep mine. ‘Aketi’ understood me, and we managed our differences, yet we had a happy marriage. He was religious, while I wasn’t. I was wired differently, and I make no apologies for that. What came out of their mountain climbing, “blessed” handkerchiefs, water, olive oil, etc., from the GOs and all the noisy prayers like people possessed by demons? If ‘Aketi’ had listened to me, I wouldn’t be a widow.

‘’With my experience watching Aketi battle prostate cancer, if anything, it confirms that cancer is a medical issue. It’s neither juju nor a spiritual attack. My advice to the public is to pay attention to cancer news to be educated. Don’t say it’s not your portion or that you’re covered by the blood of Jesus or that you are a daughter of Zion. Be encouraged to go for cancer screening for early detection, and if cancer is suspected, go to hospital for presentation and treatment. Don’t waste your time running to any pastor.

“A pastor is not a doctor; he understands nothing about cancer. He can only pray, and prayers don’t cure cancer. Consult a doctor—not just any doctor, but a doctor who specialises in cancer cases.”

On whether she was still interested in her senatorial ambition, she answered, “absolutely”.

Tribunal begins sitting in Ondo over petition against Aiyedatiwa’s victory

Ondo state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said that there was nothing to worry about the petitions filed against his victory in the November 16, 2024 governorship election.

Aiyedatiwa won in all the 18 local government areas of the state to defeat his closet rival, Hon Agboola Ajayi, of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Three political parties, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the PDP have filed petitions at the tribunal to challenge the victory of Aiyedatiwa.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, who spoke after the inaugural sittng of the Ondo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Akure, said he was confident that the people voted overwhelmingly for the right candidate.

Aiyedatiwa said his victory at the election was historic and a true reflection of the people’s will.

The governor said: “The election was free, fair, and credible. The people of Ondo State made history by ensuring that, for the first time, a candidate won in all 18 local government areas. That alone speaks volumes about the trust and confidence they have in my leadership.

““And, you know, learning is continuous. Even though I’m the governor, I still also want to hear what is going on in the judiciary arm of government, particularly in this election petition. Having the legal professionals and the very competent justices on this panel, it’s an exercise for me. I just want to witness it and be part of it. There’s nothing to worry about.”

Meanwhile, over 150 witnesses are expected to testify before the tribunal.

The PDP said it would call 43 witnesses, the Independent National Electoral Commission said it would call 19 witnesses, Aiyedatiwa would call 32 witnesses while the APC and Adelami would call 20 and 35 witnesses respectively.

The petitioners are asking the tribunal to invalidate the election on grounds that the election results did not reflect the wishes of the electorates and that the APC candidates were not qualified for the polls.

However, the respondents asked the tribunal to dismiss the petitions saying the issue of qualifications have been determined at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Speaking at the inaugural sitting, Chairman of the panel, Justice Nelson Ugubu, urged Counsel to parties in the suit to cooperate with the panel.

He assured all parties of fair hearing and appropriate justice based on prevalence of constitution.

Justice Ugubu cautioned Counsel against preempting decisions of the tribunal and not to be in a haste to talk to the press.

He urged them to wait till the final decision of the tribunal.

According to him, “The use of phones or any device in recording and capturing the tribunal’s  proceedings and faces of justices will not be allowed.”

Sitting was adjourned to February 10th, 2025, for further proceedings.

LG polls: Aiyedatiwa votes, calls PDP’s withdrawal cowardly act

Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has described the withdrawal of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), from the ongoing Ondo State Local Government Election, as an act of cowardice.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Leye Igbagbo, Ondo PDP Director of Media and Publicity, announced the withdrawal of the party from the election in a statement on Thursday.

Aiyedatiwa said this on Saturday while speaking with newsmen after casting his vote at polling unit 5, Ugbo Ward 4, in Ilaje Local Government Area.

The governor, who said he was not privy to the reason for PDP’s withdrawal, said the party participated in all the qualification process of the election

“For PDP to to pull out, that is cowardice. They participated in the whole process. ODIEC released the time table for the election on time, I don’t know the reason for that (withdrawal).

“Maybe the fear of losing. Every election has its own logistics and other political parties are participating, so whatever reason that made them withdraw, I am not privy to that,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa also described the election as a step towards enhancing grassroots development.

The governor reiterated the commitment of his administration to the effective running of the local government system in the state in line with the provisions of the law.

Aiyedatiwa commended the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) for the seamless conduct of the poll and thanked the people for participating in the election.

Speaking at a news briefing in Akure, a PDP chairmanship candidate, Oluwatuyi Adekambi, described the withdrawal from the election as a failure of the PDP leadership.
