Aiyedatiwa signs law to increase judges to 35

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has signed a law, which allows the number of judges to be increased from 24 to 35.

With the new law in operation, it will be the first time the number of judges will be increased since the state was created in 1976.

Aiyedatiwa, shortly after signing the amended bill into law, said it was a testament to his administration’s dedication to strengthening the fabric of the society, as well as commitment to justice, equality and the rule of law.

He said enhancing the capacity of the judiciary would empower the citizens, foster a just and equitable society and enhance the administration of justice.

The governor said: “As I sign this bill into law today, we not only expand access to justice, but also fortify the foundation of our democracy. By increasing the number of judges, we are not only reducing the workload of the existing judges, but also enabling the judiciary to tackle backlog of cases.

“We equally ensure timely and faster administration of justice, thereby reducing congestion in our courts. We demonstrate that our state is a beacon of progress, where the rights and dignity of citizens are cherished and protected.”

Chief Judge, Justice Olusola Odusola, said the new law would help reduce the workload of the judges.

Why I will defeat Aiyedatiwa, by Ajayi

Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in the November 16 polls in Ondo State, Hon Agboola Ajayi, on Wednesday, boasted that he would defeat Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa,

Ajayi said he remained a grassroots politician that  understood what is required to revive economy of the Sunshine state.

He stated that he was in the race to win because of  his vision for the state’s economic transformation and inclusive, sustainable growth.

The former Deputy Governor spoke in Akure after he was unveiled by leadership of the Ondo PDP ahead of the party’s campaign tour of the 18 local government areas.

Ajayi said residents have became casualty of bad governance under the ruling APC.

He said most communities communities that used to be economically vibrant were now dead.

His words: “I am embarking on a journey that will transform Ondo State totally. A journey that will give us a state to be proud of. We will not give our people fish but we will teach them how to catch fish.

” I started politics at a very tender age as a ward chairman. I was one of those who went for Abiola’s convention in Jos. So, you should know that I started long ago. From there, I became secretary of the party, I became a councilor, I was also elected as a supporting chairman.

“So, the people of the state know us very well, they are going to choose wisely, I can assure you, they have already chosen me to lead the state in the coming election.

“There is no single tractor provided for farmers in Ondo State, so, how do you expect mechanized farming to thrive in such state? I believe that Ondo State can feed the entire South West states. My government will encourage massive mechanized farming, farmers will be provided with adequate facilities to aide their businesses.”

Zonal Liaison Desk Officer of the party in the Southwest, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, said he did not plant any crop this year because the state government could not provide any tractor.

He said the PDP will hold APC accountable for all the monies that came to the state from when Akeredolu was elected till this moment.

“I am a farmer but I can now say that I was a farmer because I didn’t plant this season. I requested and begged for a tractor which I’m going to be paying N90,000 per hectare but I couldn’t get any till now. That means, there is no aganda for people in the agricultural sector, which means there is no aganda for people in small businesses.

“The criminality in government must be fought. And you see, you look at our faces and ask why are these old men think they can fight? Yes, we may not be able to make 100 meters in 20 seconds but the truth is that our head is as clear  as when we were 18 years old.”

Aiyedatiwa picks Ariyomo to lead electricity regulatory transfer

As the 60 days given to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company to come under the regulatory oversight of Ondo State lapses last weekend, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has set up a high- powered committee to oversee the transition process.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, said the Committee will be headed by an industry expert, Engr. Olatunji Ariyomo.

He is to be supported by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Engr. Johnson Alabi, who will serve as the Vice Chairman.

Other members of the Committee are Mrs. Iyabo Adefemi, a former Regional Head of BEDC and Engr. Olumayowa Ajumobi, the Director of Planning of the Ondo State Power Company (OSPC) while the State Coordinator of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB), Engr. Stephen Bolawole, will serve as the Secretary.

Engr. Gbenga Akeju will represent the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) as a member of the Committee while the Benin Distribution Company has been directed to nominate a representative.

The inauguration ceremony held at the Governor’s Office in Akure on Monday.

The Committee’s inauguration is a significant step aimed at improving electricity supply in Ondo as it will now oversee the transition period of regulatory oversight transfer from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Ondo State Government.

The Committee’s principal mandate is to develop modalities for the improvement of electricity supply within the state, ensure smooth transfer of authority from federal institutions to the state and enhance local governance and control over electricity for the benefit of the people of Ondo State.

The Governor said: “This committee is a vital step towards achieving our goal of a more efficient and locally controlled electricity regulatory market. By taking charge of our regulatory framework, we can better address the unique needs of our state and ensure a more reliable and sustainable power supply for our citizens. Having a substantial part of Ondo State in darkness is simply unacceptable.”

The transition is expected to streamline regulatory processes, enhance accountability, create frameworks for improved sector-specifc knowledge and technical capabilities and ultimately lead to improvements in electricity supply and distribution throughout Ondo State.

The committee will work closely with various stakeholders, including NERC, and the Benin Disco to ensure a smooth and effective handover.

The inauguration of the Electricity Regulatory Transition Committee marks a milestone in Ondo State’s journey towards energy independence and improved public service delivery.

Ondo 2024: Akeredolu’s kinsmen pledge support for Aiyedatiwa

Kinsmen of late former governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo local government have pledged to work in unison to secure maximum votes for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the November polls.

They used all aggrieved members to mend fences and work together for the success of the Aiyedatiwa/Adelami ticket.

The Owo APC leaders pledged stakeholders hosted by Ondo state deputy governor, Dr Olayide Adelami.

Chairman of the APC Council of Elders in Owo, Chief Thompson Akinrinbola, said the APC would repeat its 2020 feat in Owo local government by defeating opposition parties by a wide margin.

The Owo APC chairman, Samuel Balogun, said the performance of Governor Aiyedatiwa would make the campaign easy.

He said: “I am assuring the Deputy Governor that Owo will score massive votes for the APC in the coming governorship election. The reason is not far-fetched. The Governor and his Deputy are good people, and with the cooperation of leaders and members of the party, we will achieve success in the forthcoming election.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa has made the work easy for us with his laudable programmes and people-centered initiatives. With a working governor like Aiyedatiwa, all we need to do is to go out there to remind our people of what he has done and let them know what he plans to do going forward.”

The deputy governor assured that Aiyedatiwa would not let the people down.

“The governor has the experience and intellectual capacity to make life easy for our people. I am confident in his abilities to turn this state around, which he has demonstrated in the last six months in office.

“This is not the time to start experimenting with people who have no good record of public service. We can’t afford to leave a working governor for untested people.

“This meeting will not end here. The next one will be in Ose local government, and we will move to Akoko from there to ensure that the entire Ondo North senatorial district speaks with one voice” the deputy governor submitted.

Leaders at the meeting included Senator Remi Okunrinboye, Chief Olugbenga Ale, Princess Olufunmilayo Brown, Dr Adeyemi Olayemi, Engr Mukaila Musa, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo amongst others.

  • ‘Aiyedatiwa has not abandoned Akeredolu’s agenda’

‘Aiyedatiwa has not abandoned Akeredolu’s agenda’

Prince Boye Ologbese is the Ondo State Commissioner for Regional Integration and Diaspora. In this interview with OSAGIE OTABOR, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain speaks on a wide range of issues bordering on the forthcoming governorship election in the state, particularly the chances of his party in the race.

Given the prevailing economic hardship in Ondo State, what are the chances of your party, the APC, in November’s governorship?

When you look at the economic hardship, it is a global challenge. The Russian-Ukraine War has its global challenge. The war has led to a worldwide food crisis. Ukraine is the largest producer of wealth in the world. It is the major component of producing bread. Those in IDP camps were farmers. That is why the government came up with different palliatives. People were happy with it. We will go to the polls and win an election because we did not make palliative distribution a party affair. It was community-driven. We are fielding a reliable and competent candidate. Ondo will not want to be cut off from the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr President. We want to key in line with the APC at the Federal level. We will not have any problem with the poll. Aiyedatiwa will win across the 18 local government areas.

What will Aiyedatiwa do differently for Ondo residents?

This is the first time the people of Ondo State will have a serious-minded person like Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as their leader. He is an energetic and hardworking governor. We have a blueprint already. It is not that he does not know what to do. This is part of what has helped the state. That is why you have to give it to late Akeredolu. He did not abolish Mimiko’s project. He completed them. We designed a blueprint and are working towards that. Part of the vision gave birth to the industrial hub. We have the Chinese working there. We now want to expand the hub.

The government pursued the license for the seaport. If it is under our watch, the investment that eluded us that led to the Lekki deep seaport would have been sited in Ondo State. Aiyedatiwa wants to diversify the economy as quickly as possible before Artificial Intelligence (AI) renders our crude oil useless. We want to put the state economy in a global context through tourism. It is achievable. Ekiti State is working with us. Ekiti and Osun states should begin to talk about the dry inland ports.

The Aiyedatiwa-led government appears to have abandoned the late Akeredolu’s REDEEMN agenda…

We are still focusing on Akeredolu’s REDEEMN agenda. It has not stopped. One of the cardinal indexes is to make sure the three arms of government are being run successfully. It focused on rural development. We make sure the local governments are working. We created the LCDAs to open the scope of local government development. This administration is working along that line. Part of the blueprint we are looking at is Vision 2020. In the next 20 years, Ondo will be compared to the world’s big economies. The REDEEMN agenda of Akeredolu has never been in shambles. It is part of the legacies we are standing on. It is part of what we used to form the government we are enjoying today. This government is talking about the development of the Ondo Port. We have not deviated from all the programmes we put in place in the health sector. We are still pushing them to a logical conclusion. These are part of the REDEEMN agenda. We are building institutions and a legacy that will stand the state of time.

What were you doing before you were appointed?

In 2009, I was the candidate of the party, the then Action Congress (AC). I lost the election. I have been forthcoming for Ondo State politics. I was a maritime operator. I was the Chief Operation Officer of the Ogbese Marine Agency before joining politics. I was also in the diaspora and later returned to develop our state.

PDP’s Agboola Ajayi appears to be a strong force and a threat to Aiyedatiwa’s election. How do you rate his chances?

The candidate of the PDP was once a disloyal member of our party. He does not have what it takes to govern our state. The APC will emerge victorious in the election. We have carried the traditional institutions along. We carried them along in all the policies of government.  It will be difficult for any party to disgrace us at the polls.

Aiyedatiwa will take us to victory because of his track record. He has passed through the training on the job. He was a former deputy governor and worked tediously under the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. He supported the late Akeredolu in achieving the huge success recorded then. When Akeredolu was ill, he did most of the jobs. Ondo people know they are in safe hands. He will give the people the governance they can be proud of. We provided free buses in Ondo. We can feel the yearnings and pains of the people. We are tackling security. We were able to secure our farmlands.

Does the Southwest still nurture hopes of regional integration?

The Southwest governors have adopted a regional anthem, which we have been reciting for the past six years. It shows they want to come together to have a more working relationship in terms of ideology. The governor of Ekiti State was a former Commissioner for Integration. He will see regional integration as key to the development of the Southwest. That is why it was easy for us to bring Oyo State’s Governor Seyi Makinde on board. Regional integration is beyond party affiliation.

The rail system for the Southwest is important and it will be pursued to a reasonable extent. Part of the shortcomings was funding. With the position of the Southwest governors, I think the DAWN Commission will be well funded. Before the push of the bill, Southwest has been forthcoming in the aspect of regional development. It shows we have to appreciate what the DAWN Commission has been doing under the current leadership. Regional development is very key at this point. It will put us on our toes and give us the leverage to do more. We have a common cultural heritage in the Southwest and that is why regional development is key to fostering development. In most advanced countries, they focus more on regional development to enhance their growth. They focus on the provinces. A province is more of a region. The provinces have their laws to bind them together and see how they can use them to foster economic development. In Nigeria, regional development would douse ethnic politics. It will solve security challenges we are facing and that is why we are comfortable and thank the National Assembly for a well done job.

How far have you gone with the proposed Diaspora Estate?

The ministry has worked tediously on this project. We are looking forward to getting the Diaspora Smart City, also known as the Green Economy initiative, approved at the State Executive Council. We want to build a mini Dubai in Akure. This is the diversification of the economy. We want to go into the tourism business. In the next 20 years when Artificial intelligence will render crude oil useless, we want to look at how to run our economy without going to Abuja. This is part of the vision of our Governor. Governor Aiyedatiwa is keen to diversify the economy as quickly as possible. We want to use our Blue economy to complement our Green economy to develop the state. We want to build a global tourism hub to boost the economy. This will open up our state capital to other state’s capital. It will create a lot of jobs and promote lots of diaspora direct investment initiatives. Nigerians in the diaspora are key to us, especially for a state that wants to change its narrative from a civil service state to a business-driven state. We took time to look at why other investments like Tinapa failed. We felt that the government does not have to be in business rather than creating an enabling environment for businesses to strive. These are the kinds of mechanisms we are trying to do. The Diasporas are coming to put those investments on board but the infrastructural development of the hub is the responsibility of the government. We are going to use that to increase the IGR of the state. We want to use the aspect of the Green economy to tackle climate change. We are going to have an artificial lake in that place and with our deep seaport coming on board. The tourism business will also receive a boost. We believe it is going to come to reality.

How much is the project going to cost?

The whole indices have not been well structured in terms of how much we intend to put in but I can tell you if all infrastructures are put in place, it is going to be a tourism hub in the Southwest. We will attract tourists to neighbouring states. It is a global market on its own. The diaspora felt we were on top of security as a state and a region The Amotekun the entire Southwest is enjoying today was a product of this ministry. Amotekun has helped to tackle security challenges. Security is paramount to pushing investment in the country. For a serious government, security is non-negotiable. We are on top of security challenges. Tourism is our next oil in Ondo.

What was the outcome of the Diaspora Investment Summit?

It was part of the initiative we felt that we needed to market our potential to the world. It has promoted a lot of awareness. A lot of people were not aware of our potential. That has helped to put the state on the world map. Investors are seeing Ondo State as a rich market. By the time our seaport is ready, we know we could do better than Lagos because we have agriculture to drive our state. Apart from the commerce Lagos has, we want to focus more on agriculture. Ondo Port will take care of port congestion in Lagos. They will patronise our port if they find it more profitable.

How has the DAWN Commission helped to achieve your dreams?

Ondo State has benefitted from the DAWN Commission. The formation of the Amotekun Corps would not have been achieved if not for the coordination and activities of the DAWN Commission. In terms of bringing up ideas to foster development, the DAWN Commission has been forthcoming. The state government has keyed into the rail system of the Southwest. This will foster the economic growth of Ondo State. DAWN Commission is like a development partner to the state. We hold them in high esteem. This ministry is part of the DAWN Commission and we make sure all programmes of the commission are actualised in the state. The idea is to make the region a robust economy.

What has happened to the electricity project proposed by the DAWN Commission?

The Federal Government has removed a lot of the bottlenecks holding us back. States can now generate and distribute their electricity. These are part of what the DAWN Commission is focusing on. We are bringing in lots of development partners to the power sector. We want to use it in our Diaspora Smart City. DAWN Commission is working with UNDP to see how the region would be more productive in business. The DAWN Commission is coming up with an ideology for the development of the Southwest. Regional development will bring about competition in the region and it will promote unity in the country. Regional integration will not stop the unity of the country. The Eastern Bloc can come up with its own ideology. There will be a lot of competitive thrive. It will make the government more serious and give us that sense of belonging. Nobody will be concerned about who becomes the president.

What has the commission done to boost agriculture in the Southwest?

DAWN Commission focused on agriculture. They did a programme for all the Ministries of Agriculture across the Southwest to see how we can cultivate crops to balance the international trade looking at the geographical nature and areas of comparative advantage. The formation of the DAWN Commission was based on agriculture. The DAWN Commission is pursuing our common values and strengths. They promote export-driven crops to stabilise our forest. We are doing lots of imports more than exports and the DAWN Commission aimed to reverse that. We are working more on our exports.

The DAWN Commission is more concerned about how we are going to have a better economy for future development. The cost of commodities is high. The reason is that most of the foods we consume are from the North. Insecurity has affected agriculture in the North. It is now telling on the whole nation. Most governors are now promoting those crops being grown in the North so that we do not rely on what is coming from the North to sustain our daily consumption.

If we go into serious cultivation of those crops from the North, it will crash the price completely. There is hunger in the land; farmers should focus not only on cocoa but things like pepper, tomatoes and others. That is what the Southwest governors are standing for. That is the commitment of the Governors in the Southwest. We have been playing a lot of roles. We have been brainstorming on growing crops to sustain the Southwest. We aim to crash the prices of stale food items.

Posterity will not forgive Aiyedatiwa over scrapping of LCDAs, ex-APC spokesman

A former spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Prince Abayomi Adesanya, has said that posterity would not be kind to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa if his administration did not appeal the judgment that scrapped the newly created 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Adesanya accused Aiyedatiwa of giving tacit support for the nullification of the LCDAs.

An Ondo State High Court, sitting in Akure, had last week ruled that the 33 LCDAs, created by late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu were illegal and unlawful.

Adesanya, in a statement issued in Akure, said the nullification of the LCDAs was a minus to Ayedatiwa’s administration.

The former chairman of Okitipupa local government stated that successive administrations since 1999 have tried to bring the government closer to the grassroots through the creation of more Local Council Development Areas, but to no avail and lack of political will.

“Whereas, a young State like Ekiti, created in 1996, not as rich as Ondo, during Governor Kayode Fayemi, created more LCDAs out of the existing 16 Local Government Areas. Similarly, Osun state also created more Local Council Development Areas during Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s tenure.

“After 24 years of failed attempts by previous governments, Akeredolu had the political will, in conjunction with the State House of Assembly, to create 33 LCDAs to bring governance closer to the people.

“Rather than commending him (Akeredolu) and fortifying the LCDAs with relevant laws and amendments, I don’t want to believe Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa surreptitiously allowed the 33 LCDAs to slip off the people of Ondo State, because posterity will not forgive him.

“I, therefore, advise Governor Aiyedatiwa, to appeal the judgment of the State High Court nullifying the creation of the 33 LCDA to bring it back to life and to avoid being accused of destroying all the legacies of his boss, Akeredolu, as various communities have also spent so much to build Secretariats for the new LCDAs.”

Ondo Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Kayode Ajulo, had said the state government would study the judgment and take steps that would benefit residents in the state.

Ondo Guber: APC chief commends Oke, other former aspirants for supporting Aiyedatiwa

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Dare Aliu, has described the increasing number of former governorship aspirants in the party pledging support for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as clear evidence of good performance on the part of the governor.

Aliu, who is the Director on Diaspora Matters for Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot Soldiers Independent Council (LACO-FSIC), noted this in a statement on Saturday.

He particularly commended one of the leading contenders in the last governorship primary election, Chief Olusola Oke, for merging his political structure with that of Aiyedatiwa.

Aliu also applauded other governorship aspirants, including House of Representatives member, Hon. Okujimi Odimayo; Morayo Lebi, Prof. Dayo Faduyile, Dr. Soji Ehinlanwo, Prince Diran Iyantan, Mayowa Akinfolarin, and Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo, who had earlier declared their support for the governor.

In the statement issued from the United States of America,  Aliu said, “Chief Olusola Oke has impressed as a firm believer in good leadership and teamwork, one who sees beyond now and knows through unbiased assessment that Governor Aiyedatiwa has the capacity to perform well.”

He stressed that with Oke, a veteran politician with good track records in the governor’s campaign team, joined by notable politicians who are household names, the coast was clear for an Aiyedatiwa victory.

“Even apart from that, the governor in the last seven months in office,  has demonstrated to everyone that he is out for service delivery through a wide range of breath-taking physical achievements.

“To cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal, he rolled out palliatives such as N35,000 extra wage to public workers; provision of free bus shuttles for government workers and school children, and release of N2 billion as soft loans to artisans, peasant farmers, petty traders, and others in the non-formal sector,” Aliu commended. He added that the governor had also mobilised hitherto disenchanted road contractors back to the site, and had been awarding fresh contracts, to provide basic infrastructure.

Aliu, meanwhile, informed that Aiyedatiwa, in collaboration with Ondo State indigenes and other Nigerians in the Diaspora, had taken far-reaching steps to invite credible foreign investors to the state, to establish industries with the twin aim of boosting the state’s economy and providing jobs for its people.

“In our last conversation, we reckoned that there are abundant mineral resources still to be tapped in the state and that we have fertile lands suitable for large-scale agriculture, and we are in dire need of collaboration of real investors with the government to harness these resources for our common good, and the governor aligned with our thoughts,” Aliu recalled.

Ondo to get new stadium soon, says Aiyedatiwa

Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo said on Saturday that plans were on to construct a brand new stadium in the state to help nurture talents who would represent the state and the country at international competitions.

Aiyedatiwa made this known in his speech at an event to commemorate the 2024 Olympic Day Run held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the event featuring Olympians, sports men and women started from the Government House and terminated at the state sports complex.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Olayide Adelam, said efforts were in top gear to ensure that work commenced at the site of the new stadium to ease the pressure placed on the old stadium.

He promised that the state would continue to support the objectives of the Olympic celebration which among others was to promote national unity and grassroots sports development in the country.

“Efforts are on to award the contract of the new stadium at Araromi in Akure to curb the over stretching of facilities at the Ondo State Sports Complex and to enhance sports development in the state.

“The contract for the upgrading of Akure township stadium has been awarded by the state government to a reputable contractor to make the facilities meet international standards for the use of the sports loving people of Ondo state.

“Other mini stadia in Ondo, Ikare and Ile Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

“Our administration will continue to give necessary priority to sports,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa said his administration was determined to give the state a befitting stadium and that he would prioritise sports and also pay attention to the welfare of athletes.

He described sports as a good avenue for social interaction and integration amongst youths.

“Sports is very dear to our hearts in Ondo and our administration will not relent in its efforts to engage the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a chosen career where we gainfully employ the youth,” he said.

In his welcome address, Mr Saka Ogunleye, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, said the sustainability of the event was a clear indication that sport remained a veritable instrument for the promotion of global peace.

“The extension of the event to Ondo State is a clear indication that sports promote global peace.

“We are committed to prioritise sports and engage the youths in a meaningful way through sporting activities. Sports facilities are upgraded all over the state.

“Our target is to ensure that our athletes are able to compete with their counterparts outside the state and win laurels and go further to thereby represent Nigeria in international competitions.”

The representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr Sylvester Ikuejamoye, in his remarks, noted that sporting activities keep the mind and body strong.

Ikuejamoye also said that healthy living can also be gotten through sports.

Aiyedatiwa warns minor chiefs against wearing crown

Ondo State Governor,  Mr. Lucky Ayedatiwa, has warned minor chiefs in the state including Baales and Olus not to wear crowns.

Aiyedatiwa said any minor chief, Baale and Olu that flouted his directive would be sanctioned.

Aiyedatiwa said the crown must be respected.

The Ondo governor who was represented by his Deputy, Chief Olayide Adelami, at a meeting with the Ondo State Council of Obas, ordered traditional stools in the state without chieftaincy declarations to produce one and register it before the end of September 2024.

He said such registration was a strategy to ensure a seamless transition and put an end to agitations and tussles associated with obaship selection process.
