Don’t join August 1 protest: Aiyedatiwa begs Ondo residents

Ondo state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has appealed to residents of the state not to join the planned August 1 protest.

Governor Aiyedatiwa called on the residents to avoid a protest that would destabilise the state and the country.

The Ondo Governor spoke in Akure where he inaugurated local government and ward canvassers ahead of the November 16th governorship election.

Aiyedatiwa, who called on Nigerians to exercise patience with the administration of President Bola Tinubu, said the economic crisis was a global phenomenon.

He said cocoa farmers would not join in the protest because of the need to produce to meet market demands.

He said: “The issue we are dealing with is an economic issue even though we cannot separate politics. It is not a one-day pronouncement that it has to do with the change.

“All we need to do is not to go out to protest. The protest will yield nothing. It is to engage the system on how to increase production in every aspect. The cost of a ton of cocoa has increased. Cocoa farmers will not go out to protest. They will not do what will disrupt the movement of cocoa. Growers of tomatoes will not protest. Those tomato farmers will not join the protesters.

“We do not need protest in Ondo State. We know the cost of goods is high. It is a global trend. It has nothing to do with Nigeria alone. We need to increase our production so that we earn more money. The world is now a global village. What happens in one part will be felt across the world.

“Those in foreign countries are complaining of high cost of living. The change will not happen overnight. This administration is about a year old. Let us be patient. We inherited lots of issues we are trying to clear out. We do not need to protest here. Let’s allow peace to reign. People are out there to capitalise on the protest. We should not give them room to reign.”
